Like the thread name, which paste/grease would you use or using?

On your cpu and/or your gpu.

and which you think is better?

now and forever tongue.gif, AS5, always with AS5, why? i actually 'ter'-bought one time too many AS5, (not that many though) tongue.gif

IMO, AS5 serves me well, way much better than stock thermal grease/paste...

Less than RM50?Almost all of the thermal paste i know and used before are in the range of RM25 - RM30. Nothing more expensive than that..

Why MX-1?Because i have personally not tested it before and reviews are saying they are pretty good.Wanted a replacement for my AS5 as well..Most of them are ok with GPU but some of them are saying that you must be careful when using AS5. Electro conductive or something like that...

your disappointment is unjustified, it's clear that you're expective like 5 - 10c drop in temperature which is unrealistic.

anyway after using so many paste (CM, AS, capalang) - i've decided to stick with capalang paste. smile.gif

doh.gif must change once a month (for maximum thermal dissipation, and for OC freak) or at least once 6 months if u are lazy.

*capalang RM3 (or less), the white colour one, which looks like toothpaste. is recommended for u. no need buy expensive one, as it not worth at all. even though u are a super oc freak or oc noob.

As far as i know, the AS5 is having the same price tag as of the MX-1 and with the AS5 proven to work very well..

Choices of thermal paste really depends on user preference. To some, 1 - 2c is a big deal so getting a good paste is essential while to others who do not care, even chaplang one will work well..Heck, i have chaplang silver paste with me as well..

True ka? For my previous rig, never changed for 3 years!!!

Is there any references that say you have to change the thermal paste frequently?

Me using AS-5! Looking forward to AS-6 @ MX-2...... rclxms.gif

I actually did get a 10C drop going from cheapass to AS5. But of course i followed the application instructions extremely precisely. Super clean surfaces, and only a tiny little drop of paste. Use too much and performance goes to hell.

why u guys use thermal paste so much?

I've bought the smallest AS-5 and after 4 times applying, i think i still can apply another 10 times.

Note, there is VERY LITTLE thermal paste needed, size of half rice grain...

and I can get 10dC improvement (before burn-in) from stock intel cooler...

im using mx-1 also nice happy.gif, difference is:

AS5 for hardcore ocers which wash HSF and reapply the paste every 3~6 mths
Mx-1 is for daily use and probably means u change it 1 time per year...

difference in performance is 1c only, but if u dun change AS5 every 3~6mths it will start to lose performance...this is from actual result cz my friend is using AS5 too =)

this is what i read about mx-1
"The compound hardens within a period of 200 hours and reaches thereafter its optimum performance" seems like it is the same as AS5 but better than AS5 by 1-2 degrees

can you guarantee that your conroe's surface is 90%+++ in contact with the heatsink?

and you're the first one i come by claiming to have 10c drop in temps. that's nice!! thumbup.gif cos the reviews and feedbacks i get are usually around 2 - 5c drop.

i believe other factors like sink, fan, ambient and airflow also affect how far you get with as5. smile.gif i mean in a casing with bad airflow, stock heatsink and fan. one can't expect as5 to work wonders - a point many overlook. smile.gif

AS5 dries up, from my experience. In fact dries up really badly if u use it for GPUs. That's y i never trust AS5 anymore after that.

difference in performance is 1c only, but if u dun change AS5 every 3~6mths it will start to lose performance...this is from actual result cz my friend is using AS5 too =)
*
I have not had trouble with my AS5 "drying up", curiously. One of my PCs has had it on for over 2 years now, no trouble with temperatures. Interestingly one of my friends had some trouble with it after about the same time (from the very same tube which i used), so i don't know what that was about. I suspect that if the heatsink moves after the paste has dried up, it may cause problems, but the drying itself is not a problem.

QUOTE(goldfries @ Jun 7 2007, 11:07 AM)
and you're the first one i come by claiming to have 10c drop in temps. that's nice!!  thumbup.gif cos the reviews and feedbacks i get are usually around 2 - 5c drop.
*
I was surprised myself. I thought it would be around 5C max. But it actually did drop 10C, and exactly 10C too vs the old crap paste.

I don't think toothpaste is very safe. It may be corrosive to the metals it comes in contact with, so it's not a good idea.

i heard from another forumer about AS5 dries up after few months of usage too, it seems it cannot stand high OC temp and high CFM conditions.......

MX-1 i saw Mypc selling them, got a few stick........

BTW......WAh so nice thermalright......... packed chill factor for their heat sink as well, and the whole syringe is quite a lot, can use more then 10 times i think........ but i wasted abit, apply too much the first time..

No metal particles

Since the MX-1 does not contain any metal particles, there are no problems regarding electrical conductivity and capacitance. In contrast to silver and copper compounds, contact to electrical traces, pins, and leads cannot result in any damage.

Durability

The compound hardens within a period of 200 hours and reaches thereafter its optimum performance. Because of the hardened compound, no evaporation or bleeding is possible. In contrast to metal or silicon pastes, this compound does not show decreasing performance over time, does not need to be reapplied and has a durability of at least 8 years.

You can find 3M thermal tape from uglyvamp. He got quite a number of them..

Anyway, other choice is, you can always use double sided tape. They can work as well but not as good as those thermal tapes.

Well, dont just believe reviews. Try it yourself. Its like those review are always finding something to beat the AS5. Review also did say that the Chill Factor can beat the AS5 hands down but to be honest, i do feel that AS5 is still better...

I think the better term is really subjective. Many people do look at review but obviously, you will really need to try it yourself to know whether its better or not. Better than AS5 wise, many reviews had shown TIM like Chill Factor and MX-1 is better. However, i have tested Chill Factor myself which is less or almost the same performance as compared with the AS5. Therefore, i guess you really need to test out to see whether or not they are better...

From LYN, it seems MX-1 and AS5 is having the same price..But, i have found some MX-1 only selling for roughly about RM20 - 22 which might be cheaper than AS5. I think due to the fact that they are not that much known though..

So far, i have not heard of processor bundling thermal paste in their package.
At most what you get will be a stock heatsink fan with thermal pad on it.

Btw, many aftermarket HSF does come with a small tube of thermal paste included.

my experience is as of what @meno said.

anyway normally processors don't have paste on it, it's their stock heatsink.

and stock heatsinks usually come with a default paste. if they don't, then you have to apply la.

and yes, 3rd party heatsink usually do provide a packet of paste.

I wonder.. that AMD I bough 2 years ago or so do have thermal paste with it... but I never see if the HSF got it too or not.. since I'm noob in self assembling my PC.. so I brought all my stuff to the shop and ask them to assemble it (with cost ofcourse).

Now I'm thinking of learning to assemble it myself (my new C2D rig) and are quite panicked with the issue of assembling motherboard until the installation of HSF and PSU's pin.

One of the issue is ofcourse.. how to apply thermal paste sweat.gif

Thinking of getting ThermalTake Big Typhoon VX but ofcourse.. until the stock has arrived... I will have to use the normal HSF first.

That is why I asked...

Thanks for the answer guys smile.gif

Most of the time you could apply a small amount of thermal paste roughly the size of a grain of rice on the middle of the heatspreader.

But there's a different method for C2D due to placement of the cores. Refer to

Hmm... perhaps mine didn't come with thermal paste too and I have somehow mistaken it with something else?? sweat.gif

Since I let the shop do it.. I didn't know if he do apply the thermal paste or not.

actually how u all clean it before applying thermal greese...?
use normal cloth to wipe it...?
any suggestion...?

You could get thermal paste cleaners like Arctice Cleaner.
Some people use alcohol to clean it.
But some other people like me, use only cloth or tissue to wipe it away. tongue.gif

i use methylated spirit from pharmacist (rm5 for 100ml)...cant find isopropyl alcohol..if u want it easy, just get those alcohol swabs from any pharmacist...its rm 1 or so for 10 pieces and just wipe the TIM off with it =D it is alooot easier then wiping with tissue...cz the TIM will dissolve when alcohol is applied just make sure to wipe with abit of tissue as well la ...cz the alcohol will only loosen the TIM

Cleaner with alcohol as it would disolve the TIM and allow it to get wiped and removed completely. Use an alcohol that evaporates at a high rate so there would not be a residue left behind.

I tried the Zalman before last time and check out the temperature. Not really up to my expectation as i really feel Zalman is good in term of cooling. But, the paste which cost even more than the AS5 (deemed to be better even before release) was nothing much and almost performs like cheapo CM paste...

dont mind my blur webcam...currently my digi cam is with my sis x_x

the left on with orange words and the bottem one with red words are alcohol swabs, just make sure they have at least 70% isopropyl alcohol

the bottle is methylated spirit...its alcohol as well, but u need a high grain ( at least 95%) pure alcohol...or better if u can get isopropyl alcohol ( 90% pure) but its hard to find...dont use nail remover and all that stuff...its bad for ur cpu.

just ask for alcohol swab, normally its all in the same shelf =)

right to the point there.... good sound advice. Or as an alternative, you can also use tape recorder cleaner used to clean the magnetic head, coz that is basically industrial grade alcohol... BUT advice make sure you use gloves for any alcohol you are using due to the fact that its an organic solvent. Wear surgical gloves and make sure u keep the cap closed when not in use, due to the high level of evaporation and volatility(flamability)

Got it?

i dont think so...u will probably scratch the hsf and the heat spreader on the heatsink..i recommend getting sand paper ( at least 1000 grade, and choose the water proof wan as its normally aluminum oxide) and lap ur hsf if u think its nt smooth enoff, lap it in 1 direction only and dont la over lap it lol......and use alcohol to clean up the microdust lol...

and dont polish/wipe ur processor heat spreader wif anything else other then alcohol...=)

well, we are studying chemistry here with the use of organic solvents tongue.gif ... well i think bryan's advice is inch perfect. Try the sand paper first, then basically use any industrial grade alcohol, due to the fact that it evaporates fast and it cleans better. Just practise caution though, like i said in one of the earlier threads.

don't use hand. hand may have some oil and dirt stains.
use a spatula if u really want to spread the paste over your cpu.
or just apply a small dot size no need to spread manually. whaen u apply the heatsink, the pressure will spread the paste.

most thermal compounds needs a period for it to "set in".means you have to wait before achieving optimal temps.correct me if im wrong. smile.gif

yes like ac5 mx1 and nanofusion require around 200 hours of use to fully optimise its heat transfer capability. Ceramique is around 12 hours.

the only prob with ac5 would be the use of 99.7-99.8% of micronised silver. Silver being a metal in nature if not careful can cause electrical conductivity and more worst short circuits due to virtual connections on the board.... also that because it liquifies, it has a problem with detoriation over time. Given by a website i read somewhere, you would only appreciate the intrinsic capabilities of ac5 when you are an overclocker because of the heat transfer capability. Otherwise any other paste would do, like ceramique:)

That's way too much and using too much actually reduces its effectiveness. Depending on whether your CPU is single core, dual core or quad core, the amount of AS5 or MX-1 used and the application , i.e. rice grain size dot in centre, thin horizontal line or thin vertical line will differ depending on the core placement underneath the IHS. You can find more information on the Artic Silver website (link provided below)

Arctic Cooling MX-1 seems better than AS5.
On monday, i bought myself a tube of MX-1 for myself.

Then applied it on the same way i apply AS5 on my CPU IHS.
After 4 days, MX-1 performs at 26 degrees [Yes, i'm on watercooling]

While AS5 performs at 28 degrees.

Wow, this does proves that MX-1 is much much better than AS5. hmm.gif

but between as5 and mx-1 the choice is actually preference of the user, coz both is roughly the same =)

Descriptions:
High Performance Thermal Compound for the Enthusiast
Turbo MX-2 is a high conductive and low resistance compound for components that require the best thermal dissipation. MX-2 is ideally suited for use in CPU, GPU cooling and other applications between power semiconductor components and heat sinks where high thermal conductivity is critical.

Main Features
* High Thermal Conductivity
* Low Thermal Resistance
* Non-Electrical Conductive
* Non-Capacitive
* Non-Curing
* Non-Corrosive
* No Bleeding
* Odorless

No Metal Particles
Since the MX-2 compound does not contain any metal particles, there are no problems regarding electrical conductivity and capacitance. In contrast to silver and copper compounds, contact with electrical traces, pins, and leads cannot result in any damage.

Durability
Curing and bleeding of the compound is not possible. In contrast to metal or silicon pastes, this compound does not show decreasing performance over time, does not need to be reapplied and has a durability of at least 8 years.

USing AS5 and Artic Cooling MX1 now. I found that the MX1 is about giving the same result on my cpu,this is maybe due to my heatsink (Thermatake one).

I'm using MX-1.

Decided to do full heatsink service (after 3 years) - clean off dust, lapped heatsink base, remove old paste and reapply MX-1. Temps now dropped about 11-12C. I think dust removal (very thick) contributed a lot plus also the MX-1.

little difference i'd say. the most difference i get would be 1- 2 deg c with the MX2 being lower (better la). idle temps were almost same.

both were tested on my GC. smile.gif

But some are saying MX-1 is better than AS5. MX-2 is just slightly better than AS5 only? That would be a waste though..

my tests results weren't far off from what's stated at the graph of AC used at their site and product.
