Before subscribing, people usually test a celco's 4G network signal with its prepaid Starter Pack(= costs about RM10 only), not with Maxis HUP35 and UMobile GX38 and Celcom XUP35(= cost RM35 each) and the coming Digi DUP35. For the latter, people usually look at reviews or forum reports.

I never use the WiFi at SB as I prefer to use my own data plan.

Stood in front of the cashier for almost 5 minutes before I could login to the SB app.

I’m sure umobile works wonderfully for many people but for my use case, maybe it’s not for me.

Yes I totally agree. That’s one of the reasons many choose to continue to subscribe to the very expensive Maxis service besides its more superior 4G connectivity. Because Maxis rarely has such problem despite the absence of VoWiFi. Like I mentioned many times, nobody wants to pay for expensive service given a choice.

VoWiFi helps with the poor reception issue for normal phone call and SMS, it however doesn’t solve your poor data service. What is the point of having unlimited data on your mobile phone if your telco is unable to provide stable data service ? That’s another reason why people are willing to pay more and stay with the more expensive Big 3. Because like you said, else people will start complaining.
The telco can disable the VoWiFi feature to call back to Malaysia from overseas. Early on Digi did not enable that feature overseas. The feature was silently made available about 2 years ago, reported by a fellow Forum Lowyat user that he was able to connect to WiFi Calling in Amsterdam on his Digi line. He later also reported back that he was not charged a single cent when making phone calls back to Malaysia. Since then I’ve been taking full advantage of it whenever I’m overseas.

Terminated my GX50 today, it was fun while it lasted.

Bought an Xpax SIM pack for RM10, signed up for the RM35 unlimited data plan (3mbps). All is well again, streamed youtube on my phone with the screen off while driving from south of the island (qb mall) back to the north with zero dropouts.

stopped by at starbucks tg tokong, the data connection was great.

may consider umobile again in a year.

Don't need super high speeds personally. Good coverage and consistent 5mbps can fulfill my current needs. Hope xpax can upgrade from present speed cap of 3mbps to 5-6mbps at least.

I have a 500mbps fibre connection at home for big downloads anyway.

Umobile offers relatively more for the same or cheaper price, was really hoping that it was a fit for me.

Had you found out why the internet was not running on U Mobile even it has 3 bars on your phone?

Without U Mobile GX plans which was launched on 2018, I believe MAXIS definitely will not increase the data quota for their postpaid users and launched their Hotlink unlimited data and call plan this month.

Same with CELCOM XPAX.

Businesspeople are not stupid to do that.

There are no perfect telco in Malaysia. It depends on the location.

Many are not jumping into U Mobile not because U Mobile is really bad in their locations. But is because they heard from those who were working in the phone shops saying that U Mobile is bad without trying it themselves.

I also one of them before 11 July 2018 because I also have many friends who worked in different phone shops in Ipoh.

But when I saw one of them started using U Mobile, including all his staffs in all branches, I was curious and wanted to try and see how U Mobile performed in my locations.

For you, how many Mbps just can consider as fast internet and how many Mbps can consider as slow internet?

For 3G, I think the celcos have downgraded it to the basic about 1Mbps from 4.7Mbps and for mostly voice-calls and SMS usage.

Is your 4G+ signal strength showing 3 bars out of 5.? If so, that may be the cause of poor upload speed.

Seems likely only Celcom has not downgraded its 3G network because the 3G-less TM Unifi Mobile and MVNOs have to ride-share on Celcom's 3G/4G network.

You are mistaken or misunderstanding the icon, I am not using hotspot/tethering. Even if using hotspot/tethering, the speedtest.net result should be the same as non-tethering/non-hotspotting.

To add, the 5km/3 miles maximum range of a 4G/3G cell tower is for Internet data. For voice calls and SMS, it is up to 10 miles/16km.

I think the 4 bars or 5 bars icon on our smartphones actually shows the cellular signal strength for voice calls, ie not for Internet data.
