oh dammit, suddenly we found ourselves in some serious shit now.
Totti looks like not gonna back for any time soon, Juan n Perrotta are doubtful for 2molo match, while Aquilani n Ferrari might b out for a lengthy period...
Genoa is doing well currently, with Borriello on fire... but still we can beat them. Forza Roma !
Spalletti demands fighting spirit Friday 4 April, 2008
Luciano Spalletti has implored his Roma side to follow their fans' example and bounce back from defeat against Manchester United.
The Giallorossi were somewhat unfortunate to lose 2-0 to the Red Devils in Tuesday night's Champions League quarter-final first leg at the Stadio Olimpico. However, Spalletti still believes that his side can battle back, as long as they don't lose faith.
"We have to wait until after the second leg to analyse the game and we can learn from the fans," he said.
"After we went 2-0 down some players lowered their guard, but the supporters continued to cheer us on.
"We will go to Old Trafford to put in a ferocious performance and to secure qualification.
"From a motivational point of view, we have already started the job of bouncing back. "We never thought our objectives would be easy to achieve, as we know that there are potential pitfalls around every corner."
Roma must now turn their attentions to the Scudetto race and they host Genoa on Saturday afternoon needing a win to pile the pressure on leaders Inter.
Captain Francesco Totti hasn't recovered from injury in time to play and it seems that Alberto Aquilani will also miss out after damaging his foot in training on Thursday.
Former Juventus midfielder Matteo Brighi is ready to fill in alongside Daniele De Rossi.
Roma (probable): Doni; Cicinho, Mexes, Panucci, Tonetto; De Rossi, Brighi, Giuly, Perrotta, Mancini; Vucinic
While Juan is fit to face Genoa, Francesco Totti hopes he can recover in time for the second leg at Old Trafford.
Both players missed the 2-0 home defeat in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Manchester United on Tuesday along with the suspended Simone Perrotta.
Brazilian defender Juan has recovered quicker than expected and is in the Roma squad set to take on Genoa on Saturday. Totti has been struggling with a thigh strain, but was asked today whether he would be ready for next week's clash.
"I don't know. I hope to make it," the captain told fans waiting outside the Trigoria training ground.
There is no chance of seeing Matteo Ferrari at Old Trafford, as he underwent surgery to clean up a left knee injury today and will be out for at least a month.
Roma squad: Antunes, Aquilani, Brighi, Cassetti, Cicinho, Curci, De Rossi, Doni, Esposito, Giuly, Juan, Julio Sergio, Mancini, Mexes, Panucci, Perrotta, Taddei, Tonetto, Vucinic.
Roma 3 - 2 Genoa Taddei 13 (R), Vucinic 17 (R), Rossi 58 (G), Leon 59 (G), De Rossi pen 80 (R) Stadio Olimpico
Roma threw away a 2-0 lead in 60 seconds, but Daniele De Rossi's fierce penalty saw off Genoa 3-2 to pile pressure on Inter.
This was a tough week for the Giallorossi, who were held 1-1 at Cagliari and then defeated 2-0 at home by Manchester United in the Champions League quarter-final. Inter were still only four points away, but Francesco Totti, Alberto Aquilani, Matteo Ferrari and the suspended David Pizarro were sidelined. Meanwhile, Genoa had won two on the trot and had Capocannoniere Marco Borriello on fine form.
The Grifone's last Serie A victory here was 1-0 in January 1990, although they hadn't visited at all since 1994.
In the opening 50 seconds Mirko Vucinic turned on to the side-netting, then Daniele De Rossi fired a free kick inches over the bar. Rodrigo Taddei should have scored when he came charging in to meet a Ludovic Giuly pass, but blasted over from nine yards.
Taddei did open the scoring soon after. Max Tonetto got away down the left for a sweeping cross and although the Brazilian's first scuffed attempt was charged down, it fell back on to his foot and he could score from five yards.
Roma doubled their tally with an absolutely sensational strike four minutes later. Vucinic took his seasonal tally to five goals by flicking up a De Rossi pass with his back to goal, turning the defender and smashing a left-foot volley that dipped mercilessly into the far top corner! The finish from almost 20 metres was spectacular, especially as it was his weaker foot.
Alexandre Doni was at full stretch to pluck a Marco Borriello snapshot out of the air and Ivan Juric drilled wide, so Genoa were fighting back after that dreadful start. Danilo was stretchered off with a shin problem and made way for Julio Cesar Leon.
Giuseppe Sculli was allowed a free header from a corner kick that went wide, while Borriello nutmegged Philippe Mexes to test Doni. The Rossoblu were pouring forward towards the break and Marco Rossi wanted a penalty, but Christian Panucci seemed to get the ball.
Genoa continued to take control in the second half, as Doni smothered a Domenico Criscito daisy-cutter from 35 metres.
The visitors deservedly got back into it on 58 minutes. It was not entirely dissimilar to Taddei's first half goal. Fabiano cut back for Borriello, whose shot was parried by Doni into the path of the on-rushing Rossi.
Incredibly the game was completely turned around less than 60 seconds later! Roma were in shock as substitute Leon exchanged passes with Borriello and unleashed a precise rocket from the D to flash into the bottom far corner of the net.
There was also bad news for De Rossi, as he reached 13 bookings for the season. That means from now on he'll be suspended at every single yellow card rather than waiting for two.
Rubinho did well to smother the ball at Vucinic's feet and then beat away a fierce De Rossi attempt. The Genoa goalkeeper also had to backtrack quickly to fingertip a long Cicinho free kick out from under the crossbar. From the resulting corner there was a goalline clearance on Vucinic and Taddei was brought down by Borriello in a clumsy sliding tackle. To make matters worse, Borriello was booked and will miss next week's game with Torino.
De Rossi took over penalty taking duties and buried a powerful finish under the bar. His celebrations were ecstatic as he ran around the arena kissing his Roma jersey. Meanwhile, a nervous Totti in the stands shielded his eyes during the spot-kick.
The tension got to Gian Piero Gasperini, as the Genoa Coach was sent off in stoppages for dissent.
Spalletti admires Roma heart Saturday 5 April, 2008
Luciano Spalletti believes today's victory proved Roma have "real heart," but doubts Francesco Totti will be fit for Old Trafford.
The Giallorossi threw away a 2-0 lead in the space of 60 seconds, but a Daniele De Rossi penalty secured the 3-2 win over Genoa.
"We proved that we have real heart. After the equaliser my lads wiped everything off the slate and began again as if it was a whole new game," said the Coach.
"The result was fully deserved. We struggled, but Genoa play good football and are in great shape, so that was only to be expected. "In games like this not everything goes according to plan."
The 3-2 win closes the gap on Serie A leaders Inter to just one point and it will remain that way if the Nerazzurri lose away to Atalanta tomorrow.
"We are just going forward along our route and are not interested in what Inter do," assured Spalletti.
Totti was out of action for this tie with a thigh strain and although there is some hope he'll be back for Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final with Manchester United, the Coach isn't convinced.
"I would be happy just to have him back next Sunday."
w00t nice win there. we could hav won it more comfortably but we almost screwed things up. Thank God there is DDR !!!
got into a 2 goals lead early from Taddei n a wonder goal by Vucinic, we were then kinda slowed down... n WTF we let Genoa scored twice in the space of like 60 sec. shocking defending, the players should be ashamed of themselves. good thing that Taddei was fouled later on, n DDR smashed in the PK.
i'm not happy wif the performance, but still its a good thing to get all 3 points. now we'll see how Inter do against Atalanta.
Official: Totti misses Manchester Monday 7 April, 2008 Roma have named their squad for Wednesday's Champions League trip to Manchester United and Francesco Totti isn't on the list.
The Giallorossi need to produce something special at Old Trafford to reverse the 2-0 defeat from the first leg at the Stadio Olimpico last week.
However, the capital club's chances of pulling off one of Europe's greatest shocks have been severely dented by the news that inspirational captain Totti, who had to sit out the home fixture, will also miss the return game. Totti damaged his left thigh during the Lupi's Week 31 draw at Cagliari on March 29, but had hoped to return for the quarter-finals.
Luciano Spalletti will have to do without Er Pupone in Manchester, but he will be able to call upon Simone Perrotta, who was suspended for the first leg.
Montenegrin marksman Mirko Vucinic will lead the line with Amantino Mancini and Rodrigo Taddei likely to play behind in the trequartista position.
David Pizarro is favourite to stand in for Alberto Aquilani, as the Azzurri midfielder still isn't at 100 per cent. Juan could return to the team to replace Christian Panucci, who captained the side in the Olimpico fixture.
