Laughing at comment who said no censorship will improve movie quality.
If sex scene is your benchmark to define movie is good thats just reflect how shallow ur mind is.
But then again this is /k, where argument is invalid.. So nvm la

Tell me if we're allowed to make a movie which suggest corruption in the police force, the government and semi-realistic portrayal of the the underworld. Or movie suggesting corrupt political dealings.

At least Indonesia has The Raid and its sequel, which may be fictional and not be the best, but good enough that Hollywood would wanna make their own adaptation. Do we have one of equal? We have the story of the Carrian Group, if anyone bother or dare to make a movie out of it.

As of 2018, Amir Muhammad's movie of Lelaki Komunis Terakhir which was made in 2006 is still being banned. It may not even be a good movie but why? And remember the movie "Dukun" of Mona Fandey murder & trial? Only recently in 2018 the ban was lifted although it was also filmed in 2006. Partly due to the portrayal of a particular assemblyman of a particular political party being involved in black magic.

If J. K. Rowling is born local, Harry Potter won't see a the light of day because "sihir & tahyul" and religious bodies, NGOs and political parties will make noise. And our authors are busy writing cheap romantic novels. Just go to MPH or any bookstore & look at the best-sellers ranking for local publications.

And obviously James Wan made his mark in the industry abroad, not locally. Why is that?

But then again, maybe Malaysians indeed are simplistic & shallow as you have suggested. Only sex crossed their mind when people speak of censorship.

Korea did exactly what you mentioned and they are a success story.

They made a film about the 1987 Uprising and I enjoyed it myself.

An equal for Malaysia might be a film of the 98 Reformasi, but that might hit too close to home for someone, and act as a political propaganda for another.

Maybe a movie about the Mayban Finance, Taman Cheras of 6th March 1995, when the robbers tunneled underneath the bank & did it during Raya break.. But the current guidelines would say its belittling our police force & has no demonstration of moral values where "good triumphs over evil"

Alas, we're not lacking in good stories from various events.

Just sucky guidelines.

Two issues that shouldn't be mixed up. 1 . (restricted) freedom of making movies 2. Commercial viability of said movies.

Commercial viability indeed is an issue. Yes. I acknowledge that the movie industry isn't a charity. Its a business.

But that's the risk in business isn't it? Or just play safe and repeating the same old formula. As how they put it, ships are safe in the harbor, but that's not what they're for.

Good movies don't have to be expensive anyway.12 Angry Men is good. So is The Man from Earth, or The Breakfast Club though none is typical of Malaysian favorite genre or trend, as of now.

Perhaps good screenwriter, visionary director and realistic producer.

A movie about the making of the Wolf of wall street, could become an international hit!

Actually could maybe make a whole series of movies about Jho Low and Rezas misadventures in Hollywwod.

Those who work in Malaysian Film Set will know. Its the bloody budget and crew treatment, good movies happen in Malaysia normally are big budget with a sane leader. Unsound leader heading film project with low budget memang giler. Butt lickers in the face kind of job, since film shooting takes months to complete, you will see all kinds of shit in an instant. Usually happens to moeny-not-enough production.

I have not heard of any Malaysian film that broke the 20 million box office barrier, those are only Deadpool or better like Hollywood films.
So, how much is considered big budget in Malaysia?

Iranian films has been winning awards worldwide even with all the censorship imposed in their country.

Its the story telling that matters and we seriously lack of it.

The quality has been improving by leaps and bounds for the past few years. Yes it's still not up to par, but it has something to do with budget as well.

can we get the greatest malaysian director ever to come back to malaysia and perhaps mentor some up and coming local directors? too bad he only made one movie set in malaysia (i don't want to sleep alone https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Don%27t_Want_to_Sleep_Alone) but it was a good one nonetheless.

Itu box office adik oii...

I’m talking about filming budget oiii...

Drama Series like Marco Polo. Movies like Sean Connery scene in KLCC. Recenlty strike back series.
