i think for me, ultimate pack with oldest silver box:

.. get new channels on STB and on playtv app
.. get free lionsgate play+iQiyi on app - these apps exist on AndroidTV - mibox is using ATV.

right... those streaming apps are ATV apps, can be used smoothly on any ATV device like UPB.

i am already using BBC iplayer and iQiyi (just terminated my own subscription since i get free on sep 24) on my ATV TVs.

and installed Lionsgate Play, standby for sep 24.

the good news is i can use these apps on my 2 TV's since max is 2 anyway.

i applaud Unifi for moving more into ATV; unlike asstro which continues to try to block everything except their own boxes.

There r enuf alternatives these days, no need to be enslaved by anyone unless u choose to be.

Every biz tries to max profits on their own. That's the nature of the beast, esp in a monopolistic position.

As consumers, we try not to be suckers but derive max benefit from whatever we pay for.

only black UPB is on ATV os, can use these streaming apps.

white is generic android, cannot use those apps; silver not even android.

so, to use those streaming apps as a unifi customer, u either change pack/upgrade/pay for UPB or buy separate box using ATV os or use a smart TV that is running on ATV (sony, sharp).

The cheapest ATV box is probably mibox s but do check with users to confirm good with those unifi streaming apps when active.

I have the old silver box, and no, i will not pay rm480 for the upb.

But i have ATV smart tvs, so that's ok for me.

The day the siiver box die, i will just use the apps on the tv.

that's what i wud expect as mibox s is google/netflix certified.

quality... right... we know... silver/white boxes are true STBs using VLAN, better PQ, which is why i refuse to change!

UPB and other ATV devices surely lower PQ but a better TV may give slightly better.

my TVs output is no as good as the silver STB but then again, for casual viewing, i can accept... + more convenient, easier navigation.

whether this or that, i think people will be unhappy to spend rm300 or so on an ATV device just to be able to stream those free apps.

what happens is there will be people coming up with hacked/modified apk versions to run on regular android boxes which most people wud have.

if a user is mainly using ATV apps, ATV device is certainly better.

i do not have any ATV box but the smart ATV TVs are very nice to use, and getting better.

for users doing other things like NAS, LAN, local playback HD audio, BDMV, DV, etc... they will prefer boxes with advanced capabilities.

i agree that they hv messed up big time with so many blardy packages with all kinds of prices until they dunno how to close and consolidate them!

this is one industry where they r allowed to do all kinds of differential pricing for diff product offerings.

really, nothing much we can do unless they offer those "grandfathered" old packages something good enuf to change to - free box, renewed warranty, etc.

they keep telling us to pay to change to UPB but no, i won't!

Can - if yr TV isn't ATV, chromecast will do that for u - u buy/pay la...!

Unifi is pushing us to go ATV, pay/free to use Lionsgate, iQiyi, etc...

Astro will punish u if u use ATV devices becos they dun allow them to work with Astrogo (only certain regular android boxes can work).

I think there is a war going on.. and in any war, civilians become casualties.

perhaps we r revisiting the 80-90s war between VHS and Betamax - one of them will die.

can la... the dongle should work, turn yr tv into ATV.

but since memory is small and features limited, unlikely u can do much else with it except stream ATV apps - that's what it is designed to do.

and price isn't low.



"other android boxes" - they have been around for >10 years... some rm150, some rm3K - they cater to diff customer segments, diff needs.

there is no perfect box that suits everyone.

not for those already paying lower and/or higher speed + unifitv.

no chance la... yrs about same as mine, wun get price reduced for same speed.
SG can la... 1gbps about SGD40-50 pm.

this unpleasant issue has a long history... lots of discussion in the main unifi thread going back 3-4 years.

basically, these lower prices came about from free upgrades for the oldest customers.

add on top little napoleon agents doing things on their own and maybe deliberate mistakes - u get a full spectrum of prices and speed and unifitv packs.

if i remember correctly, the champions are those 800mbps at rm149, 500 at 139 and 300 at 129 + all the usual frills.

joy for some, heartache for others - the ultimate TM unifi experience.

many have tried, i hv tried!

they will tell u u can stop using it but they will not reduce net price.

becos net price contains a discount only valid if u have ultimate in it.

so, u can choose another package, no unifitv but u end up paying more on a net basis.

that's why i say they have "grandfathered" deals like yours and mine.


if u want amazon prime, yes, smart ATV TV will do, u need not buy another device.

i will save rm8.90pm next month since i no longer need to pay for iQiyi... i use on my 2 TVs - this app is very smooth, with subs, etc.

amazon prime... i will see... if price is good, maybe.


honestly, i m not unhappy about paying rm179 for 800 mbps as i do use the high speeds quite a bit. + free calls + unifitv... ok.
