QUOTE(imnotabot @ Nov 25 2019, 12:18 PM) I looked through LYN, and it seems like my TP-Link C1200 does not support OpenWRT. Can anyone recommend me a router that can easily support OpenWRT, and works with Unifi? Budget below RM500. I don't need much features, just having dual band is enough. My Unifi is only 100mbps. Only need to support max 5 users. I need OpenWRT support because I want to explore it, also because I'm planning to use it as OpenVPN client. You can try Asus RT-AC58U.

QUOTE(magika @ Nov 27 2019, 10:34 AM) Guys, my house using network cabling for all floors. Am trying to find a compact wifi access point which can plug into existing powerpoint. At present i am using wifi range extender 2 units Tplink RE650 but it seems a waste as i am using ethernet cable as its backhaul and not using what its meant for as a range extender. By compact, you mean small & stylish, preferably no antennas sticking out? TP-Link Deco M4 / M5 / M9 can work with Ethernet backhaul. But I think M9 is abit large. The older D-Link DIR868L is also quite compact (cylinder shape) and cheap. I'm using one as Master Bedroom AP, just next to bed. I'll shoot a picture later if you want to see. Tenda Novas, not sure if they can work with Ethernet backhaul. If you have budget, you can also go for Ubiquiti Unifi APs. Compact, stylish, and feature-packed. QUOTE(magika @ Nov 27 2019, 02:51 PM) Thanks. Actually Tplink RE650 is what i want but without the range extender . Mounted directly on powerpoint. Ubiquiti is stylish and perfect for mounting on ceiling. I think your RE650 can run in AP mode.

I'm very lucky my home is already wired. So I can use 3 budget routers as APs 😁

1. Run speedtest on computer01 using Speedtest Windows app or Edge browser. Is your CPU close to 100% during speedtest?
2. TP-Link Deco M4 (2 pack)

QUOTE(Eterman @ Dec 18 2019, 04:50 PM) are number of cpu cores important? with quite a number of devices connected at same time, should i also search for dual core or even quad core routers? How many devices? What kind of expected activities? eg Youtube / Netflix / gaming / Torrent / download? Normally consumer routers can support almost 100 devices without problem, provided sufficient Internet bandwidth. They're many components within a router, not just CPU, also Wifi modules, Wifi radio, storage, and firmware/software. Can't judge just by comparing specs. Eg Tenda AC18 & Asus RT-AC68U is almost identical in hardware but the Asus is better in performance & features. That's why good reviews eg smallnetbuilder is important.

QUOTE(kk131 @ Jan 6 2021, 11:29 AM) I don't have any experience with mesh networks, I'm using an AC68U with an AC66u & a Mi-mini as AP's with ethernet backhaul. You can buy an Asus AX router and use your AC68U as a node. Running ethernet between the 2 will give you more wireless bandwidth as you're not using the WiFi for backhaul. I see promotion of mesh systems as more a marketing tactic, it does have some advantages to simplify set-up. I changed my 3 APs to TP-Link Decos not for outright speed, but for fast Wifi roaming. You're always connected to the closest AP no matter where you are, and it's seamless & fast that you don't realize it happens. I can bring my laptop upstairs during Teams meeting, and my meeting/office VPN is not disrupted at all.

QUOTE(hlmilk112 @ Jan 13 2021, 09:47 PM) Dunno Malaysia will cost how much for this stuff. Wonder about its performance also Laptop users better upgrade the stock Wifi card with Intel AX200. Quite easy to do for most laptops.

QUOTE(kk131 @ Jan 19 2021, 12:23 PM) Lenovo limits approved Wifi cards in the BIOS, you have to search for a whitelisted BIOS and flash it. Ah yes, evil Lenovo 😡

QUOTE(Matchy @ Jan 20 2021, 05:21 PM) Can I add mesh wifi to my existing network? Currently I have a wifi router, and would like to extend the coverage. From what I know so far, if I buy a mesh system, it will replace my router? Prefer not to replace it because it has more features such as VPN/DDNS/etc... I dont think most mesh system have this. Yes you can. I set my TP-Link Decos to AP mode.

QUOTE(soonwai @ Jan 26 2021, 02:02 PM) Thanks! Mikrotik not affected since they don't dnsmasq. TP-Link & D-Link still unknown? OpenWRT, Tomato, even Cisco & Ubiquiti use dnsmasq since it's very efficient DNS forwarder. dnsmasq is disabled on my Edgerouter as I rely on my Adguard Home server, which doesn't need dnsmasq. Besides, my Adguard Home only uses DOT upstreams, no DNS upstream at all. So I'm safe here? 😬 This post has been edited by taqu: Jan 26 2021, 04:56 PM

QUOTE(kk131 @ Jan 27 2021, 10:14 AM) DoT is most likely using Stubby with DNSMasq local caching. Quick check on github shows Adguard Home uses its own dnsproxy app, therefore no need for Stubby. No mention of dnsmasq too, so I assume it's built-in too. I'm a github noob so I might be wrong

That old D-Link router can barely cover a single floor. The Asus routers you mention should be great.

Had similar problem with that switch (TL-SG108E) & Deco M5, changing IGMP snooping no longer works with the white STB. It works fine for years until recently.
Ended up using Mi Box S & Unifi TV app.

QUOTE(penew @ Feb 21 2021, 08:21 PM) Quite an overkill. But since using it, i don't recall any disconnection so far. ..been running smoothly and stable, so I guess it's worth it. Now I get full 300mbps on my Note 20 - even 200+mbps on 5GHz band out in the garden (around 50meters away from the router) I want cheaper options, there's the AX20. Great performance But I can no longer look at routers having many antennas
