i bought Nikon D5300 with 18-55mm lens

quite a good beginner camera for me.

Get mirrorless. No point DSLR anymore. Get light-weight camera like Olympus PEN series or Panasonic GF series. At least when you go out to take pictures, you don't feel like you're in a gym.

Then point and shoot compact camera.

Don’t straight go to DSLR.

Buy a cheap used DSLR to get the hang of manually playing with the aperture, shutter speed, ISO etc... Once you're comfortable with the controls and prepare for the next step then you commit and get a good DSLR/Mirrorless.

I've seen too many times people straight buy a new DSLR and in the end use it the exact same way as point and shoot.

Another thing about DSLR is you need to post process most of your photos with software like Lightroom or Aperture. Most people don't realize today's phone do the post processing for you so when they use DSLR and see the color and all like not nice they go back to their phone.
