Cicinho: Roma won't compromise [cool.gif
Thursday 27 March, 2008

Roma defender Cicinho is happy and settled with the Giallorossi and is ready to fight for glory on all fronts.

The talented wing-back struggled to assert himself at the start of the season after arriving from Real Madrid and came in for some criticism.

However, Cicinho has won over Coach Luciano Spalletti and has made himself a regular at the Stadio Olimpico.

"I have always been convinced that I made the right choice to leave Real Madrid for Roma," he insisted in the Corriere dello Sport.

"It was an enormous source of satisfaction to knock my former side out of Europe, even though I left a lot of friends there and I always enjoyed the atmosphere.

"Now I have Roma inside me and I am ready for a big end to the season. I am sure that this Giallorossi side can take me to my objectives and also allow me to return to the Brazil side."

Roma's Scudetto hopes have been re-ignited after Inter's recent turmoil, but the Lupi will have to juggle their Champions League and Coppa Italia campaigns as well.

"We play every game to win," Cicinho stressed. "Otherwise there is such a risk.

"Who says that by giving up the Champions League, for example, we would win the Scudetto?

"The only way is to go all out for everything and I know that my teammates see it like I do."

Serie A Week 31 - 29/3/08 (17.00 UK)

Cagliari 1 - 1 Roma
Ferrari og 3 ©, Totti 45 ®
Stadio Sant'Elia

Francesco Totti equalised on the stroke of half-time, but Cagliari are scaring Roma with Matteo Ferrari's own goal.

This was a crunch match for the title race and relegation battle, as the Sardinians were on the verge of an incredible escape after the three-point penalty was quashed and the Giallorossi had closed the gap on Inter to four points. Cagliari had taken seven points from a possible nine going into this game, but had Daniele Conti - son of Roma director Bruno - suspended. Daniele De Rossi, Simone Perrotta and Mirko Vucinic also sat out bans for the visitors.

Roma hadn't won here since October 1995 and lost 3-2 last season, so this was the trickiest fixture they could face ahead of the Champions League quarter-final with Manchester United.

It certainly was a stunning start! After Michele Fini skimmed the woodwork, Matteo Ferrari accidentally turned a corner kick into his own net just two minutes and four seconds in! Rodrigo Taddei and Alexander Doni looked able to get hold of it, but neither of them were quick enough.

Ferrari made up for it soon after with a well-timed tackle on Pasquale Foggia inside the box, but Roma fought back and Ludovic Giuly's snapshot from 20 metres stung the palms of lifelong Giallorossi fan Marco Storari.

Roma were visibly less sharp than the Sardinians in the opening stages, but gained more confidence and David Pizarro drilled over. Amantino Mancini should have equalised on 22 minutes when Francesco Totti's header was flicked on to the back post, but the unmarked Brazilian incredibly ballooned over the bar!

Mancini went a lot closer moments later, as he smartly trapped a long ball, cut back past the defender and his low drive cracked against the outside of the upright.

Storari was tested again by Giuly's fierce left-foot strike from 10 yards, while Mancini dribbled past two players and saw his shot charged down by a third.

Yet the Sant'Elia was on its feet on 32 minutes when a corner found Michele Canini's header at the near post that shook the side netting and made it appear from some sections of the stadium that it had gone in.

Totti's free kick got a fingertip touch from Storari to turn it out for a corner and from that chaotic set piece the goalkeeper plucked a Philippe Mexes effort out of the air.

Ferrari's diving header from a corner was over, but in the final seconds of the first half Totti got an equaliser. His free kick bounced off the ground and Mancini didn't quite make contact, doing enough to confuse goalkeeper Storari as it slotted in at the near post.

After the restart Mancini rolled a corner across to Giuly and a shot straight at Storari's chest, but some dreadful defending from Ferrari allowed Robert Acquafresca a shot from six yards smothered by Doni.

Giuly flashed a shot across the face of goal and Acquafresca was crowded out by defenders. David Pizarro was booked for simulation and will be suspended against Genoa.

Alberto Aquilani replaced Matteo Brighi and with his first touch had a great chance to seal victory, a diving header turning Cicinho's cross off target. Aquilani nearly scored an absolute gem moments later, flicking the ball with a 'rabona' from six yards that brought a fantastic reaction save out of Storari. The rabona is when a player crosses his legs over and hits the ball with his back foot.

Rossi: We deserved victory
Saturday 29 March, 2008

Delio Rossi is cursing the crossbar for denying Lazio what he deems was a deserved victory against the leaders.

"We got off to a good start, but then conceded a goal on our mistake," he said of the 1-1 draw with Inter.

"In the second half with a little bit more luck we could easily have won this match."

Hernan Crespo had put the visitors in front with their first chance of the game, but Tommaso Rocchi equalised on the hour mark.

"Douglas Maicon did well on the Inter goal and it was a fast move, but Valon Behrami should have followed the run.

"I think Rocchi started his goal from an onside position, but then again I am biased! What I can complain about is Cristian Chivu's foul on Behrami that should have been a penalty."

Rossi admitted this week he hoped Inter would win the Scudetto and there was talk in the papers that Lazio would not put too much effort in, as a victory today would help rivals Roma close in on the title.

"We are a team who have always gone for the win, home or away, in Italy or Europe. I don't think it was fair to suggest beforehand we'd hold back, but it's part of the sport."

Ousmane Dabo was the second Lazio player to hit the bar and has been welcomed back with open arms after his brief spell at Manchester City.

"Dabo is one of the few who left here without biting the hand that fed them," added Rossi.

"He considers it an honour to play for Lazio. He also takes a bit of pressure off Cristian Ledesma in midfield on a tactical level."

its not over til its over, although i'm not really hopeful for it to be honest. smile.gif

well we juz got no luck at all laz nite. went down early by a Ferrari own goal, then good thing Totti was there to equalized for us. seriously Cagliari played like shit, n we were dominaing there, but somehow all those glorious chances that we hav juz wouldnt go in... i guess our 'opponent-GK-godlike-aura' is back to haunt us now. vmad.gif

well the funny part is that Inter merely escaped with a point against Lazio merda... lol so the gap remains, n the drama is still on. biggrin.gif

glad to hear that Roma played quite good because I couldn't watch the match.

too bad, Aquilani couldn't score with the backheel, cause it's technically more difficult than that of C.Ronaldo produced versus aston villa.

next opponent is Man Utd. I hope the players won't think about revenge. I just hope they play tactically rather than beautifully against them to get through to the next stage.

FORZA ROMA

well if that backheel went in it would surely be 1 of the highlights of the season, not to mention it could hav won us the game. oh well.

latest news now is that Totti is out of the MU match... dammit i hav to say this is gotta b real, as il Capitano was clearly injured n hurted during the laz match. we now only can rely on Vucinic. God help us all.

Totti to miss Man Utd
Sunday 30 March, 2008

Francesco Totti is out of Roma's quarter-final with Manchester United - and possibly the second leg too - with a thigh strain.

The captain had been struggling with a recurring knee problem this month and played in the 1-1 draw against Cagliari on Saturday with strapping to the area.

However, he was spotted clutching the back of his left thigh several times, although he continued to play until the final whistle.

The club has confirmed Totti has been diagnosed with a muscular strain and is out of Tuesday's Champions League clash with United.

If the extent of the injury is confirmed, there is the possibility he could also be ruled out of the second leg at Old Trafford on April 9.

It is also a heavy blow for the Giallorossi's Scudetto ambitions, as they are still four points behind Inter.

Meanwhile, the referee for the first leg at the Stadio Olimpico has been assigned by UEFA.

It is Belgian Frank De Bleeckere, the same official who sent off Marco Materazzi for two very harsh bookings in the first leg of Inter's tie with Liverpool.

now not only Totti, looks like Juan will probably not going to make it for the match too. this is really getting worse for us now.

it seem that the best bet for us now is our midfield combo of Aquilani n DDR... lets hope they make a big difference this time.

Spalletti: Time for revenge
Monday 31 March, 2008

Luciano Spalletti is eyeing revenge as his Roma side prepare to host Manchester United tomorrow night.

The Giallorossi were demolished by the Red Devils at this stage of the Champions League last term and were humiliated 7-1 at Old Trafford.

Having already crossed swords in the Group stages, the two sides have been drawn together again in the quarter-finals and Spalletti is relishing the prospect of vengeance.

"When I heard that we were playing Manchester United, I put my arms in the air and shouted: 'Yes, at last!'" Spalletti revealed.

"Finally we have the chance to put things right. This is the perfect opportunity for us to wipe out the memory of last year.

"We are taking this tie as a matter of pride. There is a moral here and that is that in life you always get a chance to make up for what happened in the past. This is our chance to find peace.

"We can reverse the pain we have had in our hearts and now we can free ourselves from it. We have carried this for a year now and we can get rid of it."

The result was a blot from the blue for the capital club during a successful campaign.

"It was the worst night of my career because of the result, even though I have seen the side perform worse," Spalletti insisted.

"I felt so much sadness for the players because they didn't deserve to lose so badly.

"Everything went right for United - they had 10 shots on target and seven went in. It was an anomaly.

"They were magnificent, but it was such a bitter experience for my players and it hurt the atmosphere at the club."

Roma have been dealt a blow with the news that Francesco Totti will miss out due to a thigh injury.

or maybe he has lost his coolness whistling.gif

let's hope Roma - without 10tti - can become an Arsenal...everybody thought they won't do any major damage without Henry but they perform really well...maybe Aquilani can become the next Fabregas brows.gif

it is now CONFIRMED that Totti n Juan are out of the game... big blow for us. i'm worry abt our defense line now as Juan is really, really a HUGE loss. Ferrari or Panucci (if he play as CB) juz cant give me much confident. Hope Mexes can step up his game.

speaking of Mexes, the past sunday was his birthday. Happy belated birthday n Forza Phillippe. smile.gif

Rome could lose 2009 final

Rome's Stadio Olimpico could lose the right to host the 2009 Champions League final if there were further violent incidents at Tuesday's quarter-final between AS Roma and Manchester United.

Stabbings by roving gangs armed with flick-knives happen often around the stadium, with violence flaring during United's last two visits to Rome.

There were also incidents at Roma's knockout round game with Real Madrid last month.

"If tomorrow at Roma-Manchester United, incidents are proved to have happened outside the stadium which are like those at the match with Real - with people stabbed - we would have to reconsider the decision to assign the 2009 Champions League final to Rome," UEFA spokesman William Gaillard said.[Read More]

UEFA issues Rome warning
Monday 31 March, 2008

Rome could lose the right to host the 2009 Champions League Final if there are violent scenes at tomorrow's Roma-Manchester United clash.

The last two times the sides have met at the Stadio Olimpico, there have been violent clashes outside the stadium and there were also injuries before Roma's last 16 game against Real Madrid.

Rome was awarded the Final in a meeting of UEFA's Executive Committee last Friday.

Certain groups in Rome have a reputation for causing trouble and UEFA could move 2009's showpiece event if they feel the supporters won't be safe in the Eternal City.

"If tomorrow at Roma-Manchester United there are incidents outside the stadium as happened against Real Madrid, where people were stabbed, we will have to reconsider the decision to assign the Final to Rome," UEFA spokesman William Gaillard is quoted by the ANSA news agency.

Such a decision would also be a disheartening sign as Italy campaign to replace Ukraine and Poland as the host nation for Euro 2012.

Spalletti: We can stop United
Tuesday 1 April, 2008

Luciano Spalletti is confident that Roma can shock Manchester United without Francesco Totti, but Alex Ferguson expects the Cristiano Ronaldo show.

The Giallorossi are looking to avenge last season's capitulation at this stage of the Champions League when the Red Devils destroyed them 8-3 on aggregate.

However, they will have to do so without star man Totti, who is injured and focusing on returning for the second leg.

"I have a lot of faith in the lads and I expect them to step up as they have in the past, but to an even greater extent," Spalletti insisted.

"It is an exaggeration to say that 90 per cent of the tie will be decided tonight when you remember that last year we lost 7-1 away.

"United have recognisable qualities, such as speed and ability on the counterattack.

"We are a more mature and experienced side than we were last year and the 7-1 helped us to grow, but we have to be balanced.

"I'm very disappointed that Totti won't be there for lots of reasons, but the fact that we have arrived here as a team suggests that the rest of the players are at this level.

"On paper, Ferguson's team is the strongest in the world and they can go out and but the best players in defence and attack.

"We aren't going out for revenge or looking to score seven goals but we want to show our quality while paying attention to theirs."

If Roma are to succeed, they will have to find a way to restrict the influence of Portuguese wizard Ronaldo.

"He is very strong from an athletic point of view and also technically - he is the complete player" Spalletti stressed.

*sigh*

there's isnt really much to say from the perspective of a Romanista. we were simply not good enough, outplayed and outperformed. we deserve to lose. in fact i think we were lucky to hav the scoreline kept as 0-2. sad.gif

i'm keeping the hope n faith, but realistically speaking, its end of Euro road for us.

anyway, Forza Roma.
