just bought and installed a 70mai a500s and the video quality is superb both in day and night time.. but one thing i notice there's like few dead pixels / hot pixels on my video recordings when i watch back.

at first i thought maybe my pc screen got problem so i go test on youtube for dead pixels but couldnt see it there.. so then i view back the dashcam videos and can conclude its coming from the dashcam itself.

want to ask is this normal or abnormal? if it is abnormal i would claim warranty for it.. when i try google it, people say it is normal though and nothing much can be done? sweat.gif

at first i only notice 2 dead pixels few inches apart from each other but they are at the bottom of the video where the black dashboard is so that's why i noticed it because it become obvious after viewing multiple dashcam recordings and they all remain at the same spot..

then after i google about it, my ocd kicked in and i spotted two more random dead pixels elsewhere.. but the two really need to try hard and go pixel hunting only can tell la. after spotting these other 2 dead pixels i stopped myself from looking further already or else im gonna be very unahppy..

so yeah back to my question, is this normal and we just have to live with it? or its something abnormal that could be claimed through warranty..?

EDIT: Correction, it is not dead pixels but more like stuck pixels because dead pixels should be black and not lighted up, but this one the pixels are red dot instead.

Like two dots on the top, one one the left and another one left of it? Did you try cleaning the lens itself?
*
yup already cleaned the lens and windshield prior to this..

and yes the top left got 1 that looks like a permanent star in the night sky sweat.gif
but i cant tell the other 1 you mentioned which is nearby.. my monitor a bit dusty. if i clean my monitor and view again properly i sked i encounter even more lol.

and the other one is towards bottom right by the edge of the dashboard. easy to tell as well cause the dash is black and the stuck pixel is red/white-ish.

now my dilemma is, to live with it or to make a fuss and claim warranty..

the thing is it doesnt affect the dashcam video at all i guess. 1) its out of the way and its just 1 tiny pixel/dot 2) the videos are still crystal clear 3) when cropped the 4:3 to 16:9 it will be out of view as well?

also i googled and people say this is normal and happens to dashcams and even to action cameras as well just that they got software to map and adjust these stuck pixels to make them blend in. and in some cases they could even be gone overtime as it is a stuck pixel not a dead pixel, there is a possibility it could just fix itself with use..

who knows maybe your videos also got like this... but idk if yall got so OCD like me and check your own dashcam recordings and scrutinize kao kao or not la laugh.gif

okay i came across this video, didnt embed here cause fb videos now heavily compressed. if watch on fb on pc web browser or fb app can view in 4k/2k..

my god this guy have way more stuck/hot pixels than me.. also makes it much more noticeable because hes driving in basically pitch black... which made me check one of my driving videos in pitch black too and i also cleaned my monitor for this.. and yeah turns out mine also got quite a few more stuck pixels than i initially thought i had..

since this got me curious, so i also viewed a few other dashcam videos that were uploaded in 2k/4k and also driving in dark conditions, and even bluejoey's night review footages for the 70mai a500s.. and turns out you can find stuck pixels on them too.. heck you can even see it in this video of his for the viofo T130, on the left side of the video.
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

and with that i have made up my mind, i guess its normal and wont be bother with claiming for warranty dy.. at least mine are not so noticeable and they are mostly out of sight...
night video quality is still very decent for me and even for the uploader i posted above.. i guess its true when i google about it and what ppl say, its quite common and nothing much we can really do about it.. as long as it doesn't affect its main function which is to record videos clearly for identifying purposes when we need them.. hmm.gif hmm.gif

hope i didn't open a can of worms/discovery for yall laugh.gif laugh.gif
but but... if you guys are curious regarding your own dashcam, you can drive somewhere very dark or pitch black with your dashcam then view the videos later and see if you can find them i guess?

I went to search, and yea that guy also having the same problem with me. The Z40 will always reset the date/time and won't follow real-time unless you connect the phone via DDPAI app. I guess only the GPS version can keep track of real-time.

No point to use the timestamp feature and need to turn it off. If I knew this, I would have bought something else
*
no way to set the time on the dashcam itself without using app?

or can do that but it still resets?

okay to add on to this post, spoke to a photographer friend of mine and he said even DSLR cameras suffer from this especially when cranking up the ISO or taking long exposure shots..

and now i understand why the stuck/hot pixels seems more obvious on 70mai a500s videos compared to other dashcams, its because it got a pretty high ISO i guess. that's also why 70mai a500s night videos are very bright/vibrant compared to other dashcams.. so because of that it is easier to spot those pixels as well..

mystery solved for me, guess it is not defective laugh.gif

Do you guys think 4k recording is a must? I feel it’s a bit overkill. File size for a 4 hour drive must be huge.
*
if its within your budget why not.. but for me i think min should be 2.7k/3k like those a500s or z40..
even 2k doesnt cut it for me, still grainy based on the videos i've seen esp in night time..
but if budget is tight, 2k should be the bare minimum.

This is a weird question

In any case, are the rear camera for 70mai's dashcam interchangeable between models?

For example, I am now using an A400. If I would upgrade the front dashcam to a higher model in the future, can I just reuse the rear dashcam ? Or do I need to replace both?
*
Iirc the a500s and a800s only compatible with rc06 rear cam..

So should be no, both needs replacing.

Any advise of buying 70mai or Z40 (as both of them are similar price)? Been thinking which should better for Sedan car. Any advise, earlier post someone mention Z40 cant even see the front car number plate, is it true?
*
they are not the same price though? z40 is pricier, gps version with rear sets you back almost 600.

unless you comparing non-gps version then yeah could be similar prices.. but then not really apple to apple already la. since with gps you can have real-time speed and location..

some people might find speed not an important feature because they always drive fast, etc.. so it could even backfire having it shown..
i used to have a heavy foot as well, but ever since used dashcam which shows speed, my driving behaviour also change already because i kept in mind if i drive fast the dashcam recording also cant save me and would backfire on me.. because of this i no longer so aggressive on the pedals and in turn my fuel consumption improved as well.. overall behaviour on the road became better and more patient these days..
So overall it was a plus for me, and i find that feature important.

and as for gps location function could be useful if you drive at roads you are not familiar with. like out of town/state and you dont know that area, etc..
Or like example you drive on highway and got lorry tayar or some other shit on the road damaged your car, at least you got a very solid proof with that gps tracking in case you want to make claims..

depends on you i guess?

DDPai Z40 viewing playback is kinda troublesome to navigate.

It used to be at Download, then select the thumbnails.

But the updates has change it to Timeline scrolling from the live viewing instead.

Not so nice to keep side scrolling the timeline to find specific....it's tiring. Lol
*
generally i find ddpai's UI (both dashcam and app) less intuitive compared to 70mai. 70mai app is very clean and minimalist look, straight to the point. Easy to navigate around because everything is just clear.

But 70mai all using battery, I scared it won't last under our hot weather.

any 70mai users here already more than 1 year can share your experience?
*
would love to hear as well. if battery spoil can ownself replace battery, that one still ok. worried if the dashcam unit itself will spoil or get fried due to heat..

i have seen some people say they use 70mai for 3 years no problem, i have seen some people say they use 70mai less than 1 year spoil.. hmm.gif
but overall a lot of variables thrown in as well in both situations, some of those spoil <1 year after some digging find out they used their car usb or android player to power the dashcam all these while which could have contributed to its early demise (always restart/shutdown)..

i can give you my feedback 1 year's time from now tongue.gif

anyway on that note, my 70mai a500s runs extremely hot when in use, even at night time and running for like 30 mins only... the hot is like i cant even touch the dashcam levels of hot.. is this normal for dashcams? and when i take the microsd card out, the microsd card is very hot as well..

now im thinking whether this is normal or it could fry the microsd card in the future.. can the microsd card withstand such heat? rclxub.gif its a lexar 64gb microsd in case you needed more info

i heard even z40 also will be very hot when running. for those using z40 is this the case for you too where your dashcam gets very hot when its running to the point its uncomfortable to hold/touch it?

i've set mine to off at 30 secs.

Thanks for your information. I am comparing 700MAI A800s with GPS version (price diff by <RM200). A800s have ADAS but some review say it cannot use. So I am thinking of Z40. Car no GPS so need to think of having it with GPS.
*
ah you're comparing with a800s, i thought a500s. well one is 4k the other is 3k.. a800s video quality will be much better. as for the ADAS, can use. just that its annoying and you will most likely turn it off so it becomes useless. unless you can stand it whenever you change lane and the dashcam tells you that you changed lane, cause theres no way to mute it.

if gps is a must, and between a800s and z40 gps version (i think both around same price, 550+- for front+rear+64gb, for reference a500s which is 3k and is z40's competitor is around 350+-) i would rather go for the a800s, even though using battery. but thats just me personally.

see your use case, whether you park in the sun often and for long hours, etc.. and whether you are comfortable tinkering with swapping batteries when the time comes for the a800s..

anyway im only familiar with this two brands. maybe others would recommend something else as well..

guys...

what dashcam recommend for front and rear with 4k.
The 4k recording requires to play at monitor or pc support 4k right?
maybe DDPAI or 70mai. Viofo too expensive.
*
i dont think rear need 4k.. most are 1080p. unless you want to do stand alone dashcam. means use front dashcam as rear.. but $$$.

4k recording, 1080p monitor also can view. as for pc also should be fine unless those 10 year+ pc with not great specs then will struggle to load the 4k.

but generally if your pc/laptop is recent can use with any monitor to view recordings... unless you mean you want to actually watch the 4k recording in its full 4k glory? blink.gif

found the culprit btw.. always on WIFI.. after i turned it off, it seems ok already. not that hot anymore.

in fact, im actually surprised its just luke warm after driving for hours. i was expecting it to still be hot but just not like previously where its too extreme the heat until cant even touch it..

but been driving during evening/night time only.. will monitor noon driving and update how it is like..

I just checked my 70mai front back dashcam memory card

Im using 32GB can only last me one day worth of recording

Does it mean if i use 256GB i will get 8 days?

Oh ya, the incident recording will take up ur space as well. If it is not real incident, delete it to free up space

I want to retrieve something that happened early in the morning

One white toyota was driving dangerously

Too bad my memory card already overridden

So im thinking of buying bigger size. Probably 128 or 256GB

The incident folder sometimes not real incident because the sensitivity setting was set to HIGH. U hit a pothole, recording will start. It will accumulate and use up memory.

change the sensitivity setting to lower so u wont get too many incident recording
*
i turned off emergency recording already.. even set at the lowest sensitivity, langgar pothole also can trigger it.. very annoying..

but my microsd is 64gb la, so got way more room before any important footages gets overwritten..

This is defeating the purpose of using a dashcam sweat.gif  sweat.gif  sweat.gif

You need the emergency recording for a reason.

Just set the sensitivity to the lowest should be ok.

If you really want to have more recording then get a bigger microSD card like a 128GB which is about 20+- hours of videos.

But usually, 64GB is more than enough as a dashcam is more for recording emergency incidents not keeping more videos from getting overwritten (loop recording).

I got a 128GB in my U1000 (4K & 2K dashcam), I usually press the emergency recording button if I want to keep a certain interesting video.
*
Already tried lowest, no use still gets triggered time to time..

I dont mind to manually retrive from dashcam after incident.. i mean thats what everyone would do anyway right.. plus with 64gb card it would take about one day of revording before it gets overwritten.. dont tell me you get into accident u dont straight take it out and make police report? And keep >24hrs..? Do that also can kena saman right if >24hrs report..
i guess i confident in myself to not be forgetful bout these stuffs?

so i dont find the emergency record feature a must? And if anything theres still the manual emergency record video button

64GB can store about 10+- hours of videos only for both front and rear which means about 5+- hours each for front and rear cams. Not 1 day of recording for both cams laugh.gif  laugh.gif  laugh.gif

Anyway better to be safe with the emergency recording than sorry later when the video gets overwritten. Good luck laugh.gif  laugh.gif  laugh.gif

I see. So if get 128 should be fine la in this scenario..

I really tried to live with it but i just find it too annoying cause i drive a lot. So it frequently gets triggered..
