Since nowadays, the price of notebook hard disk (HDD) is getting cheaper and the price is even nearest to USB Thumbdrive, a lot of peoples had bought or planing to get a 2.5" notebook HDD+ext casing to used as removable storage device, I had searched through all the other thread, seem like there is no one discuss about it yet , so i just open a thread for discussion, hopefully those user who planing to get / or already got can give some feedback on it and take it as a references. Thanks.

For those who are going to get a new 2.5" HDD+external casing combo, here are some issues that we need to know before we get it:

1st issues to be considered --> Pricing
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

After we look at the pricing, we can easily categories three range of user, which are budget, mainstream and extreme.
Normally for the combination that they are going to take most likely will be:
QUOTE
Budget:
- 80GB+unbranded ext casing : RM160+RM15 = RM175
- 120GB+unbranded ext casing : RM175+RM15 = RM190
- 160GB+unbranded ext casing : RM210+RM15 = RM235

Mainstream:

- 120GB+unbranded ext casing : RM175+RM15 = RM190
- 120GB+RM40± ext casing : RM175+RM40 = RM215±

Extreme:
- 120GB+RM80± ext casing : RM175+RM80 = RM255±
- 160GB+RM80± ext casing : RM210+RM80 = RM290±

- 120GB (eSATA) +RM100± ext casing : RM175+RM100 = RM275±
- 160GB (eSATA) +RM100± ext casing : RM210+RM100 = RM310±

2nd issues to be considered --> Ext 2.5" HDD vs Thumbdrive
As most of us are aiming for portable storage, is it worth for our $$$ to self configure an external 2.5" HDD compare with just get a thumbdrive?
QUOTE
Pros:
- High capacity, minimum 80GB, whereas thumbdrive the largest size on market which is just only 8GB.
-- 80GB+unbranded ext casing : RM160+RM15 = RM175,  RM2.20 per gig
-- 120GB+unbranded ext casing : RM175+RM15 = RM190,  RM1.6 per gig
-- 8GB thumbdrive = RM100, RM12.5 per gig.
- High transfer rate for 2.5" HDD, esp for eSATA connection, 1.5 Gb/s to 3.0 Gb/s.
- Cool, especially you pair with a nice design full aluminum casing  drool.gif

Cons:
- 2.5" HDD is non-flash memory, meaning that it is still using spindle to read the disc, so it is highly sensitive and fragile, easy data loss, whereas for thumbdrive, it is more durable for normal user daily torture (throw here and there, some even drop it into washing machine and still survive.)
- Size of 2.5" HDD is bulky compare with thumbdrive (But this can prevent us to lost it / accidentally misplace it to wrong place)
- Need used up 2 USB port compare with thumbdrive only using one USB port.

Different user with different need will be easily categorized them either to get a thumbdrive or an external 2.5" HDD+casing. But for those who just so happened that they are going to get a portable storage device, they need to spent some time to crack their head to figure out which is more suitable to their current and future needs. rclxub.gif

3rd issues to be considered --> Brand/Quality
After getting know our budget and settle down our mind, now is time to chose the best combination for 2.5" HDD and a suitable external casing.

Here are some of the important point to think about it:
QUOTE
For 2.5" HDD:
Which brand is provide a longer warranty? (Manufacturer warranty or shop warranty only?)
How many rpm? 4200 or 5400?
Which brand/model is low power consume?
Which brand/model is less heat produce?
Which type of 2.5" HDD going to get? normal notebook HDD or SATA HDD?
Which brand/model of HDD is able to sustain the user "torture" e.g. extra vibration? water proof ? doh.gif

For external 2.5" HDD casing:
Which is capable to release the heat efficiently?
Which is capable to provide a fast Read/Write speed?
Which is build with good quality? durable? solid?
Which interface for output? USB? eSATA?
What kind of Chipset of external HDD casing is more stable on transferring data?
Which is provide more accessory in their package, e.g. pouch, external power cord/cable?
Which is the coolest and worth to get?
So now I need some HELP from:

1.Those who are going to get an external 2.5" HDD + casing:
- can you please share with us what combination(brand+model) are you going to get?
- reason?

2. Those who already got their 2.5" HDD + casing:
- Can you kindly please share with us the feedback of your combination? Recommendation?
- Can you attached a print screen of any benchmark result(e.g. si-soft sandra), so that we can compile a lists to get more information on which is better?
- Any photo?
- Where did you got it from? Price?

Thanks in advance.

PS¹:If anyone got any information to be shared with other, please let me know(PM/Reply), so that I can include it into this post.(will be given credit)
PS²:Kindly inform me on any typo/error information that I had include in this post.
PS³:Please don't quote this message/post when you intend to reply on this thread, you will regret, as the coding is damn messy, even me myself also need to spent a lot of time to make sure the coding will not going wrong when i edit anything. rclxub.gif

1) I use WD120G 2.5 PATA HDD, no need external power.
2) Speed? i choose PATA over SATA... Since USB2 only allow theoritically 480Mbits/s, useless to buy SATA over PATA
FYI: PATA 100 = 100Mbytes/s while SATA 150 = 150MBytes/s, USB cannnot support these high speed transfer, USB actually limited to average 380Mbits/s
FYI: SATA case RM30 more, HDD price on both sata and pata same
FYI: Buy SATA IF u have a laptop and thinking to replace your laptop HDD in the future... Just my 2 cents...
3) U can buy WD (quiet but only 1 year warranty) or buy Seagate ( a bit noisy and 5 years warranty, normally RM20 more)

Well for me myself, my current plan is to get the combination of:

WD 80GB SATA + Cooler Master RX250ST (eSATA)

Reason:
1. Due to my daily job, I need to transfer quite a lot of Video/data, so getting a faster transfer speed (eSATA) will be better. Initially was planing to get IEE1394, but since now the package of RX250ST come with an eSATA PCI bracket, I might mod it to my casing front panel for easy access. rolleyes.gif

2. SATA 2.5" HDD can be used for me in future if I want to assembly it into any system (SATA compatible with desktop motherboard), getting a 2.5" IDE will limit me to use only for portable usage sad.gif

3.BUT IT IS HARD FOR ME TO SEARCH AT MY NEARBY PC SHOP, THEY DUN HAVE STOCK sweat.gif

Maybe end up, will getting WD 80GB IDE + Vantec NST260U2, due to the stock availability. sad.gif

----------------------------
Any user using Vantec NST260U2/SU or Cooler Master RX250ST? Need some feedback on it.

By the way, is it most of the shop that selling Notebook HDD, the warranty is how long? Because i had ask a few shop, they only provide 1 year warranty, and IT IS NOT MANUFACTURER WARRANTY, which mean anything go wrong, direct deal with the shop, i was wondering the source of the stock is legitimate or not. I though for desktop HDD, we can direct claim from manufacturer, notebook HDD is different case?

I read accross the post,
and wondering the meaning of "2.5" HDD.
Can any one tell me what does it stand for?
Because i saw "3.5" HDD before in some other place.

QUOTE(Kagaya @ May 27 2007, 12:55 AM)
If it's a 3.5" type, the HDD won't suffer from physical damage like a momentary stop because it's still feeding from another PSU supply.

For 2.5" HDD, it'll just stop but think again, even if you have clicked 'Eject' for the removable device, have the disc stop moving? NO! It's still feeding from the 5V off the USB power, so the damage is still there.

Well, one of my friend brought a HDD last year, and i saw his HDD casing using up to two USB port.
is there any problem using more then one USB port?

abt the performence,
can anyone tell me which of those brand is better?

well, after all,
i'm planning to get one HDD for transferring Movie from my frined comp to mine and back up some important file, or even setup,
can anyone suggest me a combination?
my planning is to get up to 160GB HDD.

Thanks in advance.

Those 2.5" and 3.5" is their size. 2.5" means 2.5 inch. 2.5" HDD is meant for Laptop usage while the 3.5" is meant for desktop. Of course, you could always add an external casing and then, it becomes external drive..lol...

Why Seagate?Just because the price of a 100gb and 120gb only differs a little bit and Seagate is offering 5 years warranty for maybe around RM10-20 more expensive in price.

About the enclosure, i just wanted to get a better enclosure. Something trustworthy. Dont feel wana get those chaplang brand..

May I know where did you saw 250GB 2.5" HDD in MALAYSIA ?

So far from a quick search from internet, the 250GB 2.5" HDD is just come out recently:

Same with me, from CM website, Xcraft Sata Enclosure come with the PCI eSATA connector, good for those board that don't have eSATA build in. But i wonder where can we get ...

Compare with those OEM/unbranded casing, kind of afraid that it will spoilt the 2.5" HDD, spent RM15, end up spoilt the 200+ buck HDD ... not worth ...

By the way, the 5 year warranty of 2.5" HDD is for all seagate model, rite? I having a doubt as some of the shop that I ask, they just provide 1 year warranty, plus only can be claim from the shop, make me wonder the stock illegal source. Any one had met this problem also?

Depend on your budget, if you got unlimited budget, then better go for those ready make external HDD by those branded manufacturer, more reliable.

but for self configure, got several benefit, which is you can chose the casing that you like, and the capacity that suit you. And it is cheaper compare with those ready stock.

Can. but if you mean that can we plug the notebook HDD direct to our motherboard, then only limited to SATA HDD can, as the connector of notebook IDE HDD is totally not same with the one (PATA) that we used in our motherboard.

So if you plan to dual use, plug to motherboard + portable usage, then better suggest you to get SATA notebook HDD.

I am prefer HITACHI Travelstar 7K200 or E7K200
Since HITACHI is the HDD supplier for IBM Thinkpad, durability approach and minimise data loss due to damage. (However the warranty not as long as Seageta but I think data more important than warranty whistling.gif )

Usually how much the price for e-SATA enclosure? Any cheap brand other than coolermaster? My mobo has 2 e-Sata ports so I think better to make use of it.

Hi All,

I hope someone can help me out here. I'm trying to look for

Stysen E02 External casing for SATA or IDE 2.5 hard disk. Anyone know where I can buy this around Selangor or KL? Any shop in Low Yatt Plaza or Digital Mall?

Thanks in advance if anyone can help me.

been using 80 gb hitachi 2.5" and a vantec nexstar red. Used it for nearly 10 months and no problems. I read somewhere on a harddisk review site that hitachi 2.5" are the fastest 2.5", even nearing 7200 rpm-like speeds. That and the fact that its cheaper than seagate is why i bought it.

For the vantec nexstar, eventhough its made of aluminium and shiny, it doesnt scratch easily. In fact theres no visible scratches on mine. It even comes with a handy bag with zipper that covers the casing plus cables completely.

If only i had a camera....according to the new pczone(from pczone website) pdf pricelist the nexstar 2.5" usb is rm70. About the link in vixxiee's posts, the seller's price is quite low but the enclosure looks a bit strange - the edges(where the connectors are) looks like black plastic while AFAIK it is supposed to be shiny silvery metallic aluminium. Do ask the seller abt it 1st. U can find the pictures @ vantec usa website or in bulk orders, look for bombman thread.

yeah, i think i saw one yesterday during my day out at lowyat, the case is actually one sided sharp edges with matt finishes. Does this an imitation one? And i saw two types of pouch for vantec, for the matt finishes come along with full cover pouch but very thin whereas the one that supposed to be the real one is full cover pouch and it is with thick padding.... hmm.gif

i think the seller shld explain why his version of nexstar looks very diff from the nexstar that been sold for a few yrs now. theres no point to matt finish an aluminium enclosure since the shine is what attracts ppl to buy in 1st place.

ya, my nexstar's full cover pouch is thickly padded. i reckon it'll survive a fall of significant height.

btw, look here - http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=211655
Vantec has actually been rebranded to vizo. Vizo's Paragon/Saturno looks very nice, has 1 touch backup function, and also higher price.

got a good question to ask while here, well, my notebook is three years old lol and probably the hdd is a 4200rpm 2Mb cache 20 GB hdd. I am planning to hit on a wd/seagate 60GB, 5400rpm 8MB cache.. would the performance to start up apps be faster? hmm well i am not sure how to get my os running again if i install a new hdd? since acer doesnt sell a cd separately for his os.. its like its "embedded" or something.... thank you.. I know i should be asking this at hardware q and a but i believe i can get some answer here since its a relevant topic:)

Programs shld start faster due to the higher rpm and bigger cache. I think u shld aim higher capacity than 60gb, as prices have come down for 2.5" hdd, maybe 80 gb 0r 120gb.

Since theres no installation CD, u shld check @ the notebook manufacturer website for your notebook model and drivers. The drivers shld be there for u to download. Then youll only need a windows CD.

BTW, whats your notebook make/model?

Thank you for the help. It is a acer travelmate 250, its make i think 2003. Which is old. And at the moment i am going to go university, and i cant be bothered to get a new comp just yet, so i want to bring out the most i can from this notebook. I do have the driver cd and things like that but the annoying bit would be when i install the new hdd, i would probably need a new windows cd. So what should i do? In another perspective, getting a new comp looks tempting but the cost of getting that new comp is high, for the moment for me. So while saving up the money, i want to hold on and make the full use of this comp.

there are two things i want to do
1.hdd
2.ram

I'm not sure about this one though whether it is an imitation or just the lower end product of Vantec enclosure, since i found out the price from bulk is half the price of the mirror finish Vantec Nexstar 3.

But do e-SATA really practical, since accroding from my understanding, the external will be detecting from BIOS so u need to plug in before opening ur pc right? hmm.gif

From wat I know, eSATA is plug and play.
quoted from sata-io.org:
QUOTE
eSATA provides more performance than existing solutions and is hot pluggable.
Interesting finding:

From sata-io.org
QUOTE
To conclude, here are some actual measurements using a SATA 1.5Gbps drive and three different host bus interfaces. As you can see, there is dramatic improvement when the bus does not require a protocol overhead burden.

But from the other website benchmark:

http://www.tech-gear.org
Model:Vizo Saturno 2.5-inch One Touch Backup SATA Hard Drive Enclosure

The comparison between eSATA vs USB connection of 2.5" HDD casing

Kind of confuse on the read/write speed of eSATA and USB connection, anyone can explain, based on these two review, is there any improvement from eSATA compare with normal USB connection? seem like the average read/write speed of both is nearly same, just the burst rate is higher for eSATA.

I think most of external enclosure for SATA to USB and support e-SATA will provide an IDE e-SATA port for pc. I'm currently got my 2.5" Vantec Nexstar 3 SATA to USB and support e-SATA, the package do include e-SATA cable and IDE e-SATA.

But, haven't tested the thing yet, hopefully will show good result... nod.gif

i got it from moderno shop in garage sales, since it is very hard indeed to get a 2.5" sata enclosure at Lowyat since shop owner don't tend to take it because the price is slightly higher from normal IDE enclosure....

still haven't test it yet, mind telling any benchmark software for harddisk?

p/s: oh, sorry, forgot to mention, it cost RM105 only... nod.gif

I'm not sure whether the surface is easy to scratch or not, but i think with pouch, it's quite protective...i'm pairing it with 40GB 2.5" Fujitsu HDD(bought from garage sales)

p/s: if you can wait, maybe until Xcraft 2.5" SATA enclosure make way to local market.... nod.gif

Now i am using the Western Digital 160GB Passport V2 External USB 2.0 2.5" Hard Drive.

Not bad i might say, its almost virtually silent and quite nice in terms of built quality and design. quite rugged for daily use if you travel a lot.

The top surface is reflective glossy black colour and gets smudge with finger prints easily, but after attaching a screen protector for the top surface its always shiny and smudge free now.

Previously using a 3.5" 200gb hdd with an external sarotech casing from wd also but quite bulky i find it and also needs external a/c power.

A bit pricey but if its fuss free off the shelve purchase you want then i suggest you buy this from WD, thats what make me made up my mind when i saw it at an IT store.

Thanks for everyone that answer my question.

Can anyone tell me what is the one touch button to backup feature for? Cause i saw some exclosure stated that it has this feature.

I'm guessing it's installing a software and click on the folders that needs to backup, after that, just click on the button and it will always backup those folders.. am I right??

they are only selling the 160GB for promo price. for other sizes, it's much more expensive.. check pczone pricelist.

One of the example for the one click backup software which bundle with 2.5" ext HDD casing --> PCClone Ex Lite program

LACIE products are available here in Malaysia but they are priced too expensive. Getting it from Spore will be a very good alternative as the price there is almost half of what offered here in Malaysia..

I had spent some time go through NewEgg to see the so called bad review regard on eSATA architecture that the eSATA speed is slower, but unfortunately i still can't see any solid proof to show it that the eSATA architecture got problem, can you please let me know or show any proof to let us know what kind of architecture problem u wanted to highlighted?

Any solid proof? by checking my previous few msg, i had posted the official figure from http://www.sata-io.org, and it shown that by theory that the speed of eSATA is faster then USB, and I had post one of the review site benchmark result, it shown that the speed of eSATA is faster then USB. So based on you statement, does it mean that the two site that i search through is bluffing us and try to cheat us user? Are you sure on what are you talking about?or you are just simply make the statement without any proof? rclxub.gif

from what i had read, there are several issues with eSATA which are incompatibility of SATA chipset, some older SATA chipset are not supported eSATA feature; incompatible HDD issues, e.g. rpm, brand, high capacity, brand, etc. But all of these issues are understandable, as eSATA is quite new along the evolution of SATA technology, definately some older chipset is not supported. And this is the main reason that i create this thread to let user who got/going to get their ext HDD casing to share what kind of information they got, so that we can avoid the problem.

was using 2.5" seagate 100GB pata + digimate otg, never encounter any breakdown.

think of getting a 2.5" sata, if using 2.5" portable via firewire, do i need additional power source or firewire itself could drive it? how fast is a firewire vs usb 2.0, worth to get it? which 2.5" sata casing with firewire would u recommend? thks~

read all the 4 pages, no review or personal xperience that the el-cheapo enclosure contributed to disk problem or any other problem ...

bringing up this good thread hoping that somebody (I'm sure many) with el cheapo casing to give some review..... thinking of getting those cheap casing if no problem reported, since the casing will be inside those leather pouch, defying the need for a good looking/colourful almunium casing...

grab either one it is good enough, WD come with 3 year warranty(if i'm not mistaken) and Seagate with 5 years. Just get an IDE is good enough since SATA will no give a lot of differences in performance because in the end, it will only limit by USB speed except if u got a casing that support e-SATA...

this just a recommendation, u can get either Cooler Master Xcraft Enclosure 2.5" or maybe Vantec Nexstar 2.5" (both of this come with pouch/wallet) or any cheap enclosure will do if your budget is limited.. nod.gif

ok, e-sata is actually allow you for removable connection but with the speed of sata, but no, you cannot plug an e-sata to your mobo sata port because e-sata is a different port from the existing sata port(additional port)

usually, when u bought a sata hdd and got an enclosure that support e-sata, the e-sata port will be coming along with the package... nod.gif

p/s: maybe others can add more on e-sata.... notworthy.gif

huh u said esata enclosure comes together with the port .... so we can insert to your pc....
but the other guy mentioned esata enclosure hav to buy, then hav to buy another esata port @@
if esata enclosure+esata port is around rm100 more less, then i think can buy loh since the SATA speed much more than IDE  doh.gif
*
no la bro, i mention that, if u buy an e-sata enclosure usually it will come along with e-sata port to plug on your mobo....for mine, vantec provide the e-sata port along with their enclosure... nod.gif

since i use it for mobile.. and not every pc got esata.. mostly usb..
so i decided to choose IDE..
becoz
1-IDE HDD cheaper
2-IDE casing cheaper
3-USB transfer rate no different between sata n IDE
4-u got a great deal on sales thread...

the e-sata port if plug on your mobo, issit shown outside ur casing like USB port ?

but if its inside cpu, then no difference between ESATA and SATA ?

cos with SATA 2.5" HDD, u can juz buy SATA cable and plug into SATA port then can get the speed alreadi ...
dont need esata also ...

correct me if i wrong rclxub.gif

The enclosure realy cool !! comes with almost everything ... how much is it ??

* Aluminum casing - assists in cooling your hard drive
* Transfer rates up to 3Gbps with eSATA connection
* Transfer rates up to 480Mbps with USB 2.0 (12Mbps with USB 1.1)
* Easily add storage to any system with USB
* Hot swappable - plug & play without rebooting Windows
* Attractive blue LED indicates power and hard disk activity
* Currently support up to 160GB hard drives

esata = 3Gbps ??? so fast meh

as i know, sata2 only 350mbps .... quite blur lol

if 3GBps, that mean 3000mbps ??

sry still new in this thingie

wd 60gb 8mb ide + 2.5" tomata casing = rm 178 pcfair price last month.
warantty : hd 5 years, casing 3 month
wd have 2 model 2mb & 8mb. make sure get corect model. Mine is WD600VE. WD give 3 years warranty.

Main used : cybercafe. dont have screamyx @ home.
- no benchmark no picture. i can say take about 10 second (more or less) copy 700mb linux iso.
- run directly opera, firefox portable, eudora, forte agent, greatnews rss reader, filezilla, flashget all in the same time from portable hard disk.

problem : some pc have detect problem. detect but with warning or not detect al all.
*
Today I just got myself a Seagate 120GB SATA with Digiboy (LOL) casing for RM295. I also have this detection problem. Anyone else face it? When plugged into a PC, one of 3 scenarios: detects OK, detect with warning (unrecognised USB, etc) or no detection at all (nothing happens). Is it the casing connection problem? I'm thinking of returning the casing and upgrading to a better one... any good, cheap, reliable casing to recommend?

Those are called multimedia casings or something. Just ask at PC shops and they'll know. The best known one is from Sarotech, RM400+, can play DivX AVI MPG bla bla files off your 2.5" disk, supports subtitles SRT SUB bla bla, has remote control, etc. The cheapest non-branded one is almost RM200 with no subtitle support, FAT32-only, etc.

Ok problem solved. The issue was with the cheap casing/cable. The shop exchanged cable and casing with me, but the problem still occurred. At their PC, it works. At my PCs, it sometimes works, sometimes not. Experimented around with other cables (fatter ones) and my colleague's casing (Zynet), works. So went ahead and bought a decent Zynet casing from another shop, works great now.

Conclusion: cheap casing may or may not work. The price difference is more than for looks: it's for connectivity options, protection and chipset. Avoid Digiboy brand.

EDIT: Zynet casing link. Satisfied with it.

2. Those who already got their 2.5" HDD + casing:
-Can you kindly please share with us the feedback of your combination? Recommendation?
-Can you attached a print screen of any benchmark result(e.g. si-soft sandra), so that we can compile a lists to get more information on which is better?
- Any photo?
- Where did you got it from? Price?

1) Bought 120 GB SeaGate HDD + Vantec NexStar3 enclosure, last Friday.

The HDD is working fine and quiet.

For Vantec enclosure:

Pro:
-The enclosure is black in color with silver lining, which give a metalic feel when you touch it. rclxms.gif
-The bag that comes together with the enclosure is very neat as you can put everything include cables and the screw driver inside.
- I can't feel any heat by touching the enclosure, even if I connect it to PC for 2 hours ++.

Con:
- The size of the enclosure is slightly bigger than those OEM enclosure.
- Have 2 USB cables. 1 is to provide connection among PC and the enclosure. Another 1 is to provide extra power if needed.
- Fingerprint can be seen clearly on the casing. shakehead.gif

2) No benchmark result.

3) No photo. Search "Vantec" in trade zone.

4) Low Yat Plaza, ViewNet.
RM 249 - 120GB 2.5" SeaGate HDD
RM 56 - Vantec NexStar3 2.5" IDE enclosure
Total = RM 305

My advice is to get a branded enclosure, if you do not want to "fry" you hdd due to OEM enclosure. Knowing that your data is stored in the HDD safely, is definitely worth the 20 bucks extra. wink.gif

I have no other enclosure except this 1.
I posted the pic of the bundle and how it looks like in the BUY CLUB.
I'm using a samsung 160gb inside it, been on 24/7 for 1 week and I don't feel anything, not hot at all !!
It do look very solid, but it's abit shaky when you touch it, but it's very safe tho...you will understand what i'm saying if you get 1 of these.
I gt it for RM40 at thundermatch.

my problem with nexstar 3 2.5" (non-lite)is the quality of the usb socket. its not stable...would disconnect and reconnect when moved with the original cable. Now, im using usb cable from my pda(hp ipaq rx4540) and theres some improvement but still sometimes it gets disconnected.

Currently, there sumthin not right. The hitachi 2.5" starts a tek tek tek noise everytime i connect it. After few connects only does it detected and open.

learned my lesson, never never buy cheapo enclosure

i had problem transferring large files when i was using hitachi 60gb + avf enclosure, i will have writing delay if i copy files to the hdd, and will fail when copy out from the hdd, it only occur when the file size is huge, example 6gb
but the weird part is, only my pc will have this problem, i took the hdd to my friend's house to "steal" some files, i went 2 friends' house, both of their pc also nv give me any trouble, only my own blardy pc got that stupid prob

and now i end up buying another better enclosure, which is cooler master Xcraft, at last, my problem is solved doh.gif

yeah, why not, you can put the 2.5" harddisk in your laptop but do mind that SATA can only compatible with sata port in your laptop and IDE for IDE port in your laptop, and IDE is the port for PATA hdd...

the differences between the HDD just the brand and the warranty period, but for brand is more like one own preferences...do others add for more info...hope this help.. nod.gif

Seagate give 5 years warranty (Maxtor same, acquired by Seagate) where else WD just 3 only.

WD Passport look nicer (glossy plastic like Sony PSP) but you need to get a HD leather case (bag) for it OR you will scratch it.

Seagate Freeagent (and Maxtor One Touch 4 Mini) made by rugged plastic (plastic plus aluminum for Maxtor) which you don't need HD leather case (bag).

Guys,

Not sure where to ask this but this seems like a place to start. I am kinda interested in products like the Vantec EZ Swap and Tagan ICY Box as they are really good for portable users.

I for one, have a laptop and a Desktop PC and products like these are really good to take portable 2.5" HDD around.

My question is, besides this 2, anyone seen any similar products around? Something with nicer and better design perhaps? I only seen Silverstone one before but its not really pratical for my case as the A10 have a front panel.

Just want to help a bit with this scenario. Some USB enclosure requires the USB2.0 standard to be followed strictly. The standard calls for USB5V at a maximum current load draw of 100mA during USB detection/enumeration and up to 500mA post detection/enumeration or normal operation for bus-powered (no external adapter) devices. Some enclosure uses some unknown brand PATA/SATA to USB2.0 bridge hub IC which does not conform to these specifications during enumeration so detection is always a hit and miss thing. Also the PCB board design implementation is not optimized and could have draw a higher load current during start up. This answers why a good quality enclosure is essential. I had a cheapo enclosure damage my 2.5" HDD because of this. The filtering caps implementation was not good enough and caused power issues.

Another reason why a good quality enclosure is required is because of data integrity. Some IC's data handling may not be as good as the others. For example, when you click the 'safely remove hardware' icon, the IC might not flush the HDD buffer in time and park the head to its parking bay before you detach the USB cable. This could result in data lost the next time you plug it in again.

Then there's the issue of power. Although it is a 2.5" notebook drive which relies only USB 5V as power source. Some enclosure requires a Y-USB cable to utilized. Make use of this and plug both into the PC, preferably to the rear of the casing. This is because not all PC desktop or notebook's front or hub ports are independently powered and may not supply enough current. Most only conform to the minimum spec of 100mA per port for bus-powered devices.

Also, some of us might accidentally select an option in the device manager to 'optimize for performance' rather than the default of 'optimize for quick removal'. Selecting anything other than the latter will result the buffer to be used and when power is lost or when the HDD is unplugged from the PC, the buffer's content may not be flushed into the HDD in time and causing data lost again.

It should be fine.
For me, I had setup a NAS aka media file server for 1 of my external case. Watch movie from it..so far no problem.
I also listen to some songs when at work from my WD 160 passport...also no problem. 2.5" normally run much cooler compare to 3.5"

Another question.. if there's a switch (on/off) on my external hdd casing, should I off it first before I remove the usb cable or it doesn't matter?

For me, it doesn't really matter. Used the Vantec external casing before that comes with the ON/OFF button but doesn't seem to be any problem as well...

Well, for piece of mind, maybe you can just turn it off first before unplugging though..LOL..

Might be due to some virus or corrupted files. I got that problem as well last time. You will need to reformat the HDD itself to solve this problem. smile.gif

imma getting a RM200 2.5" 120gb seagaqte plus external enclosure at tight budget.

The cheapest I saw for seagate 120gb is rm170 at thundermatch, while still undecided on the enclosure. The Vantec Nexstar Lite is RM44 from moderno and I think at LYP should be cheaper.

Any recommendations for RM30++ enclosure? Maybe can tell me where can get Nexstar Lite for cheap at LYP? Or even a quality RM30 enclosure u have used before?

Thanks.

Umm I want to ask, how do you know which 2.5" hdd's are power hungry or not? I currently have a 120GB 2.5" external hdd (can't remember which brand though, 1 year adi) which I can only use the Y cable which takes up 2 usb ports cause my computer can't detect it if I use only 1 usb cable. Any ways to solve the problem?

when i use it with Y USB cable + eSATA, it seems not enough power, coz the window only detect 1 partition (got 2 partition inside) and it is not usable (can see but canot use)

but when i use the Y USB + USB data transfer it seems ok, but after transfering file for around 8mins the window show me "file transfer failed".....

May i know why this problem occur, izzit the HDD or the casing too power hungry?

I am using Vantec NexStar 3.5" for external..
it's because last time take to claim then no HDD and buy one extra.. so this put external.

If 2.5" i think i will go for coolermaster + seagate 2.5"
Because maxtor fail me many time and WD not dare to try.

P.s Coolermaster lover here tongue.gif

Is there anyone here using hot swappable enclosure such as the Vantec MRK-250ST.

When I try to slot in the hdd after the XP runs, it won't detect by itself and I have to manually scan for hardware changes in device manager only can detect the drive. Is this normal?

And is it safe to remove the drive by just eject it since there isn't any safely removal options for it.

My mobo chipset is ICH8

I had this problem too with my external HDD, insufficient power. It differs from pc to pc and laptop to laptop. Sometimes I need to use only one usb and at times I have to use 2. I think not all usb provides the same power and depends on the machine too.

So far only my ismart 160G 2.5' needs only one usb. I tried it with many machines. My Samsung 160G 2.5' and Seagate 2.5', sometimes 1 sometimes 2. I thought maybe ismart is better so I got myself another ismart 160G 2.5' recently but this new model is unlike my 1st ismart. It still needs 2 USB for some machines.

It's rather inconvenient for me to use 2 USB. I have only 3. One for mouse and if I use 2 for ext HDD I have no USB left for pendrive or printer. So, what I do now, if there's not enough power I plug in an external battery pack at the other USB for extra power supply. It works for me so far. I tried a few other methods (including USB charger adaptor - don't know what u call that thing) and I think this is still the easiest.

I'll try and get a new enclosure. Maybe my cheapo enclosure is the problem. My ext HDD slows down dramatically when I plug in a pendrive.
