Out of curiousity (a very noobie query) aside from the telephone, are we able to plug in a second router directly to Unifi GPON Terminal?

Not managed to try this due to only owning 1 router.
*
Can but probably not what you have in mind. You can have a 2nd internet subscription from, say, Maxis and you'll plug their router into port2 of the BTU.

Does router really need fan cooler? Or does it have any effect on the router like performance or life span?
If anyone uses it, mind telling why?

Depends on the router and it’s design. I don’t use fans and my MikroTik RB2011 has been running since 2011.

My AirPort Extreme runs pretty hot so it has a built-in fan.

bought, installed but speed dropped from 500mbps when connect direct to router to 100mbps max when using switch.
was a DLINK unmanaged switch.

Check your cables first. One of my two 1Gbps from downstairs to upstairs went down to 100Mbps a few weeks ago. I seldom use up all 2Gbps so didn't realise it until a few days ago when a file transfer ran at half the speed. Turned out that someone knocked one of the cables while cleaning the "server" room.

the ports installed are all cat6, have tested connecting the switch to router via 5e cable, no avail. still running direct from router seems to solve the issue.

what is the ip to connect to the interface? it is a DGS-108.

would still need to get a better router for wifi coverage, a lot of dead spots near the rooms. just thinking if using a switch can solve this, then can get the AX-86U instead.

thanks!

No web admin for a dumb switch. Look at the lights. Check your cables.

Is it better to get 3x Deco M5 or 2x Deco M9? Deco M9 is wider range compared to M5 right?

Are the Decos going to be wired?

ya i know M9 is better, but my budget only allow for either 2x M9 or 3x M5.
nope.
*
If not wired, better use M9 or anything with 3 radios so it can uplink with one of the 5Ghz radios and the other is used for your devices. Since you’re limited to 2 units, note that you can’t put them too far apart otherwise it’ll fallback to the 2.4Ghz radio as the uplink then you end up with the same speed as M4 or M5.

If wired, M4 and M5 are quite close in performance while M9 is a bit faster if your device supports 3 streams.

Just a heads-up on the dnsspooq security flaws with dnsmasq

https://www.welivesecurity.com/2021/01/20/d...ache-poisoning/

I know that Asus is working on patching their firmware for the vulnerability.
*
Thanks!
Mikrotik not affected since they don't dnsmasq.
TP-Link & D-Link still unknown?

Unfortunately in the comments Blacktubi says this method no longer works  cry.gif
*
I just read the comments. This will or should work. All Blacktubi is saying is that he didn't have the opportunity to try it out as he's no longer using Unifi. As far as networking is concerned, there's really nothing to prevent something like this from working. It's possible that it's related to that particular smart switch. That I wouldn't know as I don't use that switch.

Need to use smart switch with VLAN capable only can use Hypptv is it? If those normal unmanaged switch probably cannot?
*
Yeah cause it needs to be able to split the vlans to separate ports. Normal dumb switch cannot do that. Alternatively you can also look for 2nd hand routers that can handle vlans but which people dun want already because it is too slow as a router. I bought a few Mikrotik RB750GL for RM50 about a year or 2 ago. It’s got 5 gigabit ports and handles vlans just fine.

Hi sifus,
Want to ask i just installed TP Link X20 for my unifi, unfortunately realised that the unit only has 2 ports which one is taken by modem and the other taken by the HyppTV.
I want to ask any way to set the HyppTV port to be able to use with other devices? Eg Android TV Box?
Also any way to "force" devices to always stick to the 5ghz band instead of jumping between 2.4 and 5?
Thanks
*
Try this though YMMV. Tell TM you got your Mesh wifi from them. And that you want to use HyppTV but you also want to use the single free port for LAN. Hopefully they'll reconfigure HyppTV to one of the ports on the modem.

Just say TPLink Deco Mesh wifi if they ask you what model it is. You may have to lie or make dunno if they insist on the model of the mesh.

My auntie has the M4 which I bought for her, not from TM. This is what we did to get TM to reconfigure vlan600 to come out through the modem.

I checked online prices, I don't really need WIFI 6 now even though my PC and mobile is WIFI 6 ready. Bandwidth is 100M only. So if WIFI 6 I might go TPLink Deco X60 2 pack or go TPLink Deco 5 (2 pack). What do you think? One ground floor one upper floor. If get Deco 9+ I might as well get X60.
*
The most important difference for me is that M9 has 3 radios (tri-band) while X60 has 2. X90 is tri-band. Quite important if your backhaul is wireless. If ethernet then X60 is perfect.

QUOTE(westlife @ Jul 24 2022, 01:28 PM)
indeed. Depending on how they implement all these technology actually.

So must really test to know.

My Linksys mesh has this function called client steering but it does not work so well. Band steering no issue which it always try to keep me on 5GHz. I have this prob that my speed is not consistent if client steering is on. But discovered and turn it off now gets consistent speed no issue anymore.

Now my settings
1) band steering - on
2) node steering - on
3) client steering - off

Works well. Going to have one more child node to see if it works even better.

Now only two nodes (parent and client).

...
*
All of these are standards based (or they won't won't work with any random device.) With exceptions like Ubiquity's now-deprecated "Zero Handoff". Now they have "Fast Roaming" that is not 802.11r but I've no idea what this actually does.

Client steering sounds like 802.11k and/or 802.11v.
I guess node steering is like client steering but for nodes. I assume nodes are APs. If 2 nodes only, then no point lah.

Band steering is always good to have. Most clients nowadays will automatically prefer 5Ghz over 2.4Ghz anyway.

Having 2 SSIDs for 2.4Ghz & 5Ghz is kinda like human band steering.

But most important to remember is that the AP never makes the decision, it's always the device that decides which BSSID it wants to connect to. The most the AP can actively do is to kick the client off if its signal is too low. I do this on my Mikrotik APs bcos Mikrotik wifi sux, no 802.11kvr.

Lastly lowering transmit power almost always help. MY max is 30dBM or 1000mW. I have both my 5Ghz APs at 25dBM (300mW) and my 2.4Ghz at 20dBM (100mW.) This largely depends on your house and neighbours.

As blacktubi mentioned, Deco M-series works pretty well. That's my go-to APs for family & friends. Can't separate the SSIDs but that's how I like it anyway so that's fine. The only complain I have is their SmartDHCP (in AP mode) which can't be turned off. It comes on when it's unable to obtain an address from your main router and starts assigning addresses to everyone. I think they may have put in an on/off toggle for that now.

Of the following, which one would you buy?

Asus XD4 (RM500)
Deco X20 (RM600)
DLink M15 (RM700)

Already reach my threshold of 4 AX devices so want to get a cheap Wifi6 mesh while waiting (forever) for Mikrotik to release their Wifi6 hardware.

Will be using:
- 2 units as access point
- wired ethernet backhaul
- Unifi 800Mbps
- Router is Mikrotik RB5009

Asus for better firmware updates.
TP-Link cheap for performance but expect lesser or no firmware updates.

XD4 signal is slightly stronger and faster than Deco X20.

Deco X20 roaming and steering is better. Also, you get 802.11r if you don't use WPA3. For some reasons, Wi-Fi association haven't figure out 802.11r on WPA3.

If you are used to Mikrotik roaming then ASUS roaming will not be a downgrade.

BTW what AP you are coming from?
*
Hah Mikrotik, what roaming? sweat.gif Only now they started to add 802.11r and k. And only for latest 2 or 3 models WIFI5 models. doh.gif

Anyway, thanks very much for the opinions. I think I will go for X20. Just ordered it.

Currently using hAP ac2 upstairs and hAP ac downstairs.

Dammit Mikrotik, 4 days after I receive my X20, they leak Mikrotik hAP ax2.

Anyway, here's my mini review of TPLink Deco X20 2-pack.

My router is Mikrotik RB5009. Unifi 800. The Deco X20 replaces my previous APs, Mikrotik hAP ac2 and hAP AC. APs are all wired.

As usual, Deco setup and pairing is easy. Actually even easier than before. The 2-pack came pre-paired. Pun intended. Just setup the first Deco X20 with the Deco app then turn on the 2nd unit, go toilet, come back and it'll be paired. After that, just need to do 2 things, change to AP mode and turn on Fast Roaming.

The good
• Roaming works as expected. Pretty good and very happy with it.
• Getting quite ok wifi speed with iPhone 13 Pro. Consistently 450-500Mbps in the same room as Deco. Speedtest can occasionally go as high as 650Mbps.
• Fairly cheap. I got the X20 2-pack from Shopee for RM579 with 10% coins cashback of RM57.90.

The bad
• My Aqara hub (2.4Ghz only) keeps connecting to the Deco that's further away upstairs while the nearer Deco is 10ft away in the same room. With my Mikrotik APs, I solved this problem by reducing the transmit power of the 2.4Ghz band. Which brings me to...
• No way to adjust the transmit power of 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz on the Decos.
• 2.4Ghz are set to 40Mhz channel width. Cannot change this to 20Mhz.
• The app is nice but can be quite cumbersome when trying to troubleshoot. For example, in the main list of all connected clients, I can select a device and look at the stats, where it's connected, etc... However when I go to the individual Deco and look at the connected clients, I can't do any of that. I can only dis/enable Mesh support for that device.

A few speedtests with different devices.

My Aqara M1S have the same issue on my ASUS ZenWiFi system. The good thing with AiMesh is they allow binding a particular device to a certain node.

Deco is developing a similar function but the beta is only available on Deco M5 and M9 Plus now.

If you don't mind, can you test the loaded latency on Deco X20 with Ethernet backhaul? You can test it on fast.com
*
In the end, I turn off beamforming, that seems to have prevented my Aqara Hub from wandering. It still does once in a while.

fast.com test. X20, ethernet backhaul & iPhone 13 Pro.
