Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 vs 660 Comparison: How Different Are They?
If you look at the popular mid-range smartphones, you'd see a bulk of them powered by Qualcomm's 600-series processors. The popularity of the 600-series can be attributed to the fact that they bring superior experience to mobile phones (and hence, for the users).[/size][/B]
While the Snapdragon 625, 630 and 626 are some of the most popular processors, 2017 saw two new additions to the family — the Snapdragon 660 and 636 mobile platform.
Seen in the Nokia 7 plus and Redmi Note 5 Pro, these two platforms are now considered the most powerful chipsets in the 600-series. Needless to say, they provide a major boost to performance, gaming, and battery life.
For those who are unaware, the Snapdragon 636 replaces the highly popular Snapdragon 630, while the Snapdragon 660 is the substitute for the Snapdragon 653.
So, are these just incremental updates that Qualcomm has pushed out, or is there more to them than it meets the eye? Well, let's find out!
SPECIFICATIONS THAT MATTER
Property Snapdragon 636 Snapdragon 660 Manufacturing Process 14-nm 14-nm Architecture 64-bit 64-bit CPU 8x Kryo 260 CPU up to 1.8 GHz 8x Kryo 260 CPU up to 2.2 GHz GPU Adreno 509 Adreno 512 (Vulkan API) RAM Dual Channel LPDDR4/4x 1333 MHz Dual Channel LPDDR4/4x 1866 MHz Display Support Up to FHD+ (18:9) Up to QHD and WQXGA Camera Dual Qualcomm Spectra 160 ISP up to 24MP and 16MP Dual Qualcomm Spectra 160 ISP up to 24MP and 16MP Video Capture and Playback Up to 4K UHD video capture @ 30FPS & 4K Ultra HD video playback Up to 4K UHD video capture @ 30FPS & 4K Ultra HD video playback Charging Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.0 Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.0 Security Qualcomm Processor Security, Application Security, Smart Camera Hardware Token, Qualcomm Processor Security, Application Security, Smart Camera
PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENTS
The Snapdragon 660 is the highest performing SOC in Qualcomm's mid-tier range as of now and one of the key areas of improvement is the fabrication process.
While the old Snapdragon 653 was developed using the 28nm fabrication process, Qualcomm has bumped up the Snapdragon 660 with the 14nm LPP FinFET process from Samsung. What makes the 14nm fabrication process unique is the improvement in the field of energy efficiency, heat control, and the overall performance.
Another highlight is the introduction of the Kryo 260 cores, thus giving an additional boost to the CPU power. In fact, the Snapdragon 660 is the first chipset with Kryo cores, thus making it a bit expensive. The Kryo 260 uses a combination of four 64-bit ARM semi-custom Cortex-A73 'performance' cores clocked at 2.2GHz and four Cortex-A53 'efficiency' cores clocked at 1.7GHz.
This cluster of cores offers low latency and improved task-sharing capacities. When it comes to the GPU, the Snapdragon 660 houses an Adreno 512 GPU. This brings the gaming advantage to the Snapdragon 660 as it supports some of the latest graphics APIs such as the Vulkan API.
The Snapdragon 636 share almost same specifications as the Snapdragon 660, including the 14-nm fabrication process and Kryo 260 cores. However, what stands out is the clock speed and the GPU.
Instead of being clocked at 2.2 GHz, the Snapdragon 636 runs at 1.8Ghz. Plus, with the upgrade in the graphics department, the Snapdragon 660 is a gamer-friendly platform.
IMPROVEMENTS IN THE CAMERA FIELD
When it comes to the camera department, both mobile platforms sport almost similar features. Both the Snapdragon 636 and 660 come with Qualcomm Clear Sight camera features.
One of the major highlights of Clear Sight is the ability to capture more light in low-light areas, thus leading to noise reduction in photos. Apart from that, in keeping up with the dual camera trend, both the mobile platforms support optical zoom for cameras with different focal lengths, depth mapping for portrait mode, and EIS for videos.
DISPLAY RESOLUTION
The Snapdragon 660 is optimized for WQHD displays (2560x1600). On the contrary, the Snapdragon 636 can power displays up to 2220x1080.
If you look around, most of the mid-range phones now support displays up to FHD+, including the Nokia 7 plus.
CHARGING SPEED
On papers, with Quick Charge 4.0, you can get a whopping 5 hours of battery life in under 5 minutes while charging a 2750mAH battery unit. Given that most of the phone's batteries hover around the 2700mAh-3500mAh bracket, hopefully there won't be a significant leap in the charging time.
In reality, though, it remains to be seen whether OEMs will actually enable this feature. Currently, neither Redmi Note 5 Pro nor Nokia 7 plus supports Quick Charge. In fact, even the premium phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S8/S9 do not enable this feature.
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
Artificial Intelligence in phones is the talk of the town and thankfully, the Snapdragon 660 and 635 do not disappoint. Both the mobile platforms support Qualcomm's Neural Processing Engine (NPE) SDK.
This SDK works with some of the most popular AI frameworks such as Caffe/Caffe2, and Google’s TensorFlow.
In layman's terms, the inclusion of NPE means that app developers can tap into the API for developing AI-related apps. For instance, a camera app that uses image recognition to put funny filters.
SO, TO CONCLUDE
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 and 660 are similar in many respects, especially when it comes to camera specs and the charging technology. Performance wise, though they appear to be similar, the different clock frequencies and GPU help to push the Snapdragon 660 up the ladder by several notches.
Also, if we were to look at the benchmark scores, there is a significant difference between the two. As per a report by GSMArena, the Snapdragon 660 on the Nokia 7 plus managed to score a whopping 141822 points, while the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro scored 112649 points.
In a nutshell, we can say that the Snapdragon 660 is an overclocked version of the Snapdragon 636, with improved graphics. For the gamer in you, a phone powered by the Snapdragon 660 would be the ideal choice.
Mi A2 Vs Mi A2 Lite: Everything different between new Xiaomi Android One phones
Unlike last year, Xiaomi has launched not one, but two Android One phones, aka the Mi A2 and the Mi A2 Lite this year. The Mi A2 is successor to the Mi A1 from last year, while the Mi A2 Lite is a toned down version of the Mi A2. One of the reasons behind launching two Android One phones this year could be the pricing. The Mi A2 Lite is a lot more expensive than the Mi A1, at least if the European pricing is to be gone by.
The Lite is an entry-level option for those looking for all the goodness of Xiaomi hardware and stock Android, according to the company, while the Mi A2 would cater to those looking for a more flagship level of Android One experience. Because Xiaomi will be offering the Mi A2 in standard and Lite versions, buyers will have more options to choose from. Sadly, only the Mi A2 will be coming to India which means buyers may have to shell out more this time round as opposed to last year when they could pick up the Mi A1 for as low as around Rs 15,000.
Right off the bat, both the phones rock the same Android 8.1 Oreo software, and also both these phones come with dual rear cameras, and full metal bodies. But there are differences seemingly justifying the price difference between them. Here's a closer look.
1.While the Mi A2 is a rebranded Mi 6X, the Mi A2 Lite is a rehashed Redmi 6 Pro. Both the Mi 6X and the Redmi 6 Pro have already been launched in China, with Xiaomi's custom MIUI software. The Mi A2 and the Mi A2 Lite, on the other hand, run vanilla Android, or more precisely, vanilla Android 8.1 Oreo software out-of-the-box
2.The Mi A2 comes with a 5.99-inch full-HD+ display with a 2160x1080p resolution and 403ppi pixel density. Also, it supports an unusual aspect ratio of 18:9, as against the more traditional 16:9. The phone measures 7.3mm in thickness and is protected up-top by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The Mi A2 Lite, on the other hand, comes with a 5.84-inch full-HD+ display with a 2280x1080 pixel resolution, 19:9 aspect ratio and 432ppi pixel density. Yes, it has a notch.
3.The Mi A2 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor while the Mi A2 Lite is powered by Xiaomi's tried and tested Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor.
4.The Mi A2 will be available in as many as three versions: 4GB RAM and 32GB storage, 4GB RAM and 64GB storage, and 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. The Mi A2 Lite will be available in two versions: 3GB RAM and 32GB storage, and 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. Both the phones support expandable storage.
5.Both the phones support dual-SIM and 4G LTE. The Mi A2 does not have a headphone jack. The Mi A2 Lite has one.
6.The main highlight of the Mi A2, according to Xiaomi, is its camera setup. The dual camera module on the back of the Mi A2 comes with one 12-megapixel sensor (Sony IMX 486 sensor) and another 20-megapixel sensor (Sony IMX 376 sensor). Both the sensors have an f/1.75 aperture. The main sensor has large pixels while the secondary sensor supports pixel binning that should result in all-round good low-light photos. The Mi A2 dual camera setup ships with lots and lots of AI and is therefore capable of churning out machine learning algorithms to produce good quality portraits or photos with shallow of depth of field. The Mi A2 can also intelligently switch between primary and secondary sensor depending on the available light, according to Xiaomi. The dual camera setup is further assisted by a dual-LED (dual-tone) flash. The Mi A2 Lite has a more basic dual camera system on the rear consisting of a 12+5 MP combination.
7.On the front, the Mi A2 comes with a 20-megapixel camera with soft LED flash. The Mi A2 Lite has a 5-megapixel front-facing camera.
8.The Mi A2 is backed by a 3,010mAh battery, and charges over USB Type-C with support for fast charging (Quick Charge 3.0) packed in. The Mi A2 Lite is backed by a larger 4,000mAh battery but charges over standard micro-USB.
9.The Mi A2 will start at 249 Euros (roughly Rs 20,071) for the base version with 4GB RAM and 32GB storage going all the way to 349 Euros (roughly Rs 28,131) for the top-end version with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. The Mi A2 will also be available in 4GB RAM and 64GB storage version for 279 Euros (roughly Rs 22,489). The Mi A2 Lite, meanwhile, starts at 179 Euros (roughly Rs 14,437) for the base version with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage going all the way to 229 Euros for the top-end version with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage (roughly Rs 18,470).
10.Xiaomi will launch the Mi A2 in India on August 8. The company is not bringing the Mi A2 Lite to India, at least for now.

Which is why not many people go for Samsung”s midrange offerings. For that price you can definitely get a Mi, Oppo, Vito or even Huawei with better specs.
I hope every manufacturer got this obvious memo soon....we want bigger battery...we dont care how thin the phone gonna be....just give us a bigger battery phone, 4k mah is the min....samsung start to get it with thier n9 xiaomi pioneer of this asus is getting it....but when xiaomi pull out something like this a2....its dissapointing...
No doubt, will go mi A2, almost stock android About the battery, I'm okay with it since im never gaming on my phone.
If gaming, having 5k battery also not enough.
3k is too small for a big phone. Unless the 660 chip is really amazingly efficient and the os itself sips very little power during standby/idle.
What do we usually rate for battery life? It's the screen on time right? So is it right to make the screen bigger and at the same time reduce the battery capacity?

Valid point. Samsung and Apple phones are way too expensive.

From a user perspective we are very disappointed but not from the business perspective. If they offer you the Mi A2 with 4000mAh battery, who's going to buy their respective Redmi Note 5 Pro or even their flagship phones? You have to remember that Xiaomi collaborate with Google for this project. It's a win win situation. Xiaomi will be responsible for most the hardware and Google for part of the software.
Imagine if the Mi A1 or Mi A2 has the Google camera software, who's going to buy their flagship phone such as Google Pixel anymore?
Overall, as a business point of view it's all about balance.
Redmi 5 plus already have 4000 battery. Not even flagship? So why put 4000 battery in this model? Apa logic ni? People buy M1 A2 mainly for the stock android. Its not even in direct competition with other Xiaomi Phones.
Very true. This phone designed for pure Vanilla Android. Ppl mainly go for the software but if they add a 4000mAh, I doubt the price will be low... Well if someone complained about the MI A2 battery size, go get MI A2 Lite instead. Not say we don't have any choice.

Stay away from Xiaomi if Android One is the main criteria... Spent slightly more on...

Wait longer for price drops...
I used the Mi A1 for a while and software wise, it wasn't too bad. The security updates were timely, more or less. Any other reason not to go with Mi on Android One?

Guys, mi a2 or mi8 se?? Which one do you think much better, both got pros n cons....
Mi8 SE, if it has local availability and the price points are about the same.

My biggest concern would be the GPS and the battery. Xiaomi GPS notorious for not functioning, while 3000 mAh battery is dem small wei!!
It is not run by MIUI. I have no GPS issue on the Mi A1 and I expect this will the same for this phone. As for the battery, 3000 mAh kinda small for a 6 inch screen but it is running on a Snapdragon 660 chipset.

So far my xiaomi note 2 gps no problem till now. But the battery is indeed a big concern if u are a heavy user. I have redmi 5 plus with 4000 battery and i need to charge 2 times a day. Imagine this phone but with fast charge, i am willing to live with it.
- Fast battery charging 5V/2A/10W (Quick Charge 3.0) - Fast battery charging (Quick Charge 4.0) - India only
Not sure we are getting which one?
Battery Huawei Nova 3i has a bigger battery with a 3340 mAh, but the capacity is not everything to evaluate the potential battery life of a phone. We will let you know more when we personally review this phone because given that Qualcomm SoCs are often optimized very well (and given the presence of the stock Android One), Xiaomi Mi A2 may feature a similar battery life even though its battery is smaller. Also, note that Mi A2 has Quick Charge 3.0 which charges the battery faster.

Damn it Mi A2 lite is so near to be my perfect phone. Only if they used newer SD636 instead(still can tolerate with microusb)
Actually what's the plus point with USB Type-C? Type C a bit troublesome for me coz I am still using MicroUSB, need to change almost all of my cables for Type C.

USB type C is designed to be a one-size-fits-all able to replace connector cables in smartphones, game controllers, HDMI, cameras, laptops, printers, scanners, and whatever gadgetry you can think of.
Wonder if you know what the specs or history for Xiaomi and USB C is? Is their USB C compatible with most or all USB C connector/earphones?
Nope. That's just my general knowledge on USB C. Think I read about not so good audio produced from USC C but I'm not audiophile/expert. Can't really comment on that.

The Type C comes in 2 type it self (1) Charging only (2) Charging and Headphone functionality
when you have a headphone jack in device, the output of speakers are always diverted towards the jack not to Type C Port With USB C, it really depends on how manufacturer builds it.
Just concerned that getting mi A2 would mean needing abluetooth earphone, or even worse a usb C to 3.5mm jack converter.

Something to do with dac chip, isn't it? Some cables have it built in iinm to rectify such problem. I could be wrong though

I don"t think I'm going to switch to this Mi A2 yet. I might have to wait for the Mi A3 cause it would be pointless to get another 4GB+64GB variant since I m using the MI A1 with the same size of ram and rom although the 6GB+128GB variant looks very tempting.
I know the damn notch is like a trend thesedays but I wouldn't want a phone with a hole in the middle up of the sky......

Yeah, I was planning to get the Mi A2 due to my pleasant experience using the Mi A1 previously, but given the battery size, I'll give it a skip as well. May test the A2 Lite for fun a little later on when the price drops

i have never used any Xiaomi phones before. past few days i've read about xiaomi phones having hardware issues like GPS chip malfunctions. does it happen in your MiA1?

Nope, none. My Mi A1 GPS worked like a charm. In fact, after I sold my A1 and bought the Redmi 5 Plus, the GPS also had no issues. I think the whole issue about Xiaomi and their phones with faulty GPS may be a little over-exaggerated, or maybe I've just been lucky

this is a mi a2 which the hardware was from the MI 6x ( xiaomi also selling this phone ) .the device are not special design for android one
Aren't this mi a2 available from this Friday onwards? Why I saw a thread in mobiles garage sales claim that he have a ori myset and used for 2 days ?
Frankly I'm a bit skeptical that it is a MY set, anyways, his price is too close to a new one, might as well pay the extra to get the joy of unboxing a new phone.

Yeah, I even reply to his thread and he say he checked is my set. Since it is not even available in Malaysia , most likely his set is ap set. He say get from mobile2go which I checked they only selling the ap set for about 850

Hmm. I bought the Mi A1 because of it's GPS lock in efficiency. I suspect the MIUI is causing the GPS lock in problem with my partner's Redmi Note 4 Pro. Kinda get used to stock Android now and in fact I dun think I will ever try other new phones without the stock Android software in the near future!

Well I'm not sure about that. They can't put a Google camera software because the hardware dept is under Xiaomi. It shouldn't be any problem hardware Xiaomi and software Google. Try asking Asus Zenfone Max Pro A1 or Nokia 7 plus.....

thanks. was thinking about upgrading my oneplus one to a used oneplus 5T, but not anymore . in some custom roms , the GPS can be tweaked , so yeah, maybe its a software bug in MiUI. yes, stock android is what interests me too.

Mobile2Go sells both AP and locally distributed sets so I'd be careful just the same. Anyways, my general rule of thumb is if I can't save 30% off a used set I'd be better off buying a new set

A used OnePlus 5T would still be a better phone though, but I'm guessing it would cost more too.
Mobile2Go sells both AP and locally distributed sets so I'd be careful just the same. Anyways, my general rule of thumb is if I can't save 30% off a used set I'd be better off buying a new set A used OnePlus 5T would still be a better phone though, but I'm guessing it would cost more too.
yes, but don't know where's the phone has been or what shitty fingers used it, if you know what i mean. i have 2 upgrade cycles. kids' next upgrade will be 2019--2 phones. this year is me and waifu's upgrade. oneplus is getting too expensive for the 4 of us.

Ya, understand that. Maybe spoil yourself and your wife, the kids can use basic under RM1k phones
The SoC inside Mi A2 not a dealbreaker lah. The older Mi A1 uses SD625 and I never heard anyone complain about the performance of the phone for day to day usage. The 660 is more than capable to handle daily task, including PUBG.
Yeah. Better CPU and display are so attractive. Another advantage of A2 is local warranty unit available Local warranty > don't know what warranty
SD 660 < SD 710
I rather wait and get Mi 8 SE than this A2. Feeling Mi A2 is overpriced and should price lower than RM900. Mi A2 not really has better camera performance than Mi 8 Se as you thought. Only Good thing on A2 is bigger phone size and cheaper abit than Mi 8 SE

Agree... Mi8 SE got better camera n better screen n most important is good Design

Not deal breaker I agree, and day to day usage shouldn't have any performance difference. But I mainly do gaming... so thinking of better GPU performance in sd710

I don't think too overpriced. See redmi note 5 4+64 is rm9++ for sd636, while A2 sd660 4+64 is 999. I would say is ok maybe. I also tempted to wait for 8SE as well..

Second to that. Though the notch is personal preference

I myself can stand MIUI, been using redmi 5 plus before sold

Really? Mi 8 SE has better camera performance than Mi A2? How so? Sorry, I really don't know. Care to explain in terms of Camera Specs? or other.
With the lite version having 3.5mm and expandable storage, it seems to be a deal breaker for me compared to the A2.
But is the 625 that outdated? I've got really good review from friends about the A1.
Just wondering if at 699 is it a decent price or there are better options out there?
not really outdated. the energy efficiency is still there although of course if u can get better SD and willing to pay more, why not but 625 is still good.
Not forgetting the A2 Lite has a 4000mAh battery too.
Yeah for someone who has run into battery issues lasting long enough and storage issues in the past, the lite looks like it fits better, at least on a practicality and long term basis.
Plus without the 3.5mm it is kind of a real inconvenience whenever you need to use a headphone.
Just wondering whether there are better alternatives out ther at the 700 range.

Well, the Redmi Note 5 is a good alternative as the price has dropped to about 7xx but if you're looking for the pure Android experience then there's not much out there at this price range. There is the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 whch I'm currently using, and while it's running on stock Android, it's not part of the Android One program.

I'm actually looking at Zenfone at the same time. Specs and price wise looks very similar plus the reviews are really good.
Apparently zenfone has a better front cam, and better bettery as well.
But I'm kinda wary of Asus as my old zenfone 5 broke down on me by the second month few years back.

What is your opinion between Zenfone and A2 lite?
I’ve had the Zenfone for just slightly over a week, bought the 3GB/32GB one on Lazada’s flash sale for RM599, and for that price, it’s hard to beat as far as value is concerned. Would like another week or so with it before I give my opinion, but for now, it does what it’s suppose to do very well.
Asus hardware is a bit of a hit and miss, I agree. I had a Zenfone 5 LTE back during the day as well and I also ran into MOBO issues on my second or third month or so. It was still under warranty but took almost a month before I got it back

Ya wey.. The reviews are great. But some part of me after going through all the hassle with the preview asus really made me think many times before trying it out again.
I just realized I missed the 599 promo on lazada for the zenfone. So not sure if it is meant to be for me to get the A2 lite hahahaha
Kinda wonder why do the A2 and A2 lite have different designs. Guess it is because of the hardware difference.

I started the Zenfone Max Pro M1 thread and will be glad to take any questions you may have over there. Best keep this thread clean for Mi A2 and A2 Lite or we might both get reported
Anyways, I will try the Mi A2 or A2 Lite at some point
I've got the A2 for one full day, I was surprised that the battery performs really well. I used the A1 before, while this A2 has a bigger screen and same 3000mah battery, it can still give get around 7 hour of SOT. My usage are mainly web browsing and social media, I also played music with bt headset, some gaming, camera, and about 1 and half hour of youtube.

Wow 7H SOT is great, maybe the SoC is very power efficient.

It has a bigger battery, but I would think the A2 would be better with the newer processor and stock Android. Of course, there are those who prefer MIUI.
U can't go wrong with this phone if you're looking in sub 1k price range.
I am waiting for Mi 8 SE where it almost selling similar price with Mi A2 but with better hardware and camera spec. Do not know when MI 8 SE is coming to Malaysia?

I was comparing mi 8 se before I bought the A2. I didn't pick mi8 se cos of its os miui, plus there is no official MY set available. For the slightly better 710 SOC, I don't think I able to tell the difference in performance on daily usage.

"uninspiring battery life" - just 1hr short from iphone x lol
Their verdict is not too encouraging as well: -
"The Xiaomi Mi A1 was an incredible value proposition in its market segment, the Mi A2 falls somewhat short. It takes away key features like storage expansion and universal headphone connectivity, plus it misses the mark in crucial areas like display and battery life. Affordable as it may be, it wouldn't be our default choice in the midrange quite like the A1 was."

I do agree on the microsd and headphone jack removal. it would have been the perfect mid ranger if they keep those 2 things.
The older A1 is still very good if u don't need a better camera like the A2. Performance wise I don't think u can tell the difference in day to day usage
guys, compared with nokia 7 plus, what is the pros and cons?
Nokia 7 Plus bigger battery 3800 mah, Camera has Zeiss. Both same CPU same screen size.
But feel like Nokia 7 Plus camera is so so only. Mi A2 camera is quite good. Nokia i think can get below 1.5k, but 4GB RAM. Mi A2 1.2k can get 6GB RAM.

Yes agree with this...plus can install camera app from pixel summore if want better result compare to stock..hehe
Went there to take number.. Mine i think 30th person...
Asked the promoter when can start to pay, she said 4pm... I said nvm, i got the card, i can come back like 6pm to pay.. then she said kenot.. only those people who queue by 4pm can buy.. i'm confused...
After molest the phone, i left the place... Not a deal breaker to buy on the spot... It would be only good to queue for 2 hours when special price is 599 or 699 for 200pax..
got backfired kaw kaw.. they took the video down.. lol..
But one thing i learned from this post, people tend to react based on video without knowing the whole thing. Out of no reason, Mi Malaysia was accused RACIST because the MC spoke chinese... hahahaha padahal MC got speak other language also la..
Just received my A2, from LZD seller. It states as Xiaomi Malaysia Warranty, but come with two pin charger. Is this right? Not UK-plug chrger?
Yes, they come with either 2 pin plug or 3 pin plug, both also fine as long as the local distributor's sticker is there. It was the same for the A1.

MI A2, MI A2 lite, Redmi Note 5, Redmi 5 Plus.
Which is the best phone to get? I've been waiting and still undecided after so long lol
My personal take is that if MIUI doesn't bother you and you're not keen for the pure Android experience, then RN5 would be a better all rounder choice.

Do you wear jeans? How does it feels in the front pocket?
Straight away bought 6gb version at Mi store last night. It's the faster stock Android phone I have ever used (if compare to Asus Zenfone Max Pro where I sold it after 2 days of using) Its truly worth extra money to get this phone One thing I'm not happy with is the battery For me I think I'll have to charge twice a day
The charger comes in the box is the normal charger or quick charger? Otherwise I'll get another quick charger

It's a normal charger, been stated in many reviews. By the way, is the charger a 2 pin or 3 pin?
For the battery, how many hours of SOT for one charge?
How's the GPS lock on for those who has the phone?
Got issues mcm the Mi A1?
Most of us has no GPS lock in issue from Mi A1.

Just bought a mi a2 at rm999 from directd this afternoon. Came back wanted to check mcmc my label. Realised no 20 digits security code. Went back to them but they insisted that's a xiaomi malaysia set and warranty covered by xiaomi malaysia. How to verify this claim? I clearly asked for msia set when I purchased.

That tab of 'verify your phone purchase' return a correct phone model and delivery address as malaysia. But the phone doesn't come with the 20 digit security for the authentication tab.

How did you transfer your old data from RN3 to A2? Especailly the SMS?
Any comment about this phone? I'm thinking about this and nokia 6.1 plus, and I'm more inclined to nokia currently. Since this is my second phone, I have an iphone for main usage. I'm more concerned about the design, sd card kind of feature. That's what keeping me away from a2 currently, else it looks great. Hope someone could give me first hand experience.

I dint backup SMS because most of the SMS from bank/insurance only . U can try dl SMS backup+ from playstore , it is backup to gmail iinm . Only backup whatapss and wechat chat history and media . Other apps i reinstall only, if ur hp rooted , can use titanium backup whole app.

Hi guys, how is the phone so far? Considering mi a2 and redmi note 5. How's the battery life, camera performance.
I was considering rn5 when I saw mia2 having better camera and taking pic in low light and also the storage. Saw rn5 with 32gb is rm799 while mi a2 64 gb is rm999. A2 has a better cpu and camera and storage but it lack the battery capacity of rn5. And they say the camera difference will only be noticeable in low light.
So how do you all find your A2?
This post has been edited by Nekochan: Aug 5 2018, 10:14 AM
I just received mine yesterday. I notice my a2 had little problem (wifi connection disconnect & very slow speed) to connect with 5ghz wifi from 2nd floor (router at 1st floor). Comparing speed test with my old rn3, rn3 speed much faster by large margin. If u do speed test in front of router, then mi a2 can get full speed.
One more thing, speed with my 4g connection also not as fast as rn3. Really wierd. U guys experience the same problem?

I don't have problem with WiFi. My router is upstairs in the living hall and I'm downstairs. No problem with GPS either.

Those security code normally is on CHINA set Mi hologram sticker , local authorized distro Era Internatianal Network SB dont hv that sticker1 . Just like those who buy imported mi powerbank u can c the hologram sticker on box , local Mi MY wont hv tat sticker 1. If successfully verify deliver to MY mean not AP or clone set .

Phones are getting more and more expensive. So far Mi might be the only one pricing their phones quite reasonably. Even the likes of Huawei and Oppo have gone past the 3k mark.
Can last tillthe end of the day with normal usage?
Just want to know the battery performance with dual-sim enabled and running.
It really depend the way how the users use their phone I personally have to charge at least twice during this two weekend day But I'm not sure tomorrow office working day it can last one day for one shot or not
If u really care the battery I think u can go for A2 Lite

Tested in mi store while I'm traveling to kl.. when capture a photo and it seem like saving the photo slow a bit.. I expect better or faster from SOC 660. Note 5 seem faster with SD 636.. it isn't because of watermark issue?
Actually plan to get one for my mum.. they never know it but plan to get better one for her to use longer time.. her previous note 3 SD 650 broke after fall
When I charge with my Aukey charger that supports QC 3.0, the battery icon didn't show the QC 3.0 icon that looks like a circle with a lighting bolt.
Is there something wrong?
I maybe wrong .. don't think there is quick charge icon on status bar (like on miui) .. only on lockscreen indicate "rapid charging" when quick charge.
Im waiting for Mi 8/SE but have been tempted to use the A2.
Used both Miui and stock android and prefer stock android
But the camera performance and design is better on Mi 8. Just loveee notches as well as glass back. I really not sure now need help
Wait or go A2
Subject to your preference.
a2 good to go if your budget around that amount but the stupid battery broke the deal.
If you look at antutu benchmark. Rn5 score better than A2. Really up to you when and what you want.
For me, my rn3 still ok. I shall wait until Oct to see what is the mi8 Malaysia price. If my phone can last longer till next year, a2 for 128gb price might drop...

I'm using huawei and I don't think it is really good in overall if compare with other flagship.. parent generation not really need flagship phone. Recent mid range phone definitely sufficient for old generation usage. Just a waste if you get them a flagship but they just know how to use Facebook and camera for daily shooting..
Simply operate like mi a1 or a2 are really good enough, no need fancy stuff.
not so fast, nobody in xda done it yet. but there's only 1 msian guy in xda who has the phone. maybe wait till the india launch. then later those india developers will cook up some custom rom and etc.

hmm just thinking want to unlock it before daily uses or not? if not later when full of data all will wipe out when unlocking.
Just pulled the trigger, bought the 6+128 version gold colour malaysia set for RM 1,199, free original xiaomi PLM02ZM fast charging 10000mah power bank and branded type C cable, not a bad deal.
Replacing my old alcheapo vivo y21, a huge upgrade lol.

Android one phones are created by OEMs and powered by Google. Here powering means, software control of the phone. Patch updates, Major updates are only provided by Google. Your phone will not come under Xiaomi under software section. This is the concept of Android one. It is for marketing the pure android to the users who loves stock andriod than the customized skins by which Google can become popular. This is also applied for Mi A1. So, after two years, Xiaomi won't take care of your phone. Because, they are not developing pure android but MiUi. So, you can't expect any major update from Xiaomi.
I will start considering this Mi A2 should the Mi A1 guaranteed monthly updates for two years by the Android One program nearing to expiry date.
Can try some low light human shots. Really outdoor dark type. Wonder can see face or not. If pass i sure getting one. But i really suprised kopi get this model. Not ngam status with your ferrari leh.

I usually don't use screenshot shortcut on notification area if there is one (A2 doesn't have it). I set additional button for it on the navbar using "custom navigation bar". I set left side additional button (with no icon) for screenshot & right side for sleep/screen off
wanna ask current owners - the 4G RAM is sufficient or the 6G is better for smooth and stability. Android phones nowadays a few going 6G. 4G used to be good enough. As this one stock Android I'm wondering.

The 4G owners are happy with said amount of RAM?
I tested 4GB version right at the Mi store, feel so smooth and ram mgmt quite good though after that I bought 6GB version. first time owning an Android smartphone where I feel too smooth to be true

it is android stock firmware bro,,, not miui.. that is why smooth like butter..
No. For DiGi, it doesn't support 4G+. Signal bar only shows 4G only. Not sure for other telcos.
Note: When you use the UMB codes (*128#, etc...) the connection will switch to 3G for a while, same when making/receiving a call. I think this is same for most phone (my old phone does this, but I think VoLTE phones don't). Just sharing. Can someone check if you restart the phone it doesn't need the startup password anymore before you can see the lockscreen? In Mi A1 you have to unlock it first before it will show the lockscreen.
edit: Added note.
thanks for the feedback. seems i wont go for this phone anymore
I'll share my experience pairing Bluetooth to my car audio. After I've done the pairing, I played a song and the audio was very bad. It kept skipping lunch like some kind of signal loss. After a few tries I rebooted my phone and then it worked
what do you mean ? physically not nice or OS not nice?
Physically. When we touch the navigation button or keyboard, there will be a feedback/vibration from the device. The feel isn't nice. Thinking whether to return the phone.

Lol Just turn it off to save battery

All those flaw that he mentioned like the proximity censor, the brightness calibration etc can be fix on software updates? Meaning its not going to be like that forever?

That's very specific problem, I didn't know there are different "feel" for phone vibration.

google for enable volte via code "*#*#86583#*#*", "*#*#4636#*#*" and enable via setting menu.
Ahh, Ok. Pity about the battery size though, otherwise I would have pulled the trigger
My initial concern is the battery as well, but considering it support quick charge 3.0 and also better SoC and stock android that is better in battery consumption, plus I saw review by geekyranjit that says "it wasnt as bad as I thought" , I decide to pull the trigger

For my usage, the battery was able to last more than 12 hours. Which is better than my Redmi Note 3 that has a bigger but older battery.

1. android one/google OS should keep your SOT around 4-5hours at least,.....some managed to get 6-7 hours 2. get a fast charging plug, so you can top up the battery when needed
i think the battery should be fine as my 2014 oneplus one has a 3100mAH battery and initially i could get SOT 7-8 hours.
Just got my phone, 6GB ram variant. So far quite smooth compared to Nexus 6P. No lag when I browse or watch video. Long term usage I'm still unsure though. The most noticeable difference to me is the screen. Very poor viewning angle compared to 6P.

Ya, I got 4-5 hours SOT with the Mi A1 as well previously so I know what to expect more or less from the A2 as far as battery life is concerned. But now that I’ve tasted the forbidden fruit of a 5000mAh battery, anything less than 4000mAh is a problem

depends on your priorities i suppose. for me, i would gladly take stock android with its updates than worry about the battery size.
Hi, any new owners here know where to purchase the tempered glass.? Went to a couple shops dont have (obviously because very new to the market) and lazada only have for the lite version.

I am using redmi s2 sp , it is ok but the side u need adjust nicely only put it on else the sp will in ur screen . So the downside is not wide enuf but still can fully cover if u adjust nicely .
How much hassle for warranty when it come to import set? I want the blue color version, but seem there is no locat set for that color
I think as long as you buy from a reputable store and it’s convenient for you to go back there if anything happens then it should be OK. I did hear that a warranty claim for an imported set might take longer than for a local set, but I have no personal experience in this.

if you pandai to fix then can buy online. if you don't want the hassle can go to mi store in 1u. I fixed it there. they have specific for A2. but on the pricier side. 39 bucks.

Same as most of the other Xiaomi phones, this phone supports intraband CA only, able to get 4G+ on unifi mobile which rides on B40+B40 and B38+B38 at certain location while other telco on interband CA is a no go.

Can anyone share their battery usage ? Feel like it consume alot , around +10% battery life when 7hrs of sleep time .
try :
1. disable proximity sensor check 2. disable auto- rotate screen 3. location change to battery saving and bluetooth scanning set to off 4. whatsapp, disable auto backup, set to manual backup

2. i always disable auto rotate but i dont think it will affect battery life whn it is sleep since the screen is off 3. my gps and bluetooth r off all the time 4. backup default is off , whatapps only backup whn i tap "backup"
Can u shw ur battery usage , juz wana c whether the graph is normal / similar.

if you use betterbatterystats app, you will see wakelocks from google fit ( try turn it off also in settings>google), and google sensors. these sensors get triggered by the screen rotation ( google sensors, keyboard, whatsapp) even when asleep. you can try the unrooted version of betterbatterystats app if you want to pinpoint the wakelock. in my phone, that app recorded a few hours of wakelocks from these sensors even when asleep.

Can u show ur battery life graph? I found tat when rest time the graph still sloping down , RN3 pro only use 1% when sleep time idle for 7-8hrs . Mi a2 minimum use 5% of battery life .

Hello guys. For those who owns the Mi A2, is the location symbol always on your status bar? It always on my A2, and won't go away even with the location service is turned off. Restart will make it go away, but it will appear again and stay there after a while.

settings>apps+notifications>app permissions> location....check and see which app you allowed or denied location access

Yes, i noticed it happened randomly. Should be a bug.
Anyone knows how to report it? I googled but can't find any...
I found another bug where the plug in earphone is not working and sound came out from speaker instead (this happened after i turn on battery saver mode) The only solution is to restart the phone
Just had my first hands on with the A2 - it's solid but don't get why Mi had to remove the 3.5mm jack for this phone. Anyways, if stock Android isn't important, the RN5 with the new price is a more bang for buck buy in my opinion.

I screened all the apps, and only allow those that really need location service. Interesting part is, the symbol stays on the status bar although I have turned off location service.

Yup, a very annoying bug for me personally. Haven't try the the earphone adapter yet...

Really? Today I went to one utama to try out these two phones. I found out that RN5 take good picture as well. Im not sure if its due to the camera app but RN5 can take better photo than Mi A2. Mi A2 when taking bright light especially the billboard in front of it, it takes really bad picture as there is black shadowy line on it while RN5 has none of that.
Tried PUBG on MI A2, not bad. There was one point a bit laggy. Not sure if it was the phone or what...

It could possibly be the MIUI camera app is better than the stock Android camera app. If you can install GCam then it probably takes better photos.
This what I m waiting for. Luckily I didn't commit to A2. Hahaha
For those that plan to buy the 1.2k model, this one does seem to be a better deal. I use A1 before, with SD625 can feel considerable lag when scrolling in Chrome, even when compared to SD820. Not sure how much improvement SD660 would be.
If because Android One vs MIUI, can easily flash custom ROM for Mi 8. The thing with Android One is it's like a bare bone phone, no additional function from other manufacturer ROM. Easily get bored with the ROM. I flash custom ROM after a month or two with stock ROM. So if can accept Android One, sure can accept Custom ROM since it have more function than vanilla Android.

I have yet to try PUBG with mi a2.
I tried PUBG in RN5 and killed 18 people on the first game. The graphic was smooth like butter and the aim was accurate.

But it's not SD cpu
Beside I heard recently Huawei stop allowing their device bootloader to be unlocked?

Not just Chrome, how to say this. The smoothness feel between SD625 vs SD820 is too great, maybe the other hardware also the reason, like storage, GPU, and RAM.
Been using for 2 days...i must say the battery really drain fast... Hmmm
After i do a full cycle charge , use till 0% battery and hp auto showdown thn charge -> 100% , the battery life become better . Can do more then 7hours SOT.

I heard about it before doing the complete charge cycle.
Perhaps will try for one time
One round of 30 mins mobile legend already consume 15%-20+ %

When u drain it to 0 and autoshutdown, when you recharge back do you switch the phone on or let it charge as it is?
u ok with notch and miui? if yes then mi8 no brainer, better chips. i took a2 for stock android only.
I dont mind notch display. I would prefer stock android than miui. Must have feature for me is the dual app/app clone feature to run two whatsapp. Not sure mi a2 have or not.

Mi a2 smooth?
a2 dont have dual apps in default. if notch is not an issue i suggested u go with mi8, u can flash custom rom to near stock in future as i believe there will be alot of support from xda.
yeah for me is quite smooth as im not a mobile gamer, only for browsing reddit, reading articles and social media. battery life is sustainable until end of day without recharge.

By the end of the day, there's no perfect phone. You win some, you lose some.
Ahh OK. Good to know. Anyways I think I'll stick to my guns and skip this. Will look at the A2 Lite since I don't need the performance
hehe, same here. aiming for a2 lite. official MY launch this saturday rite. almost a perfect phone for my usage. Just wondering how 'inferior' screen quality compared to a2

Yes, same case as me, SDcard slot solved by getting the 128G version and i dont always use jack. Luckily the loudspeaker is loud enough for my usage The battery life is ok with me, as it was equal, if not better than my redmi 3s prime that have 4000mAh, not sure if the processor help a lot in this. Yeah, QC3.0 is a good addition for me. i straight invested in QC3.0 in everything such as QC3 power bank, power brick and cables. Its a very good investment.
it is said to support qc4 but only in india. is it limited to us by software or just need to buy qc4.0 chargers?
If im not mistaken, the QC4.0 for india is enable directly at the chipset. So even if you using a QC4.0 charger you will only utilized QC3.0 for MY set since they opted for that. Correct me if im wrong.
not sure why so many people complaining about the battery, for my usage, somehow it is on par with my previous Mate 8 and better than my Note FE. SOT minimum 6 hours, 4G/WiFi always on, summore listen to music through out the night when sleeping using earphone. The one thing I cannot tahan is the lack of audio jack.

Bigger is always better.
But I don't complain about the battery too, 3000mAh can easily last me a day with 20~30% left to spare.
