QUOTE(spy1hitman @ Jul 25 2018, 10:13 PM) yup, unlike other platforms, Shopee will hold your money first until you confirm you receive the product and in good condition. That's what i like about shopee, refund process is easy too, if u buy product from china seller just send back to Shopee office they will process the refund |

I bought 6 units Kingston 240GB A400 from different Shoppee & Lazada vendors. All local sellers. All are genuine. In fact the first time i bought was RM202 with codes. The last was RM180 without codes. All are used to update my 2 laptops and relatives old laptops. The best lowest cost upgrade ever!!!!

QUOTE(Archemedia @ Jul 25 2018, 10:04 PM) Just a few months ago i bought a 480GB Kingston A400 @ RM466 After over 20 years in operation, Western Digital Corporation announced that it will be shutting down its HDD (hard disk drive) manufacturing facility in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, by the end of 2019.now market price for this SSD is only around RM300 Western Digital (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd Managing Director Gouw Kim San says that the move is in response to the declining demand for HDDs in the long-term. “Western Digital Corporation is continually evaluating and transforming its business to deliver value to customers and remain competitive as a data technology leader. This transformation requires that the company take difficult but important actions, including optimisation of its large-scale manufacturing facilities located throughout Asia,” he said in a statement. US-based Western Digital entered Malaysia in 1973, initially making custom semiconductors before transitioning to manufacturing hard drives. In 2011, a US$1.2bil (RM4.8bil) research and development facility was added to the 92,903sq m manufacturing plant in PJ. The shutdown will not eliminate Western Digital’s presence in Malaysia altogether, as the company still has manufacturing sites in Johor and Sarawak. Gouw stated that Western Digital will shift its focus from HDD to SDD (solid state drive) and NAND flash production in Malaysia, with plans to expand its SSD manufacturing plant in Penang. “The company is in the final stages of commissioning its second SSD facility in Penang, which will go into production in the coming months,” he said. Western Digital will retain a Center of Excellence in Selangor, housing several key engineering teams, core operational planning and regional support functions. Employees impacted by this move will receive assistance, including severance compensation and upskilling support. “Western Digital remains firmly committed to Malaysia. The company values and appreciates its 45-year history of partnership with the Malaysian Government and looks forward to many more years of shared prosperity and success,” said Gouw. This isn’t the first time a US-based disk storage solutions company shutdown its major manufacturing facilities in Malaysia. Last year, Seagate Technology closed its factories in Penang and Negri Sembilan after over 20 years of operation in this country. Seagate also attributed the closures to low demands of HDDs on a global scale. QUOTE(oldies1950 @ Jul 25 2018, 10:59 PM) Not so straight forward as it seems. China (not Taiwan) is still relying on Tsinghua Unigroup to tap into NAND market.CHINA has now the capacity to make their own SSD. see.... https://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?catId=...&SearchText=ssd Thus breaking the monopoly of the big players.... Samsung, Scandisk and Kingston. To retaliate , these companies have decided to DUMP prices to stuff out these new players from CHINA. GOOD for CONSUMERS !!!! ................................................................................ Hope they start making GPU ...... Prices now is really crazy ... Main OEMs like Samsung/Intel/Micron/sandisk don't throw their reject NANDs into garbage bins. These NANDs are low binned. i.e some parts don't work/low reliability/bad performance/ etc. Kinda like how i7 get binned into Pentium chips. They might be the same die, but performance is different. Depending on the agreement, the original laser mark is either erased and then lasered with these manufacturer's own, or allowed to use back the same markings. That's why u see some of these cheapo SSDs have Intel NAND markings. They are indeed Intel NANDs, just low binned stuff. I'd buy the cheapest SSD from major OEMs before I will touch these. |

QUOTE(Archemedia @ Jul 25 2018, 10:04 PM) Just a few months ago i bought a 480GB Kingston A400 @ RM466 clearing old gen stock perhaps..now market price for this SSD is only around RM300 A400 is known for short lifespan.. not that it matter much when it's this cheap.. among the reasons for the cheap pricing is because it uses Toshiba 2D Planar 15nm TLC NAND the mid-to-high end SSDs usually use 64-layer 3D TLC NAND, V-NAND-based NVMe SSD, etc etc... wayyyy faster and longer lifespan.. it's still a good purchase for those of you who haven't tried any SSD before A400 still significantly faster than your mechanical HDD just monitor their health from time to time, like i said, they're known for short lifespan This post has been edited by kerolzarmyfanboy: Jul 25 2018, 11:51 PM |

QUOTE(Doraku @ Jul 25 2018, 10:41 PM) to alot people, we dont care much about drive enduranceif i got option of 2TB TLC drive or 1TB MLC drive at nearly the same price, I will be happy to choose the TLC drive. its not like during the infant period of SSD when the storage is around 60GB, of course that time endurance is a concern because you are going to erase and re-write your data alot. here is my 3years old SSD stat and I use it as torrent transit drive ![]() This post has been edited by zerorating: Jul 26 2018, 12:09 AM |

QUOTE(kerolzarmyfanboy @ Jul 25 2018, 11:49 PM) clearing old gen stock perhaps.. What brand do you recommend then, for cheap but better quality SSD?A400 is known for short lifespan.. not that it matter much when it's this cheap.. among the reasons for the cheap pricing is because it uses Toshiba 2D Planar 15nm TLC NAND the mid-to-high end SSDs usually use 64-layer 3D TLC NAND, V-NAND-based NVMe SSD, etc etc... wayyyy faster and longer lifespan.. it's still a good purchase for those of you who haven't tried any SSD before A400 still significantly faster than your mechanical HDD just monitor their health from time to time, like i said, they're known for short lifespan |

SSD if can get 500gb...the more space used up the read/write speed drop, after clearing back up some space the read/write speed goes back up.. nowadays 1 game also around 20-30gb already.

HDD vs SSD Bad HDD, most likely you will recover data because the data in on platter Bad SSD, you are on your luck |

Why must keep some space in the SSD? can do this by leaving some unallocated partition space for the SSD?
so cheap. i bot 860 evo last 1-2 months for RM350. but only use the SATA2 port. Using old socket 775 core2 duo motherboard. |

QUOTE(kurtkob78 @ Jul 26 2018, 09:51 AM) Why must keep some space in the SSD? can do this by leaving some unallocated partition space for the SSD? There's a rule stating that you should keep more than 15-20% empty (unallocated, unformatted) so that it can maintain in performance mode (fast garbage collection) instead of storage modeso cheap. i bot 860 evo last 1-2 months for RM350. but only use the SATA2 port. Using old socket 775 core2 duo motherboard. This is called over-provisioning. QUOTE In practice, an SSD’s performance begins to decline after it reaches about 50% full. This is why some manufacturers reduce the amount of capacity available to the user and set it aside as additional over-provisioning. For example, a manufacturer might reserve 28 out of 128GB and market the resulting configuration as a 100GB SSD with 28% over-provisioning. In actuality, this 28% is in addition to the built-in 7.37%, so it’s good to be aware of how vendors toss these terms around. Users should also consider that an SSD in service is rarely completely full. SSDs take advantage of this unused capacity, dynamically using it as additional over-provisioning. This post has been edited by ak101ss: Jul 26 2018, 10:28 AMSome SSD manufacturers provide software tools to allow for over-provisioning of drives by the user. Actually, even without special software, any user can set aside a portion of the SSD when first setting it up in the system by creating a partition that does not use the drive’s full capacity. This unclaimed space will automatically be used by the controller as dynamic over-provisioning. There is one obvious drawback to over-provisioning: the more unused capacity one reserves to increase writing speeds, the less capacity there is for storage. With hard drives, the somewhat similar practice of short stroking, which confines reads and writes to the fastest outer tracks of the drive platters, is less penalizing because the cost per gigabyte is lower with magnetic media. At $1 to $3 per gigabyte for enterprise-class SSDs, the decision to give up 25% or more of a drive’s capacity becomes more difficult. There had better be some real benefit when giving up those expensive bytes! |

It is still good as new till today (never used more than half of its space). Over-exaggerated, the endurance is like 1/3 of MLCBut given the choice of MLC vs TLC, I will choose MLC any time any day. There are reason MLC costing a premium over TLC of same size. TLC if same size easily have endurance only one tenth of what MLC can offer. For storage you want something as long lasting as possible. But nowadays it’s VNAND era, VNAND TLC is an acceptable compromise that have an endurance closer to conventional MLC. The endurance for VNAND MLC should on theory be over the roof, LOL. |

Tlc can easily last more than 5 years for consumer. U are not enterprise user.stop worrying about ssd lifespan. For average user that write 10gb everyday tlc ssd can life up to 20years.so u probably already upgrade new hardware or die.

bought a samsung evo 860 1TB for 235 USD including shipping which is about RM1000 off of Amazon, meanwhile shops here are still selling it for RM1.2 - 1.5k, only liloong sells for cheaper at RM1.1k.

For common software (Chrome, Skype etc), use Ninite.Especially windows update and other main software. I cloned my hdd to ssd. Then bought an m2 pcie, clone from ssd to m2. Lel |

Bought 500gb 970 Evo a month ago. If the price dropped enough I'll follow up with a 1tb as extra storage.
Going to give gtx 1180 a year before I decide whether it's worth my money. |

I'm using the 1TB for storage only though, I alraedy have a 960 EVO NVME for the boot drive and I'm not using any RAID mode (magician doesn't work with raid mode). So that might be the difference. Also noticed the 1TB drive is made in china instead of korea. |

Ran some check on the SSD and it fits the Samsung US info but I can't recall China/Korea manufacturing though, will verify this. Fingers crossed that it works with Magician else a bit of a pity. |

Buy the 240gb bro. Less than rm200 is a steal Still worry that this low end model A400. How bad can it be. |

QUOTE(tenuk_cyber @ Aug 8 2018, 04:08 PM) i've checked benchmarks, it's just a little faster.but i know the a400 uses compression for faster transfer. compressed files will be slower. i would go for gigabutt. it's 256GB, so the 16GB extra makes up for the rm20. |

Confirm over supply since Jun.
https://epsnews.com/2018/06/01/nand-flash-o...d-prices-lower/ I think when SST comes after Aug, prices will rise back. So anyone wanna upgrade their slow laptop/ desktop better do it this month. |

Kingston A400 price dropped few months ago. It's TLC NAND, that's why it's cheap.

Good is can store more, cheaper hardware, bad is the cell being write twice more so life span is further cut by half. |

QUOTE(T600 @ Sep 29 2018, 04:36 PM) After doing a bit of searching, seems like it worth the money, it decreases the program loading time, my issues is it took way too long to load the program such as photoshop, chrome (25-30sec first launch), adobe premiere etc. And playing a high bitrate videos files seems impossible, you will find VLC bar trying to keep up and the video play faster than it could load, talking about huge 1080p at 45mbps, hope with an SSD I no longer have to deal with this shit. It definitely is, and you wouldn't wanna stick to HDD after that.Like what most of the techies out there would say, SSD is the holy grail in todays computing world. I have a 6 years old Acer laptop with i2760 processor and 640m graphic card. Is it worth to repair and add ssd?
Condition of the laptop pretty bad >battery totally dead >very fast overheat then shutdown >can't connect to Wi-Fi anymore. If by lan cable after overhead also dead >loading damn slow. This one probably can be overcome by replacing the old 1tb hdd with maybe 480gb ssd |

But i have bought from both shopee & lazada before. Can you imagine just early this year i bought an A400 240 GB for RM208? Now is as low up to RM158. I'm not even complaining to upgrade old computers and laptops. |

QUOTE(schneck @ Oct 9 2018, 12:57 PM) Kingston is like at least 30% cheaper than other brand.if you scared the A400 not reliable, which is already 3yrs warranty. You can pay RM20-50 buy the UV500 SSD that come with 5yrs warranty. Both of these still last longer than a HDD. |

QUOTE(netmatrix @ Oct 9 2018, 12:52 PM) Can try bring IMBI and see if there are compatible replacement batteries for that. If your lappie is old and DELL wants RM500 for new batteries, just F them and buy outside. They actually told me the price is around 300 for a new batt including installation and all with warranty 1 year. But they asked parts department, end up no stock... veli sad. But they give me the part model and ask me go out find myself. QUOTE(ikr99 @ Oct 9 2018, 12:53 PM) QUOTE(salimbest83 @ Oct 9 2018, 12:55 PM) Will kaboom or not? |

QUOTE(schneck @ Oct 9 2018, 01:01 PM) If you already surf around and cannot find any lower priced one, thats the best deal you can get la. I saw most are starting to hit the most bottom price they can offer. Because like for RM1 or even 90 cents difference only. |

QUOTE(jerm57 @ Oct 9 2018, 04:09 PM) Should be fine lah. Anyways, Kingston is pretty steady brand and the product is covered by warranty. Kingston SSD got a bad name last time because they switched the components of their SSD while retaining the same name.Basically their SSD had good speed and price, most reviewers also agree and recommended it. Later a lot of users complain cannot get speeds reviewers are getting. So reviewers buy retail to test and found that Kingston switched their components to slower one. So most reviewers retracted their recommendation and hentam Kingston for ' bait & switch' marketing. |

New tech bring cheaper & larger capacity but shorter durability. |

QUOTE(schneck @ Oct 9 2018, 04:31 PM) As far as I know they haven't done the same 'bait and switch' anymore ever since they got called out for it.So whatever they are selling now, should be as advertised. But they are not a 'trusted' brand anymore. Here is the article of what happen few years back. https://www.anandtech.com/show/7763/an-upda...wer-micron-nand |

Kingston do not manufacture their own NAND chips and DRAM. Crucial is actually Micron and they manufacture both NAND and DRAM themselves. Kingston bought chips from 3rd party and assemble it. You can imagine. If i manufacture my own chips , i would definitely keep the best chips from binning process for myself rather than sell to my competitor. |

Yes from paper you able to write down the difference. But in real world usage amacam? Like no different wor... Unless there is proven reliability performance between the two. |

QUOTE(0168257061 @ Oct 10 2018, 10:48 AM) Yes from paper you able to write down the difference. Somewhere back in 2014. Kingston was short of NAND chips for V300 model. Performance was very different if you get different batches because they use different NAND chips in tht model. So in order to fulfil market demand they simply buy their materials even subpar ones. Consumers fell cheated back then and tht case was widely known. HereBut in real world usage amacam? Like no different wor... Unless there is proven reliability performance between the two. NAND manufacturers themselves that sell retail SSD will not hv such issue as stocks are always reserved for ownself as priority , got excess only sell to others. So i would say, buy only Samsung , Crucial/Micron ,Sandisk/WD, Toshiba/OCZ , and Hynix. Dont buy from those dont manufacture their own NAND chips. You dont know what is " under the hood" as bill of materials can be different as they can buy from different supplier. |

QUOTE(yeapsc73 @ Sep 29 2018, 04:54 PM) I have a 6 years old Acer laptop with i2760 processor and 640m graphic card. Is it worth to repair and add ssd? almost same situation as u, I have an Acer laptop laying around. The fan stop working so it will shut down by itself when it's too hot.Condition of the laptop pretty bad >battery totally dead >very fast overheat then shutdown >can't connect to Wi-Fi anymore. If by lan cable after overhead also dead >loading damn slow. This one probably can be overcome by replacing the old 1tb hdd with maybe 480gb ssd For quick solution, u may try vacuum type laptop cooler, it cools my laptop quite efficiently. U can change the internal fan also. I refer to to this video on how to open up the laptop, change the fan and reapply thermal compound. The fan can be bought cheaply in lelong.my Quite some work there, lost a few screws, in the end the fan is working now but the laptop still gets quite hot without the vacuum laptop cooler. could be due to the thermal compound that i use, cheapest one by cooler master. |
