Oh if that happens

Ill be looking forward to seeing Totti going back to his trequartista role

but honestly something tells me we have more of a chance landing Saha than Huntelaar

United are watching Vucinic so roma will likely be doing the old switch a roo
between Vuci and Saha

Serie A Week 22 - 9/2/08 (19.30 UK)

Roma 2 - 0 Reggina
Panucci 21 (Ro), Mancini 76 (Ro)
Stadio Olimpico

Roma were less than commanding, but managed to beat Reggina 2-0 with goals from Christian Panucci and Amantino Mancini.

Luciano Spalletti had to get his men back on track after the shock 3-0 thrashing at Siena that left them eight points adrift of Inter. Reggina's confidence was also hit by defeat to Torino after wins over Catania and Cagliari had pushed them away from the drop zone.

This fixture had never ended in a draw with five home wins and two Amaranto triumphs, most recently 2-1 in April 2005. The first chance fell to Reggina, Edgar Barreto's shot charged down by Christian Panucci in the box.

Roma fought back and former Giallorossi man Andrea Campagnolo flew to palm an Amantino Mancini strike out of the top corner of the net. A Francesco Totti header flashed Cicinho's cross just past the near post.

Panucci had been threatening with a couple of headers and finally got it on target after 21 minutes. The veteran defender was at the back post, practically on the byline, to nod Totti's cross over Campagnolo and into the far corner. It was an unusual finish, as it seemed to curl around the goalkeeper.

Alexander Doni smothered a Franco Brienza snapshot and Luca Vigiani looped over. Totti thought he'd scored one of the greatest goals of his career, but the overhead kick only hit the side-netting after Campagnolo flapped at a cross.

Totti went on a strong run and when he was closed down De Rossi's follow-up was deflected off target. The resulting corner was not dealt with an Totti didn't get enough contact to Alberto Aquilani's cross on a free header.

Aquilani risked scoring an own goal just before the break, as his scuffed clearance from a corner bounced inches past the near post.

Reggina introduced former Lazio striker Stephen Makinwa and immediately perked up, a long move eventually closed down by a diving Philippe Mexes intervention to stop Vigiani. Nicola Amoruso also came on for a trident attack and his glancing header on Francesco Modesto's cross was fingertipped round the far post.

Doni captured a fierce Maurizio Lanzaro strike and Ludovic Giuly created a chance for Aquilani. Mancini's thunderbolt whistled over the bar from 25 metres.

It was mainly Reggina in control now and Valdez nodded a powerful Barreto free kick past the near post. The Amaranto had equalised on 68 minutes with Barreto's rocket from distance, but the goal was correctly disallowed because it passed under Amoruso's foot and he was in a clear offside position.

Spalletti reassures anxious Roma
Saturday 9 February, 2008

Luciano Spalletti fears his Roma side lack confidence and Renzo Ulivieri berated his men for respecting their opponents too much.

The Giallorossi were under fire after their 3-0 demolition at Siena last week and struggled to a 2-0 win over Reggina this evening.

"Roma played a good game and deservedly won. There was a moment when the introduction of Stephen Makinwa and Nicola Amoruso pushed Reggina further up the field," explained Spalletti.

"Admittedly we were hesitant there and this is something that should not happen. We have character and quality, we just need to be aware of where we stand in the table."

It seems the Amaranto were all too aware of the differences between the teams, as in the first half they sat back far too much.

"We were sluggish, acting as if we had some sort of reverential fear of Roma," snapped Coach Ulivieri.

"In the second 45 minutes we saw that when we play ball to feet, we can put any team under pressure."

Makinwa made a stunning debut just days after joining from Lazio, as he only had one training session with his new teammates following African Cup of Nations duty with Nigeria.

"I couldn't field Makinwa from the start, seeing as I only met the lad on Friday."

Roma 2 - 0 Reggina

we won the match, but in fact we played very very poor. Reggina played with confident n spirit while we were like some amatuer 2nd rate team, despite we had most of the possession.

anyway, Panucci n Mancini did the tricks for us. Totti had a poor game, he looks like not fully fit yet. DDR was a monster there, dominating the midfield n keep us steady, a MOM performance.

its 3 points in the bag, but surely the team need to work harder next. Forza Roma !

Juan keeps Scudetto faith
Tuesday 12 February, 2008

Roma defender Juan still believes that the Giallorossi can catch Inter and win an unlikely title.

The capital club trail the Nerazzurri by eight points and few experts in the peninsula give Luciano Spalletti's men a chance of clawing their way back into Scudetto contention.

However, despite a costly defeat against Siena in Week 21, Juan is keeping the faith.

"We still think that we can do it," the Brazilian international insisted.

"Eight points is a big gap, but a comeback is possible given that the second half of the season has only just started.

"There are lots of games left and we won't be giving up - we will fight to the end."

With the Olympics looming in the summer, Juan was asked to comment on whether he could be one of Brazil's overage players in China.

"It's not that Roma that have harshly told me not to go," he said. "But I didn't get any holiday because of the Copa America and after the Olympics there are World Cup qualifiers to be played."

Spalletti: We don't fear Real
Thursday 14 February, 2008

Roma Coach Luciano Spalletti is expecting a tough battle against Real Madrid next Tuesday, but he doesn't see his team as outsiders.

The Giallorossi eased into the last 16 by finishing second to Manchester United in Group F, but must now negotiate the Spanish champions.

The tension is rising with players from both sides stressing their confidence, but Spalletti is keeping is cool
.

"Fear is too strong a word. We respect Real 100 per cent, but there isn't any fear," the Tuscan tactician insisted to Spanish newspaper Marca.

"This is a crucial time for us and it will be really good to take on Real in a competition like the Champions League.

"They are a side who will require a greater intensity and focus than any other opponents, but if we manage to play as a team we have a good chance to achieve something big."

Much of the build-up in Spain has centred on Francesco Totti and there have been suggestions that the Eternal City outfit are too dependent on their talismanic leader
.

"It's not just about Totti," Spalletti maintained. "He is the captain and a top player, but he is only as important as the others."

Spalletti concluded by discarding the underdogs tag that he feels in inaccurate.

"It is undeniable that Madrid have more experience and are more used to these kind of games than we are, but we will be so motivated. There are no favourites in this one," he said.

Roma's first priority is to get a positive result against Juventus in Turin this Saturday in Serie A's Week 23 crunch match.\

Mancini awaits Juve classic
Thursday 14 February, 2008

Roma forward Amantino Mancini is looking forward to taking on Juventus in Turin this Saturday.

The capital club travel north for a crucial showdown between second and third place and the stakes could hardly be higher.

While the Juve camp are confident of trimming the Giallorossi's lead over them to a single point, Mancini is also relishing the challenge.

"It is a direct battle for second spot and it will be a tough game," the former Venezia man told Studio Sport.

"The Bianconeri are a good side and they are growing, but the important thing is for us to win and bring home the three points.

"It is an exciting prospect, as we want to test our abilities and I'm certain that it will be a great game."

The title race may have sipped away from Luciano Spalletti's side, but Mancini is taking each game as it comes
.

"Eight points is a lot, but we have to get on with our own championship," he insisted.

"We know that chasing Inter is hard because they are so good, but we just need to win as many games as possible."

Mancini concluded with a thought for injured compatriot Ronaldo, whose career is in jeopardy.

He is an idol for me," the 27-year-old said. "I am very sad at his situation and I hope that he can heal. He is a player I always enjoying watching on the pitch."

Totti: Juve-Roma is the ultimate
Saturday 16 February, 2008

Francesco Totti looks ahead to tonight's Juventus-Roma showdown and sees it as "bigger than the Rome derby."

The rivalry between these two sides has been intense for many years and this season they are battling for second place.

"It will always be Juve-Roma, both for the players and the fans," the Giallorossi captain told Sky Italia.

"It is a different game to all the others because, for some, Juve-Roma is more important than Roma-Lazio."

There is another rivalry on show in Turin this evening, as Totti is battling David Trezeguet to retain the Capocannoniere title.

"I have many more games at my disposal and hope I can get back to my best without all these niggling injuries that affect my form.

"If I return to the form of last term or the start of this season, I can challenge anyone."

Totti won the Golden Boot in 2007 as the top scorer in all European League competition, something Trezeguet has never managed.

"I don't think he's jealous! I know him as a person, he is very kind and we get on well.

"I am also friends with Gigi Buffon and sent him a text message of congratulations when his son was born. When we meet up I can give him some advice on dealing with babies, seeing as I have the clear advantage," joked the father of two.

Spalletti keeps Juve focus
Friday 15 February, 2008

Roma's Luciano Spalletti refuses to enter into any controversy ahead of tomorrow's showdown with Juventus. "We're getting on with our season."

Inter transfer guru Gabriele Oriali incensed Roma fans by responding sarcastically to the recent refereeing controversy.

"Is it our fault if Roma lost 3-0 to Siena? " he sneered. "They lack oxygen when they get too high."

However, Spalletti opted not to fight fire with fire and is calm ahead of the Giallorossi's second v third clash in Turin.

"Siena was a missed opportunity, but I'll let other people think what they like," the Tuscan boss said.

Francesco Totti has been quoted as stressing his belief that referees have been favouring Inter subconsciously, but Spalletti played down his captain's comments.

"I don't think that his interview was reported accurately because I told the players to stay silent," he revealed.

"There have been two or three occasions in which the evidence speaks for itself - photographs don't lie.

"When we won, we won and when we lost, we lost, but nobody has taken anything from us
.

"We are getting on with our campaign quietly and we don't want to get involved in what happens to others.

"This Juve game could be considered a play-off for second place. Will I settle for second spot this year? Yes, but that doesn't mean that we are ruling out trying to get first."

When the two sides met in Week 4, the capital club seemed to be set for maximum points before a late Vincenzo Iaquinta equaliser made it 2-2.

"Since the first game we have been working on our problems and have made visible improvements," Spalletti insisted.

"But obviously they are still a dangerous side as they have players like Alessandro Del Piero, David Trezeguet and Pavel Nedved.

"Claudio Ranieri has the advantage of being able to prepare for the game specially and we will face a pumped up team.

"This Bianconeri team is as strong as it was before and to come through such a tough period to reach this level so quickly earns them a lot of credit."

There have been suggestions in the media that Roma may be distracted by their Champions League clash against Real Madrid next Tuesday.

"Are we thinking about Real? No, the players know that the game against Juve is crucial," Spalletti stated.

There is no rest for the Lupi as they face Fiorentina and Inter after Real in a crucial month.

"We have a period coming up that could see us reap the rewards of all the good work we have done over the last three years," the Roma Coach concluded.

Roma (probable): Doni; Panucci, Mexes, Juan, Tonetto; De Rossi, Pizarro, Taddei, Perrotta, Mancini; Totti

Juventus 1-0 Roma

TURIN, February 16 (Serie A) - Alessandro Del Piero scored a stunning free-kick just before half-time to down Roma in the chase for second place in Serie A.

The 33-year-old demonstrated his credentials for Euro 2008 selection with his powerful dead ball strike from 20 yards which clipped the post on its way to beating Brazilian keeper Doni.

Roma were denied by both the post and Juve keeper Gianluigi Buffon in search of an equaliser and are now just one point ahead of their Turin rivals, and 11 adrift of runaway leaders Internazionale.

Claudio Ranieri's side were full of confidence heading into the game and created the first chances.

The impressive Del Piero won a second-minute corner off Daniele De Rossi, and his delivery caused havoc in the penalty area until Roma hacked the ball away.

De Rossi had got in the way of a strong Pavel Nedved shot from over 20 yards out as Roma weathered the early storm.

Roma's first chance came on 18 minutes, Mancini hitting an 18-yard shot which deflected dangerously off Francesco Totti but Cristian Molinaro managed to clear.

The Turin side, who are now unbeaten in 14 Serie A games, continued to pose an attacking threat and great vision from Nedved's searching lob for Jonathan Zebina was just a little too long.

David Trezeguet passed into Vincenzo Iaquinta on 39 minutes, who turned with the ball 10 yards out and volleyed towards goal, but Doni produced a great reflex save to his left.

The Brazilian goalkeeper was unable to stop Del Piero's effort, but Roma almost struck back seconds later in first-half injury time.

Taddei crossed a low ball in from the right, and though Simone Perrotta could not connect, Totti was there to strike against the post.

Roma continued to dominate possession, passing well but unable to create many incisive chances.

Zebina took a 20-yard shot for Juve on 57 minutes that barely flew over, before two headers from centre-back Philippe Mexes on 63 and 71 minutes missed the target, the first just skimming the crossbar.

With 13 minutes to play, Buffon had to keep out De Rossi's long-range free-kick from 30 yards, a fierce left-footed strike which the Italy number one dived to his right to save from the top corner.

Juve dominated the remaining minutes but were unable to extend their lead.

A wayward Del Piero shot from over 20 yards fell kindly for Iaquinta, who deflected the ball just wide on 81 minutes.

Del Piero then swung a free-kick from 25 yards out on target, but Doni was alert and made a diving save for a corner with six minutes to play.

The Juve number 10 managed to create one final chance in injury time from a set-piece, his dangerous crossed free-kick from 35 yards just evading the efforts of Nicola Legrottaglie to score

Taddei: We're in trouble
Sunday 17 February, 2008

Roma stars Philippe Mexes and Rodrigo Taddei admit they need a Plan B after opponents unlocked the key to their tactics.

"I am truly upset, we are playing very badly. I have to shake myself up too, because I cannot continue like this," said a furious Mexes after last night's 1-0 defeat to Juventus.

The Giallorossi are now 11 points off leaders Inter and just one in front of the Bianconeri, but there is a wider problem to be dealt with.

This season it has become evident that when Roma do not play to their full potential, they find it almost impossible to grind out results in the same way as the other big sides.

"It is a time in which things are going badly for me, but perhaps the whole team is not performing up to its usual standards," added Taddei.

"In attack, especially, we have got to do something more, as our opponents know us by now.

"Francesco Totti, Amantino Mancini and myself cannot keep playing like this. We have to improve our performances if we want to win again."

Morale is at an all-time low ahead of the Champions League crunch match with Real Madrid.

Spalletti plays down Roma row
Monday 18 February, 2008

Roma tactician Luciano Spalletti has denied that there is any friction at Trigoria ahead of tomorrow's Champions League test against Real Madrid.

There have been reports in the peninsula's Press that Giallorossi stars Alberto Aquilani and Christian Panucci exchanged insults after Roma's defeat against Juventus and that tensions spilled over on the training ground yesterday.

However, Spalletti insists that the stories are exaggerations and that his side are calm and focused on defeating the Merengues.

"In three years here there have been few problems because the lads are always well behaved," the Tuscan Coach stated.

"This time I don't think that it is necessary to talk about it as a drama. The players were just disappointed after the defeat against Juventus and were a bit tense.

"It can happen that a few words and a gesture can be taken in a certain way, but things were contained and the moment has passed."

Roma are in poor form as they face the Spanish champions after a defeat against Juventus that has seen them fall 11 points behind leaders Inter.

"The game against Real Madrid is the perfect chance to bounce back," Spalletti claimed.

"When you are going through a period like this and you get a game of this importance it gives you a chance to send a clear message to everyone.

"Real worry me as a squad. Bernd Schuster is a great Coach and they played well even in their latest defeat.

"The ease with which they get forward is a concern and they really attack and defend as a team.

"The lads will do their best to get a result. Maybe Schuster is happy with a draw because he will have home advantage, but I believe in my team and I think that I will get a reaction," Spalletti concluded.
