I think it's possible to learn how to tread water etc without an instructor. But strokes wise, to swim longer distance, need good technique. Need to get basics right, and best to learn with an instructor so someone can correct you
*
yup.

and it might not be easy to switch to proper stroke once you are used to your own strokes.

I saw one guy swim butterfly really like so wrong... I think he learned himself one.

Swimming is also a good sport for elderly. Very minimal impact on joints.

as we get older, sports like badminton, jogging, cycling would become unsuitable due to joint problem.

I haven't go to public pool yet so cannot imagine the take turn. You meant like after swim, for a period of time, then climb up to queue so that others can have chance to swim? I am sorry if I sound ridiculous

The private pool I am going , only allows 1 person per lane, and 1 hour per session. Entrance fee also increased to compensate for less people.

I see. How about the control of shower/locker area ? If I remember correctly, that is the only place at pool that is considered risky, not the pool water itself which a lot of people thought it should be
*
Not suppose to shower, but I was the only one at the swim pool this morning, so they also don't mind.

too bad swimming pools are closed during MCO, although I disagree with it though.

Hi,

Swiming is kinda too easy unless I use some form of water resistent tool for olympic athletes in water. I'm in my 40's. My parents in their 70's swim almost everyday. Due to MCO, they cannot swim these days. Walking is harsh for my mom's knee problems.
*
it is not easy for me especially butterfly, half lap already breathless and no energy already.

Freestyle and breaststrokes are easy though.

I used to swim more because the university had a free pool. I like the fact that swimming allows me to keep my body in shape. Now, due to quarantine, I can't go to the pool, but I would like to go back to it. Still, I like it better than running.
*
yea, better upper body tone than running. icon_idea.gif

i went to see a doctor specialises in sports injuries before. He told me nothing serious, but i might experience early arthritis since didn't take of it before.

Now i'm taking glucosamine already.
*
maybe you need an MRI scan to find out exactly what went wrong.

a bit too young to suffer from arthritis don't you think?

I could only maximum 1 lap on butterfly. Too tired.

Picked up swimming 5 months ago. Had a personal coach to teach me everything from 0.

Fast forward to present day. I know how to do breastroke and freestyle comfortably. Learning butterfly and backstroke atm.

What I've benefit from swimming? My lower back sore from office work 9 to 5 is gone. My body got toned up. And still in the process of quitting smoking. Never knew i loved swimming that much ever since swimming pool trauma during childhood. My past fear has become my present passion
*
swimming gives very good tone to body , that is definitely a plus.

In some ways it has entry costs

Swim attire
Goggles
Swim cap
Swim coaching
Swimming entrance fee

But only initial stage only as with any other sports

Update on my swim journey.

I am having swim training with local club 2 to 3 times a week. I practice on my own about every other days too.

Now, I can do 50m freestyle sprint. I can swim butterfly and i hate backstroke hahah.

During the process, injured shoulder from butterfly. Lower back sprain.
Recovered and into the pool I go again.

Consistency is key and trust the process.
I am working on my turns, underwater and backstroke now and all well i will improve them in future.
*
congratulations

butterfly very energy intensive, for me 1-2 laps only.... sad.gif
how many laps can you swim butterfly?

freestyle can go 10-12 laps

50m fly and im blowing bubbles hahah. Still building endurance for continuous laps.
I think probably due to overexertion and new to butterfly in the beginning.
Body flexibility problem.

Warm up usually 500m free or 200m free and 200m IM

I dont stretch after swim. I sleep and eat banana. Haha
*
not bad wor.

Me can hardly swim 1 full 25meter of butterfly already tenggelam....
