Malay film the audience is only limited to local or maximum Indonesia, Chinese have little chance given experience in international distribution.
So we can explore English films.
Also censorship wise.

Good film making isn't difficult, marketing is the main problem as distribution are always the few big guys.

Tell me if we're allowed to make a movie which suggest corruption in the police force, the government and semi-realistic portrayal of the the underworld. Or movie suggesting corrupt political dealings.

At least Indonesia has The Raid and its sequel, which may be fictional and not be the best, but good enough that Hollywood would wanna make their own adaptation. Do we have one of equal? We have the story of the Carrian Group, if anyone bother or dare to make a movie out of it.

If J. K. Rowling is born local, Harry Potter won't see a the light of day because "sihir & tahyul" and religious bodies, NGOs and political parties will make noise. And our authors are busy writing cheap romantic novels. Just go to MPH or any bookstore & look at the best-sellers ranking for local publications.

And obviously James Wan made his mark in the industry abroad, not locally.  Why is that?

But then again, maybe Malaysians indeed are simplistic & shallow as you have suggested. Only sex crossed their mind when people speak of censorship.

Korea did exactly what you mentioned and they are a success story.

Those who work in Malaysian Film Set will know. Its the bloody budget and crew treatment, good movies happen in Malaysia normally are big budget with a sane leader. Unsound leader heading film project with low budget memang giler. Butt lickers in the face kind of job, since film shooting takes months to complete, you will see all kinds of shit in an instant. Usually happens to moeny-not-enough production.

I have not heard of any Malaysian film that broke the 20 million box office barrier, those are only Deadpool or better like Hollywood films.
So, how much is considered big budget in Malaysia?
