I use Boost the most, because it has the most amount of accepted merchants, and also it's providing more localized services like bill and parking payments thanks to the fact that it's our homegrown e wallet.

Others would be Favepay (although it's not technically an e wallet) and also Wechat Pay.

Also a correction, Samsung Pay / Paypal / Big Pay / Mpay are not e wallets, more like mobile payments, and Alipay is not available to use by the locals here.

Damn, Celcom is so RICH~~~ if compared with HLB/Wechat  sweat.gif

It's Axiata, to be specific. Celcom is just one of their telco service, along with few telcos in few countries of Asia. Don't forget that MVNO telcos like RedOne and Yoodo are riding on their newtork as well.

They probably earning way more than we think lol.

too many app but not one superior one....... difficult to load everyone into phone, and also load money into everyone
*
Use the major ones like Boost and Favepay, smaller ones are probably destined to fail due to the small budget in penetrating the market.

QUOTE(David83 @ Aug 25 2018, 07:26 PM)
The TnG card is a dinosaur technology which the card balance needs to update manually.
This can be seen in auto-reload on Zing card.

The TnG physical card balance in the TnG App can only be reflected with the latest balance within 48 hours of the last transaction.

Full integration is complex for TnG physical but RFID will be more promising!
*
I've noticed that TnG app will update the card balance every few hours (probably 4-5 hours) which is still slow and unpractical. Unlike other countries like Suica in Japan, the balance update is instant. The 48 hours thing is for toll usage if I'm not wrong.

RFID is not that useful, especially for those who don't drive cars and rely on public transports. So TnG still gotta improve on the linking feature between the card and app, and also implement the QR code payment system to more LRT stations and also MRT and buses ASAP.

RFID might only useful for motor users, but what's if hybrid e-wallet with NFC phones?
For ideas, just wave phone to buy goodies, passing thru LRT/MRT/KTM without beratur?
*
It's obvious that TnG is setting their future path on QR code tech instead of NFC, doubt they will fork out another budget to implement NFC tech even though it's a great idea.

Many suggested them to implement NFC tech for linking card to the app, but they said NFC tech is inclusive and not every phones have NFC. Oh well...

Again, I wouldn't expect much on TnG.

True, mostly Malaysian phones don't have NFC, this depend distributors wanna import or not...
Maybe few years later after Samsung Pay and other NFC payment success, then...  tongue.gif  tongue.gif

I don't think NFC is gonna take off here. First of all, many don't even know what is NFC, even when some of them have NFC on their phones. Secondly, there's no one to give it a headstart and retain a smooth process, Maybank and CIMB tried to do it but both failed badly.

NFC payment is gonna remain exclusive to only Samsung Pay, unless there are any local companies who would like to do it or when Google and Apple decide to launch their payment services here but doubt it's gonna happen even in the future.

Umobile launching e-wallet today

Look like similar to BigPay....
More info soyacincau Twitter

Having Unionpay and JCB as options are tempting though, I would probably ditch Bigpay because of this.

This is what im worried abt.... is it really safe to use ewallet. I'm maybe paranoid, but i rather stay safe.
The apps also alot but u have to use different wallet for different merchant. Isnt it the same just using cc?. Thats abit discouraging.
*
QUOTE(the7signals @ Jun 18 2019, 05:39 PM)
I think e-wallet and cc is a bit different. For cc, visa or mc, irregardless from which bank, as long as merchant accept visa/mc, it can be used in any merchants.

However for e-wallets, some merchant accept boost, some accept touch n go, etc, so one will need to sign up to a few e-wallets.
*
QUOTE(the7signals @ Jun 18 2019, 05:42 PM)
I wonder how safe is their server? I am a bit worried on this.
*
The only e wallets that you should have in your phone are Boost, Grabpay, TnG and Favepay...because they have a huge merchant base, and will be growing from time to time, don't forget that these are also the e wallets that provide decent rewards (TnG is seasonal though)...

Having these 4 e wallets are already enough (not saying that you should use all 4 of them but only consider these 4 if you wanna join the e wallet community), cuz you can use whichever that you wanna use during certain times and many merchants nowadays accept more than one e wallet (usually these 4), and when one is down, you have another one as backup.

The whole purpose for e wallets is for convenience and paying by just using your phone, and also getting rewards by making payments sometimes. Yes, our e wallets have a long way to go to be up to par with what China has, but it wouldn't hurt to give it a try and embrace the cashless society for the future.

E wallets here are all following regulations under BNM, so there's no need to worry about their server. If people are worried about e wallets, then why do people still use banking apps, how do you know it's completely safe? Just because it's a bank, but then you get CIMB with their occasional data leak and stuff, but people are still using it anyways. If you say banking apps are safer cuz they follow regulations under BNM, then it's the same thing with e wallers as well.

Please refer to the below of why am I having so many eWallet.

I wouldn't consider myself as professional lol, I'm just a fan of e wallets and mobile payments, and just saying what I've observed so far from using e wallets for like more than a year...

It's true that we have too many e wallets, no one would like to clutter their phones with e wallets and top up each and every one of them, that's why it's best to have not more than 4...

And the 4 are the ones that I've mentioned (Sarawak is probably different because they have SarawakPay), cuz those are the only decent ones so far.

QUOTE(ClarenceT @ Jun 19 2019, 08:18 AM)
For users staying in Sarawak, + SarawakPay but -TnG.
BTW Favepay is not really an e-wallet.
*
How is SarawakPay's merchant base in Sarawak so far? Saw KK Mart in KL accepts SarawakPay as well.

Yeah, Favepay is not an e wallet, but they're like mixing themselves among the bunch, which people at first would thought that it's really an e wallet, but logically it's not.

Expanding but not as popular as Boost. SarawakPay is a copycat.
It is backed and managed by Sarawak Government, so we use it to pay all the state government related bills and utilities. But now they move into retail stores.

Now Banks are removing rewards and rebates, and Boost is cutting down the rebates as well, then SarawakPay can be attractive now.

You will know why KK Mart in KL is accepting Sarawakpay after reading this news...

It took Boost quite a while to get to their current stage, which I believe same can be applied to SarawakPay if they do it right.

They seem to have huge ambitions, and I have a feeling that they would wanna try to expand to West Malaysia soon.

Me too. Took me a while to register who was calling me. I had to ask 3 times before I remembered that I signed up. If their system not ready for public, then why bother doing a big launch event for? Waste the publicity and interest generated only...
*
Announcing it doesn't mean they should launch it immediately, it's just like announcing a new phone doesn't mean it should go on sale immediately either.

But it's great that they're not launching it immediately, they could still improve and change something, also survey on what the consumers think and want.

Also, since Visa, Mastercard and Unionpay is available at the start, they could also wait until when their JCB cards are ready as well, according to what they planned.

GoPayz?

What advantages does it have? If no clear advantages, there's no point.

Retailers and customers would mostly go for a few e-wallets, the most popular ones. Too many is not practical - just imagine a retailer's counter cluttered with QR code for too many e-wallets.
*
There's one huge advantage over Bigpay, lower withdrawal fee from ATM.

Also, people can choose which card scheme they want, Visa/Master/Unionpay they got everything covered, with JCB coming soon as well.

I'm gonna get either Unionpay or JCB when it launches.

And most important - how good is their rewards/cashback?

Not sure if we are on the same topic.  biggrin.gif

Because you're using a bank card and withdraw it from that bank?

I'm talking about Bigpay charging RM 6 for ATM withdrawal, whereas it's only RM 1 for Gopayz...

However other info about Gopayz is still scarce though.

Anyone received an email from Gopayz stating that they "closed the account and call back immediately for further assistance"?

UPDATE: The CS said that those who registered for the account earlier should reapply for a new account when it officially launches, however CS wasn't sure about the launch date but will be sometime this month.

Public Bank first to soft launch DuitNow QR in Malaysia

On 17 July 2019, Payments Network Malaysia Sdn Bhd (PayNet) held a soft launch of Malaysia’s National QR Standard, known as DuitNow QR, with Public Bank as the first bank adopting the standard.

DuitNow QR is established under Bank Negara Malaysia’s Interoperable Credit Transfer Framework (ICTF). ICTF mandates that PayNet, as the country’s shared payment infrastructure provider, implement an interoperable and common QR standard for Malaysia.

With the launch of DuitNow QR, Malaysia has a common QR standard which will work for customers of all participating banks and e-wallets.  DuitNow QR will foster an efficient, competitive and innovative payment landscape in Malaysia by enabling interoperability, promoting collaborative competition and providing fair and open access to the shared payment infrastructure.

Present at the soft launch were Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Tay Ah Lek, Chief Executive Officer of Public Bank, and Mr Peter Schiesser, Group Chief Executive Officer, PayNet.  Tan Sri Dato’ Tay Ah Lek performed the first DuitNow QR transaction using Public Bank’s PB engage mobile app at Pie Kingdom, a popular café in Bangsar South, which Public Bank has enrolled to accept DuitNow QR.

Through DuitNow QR, users can make payment from any participating Banks or e-Wallets mobile apps. Merchants would only need to display one QR Code, the DuitNow QR, to accept payments, as opposed to the current practice of displaying multiple proprietary QR codes at payment counters.

“We are delighted to be the first bank adopting DuitNow QR. With this soft launch, Public Bank will bring innovative payment solutions to our retail consumers and SME business clients. Driven by our new PB engage mobile banking app, we anticipate that the DuitNow QR will see strong take-up,” said Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Tay.

In addition to Public Bank, there are 33 banks that will be enabling DuitNow QR in their mobile banking apps. These banks will progressively go live over the next 12 months.  “We have also received applications from 12 licensed e-wallet providers and non-bank acquirers to participate in the DuitNow QR scheme and we expect to admit a number of those in the next 6 months,” said Mr Peter Schiesser.

“At the moment, we see a proliferation of QR codes from a multitude of e-wallets which is confusing for consumers. In addition, e-wallet providers are incurring substantial merchant acquiring costs because they are each signing up the same set of merchants for their respective proprietary networks. With DuitNow QR, a merchant needs to sign up with only one bank or e-wallet acquirer, and customers of all participating banks and e-wallets would be able to make DuitNow QR payments to the merchant using their respective mobile apps,” added Mr Schiesser.

DuitNow QR is an extension of the DuitNow service launched in December 2018, which allows Bank customers to transfer money instantly and securely on a 24/7 basis at Banks’ Internet or Mobile Banking channels.  DuitNow fund transfers can be directed using the recipients’ mobile numbers, MyKad or business registration numbers. The introduction of DuitNow QR extends DuitNow to allow fund transfers to merchants, directed using the merchants’ DuitNow QR codes.

Yes, but Paynet is kinda slow in releasing such information.

Hope we can see only one QR code sign that supports various e wallets at counters very soon...

I think this will attract more smaller merchants like hawker stalls and shops to accept e wallets as well, so the stall / counter won't be a mess and flooded with tons of QR codes.
