Sd 660, 5000mah, stock android, decent camera with gcam ofcuz, decent price...could just be the best below rm1k class phone so far....been using it for this 2 weeks quite impressed with what asus have done here.....good job asus....

Get this phone and straight away enable the camera2 api and install gcam asap, it make a miles different...its not that hard many video tutorial on youtube... Its simple procedure really....

Hopefully asus polish this phone more with their coming OTA update....

Well with the price tag like that, you know they have to cut corner somewhere...its not a deal breaker for me....youtube and nexflix full hd still run just fine...

Totally agreed. Not a big problem, to be honest. The coverage for 5ghz frequency also small.

My review unit works as usual... Perhaps try to "Clear data" of the stock cam app... Oh well, after side-loaded GCam, we can totally ignore stock cam (but selfie vix still need stock cam due to EIS @ 1080P...)

Hehe, ya, a lot of those hit and run cases laugh.gif

I managed to play with a display unit M2 today but very briefly though as someone else was waiting to fondle it too, haha. For me personally it feels nicer in the hands than the Poco, but the back is a fingerprint magnet nightmare. Definitely need a case.

Well my M1 is just a backup phone now and it's still serving me well, so maybe not. But I might dispose of it before the warranty period ends in the next few months. Let's see laugh.gif

Why ? Put your Poco into an external casing and the built material problem will be gone.

Isn't Poco F1 has almost everything a high-tier devices do that makes it an excellent bait for unsuspecting customers ( collaborators ?) ??

One of the reason becuz this is my 2nd daily driver....i dont need 2 flagship phone in my pocket.... So this m2 is the perfect 2nd phone for me....infact my main sim is in the m2....

And poco....why i sell poco...hmm... actually i becus i think for that money i prefer last year flagship like s8+, v30, oneplus5t nd such....better quality.....dont get me wrong, poco is a great phone...but there were many shortcomings....like widewine L1 support, ghost touch, and that thick plastics body..

I'd also add that the M1's LCD is superior than the Pocophone's, so I'm sure the M2 is better too smile.gif

I dont think u can do that....correct me if im wrong....

About the notch.... although hates by many....im kinda into the notch...let me explain....at 1st im like everybody else hatin the notch so much...then i realize, hey i got extra screen realestate to plan the notification bar....all the coverage time battery icon and such go to the extra space that notch provide....when playing video in youtube...at least on this m2...the video play just below the notch....even if we pinch zoom it, it still below the notch....not lik the iphone where the notch cut abit into the video....so if implemented properly, i think the notch is okay....u just need to get used to it...

Since gcam work wonderfully with this phone....i wonder is there any side effect enabling the camera2 api, say maybe drain the battery abit more or hogging more resource like ram.....i wonder why dont they just enable it out of thr box...

The pocophone come pre enable camera2api out of the box...

Yah mee too mantion it earlier....try to clear cache and data like bro azhar said....it kinda work for me, but still the native app is kinda buggy and slow....just enable camera2 api and install gcam pixel2 port that should solve all the camera problem....the quality improvement on gcam is pretty noticable, alot better than native apps..

Will do. But I can only give my general observation of before and after update. Because I dont have any screenshot of power usage before update. Since using this phone, i stopped micro managing my battery/power usage.

The most important observation is overnight stand-by drain... If say after 8 hours deep sleep consumed less than 7%, this is considered normal... If less than 3%, that's phenomenal...

So, get a screenshot before bedtime & another screenshot after wake up...

I'm using GCam_Pixel3Mod_1.3_build.6.1.021 for M1P... The same also works well for M2P...

Attached Image

But, when taking Night Sight, ensure to turn on the camera sound so that we can wait the capturing and stitching process entirely completed before review the pix... Usually it'll take roughly 7 seconds to complete from the moment we tap the snap icon... if we don't wait long enough, then, no pix will be saved in the gallery...

3% of 5,000 mAh = 150 mAh

150 mAh for 8 hours deep sleep

Hence, per hour drain
= 3% / 8%
= 0.375% / hr
= phenomenal

Thanks for the update.... Share with us again if you feel any difference in daily use...thanks in advance bro...

Btw i found out hdr+ "enhance" mode on gcam pixel3....it took slightly long to process, but the picture it produce is even better....

Go to gcam setting > turn on the hdr+ control> the hdr+ button gonna appears on the viewfinder> just turn on the hdr+ "enhance"....give it a try...

I'm sure some corners will be cut somewhere but the pricing really is attractive as it is. But like you said let's wait and see the local pricing when it gets here.

Nah rubbish i own both redmi note5 ai and m2....5000mah is still geng... expect its gonna got better with pie update later on....somore the m2 got the downclock ver of 660, so it should be sipping less than the full flegde gun blazing 2.2ghz 660s...and if i wanted the performance, i should get the poco not note 7...

Unless xiaomi eh, redmi fit a 5000mah min on their note series....im stayin...

If the spec & price is similar to M2P, Sammy will be rich in India in a glimpse... Sammy didn't see this strategy yet... Too bad...

I'd like to try a Samsung Android One device or near stock Android like the M1, so if they can come up with that then it's a go for me.

Yup, that's the reason why low specs phones sell well for Samsung before Xiaomi went in and disrupt the market. Xiaomi sold midrange phones at same price as Samsung's low spec so they took the market from Samsung. Other brands follow suit like Realme and Asus. Low price phone sells well in India so Apple who doesn't have low price phone definitely will fail.

The funny thing is, Tim Cook is blaming China for Apple's failure to sell well over in China. Market analysts already know iPhones won't sell if they continue to raise the price. 1k per phone? That is absurd! I love iphones but I will not buy nor support them for selling at such high price. Tim Cook is just greedy. Expensive but value is not there. Used to be market leader because the price is justified by the value of the product. But now, same iphone design since iphone 6 to XR. They are the one catching up with other phone's technology now. Where has all the innovation gone? In the grave with Steve Jobs. cry.gif

Used to own Redmi Note 3. From my observation... Xiaomi drains batter slower by over aggressive management of app. The good thing about that is you can conserve battery, but at the expense of missing notifications. When set MIUI not to manage apps... then battery drain same as other manufacturer.

This M2P is targeting gaming usages... So, if we run a lot of games in the background, these games are still running until Android decided to kill any of them due to insufficient memory to run other activities...

Now, if the game is heavily depending on "time-based" algorithm, 6 GB RAM is viable. "Time-based" here means there is a timer in the game to unlock certain level/features before we can continue. Eg. for Asphalt 9, we need to wait for like one hour to refill the "fuel" before proceeding to drive. It's like the developer asking us to take a break for a while...

So, if the game failed to be kept running in the memory, the timer will be killed & need to be re-launched again. Don't be surprised that some social media apps (eg. FB, Insta) & shopping apps (eg. Lazada, 11street, Shopee) are consuming a lot of RAM to store pix & short vix in the storyboard or shopping list.

More RAM also helps in speeding up app launching. If the RAM is "almost" full, Android will "take a while" to decide which app(s) to be killed first before launching a new one(s). Sometimes "forced-close" scenario may happen during launching an app due to insufficient free-RAM. Lagging in some apps also contributed by lack of RAM. Forced-close & lagging are severely affecting GCam when Night Sight mode is executed (assuming the GCam version is stable built) . Night Sight and HDR+ Enhanced requires a lot of RAM in order to compile and stitch series of pix.

But since M2P is running stock Android, the availability of free-RAM is "high". Those skin deep UI like MIUI, EMUI, ZenUI, ColorOS, FunTouchOS, OxygenOS, FlymeOS, etc are "constantly" consuming RAM in the background and cannot be killed by Android system. Hence, that's why these devices are being shipped with more than 4 GB RAM on average. Some will go up to 12GB RAM nowadays...

But having lots of apps/activities "constantly" running in the RAM will consume energy too. So, having a 5,000 mAh energy supply will ensure longevity for a least from 6:00am to 11:59pm without a sweat...

Afaik , ram is for multitasking and not speeding up launching or even running? Speed up launching shud be more to the type of storage or processor, no?

Yes... SoC & internal storage plays together with RAM... If RAM is almost full, next app/activities cannot be executed until RAM is "available", hence, lagging or delay in launching the apps. So, when RAM is "almost full", the system takes a while to "kill" "unwanted" activities in the RAM before making a space for next activities.

As we are aware, apps/activities /tasks are not running directly from internal storage. They are "circulating" in the RAM. What happen if phones shipped without any RAM?

And if the ram is not enuff....the most annoying thing that can happen is your whatsapp get killed...and you wont recieve any whatsapp msg, until you open the whatsapp again....that happen to me before with my rn3p 2gb......i dont have such problem with 3gb phone ever again.so i guest 3gb is the min standard for now and sufficient enuff for day to day basis....this m2 come with 4...for my usage and most ppl, its more than enuff...

In the meantime, another contender for 5K mAh crown with "3x faster charging tech"...

Yeah, but I'm not entirely convinced Samsung knows how to price their products in the midrange category, haha. I guess we'll know more come January 28th. That said the Galaxy M series may or may not be launched here.

In the meantime, for those who are keen, the Max Pro M2 will be priced at RM818 in conjunction with Lazada's CNY promo starting tomorrow smile.gif

The M2 Pro is now a contender for Mi A2. Both also running on pure Android. Both have it's pros and cons.

M2 Pro bigger battery and cheaper, gorilla glass
Mi A2 running Android One, better design quality

Note about the camera which is better.

Price is also around the same for the 4gb version.

Too bad the M2P does not support QC tech... Maybe someone in XDA can hack the kernel to enable the QC later....

Battery Report

I think I'm a very light phone user. Average day usage:
- phone call less than 10
- WhatsApp less than 1 hour
- Browsing using Chrome less than 1 hour
- Youtube also less than 1 hour

There is a possibility I can go more than 2 and half days between charging.

Latest battery usage --> https://imgur.com/a/yOaRNkc

On another note... I just notice... when do screenshot.. the notch dissappears. Is that normal?

Thanks bro for the forward....

The thing is im abit paranoid when installing apps or messing around with android fastboot and adb just to enable certain routine function, i scare the apps have to live in the background and slowly sipping the battery...i scare to lose my sot to be honest...try me best to make my phone free from unused apps...i just hope one day asus will implement it as a default function like zenmotion or something...?

The way i see it in android pie....we gonna get the pill gesture instead....just like pixel and nokias android one....whats wrong with the pill was its kinda missing the point....with the pill you will still have the bar that eats up screen realestate at the bottom.....why cant google done it like xiaomi, oneplus and huawei...its much simple and work great...

Well, those people who come to this thread will be bias. But I must say a lot of users do not mind a phone that is slightly thicker with bigger battery. Chasing for thinniest is Apple's obsession and android manufacturers should not follow blindly. Give options to users. Asus did a good job listening to users and the 5000mAH battery helped them to sell more phones than if they went with 4000mAH.

I do not like carrying a brick and i do not carry one unless I am on holiday. Personally, I think it looks classless when someone carry a phone with cables plugging into a brick. Especially ladies. Normal phones should last you one day even if you are heavy user. Unless you play games like gila. If the phone doesn't last you a day means that is a really lousy phone or the battery capacity is reduced. Either change the phone or change the battery. Carrying a brick for that problem is just ignorant.

LOL..just my opinion. Nothing personal. devil.gif

If compare m2p to poco...its obvious...poco is a better phone.....its not the same class...but the price difference dont justify poco....its rm450 difference....iam 2 phone guy....this m2p was my 2nd phone....my main phone previously was poco.....and for poco its abit expansive to be a 2nd phone....thats why i choose m2p instead.... i can save abit and invest more on my primary daily driver, at the same time i got extra battery life...

*If you thinking of gettin poco, at that price i suggest you try check out last year flagship like s8+ v30 op5t, its a lot nicer phone compare to poco, try to get a decent condition 2nd hand in garage sale....

Alright so I have the phone with me. When I get it I full charged it to 100% and then I turned it on. Much to my shock that even at high battery percentage it shows that my battery only have 9+ hours battery life when I see this phone supposedly have 2 days worth of battery life. I figured maybe because I haven't updated the software. So I updated the software, and my battery life is still the same. Should I be worried? Did I do something wrong?

Also additional questions:
1) My phone doesn't have the asus default music player. Where can I download it?
2) When I turned on battery saver, the borders turns red. How can I change the color?

The actual energy consumption is after the 3rd charging cycle...the 1st, 2nd & 3rd is for the system to collect data before can estimate the "remaining battery life" in the stats...

1) M2P is running stock Android. The default music player is Google Play Music. But we can install 3rd party apps from the PlayStore. I don't install any music player. Just using the Google Play Music app is good enuff for me.

2) Cannot change the reddish border. This is system-wide settings to alert the user that the Battery Saver option is activated. Need to root & install custom ROM to fulfill ur expectations.

What does that mean exactly? Do I have to run out the battery till 0% and charge it up to 100% three times?

Shame that the asus music player i want is not available to download. It has features that I use all the time which is seperated shuffle and replay function. I can let a song replay until they shuffle when I hit next. I checked on asus' page on playstore and they didn't have it. I'm not gonna download the knock-offs made by other people as they contain ads.

Well that seems a major oversight, the red color is really distracting. Guess I'm not gonna use battery saver then.

No need to draw till 0%... Just use like normal everyday routine... When reaching 20% can start charging to 80% or 100%. But better till 100% for the 1st 3 cycles so that the estimated battery life is captured based on 100% starting point...

Battery Saver is an option especially when the energy balance is around 20%... The Battery Saver will reduce the SoC "processing" power and lots of background activities will be killed to avoid using more energy silently. There's no harm to activate the Battery Saver from 100% energy level as long as we know how to tweak the settings appropriately so that Push Notifications came thru promptly...

darn it...Asus need to come up with M3 soon as Redmi Note 7 is launching with better specs. Asus keep playing catch up games with Xiaomi.

Redmi Note 5 -> Redmi Note 6 -> Redmi Note 7 launch is so fast. Not even 1 year between each iteration.

Got it through online, among other things.
Did browse through online retailers for the SP after finding out no SP provided by Asus. Summore Gorrila 6 not really more scratch resistant than 4 or 5.

The concerns are just the delivery time, and the delivery charge more than the SP itself

Tempered glass should be purchased at least 2 units. One unit extra for backup or in case the 1st one did not applied properly. In Shopee, most sellers offer free shipping if ordered more than RM40. So, get ur family members and friends to order other stuff/TG for their phone(s).

However, if we want way cheaper options with free delivery, Taobao or AliExpress should be the place to go...ETA is beyond 2 weeks though...

Really hate the double triple name
One for normal phone, one for WhatsApp, and a third one of the person has telegram or such
That's when I chose show all contacts,

But if I don't choose all contacts, the names "combined", but the WhatsApp option disappears

Previous phone ,when I add a contact/number, the normal msg, call, WhatsApp n such falls under one entry. Not separated like this.

Merging won't work.merged all. The system just separates them again under different entries for dif apps.

How to make them falls under the same entry again?

In terms of Contact library, I only use Gmail account as the primary or centralized hub/database.

Meaning, EVERY TIME a brand new contact is received / created, I will save it under Gmail account and nothing else.

By doing this as a habit, it is easier to change phone or transfer contacts to another Android/iOS/Windows devices. No matter which device we use, all contacts are sync harmoniously...

Now, if we did not practice this, then, it'll be a PITA to find which contact is NOT saved into Gmail account. It'll be a headache process.

Hopefully someone can suggest an app or more automated way(s) to handle this kind of "bugs".

I'm also using gmail account.
But the annoying thing is not duplicate accouns.

It's like there is 1 entry for number
Then another entry for if that number has WhatsApp
And another if there is telegram etc
Instead of combining everything under one info

Maybe the "stock" android experience.
Because discoverd the contacts app/icon for other brands are some sort of modified, and availability of 3rd party contact apps that highlight the combine function

If the contact list still duplicated, meaning something not right in the Gmail address book.

If we set only Gmail option, we might not see those contacts that are not properly saved in Gmail address book.

There is a "bug" (which still exist till today...) whereby the first time buy a new Android phone, when we try to save the very first new contact, it won't be saved in Gmail account because the default contact manager will save it inside the phone storage. So, ensure to change the option into Gmail when we save the very first contact in a brand new phone. Only subsequent saving afterwards all contacts will be automatically saved into Gmail forever...

Different interface altogether.
Also different than the Xiaomi I used before.

Did some checking and it seems it's a common problem for this "stock" contact app

Edit: it's not duplicated. It's that it has multiple entries for contacts which has different social media account. Instead of showing them under one entry

Example
Ali. It shows his number
Ali. It show his WhatsApp msg options
Ali. It show his telegram
Abu. It shows his number
Abu. It shows WhatsApp etc etc

There is an option which only shows one entry for Abu and Ali. But then the WhatsApp/telegram option will disappear

Update

Restarted the phone.
A lot of problems disappeared

The DND icon at right corner was 24hrs there. Now it's normal again
The contacts, working as intended, combined again

It seems like the M2P is quite a buggy one

It'll overtake stock contact manager and the Truecaller Contact Manager will merge all duplicated contact "automatically". Plus it has other nice features like identifying & blocking scam calls & SMSes.

What's the honest pros and cons of the max pro m2 that you are using now?
Pls don't mention 5000mah battery and no QC because it's been mentioned across the thread already lol

Here my critic's about the m2p...

1. The camera cud be better, dont get me wrong, its not a bad camera per say....infact ita pretty good camera with enabling gcam.....but i feel its a slight downgrade from my previous redmi note 5 with 1.4microns sensor cams...

2. Theres no way getting around the the plastic backcover...it is better than policarbonate, i does looks good, looks flashy, but its still just plastic...it might have its own advantage like its noticebly lighter than even 4000mah redmi note 5...but still its again its plastic...no way getting around it....

3. The fast charger....hmm...yes i understand its takes alot off time almost 3hours for it to fullcharge the massive battery....but its non issue for me personally, because i still believe fast charger kills battery....so its not a deal breaker for me....at least personally...call me wierd but i stil charge my primary phone the oneplus 5t with a normal 2.0a normal charger from the oneplusone era.....i kept the dash shjt brand new in the box...

All the shortcomings above went away when suddenly i remember i have a bloody 5000mah!!! battery at my disposal...hahahaha pooowaaaaaaaaa!!!! Lolol

It's real buggy too
The contacts, they are separated by social medias even though they are the same entry. But combined back after restart.

The DND, once enabled, the icon will be there at top right.
Won't disappear even when u disable DND.
Need a restart for it to go away

well, it's mid-range phones, it's meant to be at a certain price range and in order to achieve that, they had to cut some corners. life of a mid-range phone is to decide which cons you can live with lol!
and plastic cover to me is alright, back then, phones uses plastic covers too, especially when batteries are still removable.

why do u say it's a downgrade for the camera? like what's the downgrade? the picture quality? or the speed?

i have an almost similar perception with you about QC, as in i'm aware that QC will reduce the battery longevity in the long run, but i'd also like to be able to QC when needed. still, not a deal breaker to me.

the screen press/keyboard issue and buggy software is what i've read from the user's comments in gsmarena, this is what i'm worried most. as of now, XDA is still relatively in the early stage of cooking up a stable custom rom (LineageOS) for M2P.

to me, the buggy software is the only fence that stands in between me and swiping my card for a new phone.
sad.gif
almost got myself a M2P yesterday until i read the user's review...
now i'm contemplating between this phone or waiting for redmi n7p

Same scenario for me previously. To wait for the redmi n7p or this one.

Had better experiences with other midranger phones

Well, already on board on this one so hopefully the bugs get sorted out soonest, and it fixes the screen press issues crossing fingers

i'm quite worried about asus's team in fixing this issue tbh lol!
hence i'm rooting on the XDA modders to bring custom roms that fixes the issue

i kinda need a phone now as my redmi note 3 had issue with the audio jack causing it to be in perma earphone mode. and plugging in my earphone only comes out static noises and mic not working. workaround for me is to use bluetooth earphone+mic. can be quite troublesome sweat.gif

Going from MIUI to stock Android is going to be PITA unless we are well versed with sideloading apps and use different 3rd party apps to challenge special MIUI features...

Then u won't be able to wait for r7pro. Should be at least half a year before touching Malaysia soil
Well this one is the "latest" midranger unless you want to consider plenty others in the same range

Put this in your Play Store wishlist :

When the time is right, it will be available for free biggrin.gif

Almost identical to Asus Music Player but better.

The difference between the 2 I think is the GUI .

i'm asking for my friend, his phone cannot force lock to lte only, when the signal is low always go back to 3g. not like his old asus or my redmi note 5. when i force my phone signal to 4g only it will stay even when signal is lost, it will never go to 3g. btw he is using webe iirc, the unlimited one. any workaround to solve it?

Mine was the latest. Problem

Tried experimenting with different OS today.
Apparently it's firmware issue as the screen pressing issue is gone.

But other bugs emerged from different OS lol
Looks like will have to keep experimenting

On Pie now
The screen press is better, not the best

In call volume a bit low. Very low. Then discovered its my ear positioning. Should be a dem hardware issue, or asus or this specific model issue. Positioned right, the sound is loud and good.

Got in Arrow OS, JamesDSP and Gcam
So far so good. Lots better in handling DND features. Not as buggy as the stock oher than a slight notch visual issue. Cam not as good as expected. Maybe better gcam in the future.

If you really do flash other OS. Make sure not to install the full Gapps
Install the micro Gapps

Thw full Gapps makes some app to crash.
The camera for example

We dont use the full range of gapps anyway. And can get them individually later anyway

After all the really buggy pie updates from Xiaomi with their Android one models (eg. Mi A2 brick, Mi A1 missing lte bands, broken bt), its probably a blessing that Asus may get it right even if it takes longer for the update.

Based on previous Zenfone(s) that I've used, their major OS update(s) do have bugs for sure. But, these bugs are not detrimental like the ones in Xiaomi(s).

Summore, M1P & M2P is running "stock pure" Android. Less risk of harmful glitches....

It's a shame that Xiaomi's Mi A1 and A2 which are under Android One program did not deliver positive experience for major OS upgrade. Now we know how Google & Xiaomi working along in the background...

I agree that somehow Android One is not delivering what it promised. I feel like the upgrade is still up to phone vendor to do. Like google is just there to advise or something. That is why it is still so slow and buggy. The way Android One was sold is like Google will maintain the upgrade and gave impressions that it will be less buggy and quicker to upgrade like pixels.

In the end, it is like Android Go also and depends heavily on phone vendor to upgrade. If phone vendor have low priority to upgrade Android One then the phone will be no difference like other phone's firmware. In the end, it might proof to be a blessing our M1P/M2P are pure android maintained by Asus only. So they don't need to answer to Google for their updates and so far it seems the are delivering monthly updates. That is really good and hope they are able to maintain that until Q as they promised.

I’ve ran every single update for my Max Pro M1 in the past 6 or 7 months, except for one update which installed some Russian browser (and some other useless apps), so far so good.

That russian browser is called Yandex and it is actually quite a good browser which I am using now. BTW, you can install chrome's extensions to this Yandex as they are compatible.

I think its Xiaomi's fault for not allocating enough resources to their androidone phones, after seeing how some of the issues with the A1/A2 were handled quite poorly.

The MiA1 is still a good phone if its on Oreo. The Pie update is worse than Dec '17 first Oreo update, alot of serious bugs.

My honest opinion....if you can live with miui...go for rn7pro....the note7 why not wait abit more for pro ver....with the 675newer chip with sony 48mp imx sensor...just wait a lil bit...but if you like me and you wanted a battery champion phone...look no other....m2pro is the answer.....if you dont play game....dont care much about camera, m1 also not a bad choice you can save a few hundred....

Ensure comparing with the Pro version, ie ZB631KL and not ZB633KL...

Even the model number also confusing... By right the Pro variant should be named "higher" than regular / non-Pro variant.

If ur current smartphone is running MIUI, then, definitely RN7Pro is the right choice (provided the price is at par with M2P...)

One will struggle to get used to stock Android routine if he/she is very familiarize to MIUI. It's like driving auto car everyday when suddenly change to manual shift-stick car experience...

But if one is heavy gamers and relies so much on GPS navigation, M2P is the best option. The 5K mAh energy supply can survive one whole day even though we abuse the energy supply to the max even though it started at 80% juice level...

If the RN7 price (Malaysia set) is at par with M2P, I'd go for RN7. At least we can have both worlds.

Since you are aiming at RN7 and not RN7pro. Better wait.
The screen press issue alone is enough to throw the phone on the floor multiple times

Maybe software, but so far no software really 100% fix the issue
Suprisingly the forumers here didnt feel anything on the screen press issue.
Thats the 1st thing i noticed after i powered it up. Then found out its a glitch for this model. Hardware or software undetermined yet although Asus releasing firmware to address the issue

All official OTAs are announced in this forum:

Asus ZenTalk Forum

So far, my 2 years old ZenFone 3 Zoom is still receiving OTA updates. Launched under Nougat and received 2 major upgrades until Pie. All OTAs are reliable without detrimental effects...

You will have to root it to have those functions, or install some apps

Screen press issue is when at times, its not responsive at all.

I've been conducting an extensive research on lower tier mid ranges since last week. My interest shifted from Honor 8X, Huawei Y9 2019 and Redmi Note 6 Pro to M2P, Redmi Note 7 and M20 (watched countless of videos lol). I was VERY tempted to buy M2P today because all the research is making me go crazy as I wished to be over and done with this lol. Here's what I have found out about the M2P:

-In terms of durability, it is there - I have watched drop test video and concluded that the Gorilla Glass 6 is the most durable among other series. To be fair, though, Gorilla Glass 5 (RMN7) ain't too shabby either
-The chassis of the M2P, despite being plastic, is also very durable; I would prefer plastic over glass as glass cracks and plastic bounces off the ground a little when dropped. Wouldn't have minded aluminium sides/bezels though.
-Performance lags a little behind compared to other SD660 phones as it is underclocked but it is not a deal breaker for me.
-I have read that there were a couple of software/optimization issues, but based on M1 users' feedback it seems that they take care of issues through regular updates?
-Camera issues can be straightened out with GCAM
-double sim + microSD cards slot is good
-would have preferred a teardrop notch like in the m20 and RMN7, though
-stock android experience

I would've bought this phone if not for the emergence of the RMN7 and Samsung M20. On the M20 first - it costs Rs.12,990 / RM740.82 for the 4GB/64GB variant. Benchmark tests show that it is well below par when compared to the M2P. However, as shared by someone above, it scored very well on the battery drainage test. It also features Type-C charging and camera reviews were good. Although I would have gone with the M2P (I'm reasonably biased), the emergence of the Samsung Galaxy M series have piqued my interest at that price point. 'What will the M30 offer' is the big question for me now, considering that my budget is below 1K and I'm pretty sure the M30 will be below that price point.

The RMN7 on the other hand is priced at CNY 1199 (~RM 724 ) for the 4GB/64GB variant. Chassis looks good, except that it only has a 2-slot card tray. Type C charging with 4,000mah battery - not too shabby but are they losing out to Samsung in this aspect this year? It has Pie out of the box, though. Oh, and there's also the Pro version of this phone too which we have very little clue on the specs..

The only thing that is stopping me from buying the M2P is its current price at RM819 (Lazada) because.. why should I pay more when I can pay less for newer phones that can offer much more? If you ask me, if Samsung can produce mid-ranges at competitive price points, I think I would spend a little more on a brand that has a better reputation.

I'll guess I'll wait till after March for to see what the RMN7/Pro and the Samsung M series have to offer - March will be the month.

PS. Can anyone tell me how does the MIUI fare? I have heard tales of bloatware accompanied with Chinese ads. Also heard that the Android One experience was not pleasant for many. My sister in law who used a Redmi Note 2 has had issues with battery too during that era.

MIUI is generally good. However, Xiaomi's OTAs are well known for "not reliable" and they "usually" will withdraw the OTA several days later after realizing major issues in their official "so-called stable" OTAs.

But if we are a person who literally knows how to flash custom ROM and don't mind about voiding the warranty, then, MIUI is the one. Or perhaps we don't mind about minor bugs and glitches in every each OTA, then, MIUI is fine.

We can always test drive potential device(s) at nearby store to get a feel and first impression before finalizing.

The only one thing for sure that M2P is better than Redmi series is the quality of the display. Its IPS is more "vibrant".

I have Pocophone F1 and when put it side-by-side with M2P, it's clearly M2P has better display quality.

M20 is a brand new breed by Sammy. It is their 1st attempt to take Xiaomi's cake. So, OTA and future developments are still in the "dreams" rather than reality. Asus is well known for giving prompt and reliable OTAs. But, one big mistake that Asus had done to the M2P is that it was not released under Pie platform. So, most probably, M2P is going to end up until Android Pie and not guaranteed to get "Q"uaker Oats upgrade next year.

Now I'm back to wanting the M2P after reading what you've said lol. But what made you skeptical on the OTAs on the M Series? How were the updates/development on the A series so far? Were they neglected by Samsung?

Oh breaking news btw..

M10/M20 sold out in India, unsurprisingly - https://gadgets.ndtv.com/mobiles/news/samsu...&akamai-rum=off

And xiaomi's response to the threat..

If we are looking at the A-series by Sammy, head over to the A7 2018 thread. It seems that the OTA for Android Security Patch is 2 months behind schedule. But, A7 2018 is a good phone too for its price. But then again, once our budget reaching RM1.1K, Pocophone F1 is awaiting for grab... LOL...

Back to Sammy M20, since the sales in India is a big hit, hence, the future of M-series is bright as Sammy cannot screw up their "fanz" for giving poor OTAs. India is a country where if we screw up for the 1st time, they'll remember forever... LOL... Example, Xiaomi Mi4i with infamous overheating issues. Until now, many Indian fanz are always asking YouTubers on overheating whenever a new model came out. They are totally paranoid about overheating becoz of Mi4i incident...

Unfortunately, M20 is plagued with overheating up to 47 degrees Celcius when gaming for 30 minutes :
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

This is where Sammy is being tested in India whether they care to solve the overheating issue or not...

I dont care much about the m20, bcuz the exynos is not on par even with sd636.....yes it has longer lasting battery, but i choose the m1p anyday....

While the note7 it is a good phone no doubt....if only xiaomi upgrade their battery to 5000mah, its gonna be perfect...if asus and samsung can do it...why not xiaomi.....come on 4000mah is so 2016...

4000mah is fine but when you have 5000mah like m2p.....the 4000mah seems meh....many says m2p is not efficient but the fact of the matter is, i can get 10h sot easyly compare to note5 4000mah, i have to struggle to get near 9h....

Ps: note7 is a great phone no doubt, i just prefer 5000mah, that all

QUOTE(Kato888 @ Feb 5 2019, 10:13 PM)

*
Wait until they comes here and then we will see how it is ? India country had "Make in India" initiative so their market pricing will be different. Should not rely in direct currency conversion only 😃 Also what will come here might be a little different than what we see on the tech news site 🙂

I've never really liked MIUI/display since the day I've tried it at a Mi shop. I know these days the color display options are adjustable, but the initial experience has stuck with me since. This review highlighted an issue with brightness bleed for the redmi note 7 : https://youtu.be/WlHviu7YaNY

I've watched the review for m20 on overheating and 47 degrees Celsius is really bad. Geekyranjit did a more in depth review highlighting other drawbacks ie. No haptic feedbacks for keyboard taps/finger print unlock, an inferior chipset vs SD632 and also the absence of LED notification. On the other hand, the heating issue is hardware related and cannot be solved through an OTA patch right? I guess this is a good opportunity for them to ensure that this same issue does not happen to m30.

On pricing, I have reviewed historical pricing for various foreign sets vs. local and found out that the variance was at most RM30 after conversion.

I think I'll decide on getting the m2p right after CNY.

Charging over 1.0 is already categorised as charging rapidly
When you are just beginning to.charge, like from 5% bat, and it starts from 0.5, it will state charging slowly

Some kind of battery save feature

As you see,
Below 1.0 it will be charging slowly
Below 2.0 its charging
Anything above 2.0 its already considered as rapidly

Edit : its also written as charging rapidly when its over 1.9

Just placed my order for the phone, will receive it tomorrow. Paid RM808 on Lazada. Decided not to wait for Redmi Note 7.

What cover is recommended for the phone? I found this cover + glass combo on Lazada for a fair price : https://s.lazada.com.my/s.Ozoi

Nice. Congrats!

There’s no particular recommended casings for the Max Pro series, just get one that you like and suits your budget, of course!

Samsung Galaxy M series is coming to town

https://www.soyacincau.com/2019/02/10/samsu...malaysia-sirim/

It seems there is no 5Ghz WiFi though, similar to the Max Pro M1 and M2. I wonder if the licensing fee for the 5Ghz WiFi is really that expensive? Xiaomi seems to have no problems providing that across the board for their phones...

Surprisingly the M20 have camera that is worst than M2. I though M2 Pro already have bad camera but the M20 seems to be worst.

Thing is, Samsung has been around for so long and used a lot of Sony IMX sensors. They seems rushed with the M20 and cut a lot of corners. They are too comfortable with their top position because normal people will see Samsung and will just but the brand.

What will the basis for your consideration? Since the two might offer different things

Timing from 0-100% charge might be a small part of the considerations

Great battery life.
Good for gaming (not heavy gaming)
Camera
good loud speaker

Thats all. laugh.gif

right now using huawei p9. Still love this phone. But huawei battery quality like shit. Battery 40% open the camera. Poofff battery dead. This is very common problem for all p9 user in the world. Already change the battery. Can tahan only 3-4 month only. Maybe lemon battery. But i believe huawei battery are shit.

This is the first time in the history for me to change battery. My brother xiaomi mi3 4-5 years the battery still good.

M2 is no good pair with polarized sunglasses. Screen appears black in landscape mode with polarized sunglass. Haven't got the time to look for a working anti-glare/matte screen protector to counter the polarizing yet.

Had encountered screen touch issue < 4 times since one month of usage. This is seen even after updating to WW-15.2016.1812.179 (2019/01/09) firmware. Am on stock transparent case, will try a few weeks barebones to see if issue still persists. Had once encountered screen seemingly stuck (only power and volume up/down button works) and resolution was simply cleaning the screen.

Battery life is definitely great. Still daring enough to use Waze + Bluetooth even with 30% battery left and still not charging it.

Yeap, got it yesterday. The phone looks stunning in reality, the videos and pictures don't do justice. The screen is just so smooth to the touch I almost do not want to get a screen protector lol. Have not ported my old data to the phone yet, and haven't played much with the settings.

So you would not recommend to download and install the latest OTA? I read in previous posts that there were touch screen issues.

If we think the phone is working as expected, we can skip the OTAs. But usually, official OTAs from Asus is reliable and not detrimental...

As for protection, can try Shopee too:
Attached Image

Can get cheaper elsewhere (eg AliExpress, Taobao, etc.). As of now, nothing can beat IMAK's quality and pricing. But to be honest, the Corning Gorilla Glass 6 on the M2P panel has very good oleophobic coatings which makes the touch and gliding our fingers just like on iPhone series... So, using any sort of screen guard will sacrifice the iPhone-like experience... LOL...

Anyone got the Max M2? I need to get a used phone at low price but all the used phone selling at "looking for waterfish" price.

For new phone, seems like this Zenfone Max M2 is a good buy. Or should i get Max Pro M1 instead? Anyone have other suggestions? Prefer something with big screen. Used Mi Max 2 people are selling like RM600..bodoh!

So screen press issues already solves by update the firmware? 100% confirm no screen press issue after that?

I have this patch pending for download and update : 15.2016.1812.179 (466.92MB). I'm still on 1 Oct 2018 security patch

Is there a second patch after this that solves the touch screen issue, or this is the latest patch?

Budget is actually less than RM300. If cannot get a reasonable used phone then will get Max M2.

Aiya, you ordered already never mind la... Out of curiosity, which phone for 280? smile.gif

I was planning to keep mine till the Pie update, try it and then sell it... few more months before the warranty ends. I’ve never been lucky with Asus phones - they tend to die on me after the warranty period is over, hahaha...

Could be placebo effect either

Me, Max Pro M1 - Situation : Flight mode on, screen brightness 4%, a little bit of light usage such as web browsing with more towards YouTube watching (Youtube was on dark theme), Unifi 2.4Ghz with 3 bars signal, wearing earphone » 87% battery left with 2 hrs 59 minutes Screen-On Time.

However I noticed top 25% will drain a bit quicker if I turn off flight mode, still on wifi 2.4ghz and play a couple of light games within short interval and web browsing. But I managed to achieved almost 2 hours (with a light game being played + web browsing ) to 2 hours ++ SOT if I did web browsing only by draining only 10% - 11% battery.

Brightness I always maintain low around 1%-5% as I use my phone indoor.

I know. It's fine for my case because it is only for normal usage. I did try playing PUBG for 1.5 hours and it is not that hot. The thing that I am more concern is the battery. Won't last 1 day with medium usage.

Hahaha...that's what happen to people who are used to 5000mAH battery phones....

Perhaps can enable the "Power Saving Mode" all the time... Or perhaps "Ultra Power Saving Mode" if just to receive call, SMS and manual push notifications....

Oh well, my LeMoto P2 edy 2 years 3 months old and the 5,000 mAh energy supply seems to be like 4,000 mAh now.... Hopefully other hardware can last as long as the battery... >5 years perhaps... LOL...

I believe that M2P's battery has the potential to last quite a while if one takes good care of it (it was underclocked for a good reason):

On the contrary, the Samsung M20's overheating issue will significantly decrease it's overall lifespan, not just battery only.

Not likely, cause if we compare both devices (against the non-pro version of the note 7) they are on par with their individual pros and cons, at least for me. Unless they come out with m3 pro, then perhaps yes.

Can anyone provide the most suitable guide for installing Google Cam on the M2P without rooting the phone? I'm very new to this and it looks like there are many ways to install it.. also many different iterations of the application itself? I'm puzzled.. could only find one for the M1P: https://forum.xda-developers.com/asus-zenfo...a-port-t3813489

And there're recommendations by Wiser.my on both Pixel 2 and 3 GCam: https://wiser.my/cara-pasang-gcam-pada-asus...one-max-pro-m2/

Want to ask everyone, does this Zenfone Max Pro M2 support 4G+ for Malaysia Telco such as Maxis, Digi, Celcom, U Mobile, OneXOX?
I read some forum say it does support 4G+ for India network, but wonder if Malaysia network is supported.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll try it out later.

On another note, this sort of power consumption is normal right? I decided to test the SoT by charging to 100% and using it normally (occasionally using battery saver) after numerous 20-80% charges.

I downloaded this pretty cool app called AccuBattery that computes its results from scientific data. It even tells you actual capacity vs design capacity (5000mah).

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

(I'm guessing the drop is due to heavy gaming in the first week after getting the phone, spanning between 3 to 4 full charges. Gaming really kills the battery :swt: )

Some other cool info:

Ah, okay.

Strangely, after my 100% charge a couple of days ago, I went back to 20-80% charge and my battery has been depleting a whole lot faster than usual. I'm not sure if the 100% charge screwed up the battery or anything like that, or was it the constant back and forth flipping of the battery saver mode (like more than 10x a day)..

(before charging it to 80%)

(from 80 to 21% (59%), close to 46hrs 22mins since last charge, less than 5hrs SoT)

Based on your several screenshots, the energy consumption is wasted on connecting & disconnecting of network signal... You must be in a very remote zones where the telco towers are so far away thus weak signal to 3G/4G network...

M1P and M2P antenna is very good as good as Huawei's counterpart... Unless you have a lemon unit...

You're not wrong when you said weak signals (umobile ftw lol). My connection rocks back and forth between 3g and 4g pretty damn often in the office. But this battery drain is pretty unusual as I've not experienced this until recently. If whatsapp and other IMs are not blocked on my office network i would be using wifi lol.. but anyways thanks for the info - I'll continue to monitor.

What's a lemon unit? And how do you test if the antenna is good? Ookla speedtest?

Ps. Anyone wants to test out AccuBattery? I'm interested in seeing other sets' actual vs. design battery capacity, taking in factors of usage and how long since you got your set

No news yet. Geekyranjit did send an email to Asus asking them about it.

For those of you who wanna get the m2p, would be a good idea to wait for the price drop (hopefully it happens here too):

(10,000rs is about RM700)

The Realme 3 also not bad with the Helio P70 as I've watched the review but damn, the m2p still captures my heart with stock Android and 5k mah.

Any issue with touch screen?

Aside, anyone knows if we need to download and install all preceding OTAs before we can actually install the latest one, or we can just jump straight to the latest ie. https://www.asus.com/Phone/ZenFone-Max-Pro-M2/HelpDesk_BIOS/ ?

Good to know on the touch screen!

Actually I forgot to add that I have not installed any OTAs since I first got my phone. The latest one would've made the 3rd OTA since the phone has emerged? So it's still OK to skip all the previous ones and install this one directly?

Eer idk. Because i just use this phone. laugh.gif just direct update to new one. My OTA just 800MB. If you manual update, file size 1.9GB. I assume it will recover all the update. New and old.

can just skip the previous OTA(s) and install to the latest ROM either manually or OTA itself (if the phone auto-detect it...)

Thanks! I guess it makes sense why the update file on the website is so huge in size (1.9GB).

Anyways, PIE update will be out next month, granted if this is not another one of their empty promises again..

I bought my M2 4/64 at RM773 during the launching promo. Paying for RM999 just to get a 2GB upgrade for RAM is a bit too much if you ask me.

If you get it, don't update it yet. I read that there are a host of issues to deal with.

And they don't have digital wellbeing and adaptive battery. Can't say im not disappointed..

Not sure about the M2, but someone updated his M1 and he had problems so yeah, I'd agree with you - don't update just yet! smile.gif

Sh*t has hit the fan:

https://piunikaweb.com/2019/04/15/asus-zenf...blems-and-bugs/

I'm now VERY wary of future OTA updates. Who knew stock Android would've so many problems under Asus?

I can confirm, though, that I have installed the latest Oreo update and it is stable (after like, how many iterations?). The only thing is the battery icon when charging, which is a small issue.

I'd say it's overpriced vis-a-vis the 4/64 model. But then again, to each his own.✌️

General daily usage (without gaming) of the phone would still leave you with 2gb of free ram. Having 6gb ram is a bit of an overkill IMO

6GB phones can switch between a dozen or more apps, including some heavy duty ones, without seeing a single reload. This is the beginning of the sweet spot. Common apps remain in memory for long periods of time and the multi-tasking experience is seamless, most of the time.

next week onward, there's might be less demand on this phone.

Realme 3 Pro coming out... Snapdragron 710 yo.. battery little smaller at 4045, but still bigger than RN7 tongue.gif

The Indian market is the fodder that gets the brunt of shitty updates first-hand lol. They are careful with other international segments, so it's no surprise that we still have not received the update via OTA yet. We're almost 6 moths into 2019 now.. oh wells..

Hi everyone,

I'm hunting for info on Zenfone and came across this forum thread! Learnt so much from reading all your posts!

I'm thinking of getting the M2P. As I know the Pie update is a mess, so I thought I would update up to just before that. So, according to the Asus website: Asus M2P Firmware

That should be
Version WW-15.2016.1902.192
2019/03/12
right?

So far, there is no announcement yet for M3P ya?

No, none. There's an Asus event next week but it's going to focus on the Zenfone 6. The M1 Pro was announced April 2018, and M2 Pro was announced in December, so we're looking at probably August or so before M3 Pro comes about...

While it's true gorilla 6 is pretty strong (much stronger than 5), get the SP. You wouldn't know when it would take the unexpected fall and on what surface it would fall on. Don't regret later when your screen crack lol.

Some people don't like SP due to degrading the touch and vividness of the screen.

Some people prefer SP as a long term assurance and reduce glare of the screen. Also, higher resale value when it's time to let go, the screen still looks brand new...

So, choose ur path for ur benefits...

I'd say try the device with SP first... Maybe for a month... If don't like it, remove it and use naked (while searching for better SP if possible...)

Meanwhile, Android Q beta is available for Zenfone 5Z liao..

MIUI has some good points but it's not consistent. For some units, the UI freeze often i.e. upon waking, receiving calls (but cannot answer due to jammed).

MIUI has some good points but it's not consistent. For some units, the UI freeze often i.e. upon waking, receiving calls (but cannot answer due to jammed).

Thz guys for the input! Just got my M2 last night. Getting used to it as I'm moving from MIUI.

No schedule turn on/off tho as I discover. To use alarm, I suppose I have to leave the hp on with DND or sth.

I'm using G Photos which is good enough for me. Yeah, plenty apps on Playstore.

When I'm free, will enable the cam api and install the gcam app right?

Guys, how is the battery life so far? I've been using it for 3 months and i feel the batt capacity has fallen a fair bit. Accubattery reads 4500mah now. I usually charge until 80%, occasionally 100% every 2 weeks. I tried recalibrating the battery about 2 weeks ago (bring it down to 0%, charge to 100%, recommended by ASUS, go google it) and i did get close to 10 hrs. But subsequent 100% charges showed that the battery has weaken considerably. Fyi, I only use the ASUS charger most of the time - that's how I take care of my battery.

Ps. I have disabled gestures, auto brightness, and deleted accubattery. I switch off wifi and data when I'm in the office and also during sleep (would also turn on battery saver)

The "Phone Idle" rate at 34% for 2 days usage is considered "strange". Most probably due to telco / network instability and/or rouge background app(s)...

Try to fix network to 3G only and see if any improvements on the phone idle rate...

With your suggestion, i used only 3g mostly - the battery drainage has reduced a fair bit.

Generally 1hr sot takes up about 10% of battery; the drain below started from 80%

I see some users get way better sot than me tho.

Bro, just enjoy using the phone. You bought it because it has 5000mAH battery. Just charge it to full and use it. Stop worrying about battery unless it is draining ridiculously fast. No point micro managing a phone battery. When time is up, you can just change battery at cheap price so why the worry? I think it doesn't make sense to charge at 80% because you will end up charging it more often which is also another big factor that reduces battery life span.

So my advice, just use the phone like it's meant to be used.

Getting close to a 3hr sot reduction is a lot for me; micromanaging is when i go down to the minutes. This is hours we are talking about. I'm not heavy user eg. Gamer, mind you. So it is only natural that i find out the cause of the issue since I only bought this phone in Feb. The solution that bro Azhar pointed out has worked for me, at least for now.

On the charging more part, i don't see it an issue if the battery is working properly esp so when im not a heavy user. Anyways, the point is not charging to 80%; it's the drainage rate. Like I've mentioned, 10% drain equates to 1hr sot on average, for me anyways when the batt is at it's optimum.

Ps. Any idea how much does a replacement batt cost?

Valid point. At 80% to 30% is smaller vs 100% to 30%..
But it's up to individuals. It's their phone. Their $$.. we just give opinions only.

Does anyone have issues uploading videos on instagram? Video uploads on this phone end up being very 'laggy'. The same video file was used to upload on my old Lenovo and it didn't have the same issue.

well from what I read. Pie is more smooth. faster boot-up. Less battery drain BUT dimmer screen... so basically u needed to increased your %.

don't know about FM Radio frequency..

Telco coverage poor? M2P uses Snapdragon chipset / modem. on par with Huawei (someone mention before). so signal should be okay too (compared with MTK chip/modems). maybe yours telco coverage poor in your area brows.gif

Asus probably heard people complaining about the screen too bright which is true for me. My screen brightness is always 10%-20% only. Even at night with lights off when I turn to 0%, it is still too bright. LOL...dimmer screen is a plus for me! LOL....

Gonna update to Pie once the community in XDA release a version with TWRP and Decrypt that won't lose my data.

ps. Sorry my phone is M1 only.

Copy (all) pics, vids and whatsapp 'Backups' , 'Databases' & 'Media' folder to OTG/pc. Reset phone from the setting in case you doesn't remember current gmail password.

As to restore whatsapp chat/settings, you know what to do or simply googling it.
