None of those suitable for travel unless you don't mind the weight.

I'd go with either the M50 or 200D.

The 200D is Compact and 453g only,

The 70D on the other hand is semi-pro level 675g in weight, almost 50% additional weight there for body alone.

Is there a reason why you're looking at DSLR?

Because if I were to travel and need a camera I'd go with Sony RX100 Mk III used unit for under RM 2k. biggrin.gif

Opt for a mirrorless instead. It's a lot lighter

Get a mirrorless. It'll basically function like a DSLR and you can use DSLR lenses and all types of lenses.

If you have to buy canon go with Canon EOS M50 or Canon EOS M6 (Used). Both are pretty great.

If you wanna go full frame mirrorless go with any of Sony A7 series. (Though lenses and everything will be more expensive in this route. Might as well go with Canon personally)

Get Sony a6000 (or a6300 /6500 if u have budget) and couple of batteries. I would advice sticking with the kit lens cause it does its job. If u want bokeh, couple with 50mm, 35mm or sigma 30mm f1. 4 primes will do fine.

Canon M50 is also good choice but from the looks of Canon new FF mirror less with different mount, feels like M50 mount going to be killed.

I'm using an EOS M6. Get yourself a 50mm f1.8 EF lens. Then 22mm f2.0 lens EF-M lens (most versatile lens). These 2 lenses will cover 80% of all you wanna shoot and wont break the bank. If you wish to shoot architecture go with any 15mm lens and below. Later if you wish to take photos of birds, sports, etc you can get a telephoto.

As a photographer thats going to be difficult. However if you really want only 1 lens then Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 is your best bet. However expect it to be chunky and heavy

And if all you want is a lot of bokeh, street photography, portraiture then Sigma 18-35mm will be pretty great. Its an amazing lens that is basically a combination of wide prime lenses (big however).

Be aware however that expecting one all-round lens will probably make the lens heavy and expensive. Compared to buying many cheap lenses (lighter individually and you save cash and can resell easier). In the end though if you want the most portable versatile prime lens (fixed focal length) get the Canon 22mm EF-M F2.0 lens (only for mirrorless). it can fit your mirrorless camera into your pocket

What is your budget & what kind of usage for the DSLR?
Mirrorless is one of the option, but the only issue is low battery life.

Not a bad zoom lens. F3.5. If you wanna take portraits of anything you're gonna need to stand pretty far away. Also 24mm on a crop sensor isn't great for landscape. You win some, you lose some. (expensive too)

With that kind of budget, your choice are limited.
If you are new to photography, suggest you buy new set since warranty is covered.
For DSLR, you may consider for 200D with kit lens, but you need to test the feel of grip on your hand.
If grip is too small for your hand, you may consider for 800D with kit lens.
If you interested on mirrorless system, M50 with kit lens is highly recommended. (This is Canon best selling model)

FYI mirrorless cameras having low battery isnt really true anymore. Most mirrorless cameras usually come bundled with extra battery. With the 2 batteries i can easily last it a day (500+ shots)

My advice is simply to research the models of mirrorless or dslr you like. Then go to shops in sunway pyramid or big shopping malls and test the cameras in the showroom out. Thats one way of finding out what you want. Dont forget to budget in your lenses too.

If you get 3-4 used primes maybe you can get away with 1k-1.2k on lenses which will cover most of your photography requirements. If you want one single lens to do it all be prepared to spend 1.5k and upward and it still wont cover all photography needs like 3-4 primes would (like fish eye architecture or ultra bokeh portraits).

24-105 is for full frame. If you put it on crop frame, it will become a standard-tele zoom instead of wide-tele zoom. The sharpness will not be as good, as the pixel pitch is much smaller so defect in glass is more obvious.
For EF-S, you have the following choices:
Canon 18-55 f3.5-5.6 IS STM
Canon 18-135 f3.5-5.6 IS STM
Canon 15-85 f3.5-5.6 IS USM
Canon 17-55 f2.8 IS USM
Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4 OS HSM
Sigma 17-50 f2.8 OS HSM
Tamron 17-50 f2.8 VC/No-VC
Legendary Sigma 18-35 f1.8 Art

If you are getting the 18-35/18-55/18-135, the 35mm focal length is ~30mm on widest end, even narrower than phones. In this case, you might want to get a EF-S 10-18 IS STM or 10-22 USM for wide angle.

P/S : EOS M system is lacking of big aperture lens for you to upgrade later, while their DSLR is way behind of what mirrorless from other brands can offer now, i.e. inaccurate focus, worse image & video quality. I used to use Canon for few years but give up on them due to their unwillingness to push their technology envelope in their body.

Focal range about the same so keeping the better ones.

You should look for G9x or G7x or rx100 m3. Compact camera with 1 inch sensor they really perform really well. I personally used rx100 m3. There picture quality was superb.

To be honest the kit lens will never be able to produce what you have in mind. No matter what camera I'm going for the lens option is the first I'll look for.

I got mine at rm20xx body only that's like 5/6 months back. Then Lazada order Viltrox ef-efm mount. You can start with kit lens la if budget is a concern.

why cannon & why DSLR? if u're just started, start small first & grow from there.
i bought a used (cheap?) mirrorless cam with kit lens & have been using it for travel, & now have bought few more lenses based on my needs, after knowing the limitation of the kits lens & very happy with my travel photo collection thus far..

Firstly, It's depend on the Camera you prefer. If you choose DSLR, you can play around with lens. Canon DSLR are divided into Semi and Full. Semi type DSLR like X00D or X0D, there are limited lens you can enjoy, where as Full type DSLR have more range of lens you can play with.

When I travel, normally I will bring 3 lens, prime, Standard and Medium zoom and Telephoto. I use a lot Standard and Medium zoom lens during travelling.

Canon DSLR are divided into Semi and Full. Semi type DSLR like X00D or X0D, there are limited lens you can enjoy, where as Full type DSLR have more range of lens you can play with.
erm, sorry what are you talking about?

DSLR is DSLR, no such thing as semi DSLR / full DSLR.

Perhaps you're referring to sensor type being APS-C or Full Frame?

If that's the case then you're mistaken on lens range to play with because Canon APS-C sensor body can use EF-S and EF lenses while Canon Full-frame sensor body can only use EF lenses.

No. DSLR is DSLR, biggrin.gif Pretty sure it's referring to APS-C / Full Frame.

If it's Mirrorless it won't be called Semi-DSLR anyway, model numbers were indicated in the post.

M50 is quite nice actually, if you can get a used unit and pair with small lens then it'll work like any other DSLR camera.

Depending on which camera and model, some people like to go ultra wide, some people prefer super zoom (eg 18-200). Others like me, standard zoom. Then there's the others who prefer prime lenses like 24mm, 28mm, 35mm and so on.

Entirely up to preference.

https://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/...rorless-cameras

M50 lens choices limited unless you use converter to can use EF lenses.

EF-M 22mm f/2 STM would be really nice for travel, pancake size lens but with fixed focal length. Approximately 35mm FOV.

I bought a pre loved canon 100d 2 years ago along with a 24mm f2.8 STM lens. I've never been happier. Both of em are so compact, I can even fit it inside my fanny pack.

I know you're a Canon lover, but ever considered micro Four Thirds? Lens collection is currently the best in the mirrorless section, with no other systems coming close.

Thanks,

Weight should be ok,

If 200D vs 70D?
*
Weight is a subjective issue. Some people don't mind totting the semi pro x0D's, D7x00s, or full frame cameras around and some people wanna go as small as possible i.e. mirrorless. For me, I don't mind lugging my 70D even with 2 kids around. It's really subjective if you asked me, plus, if you're travelling, things can be planned and you can sort of predict a little bit what you might be shooting and pack only 1-2 lenses in your bag. For me, I normally decide on 1 lens cause I know I'll mostly be shooting 1 specific thing when I'm going out or if I know I'll just be taking photos of family and children. So it's just a bag with 1 set of camera and lens and the cleaning kit. So at the end of the day, a lot of people will say "so and so is heavy" or overgeneralize, I would say... it really depends on your tolerance.

I saw a good video though from a photographer in youtube talking about being conspicuous=safety and that's why he switched to a smaller rangefinder which I DO think is quite important... anyway, plenty of youtube videos now to refer to including reviews specifically for travel photography/whatever criterion you have in mind.

This sounds a lot like most people who start off dabbing into DSLR territory. You take decent photos with your phone/point and shoot cameras, and probably can't help but wonder if you can possibly get better shots with better equipment. If you research more, you'll realize most websites will say things like "It's not the camera, it's the photographer" or "It's the 6 inches behind the lens that matter". This to me is absolutely a good mantra to live by and I was trying very hard to improve myself as a photographer/post-editing with just a phone camera and see what I could achieve before succumbing to a DSLR purchase. I like how they say things like "If you're not even using your point and shoots/phones to it's maximum ability, then why do you need a DSLR which has MORE complicated and functions that you might not use?" Do take note, that I too am just doing this for a hobby, a side interest which is not my primary interest as well and I use the word photographer very loosely here. Do not let those phrases discourage you though, cause for me, I always like to Google things like "Why shouldn't I buy..." "What is wrong with..." before I make a significantly big purchase.

Based on my limited experience and your description of budget and why you wanna buy a DSLR, I would say it's good to try it out first. Find friends with DSLRs, or whichever avenue you can where trying one is possible and then make a decision. I'm lucky cause I have quite a few friends who trusted me enough to let me use their's for quite a bit (I don't know if I'll be that generous with mine! ahah) and also my work place has one which we could use for events so I had plenty of 'superficial experience' with DSLRs. Believe me, that was part of the poison of getting one! All the units I've ever really had good experience with are Nikon's (maybe one time I used a Canon 550D for a while from a friend)~ On the top of my head, the most recent experiences of these 'borrowed cameras' are 1 friend who had a Nikon D90 which I used to shoot his wedding with, 1 friend had a niceeeeee D7000 whom I shot a sporting event with, and another had a D3300 which I used for his wedding...... but I ended up buying a Canon 70D instead! Couldn't pass up the value and price when I bought it!

If that's not possible, then you just gotta muka tebal a bit and go into a camera shop and molest the demo units kaw2 (might have to return to these shops, so play nice!) before deciding on one.

Final thoughts, don't think too much! try and hold them and go for it on top of Googling for reviews/videos. If you're in KL or places where renting lenses/bodies are more available, I bet you don't mind spending Rm100+- for a day and molest the unit kaw2 before buying one for yourself. It makes a lot of difference when it's in your hands!

Good lucK!
