Yo Bridgestone,
close it, but make sure it doesn't get too hot! they overheat very easily when left closed if you've been using lots of cpu power |

If you shut your notebook, the heat produced by the hard disk may damage the screen, causing severe repair issues that may not be covered by Apple.

Just make sure when you shut the screen, it goes into sleep mode, you can confirm that by looking at the light next to the IR receiver. It's in sleep mode if it is flashing on and off slowly. Just like snoring =)

ive done that so many times without shutdown/sleep.. and with vista, it seems that it does something like 'homekeeping' activity when i closed the lid. i can see the hdd light blinking right after I closed the lid. but so far, there is no problem. and my lappy also run 24/7.

sleep = power energy saving .
if the machine sleep , it means it wont do anything ...including producing heat ... my friend done it so many times on his PowerBook G4 ...and still running fine like Vista case , i think the machine never sleep . the machine will do the job even in sleep mode , including using more memory during the sleep mode . wahahahahha |

iYah... simple...
1) If it's for a short period of time, just put it to sleep. 2) If you're travelling or leaving the MB idle for long period of time, then shut it down. It doesn't take that long to reboot anyways - at max, 30 secs? |

I'm using a PowerBook G4 and I always on sleep mode inregardless how long it is. Sometimes I just run the PowerBook 24/7 (sleep mode at night) for weeks only to restart when there is a security update or software installation (well, I like to try all those freewares)

it's always good to have a notebook cooler and it's very cheap nowadays. My MB runs at 60 degree C, PC at 40 and windows notebook at 56. All this with the cooling mechanism. A little bit better with air cond.

Just install the smCFan Control or one of those programs. My MBP's temperature is usually below 50 Celcius.

ok i practiced this when I still have my PB...
If i'm going to use my PB in the next 24hr, keep it sleep. If i'm not going to use it more than 24hr, shut it down. If i'm not going to use it more than 5days, makesure the battery have 50% charge, shutdown the PB, remove the battery, keep it somewhere dry n not too hot. I've travel to lot of places with the PB is sleeping in the bag. lol... it even went over the xray scanner. |

@wei,
That's pretty sound advise but i wouldn't advise travelling and carrying the MB in sleep mode - sometimes it's better to be safe than sorry *grins*. I usually have mine switched on as I work from it and if I'm leaving the office straight for home then I usually keep it on sleep mode, otherwise I shut it off and vice versa. If I'm going for a meeting and know I won't be utilising the notebook then I'll shut it off - just in case The boot up time on my MBP's less than 20 secs so i can live with having to wait a lil while @kevler, About 70:30, mostly in an airconditioned environment. Or, perhaps when it's really hot or when the temperature's soared, I don't realise it because I ain't checking it *g* |

So, what if I want it to continue downloading torrents while i;m at sleep? should i close the lid?
another case, since i don't want the battery to overcharge, in such case that i want to leave it to dl torrents overnite, should i remove the battery and let it run in live AC power? should it be a good idea to buy cooler? (after all the cooler derive electricity from the machine, end up draining more electricity, ie, the heat created by powering the cooler overcome by the cooling effect?) this is for the case of a new MB |

Also remember to not close the lid just after shtudown. Yr lcd panel will be exposed to the heat generated from yr laptop n will dmg the lcd in the long run.

@alextakashi,
Your screen will go to sleep automatically so u don't have to worry about the room being too brightly lit when your MB is running while you're sleeping - that is unless of course you switch the default off... by default your screen will go to 'bed' too |

From personal experience, this is not true. I have laptops from 1999 (Compaq Armada) and 2001 (iBook G3) which have not had any problems with the LCD or backlight.The battery is affected far more by heat than the LCD. |
