Chat So I rented a car from SOCAR, Part 2?

Seems like the thread about SOCAR is gone. Can't find it anymore.

So, I'll create my own experience here lah.

Rented a VW Polo for 3 days. Overall, it cost me about RM 288 or so which includes 1080km of free petrol!!!! icon_idea.gif I didn't actually utilize 1000kms as I was going around in the city only. I think I covered about 300-400kms only.

So, the car had been driven to 7k kms already and the condition is still not too bad. Engine, suspension etc are still in almost new car condition. No dents or scratches but the cabin reeks of cigarettes puke.gif Made a complaint to SOCAR and they apologies and told me to send it for a car wash and in return, they'll give me 1 hr free?!?! bruce.gif err... no thanks!

Overall, quite a good experience from downloading the app, registering yourself and taking the car from certain location.

That's if the pick up point is near to your service center then it'll be worth it.

I think it's all computerized as mileage etc is tracked by GPS. Only thing is that they'll need to do periodic car wash from time to time especially those cars that are parked outside under the rain.

They give fuel card inside the car, so just pump using that card

The system knows everything about the car, when i tried to return i forgot to switch off the headlamp also it alerted me in the app saying that light switch is still on

I've personally seen GPS system that track almost everything in the car, including what speed you drive, rev, gears even to the extend if you lean on the car body, it'll be track! GPS system nowadays is much more advance that when combine with the system, it can disable your car if you were speeding recklessly (real time feedback).

You are given specific km with petrol when you rent. I rented for 3 days. Hence, each day is 360km limit. Petrol card is included in the car.

Petrol card is included in the car. Use within your allowed limit. Collect at specific spots. Go download the app and you’ll see the locations.

rented one for the first time for yesterday's outstation using 70% promo for 8 hours. Its a honda city. paid rm29 with free petrol usage up to 255km. new car (VBB).

tried to rent the same car, for the same exact time period, using the same promo code, and the charge is rm35

obviously from the summary in app, the rental rate changes from only rm63 (first rent) to rm116

I rented the new Myvi for kicks. Overall, much more powerful than previous generation. However, engine and gearbox very noisy.

Paid RM 20 for 3 hours. Petrol is free for 100km but I only utilized 30km so still free.

So for this type of rental, it has to be a round trip?

i.e. rent from where, return to where

I know there are one way deals from klia/klia2, but other than that, possible to pick up at one location and drop off at another location?

still remembered i had to pay for a day rent of myvi last year and had to pay rm150

whereas i just use the myvi to pickup stuff from my campus to my home lel

and returned it back within 7 hours

i also woundering , but since they say can unlock the car with apps , means do not keep personnel belonging inside the car, the car can be drive away anytime by the staff , u park at some open space parking lot the car may drive away by staff.

just a 20k km car.

tyres near bald.
wiper bad shape.real bad.
front bumper clips drop. spoiled.
dirty interiors.
brakes seriously need service.
EO real dirty.
coolant lacking.
windshield washer no water.

seriously the tyre bear bald IS A BIG TURN OFF. Brakes too.

so dangerous to drive. slippery and other.

I got a nails on tyre and get it fixed, can't claim..... omg...

overall. this type of service really excellent. but with our 3rd world mentality and hold no responsibility to others.

is a really turn off.

kudos for socar. but they need to constantly service their car..

I should rent one and drive it hard, can do power slide, hand brake pull test, overrev the engine with aircon on and the gearbox, do wheelieburn tyre marks, then send it back.

I read through the review on facebook, it seem a lot of car in bad condition and socar staff didn't review it. Even Gocar also facing same issue.

in fact lots of WM-ians tell me how great socar is
thn i tell them the disadvantage that they never consider
they kinda fell into silent and think abt it

Its their own car lah, not lease from other people. U see all their cars are brand new and have commercial license sticker on their windshield and all of their roadtax are only less than RM10. All the cars in their range have the same exact specifications. Like for example the Passat is Trendline Plus variant, the Altis is the 1.8G variant, the MyVi is 1.5H, Iriz is the 1.3 exec variant, and so on and so forth

actually its not profitable for car owners like us to lease the car to socar due to the expensive price of cars here and the maintenance costs

but its definitely profitable for car manufacturers if they start something like socar, cos the car is cost price to them and maintenance is also much cheaper for them, proton n perodua should look into this and start a lease car platform just like socar

Why close down very fast? They are practically doing similar to what traditional car rental companies have been doing. Car rental companies also the car is under special insurance and road tax-for their clients to drive.

Gocar is basically owned by Mayflower Car Rental.

The tapau plastik air one they can actually find back previous user and fine him. That's what they do in developed countries. Dirty as well, well, they should do proper car maintenance.

basically i think socar is indirectly helping those giants to advertise. car advertisement on the road + this and that is real costly nowadays. but if a win win model - feeling fhe experience with a affordable cost, this will be the future venture model. after reading this, am ready to least a cae from socar

car rental companies' car take care of their car for their customer whereas socar didn't as seen in this thread

based on my exp I shared earlier, the only problem with socar is the car badly maintained. and the user problem. they don't treat the car nicely. this is 3rd world mentality. but socar should have see it coming. too bad they are too new to punish the bad apple. I supposed they have strong customer base, they start to punish the wrong doers. I really hope so.

I myself have a not too good exp. but overall I think this I a very good breakthrough to torn down the bad bad car rental, the traditional. old cars, bad maintained, everything was wrong with them. cut throat price.

in this socar, the 2nd reserved with same duration, the price actually fly high. so meaning, they have the price floating.

I honestly think if SOCAR really strict in rules and regulations. maintaining a good car wasn't a big problem.

their approach is real damn good if compared to those rental company.

they should have team of people to collect car. not letting user return suka suka.

Its not really about socar....its the user problem.. Maybe socar should introduce some kind of point system for user. If they use a good gps device, they should know how the user use the car...and maybe they can put incar dashcam to also record the driver and passanger

Are u sure about it? Back then my friend saying not entire car fleet is under socar ownership, some BMW is under ownership of individual and they sign a leasing agreement to socar. The leasing price is much higher than the car instalment so owner enjoice.

Commercial license doesn't mean is all under socar also.

yes, the dashcam is towards the front road but it also record sounds, etc. I think that's enough to find fault with abusive users. I took a few socars and the dashcam was plugged out when I took the car. Definitely been done by the previous user.

And also yes, I experience smelly smoker's car when I took the car. Complaint to SOCAR and they told me to get the car wash and in return, they'll reimburse me in terms of FREE 1 HOUR rental instead of CASH!?!?!?!? Why should I go though the hassle for FREE 1 HOUR RIDE!?!?!?! doh.gif doh.gif doh.gif

I'm a frequent user of socar despite having personal car for myself.
Always rent the Altis as is much premium yet not that different from City and Vios in terms of pricing.


The concept is very nice, I like the afforable rate and free 30km worth of petrol that is provided for every hour.

Customer service could've been improved.
The petrol card at times, will reject your transaction sometimes doesn't even work at particular card.

To fuel up using your own money is rather a gamble, because it's gonna be weeks of waiting and probably won't get back your money.

I feel bad for Socar when people can't appreciate nice things. Some brand new cars already have scuffs and scratches.

The dashcam was disconnected and kept inside the glovebox. When I try to reconnect it, the SD card is missing.

Super-Bad experience!
Helped my sister to reserve for the first time for a 250+km roundtrip

Booked a night before drive, VIOS at Plaza Larkin, JB.
Then my sister scroll down the comment section of the car. Damn, updated few hours ago by recent renter that the tyre is cracking/very bad. Then scroll down for more can see comments with 'tyre problem, got sound at 60km/h speeding' etc and that's from October sumore.

Filed a report to socar immediately with screenshot of those comments.

This morning 11am, when wanna drive, couldn't find the car. Searched around the building/parking lot until the basement. Suddenly at 11.30am+, the reservation in the app is gone!

Tried to call their number, never answer one. Gonna send email to socar.

Any idea which agencies should I report this matter? APAD(SPAD)?

Have to say SOCAR is fantastic when the trip goes smoothly. Unfortunately the amount of problems faced during bookings have been ridiculous. Most of the time the Mesra card is not functioning (have this happen when driving the Myvi, Passat, Mini, BMW). Some of the cars are way past the service intervals. Missing parking passes are an issue. I once failed to return the car because it's internal GPS are non functional. But the worst thing about their service is the ridiculous customer hotline. It will consistently aland automatically end my calls after 2 minutes of waiting even though I am contacting them due to some emergencies.

cabin cam is a must. hardwire it. no smoking.

but Malaysia..... enforcement is forever a myth.....

True, mine myself never had problem with socar. However my sister really badluck. Bad car, komplen, then thrle car not found (I suspect their staff brought to workshop).

I came across the following clause in their T&Cs. The way I read it, the car is not insure against theft and you will need to replace the whole car if it is stolen. I ask SOCAR clarification, and after 4 days still no reply. So I decided not to take their car. Anyone realize this, or know if their insurance includes theft cover?

Isn’t it licensed to offer rental in this case?

Better just book with hawks or Avis for peace of mind.

Can drop of anywhere and convenient. They even do delivery.

Good point. I never notice this TnC. If socar expects users to pay for the whole car in an event of theft, then it would be a major put off to rent one!

Actually, I’m guessing that it’s pretty easy to steal a socar. As long as you gain access to the drivers seat, you can just start the car and drive it away!

Socar is pretty alright when things work, but when they don't - you're really at the mercy of whatever they want - and you have no recourse through their customer service who think that they are absolutely right.

A very good business model, but I think will not last long.

I'm a frequent SOCAR user, and I can definitely tell malaysians take advantage of these services.

- smoke and food leftovers in the car
- many cars missing the Socar stickers, to showoff that car to their friends? lol
- drive fast over bumps and drive dangerously
- some car parts missing (Spare Tyre, Trims and etc)
- dashcam missing / stolen

However, SOCAR also very bad at management.

Terrible customer service.

Petrol Card sometimes not working and claiming processes takes weeks (sometimes don't even get to claim.)

Application sometimes randomly crashed and your booking gone, with little help from support team.

People getting charged and penalty randomly without proper investigation.

Wow! Seems like SOCAR is getting worse. Their management should look into this. When I rented the car, all was excellent! Only complaint was somebody smoked in the car. shakehead.gif

Yesterday they charged me RM340 when I ran the battery flat after leaving the car lights on. My fault, I admit, but it is by no means a reasonable amount! They charged for multiple offences that were related to the root one, and furthermore charging more than what they listed in the T&C.

Customer service stonewalled me with copypaste replies. There's no point arguing with them when they're holding my money, so I ended up calling my bank to report the penalty transactions as unauthorized laugh.gif

Same sentiment here. In fact, I understand from the SOCAR operation side, they keep having theft issues.
1. Stolen fuel card, dashCam, any removable items from the vehicle.
2. Then there’s syndicate to swap the spare parts, car battery, skirting, rim tyres, etc.

The cost of replacing these items back is hurting them more than the investment for vehicles/fleet.

Oh well. That’s MALAYSIA for us to ponder

I don't see why not. As long as you return the vehicle at the same location. Any extra mileage incurred, they'll charge accordingly.

if u can estimate the distance by using maps@waze, u can calculate how many day u need.

Sorry another question. Regarding "One way hot deal" out of klia/klia2 back to the car original location. Anyone successful reserved and sent back the car using this method?

1. How to reserve? Coz if the car is not drop at the airport yet, you cant book. And is base on first come first serve basis. Plus the stated time frame is only estimation.

2. If successful reserved, how long given time and free KM for you to return the car back?

3. Is FOC? No charges?

Not all cards Mia la. So far (touch wood), I haven't come across. Best to get the car with more than 50% fuel so that you won't have to worry about the card.

Have you tried one-way hotdeal from KLIA/KLIA2 to city centre? I had tried recently. Although the journey was at zero fee, I had to bear the parking fee at KLIA/KLIA2 (non-gazetted SOCAR parking). I had posted the request for parking fee reimbursement for RM18. However, it was refused by Socar by saying that I had to bear the parking fee at KLIA2

Never experienced 1 way to KLIA. Perhaps you can share where should the parking be for socar customers.

Happened to me once. Forget about their customer service, it’s basically next to none! What I did was to rent the same car for the minimum hours. Took my things and that’s it!

Just planned to get socar for a week, tempted with 50% discount code (capped at rm200).
However when survey car, majority are with <50% fuel. Some even with 8% fuel balance. Ask socar b4 book, they said new policy no more fuel card, pay using own card n claim under apps.

Btw not sure if I'll be able to rent a car from my area to KLIA in the next few days as the one-way cars are all still stuck at KLIA.
Nobody is driving them back to the spot here yet lol. They're all on the "One-way Hot Deals" promo at RM0 but still no takers.
Will check again closer to the date.

I think one of the issues with SoCar is the difficulty in getting one-way rides to and from KLIA efficiently.
Unless they drive back themselves to the original location.

Read the socar official FB page. So many bad review and complains. Mostly due to unresponsive or bad customer service.

- Petrol reimbursement taking ages to refund
- Car missing from location (most probably due to previous user simply return)
- Reserveation done long time ago but being cancelled

Can’t unlock because of no line from the phone. Usually at a basement car park. However, you still can connect to the car’s Bluetooth system that can be connected to your smartphone to unlock the car. Not many people knows this.

No bro... definitely not working for socar. Just another user sharing experience. So far, my experience had been quite good except for minor problems like smelly or dirty car.

I think socar always update their vehicles. I remember seeing brand new vehicles around my area. Saw a new ALTIS but I didn’t rent.

I used once passat at cyberjaya back in Nov 18, the car was due to service, already exceeded about 5k km extra than required mileage service.

Call socar, they said already noted. But after a month or so, still look the car comments pending for service from most user.

I believe the passat cyberjaya will k.o.

Don't think they'll care about servicing the car as it'll incur revenue lost from it's downtime. Also, I think they are lacking of manpower to upkeep the cars.

A friend of mine who used to work in the company told me the company almost close shop last 2 months due depletion of funds, somehow they manage to secure some investment last mins and manage to continue on

Since it's 1 way to airport, I took the car from 4-6pm, ie. 2 hours which is more than adequate from my place. The mileage given is 20km per hour which translate to 40km in total. Now, the distance from my house to airport is 45-50km (as per google map) whereas socar calculate it at 33km only. So...

for number 1. yes, any 1km extra 20cent per km

for number 2, remember to input the car parking slot number when u return the car..

very simple and easy only

There's a one way deal which takes the socar from any location around Klang Valley to either KLIA or KLIA2. There's also socar service from KLIA/KLIA2 to certain destination in Klang Valley. Got many with 0% coz the user don't want to pump petrol. I took 1 and luckily the petrol station was just around the corner. Fill up and returned the car with 50% balance.

I don't know why people don't want to fill it up. I hear 'a lot' say the claim back process is long but mine just took me 4-5 working days? Reasonable la....

It's been like a year, Socar still doesn't allow one way trip to places other than KLIA?

I heard somewhere that I can pickup the car from it's original Socar Zone and drive to another Socar Zone and then people from Socar will drive back to it's original spot, is it true?

I just used their D2D service with RM 0 booking fees. You can pick where do you want to pick up the car and where do you want to drop it off. Did it 2x. Very satisfied coz I don't need to wait for my car during service.

This because im renting for socar but havent drive for more 1 year, so my friend will drive so now i juz check socar rules n juz knew that the driver need to be the renter n 2nd driver only so basically im fcuked up😅

Like any rental companies, ANYONE besides the registered user CAN use the car. However, if any accidents arises, then good luck to the registered renter!

Also, for SOCAR, only the registered renter can lock and unlock the car through the app. So, it's gonna be quite inconvenience to the other drivers if they want to lock/unlock the car. Alternatively, just leave the car unlock BUT anyone can go and START the car by then!

But when wanna book the price increased to rm900plus.

You can get socar now at Ipoh, Penang and Johor. Check in your map. Like I said, don't be surprise they'll invest in more states as they just had a capital injection.

when i started using socar
i thought it's available nationwide as well

so 1 day, my car's battery died in a mall...so i tried using socar....i thought my GPS malfunctioned because no result appeared
later i found out socar is not available in sabah laugh.gif

i would love them to invest here but highly unlikely because from 1 place to another here is quite far.....and socar imposes a limited amount of KM u can drive depending on how many hours u rented(including petrol)
road condition isn't great as well...means wear and tear will be higher...it's hard to make money

Car is heavily dented and scratched, heavy cigarettes smell wtf man srsly Malaysians suk kok la won't take care of things. SPARE TYRE AND JACK ALSO KENA STOLEN WTF, even the petrol card is missing wtf wei. Car also very dirty aduh.. Oh ya, and the car petrol warning light also light up liao, come on la bruh, pam la full tank zz can claim whut tf.

8am go collect car, suddenly got technical issue lmao waited for 2 hours, until 10++ only server up and drive away. Petrol reimbursed rather quick. Within 3 days masuk bank already.

So car also kind enough, compensate 1 two hours free drive and 1 three hours free drive (any car)

Car badly brakes need to service, Tyre also botak (probably due to the drivers fking abuse this car)

Idea is good, service is good. What's bad is our mentality like to abuse nice things zzz

Too many bad experiences already. From dirty and seriously smelly car to flat tyre when I took the car at 9pm! Where can find tyre shop to patch at 9pm in the night! doh.gif

Not to mentioned receiving the car at seriously empty tank (odometer says 0km!!) and the nearest petrol station is 7-8km away! Damn scary experience!

Anyway, it was great when it first started but now quality is really to the pits! The only thing is that they are the only one that we can rent by the hours.

There are a few Socar that can travel 1 way without returning it back to it's original place. However, it's limited to certain places such as Johor Immigration, etc. You need to check on the app on this.

Not sure about GoCar.

Oh I got one experience. One day I rent SoCar then parked at hulu air terjun place. Then when come back after mandi manda, I cannot unlock car because no internet connection. I panik, then after few times trying can get internet signal. Phew

This was my second time rent car, long time ago.

I could see a future in this rental car services

Perhaps someday many of these socar would parked along the streets and you could easily drove off with just a touch of your ID

the only problem with socar is they require you to drove it back to where you collected it.........

Hopefully better security tech could come sooner and it would eliminate our overprice car ownership

My review of socar so far. Have rented it couple of times. Sometimes half a day, sometimes full day. Some cars are good clean condition, some cars side mirror cover missing, some cars damn dirty with ciggie smell inside, and yesterday rented one, OMFG, the car looks worse than DBKL garbage truck. Must be some orang hutan rented the car. Socar really needs to keep their cars clean as their prices are not cheap even for myvi. They cant keep asking customers to wash it for 1 hour free LOL Unless give 40% discount on next booking if help to wash, then thats a good deal. Nah i think im gonna skip Socar and look for better cheaper alternatives.

Was wondering if it was possible to do that instead of getting a rental car to go somewhere and meetup with someone, and then drive back to return the car.

Same view. Problems is there is no counter measure done by socar itself. I went to rent socar passat at cyberjaya back in end 2018. At that time the car pop up service intervals required which already exceeded 3k km. As a car lover, I do call socar for them to note or send it for service then. When returned the car, most review are pretty similar, car need service.

2 month after, I do rent the exact same car at same place cyberjaya. What a surprise, the pop up service still there. What a poor service.

The car was full with rubbish inside and they only compensate me for 1 hour free. Well I got not time to send it for car wash, why not their socar guys done it ?

i cannot directly say limited choice, i would say really depends on the area u want to take the car
because if say airport, i've seen plenty of gocar in airport, plenty of choice

When I checked last time, if the car is stolen under your watch, you have to replace it. Not covered by their insurance. You guys may re-verify this.

use trevo instead for longer rental time...theres also moovby which is cheaper, but havent try yet

Hi guys! I was a frequent socar user whenever if I'm in KL for worktrip [which was back in 2019 aka pre pandemic] just downloaded the new socar app and found out so many things have changed which has more charges?

Can sifus enlighten me with the mess that I have left out? haha

1. So it's mandatory for the SCDW now? Previously don't have one kan?
2. Mileage Package - this is where I am legit confused, previously the wasn't any so called mileage package before. So for now, does this means socar price is just pure car rental price and then the mileage is an additional charges again?
3. Seems like no more petrol card hor? Usually how long does the reimbursement takes one ah?
