Umm I want to ask, how do you know which 2.5" hdd's are power hungry or not? I currently have a 120GB 2.5" external hdd (can't remember which brand though, 1 year adi) which I can only use the Y cable which takes up 2 usb ports cause my computer can't detect it if I use only 1 usb cable. Any ways to solve the problem?

i meet some problem with my seagate 160GB + CM Xcraft250L USB+eSATA
when i use it with Y USB cable + eSATA, it seems not enough power, coz the window only detect 1 partition (got 2 partition inside) and it is not usable (can see but canot use)
but when i use the Y USB + USB data transfer it seems ok, but after transfering file for around 8mins the window show me "file transfer failed".....
May i know why this problem occur, izzit the HDD or the casing too power hungry? anyway to solve it?

I am using Vantec NexStar 3.5" for external.. it's because last time take to claim then no HDD and buy one extra.. so this put external. If 2.5" i think i will go for coolermaster + seagate 2.5" Because maxtor fail me many time and WD not dare to try. P.s Coolermaster lover here

Is there anyone here using hot swappable enclosure such as the Vantec MRK-250ST.
When I try to slot in the hdd after the XP runs, it won't detect by itself and I have to manually scan for hardware changes in device manager only can detect the drive. Is this normal?
And is it safe to remove the drive by just eject it since there isn't any safely removal options for it.
My mobo chipset is ICH8

I had this problem too with my external HDD, insufficient power. It differs from pc to pc and laptop to laptop. Sometimes I need to use only one usb and at times I have to use 2. I think not all usb provides the same power and depends on the machine too.
So far only my ismart 160G 2.5' needs only one usb. I tried it with many machines. My Samsung 160G 2.5' and Seagate 2.5', sometimes 1 sometimes 2. I thought maybe ismart is better so I got myself another ismart 160G 2.5' recently but this new model is unlike my 1st ismart. It still needs 2 USB for some machines.
It's rather inconvenient for me to use 2 USB. I have only 3. One for mouse and if I use 2 for ext HDD I have no USB left for pendrive or printer. So, what I do now, if there's not enough power I plug in an external battery pack at the other USB for extra power supply. It works for me so far. I tried a few other methods (including USB charger adaptor - don't know what u call that thing) and I think this is still the easiest.
I'll try and get a new enclosure. Maybe my cheapo enclosure is the problem. My ext HDD slows down dramatically when I plug in a pendrive.
