The irony bit is that, eventhough the video bitrate on Unifi TV is higher than astro sometimes the Astro one looks better. (same HD channel)

What Astro did with it's streaming side of thing is actually quite amazing if you're doing live streaming and video compression. 3.8Mbps target for 50FPS 1080p with picture quality to be at least similar to their broadcast (satellite) 1080i counterpart is nothing to scoff at. Combined with using Amazon's AWS for distribution, it's certainly not cheap.

With their unifi plans now getting higher bandwidth (minimum 100mbps), why won't they allow 50fps to OTT? hmm.gif

Depends on the hardware they already invested in. Most likely it's an off the shelf encoder that it's easily accessible but not really optimised in term of quality (hence their higher bitrate still looks not as good as Astro's). But then again most of the live content provider in the region is using a similar setup. RTM, Vidio, MNC Vision, MeWatch(which brute force the quality by setting the bitrate to 8mbps, but still looks not as good as Astro's 4Mbps) and Thailand's AIS. They likely all invested in the same solution.

Once you've invested in this, you're likely locked in for decades as management would want to use money to invest in other areas of the company instead of upgrading something "that still works". And besides, these are targeted towards mobile users first and foremost, which would mask the quality deficit of these streams.

But unlike Astro which have different qualities for mobile (Astro OTG - max 720p @ 1.5mbps) and Smart TV, these providers are using the same stream for both so people notice the quality drop when it's viewed on a bigger device.

Singapore Mediacorp's mewatch offers 8Mbps streaming? Are you sure? It doesn't look like it. Plus, it's only 25fps for them. Where do you see they offer 8Mbps streaming?

Eh salah. I checked again and now it's 4.3mbps. i swear last year was 8mbps

Too many people trying to activate it at the same time I presume. Try again tomorrow.

Unifi TV needs more TV channels and secures more sporting events' rights. Can't stand the other TV provider hoarding everything major, like EPL, BWF, NBA, AFC, etc. 😒

It's a chicken and egg problem due to Unifi TV being available only if you're subscribed to a Unifi account. They want more channel, they need more subscribers, but they can't get any more unless more people subscribe to a Unifi ISP, and they (Unifi TV) rely on Unifi to offset their pricing to the consumer.

At least with Astro, they have Sooka which does not require one to have an Astro account.

To recap, the Unifi TV app is also open to all Malaysians without a Unifi Home account, but doesn't have the following channels:

LCN Channel brands
288 Celestial Movies
289 CCM
VOD Miao Mi
302 Zee Thirai
303 Sony YAY!
311 Colors Tamil
333 Colors Cineplex
401 HBO
402 HBO Hits
403 HBO Family
405 Cinemax
407 HITS Movies
451 Warner TV
453 AXN
454 HITS
462 K-Plus
VOD Aniplus
472 Animax
511 HGTV
521 Travel Channel
556 Cartoon Network
613 WION
701 Unifi Sports
708-711 beIN Sports 1-4

Unifi is ahead of time with this offer since HyppTV Everywhere. Astro also did something similar with the defunct NJOI Now app and Astro On-The-Go TV Pass for non-Astro subscribers, if you remember.

Odd place to watch anime. I just use Crunchyroll and HIDIVE with U-NEXT as backup. No VPN needed for my network of course.
