Pindad’s Komodo 4×4 outfitted with 120 mm mortar

The Indonesian Pindad Komodo 4×4 light armoured vehicle has been fitted with a 120 mm smoothbore version of the Brazilian Ares Recoil Mortar System (RMS) for trials purposes.

The four-door protected cab positioned in the middle of the Komodo is retained, and the 120 mm RMS is mounted on a power-operated turntable on the flatbed. It can also be fitted with an 81 mm mortar barrel, which could be used for training purposes as it has a shorter range and fires lower-cost ammunition than its 120 mm counterpart.

The 120 mm RMS has a fully automatic powered operating laying system with manual back up, and is integrated with a mortar fire control system (MFCS) that is embedded with an inertial navigation system (INS) and an onboard ballistic computer. This is meant to enable the system to come into action quicker, carry out a fire mission, and then redeploy.

If required, it can be integrated with a higher echelon command-and-control system and be linked to mortar fire controllers/forward observation officers (MFC/FOO) or a fire direction centre (FDC).

The 120 mm mortar’s range depends on the projectile/charge combination, but firing an unassisted high-explosive (HE) mortar bomb it is typically 7,000 m.

The number of mortar bombs carried depends on the size of the platform, but could be up to 70. Its maximum rate of fire is up to 16 rds/min, and it is designed to come into action and fire its first round within about 60 seconds and then rapidly move to another firing position.

The 120 mm RMS weighs 1,200 kg and can also be installed on larger 6×6 or 8×8 armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs) and tracked AFVs, in which case it would be typically mounted in the rear of the platform and fired through open roof hatches.

Stricken Norwegian Frigate Has Almost Completely Sunk After Its Anchor Wires Snapped

It is increasingly unlikely that Norway's navy will be able to put the ship, which collided with an oil tanker last week, back in service.

BY JOSEPH TREVITHICK
NOVEMBER 13, 2018

The Royal Norwegian Navy's frigate Helge Ingstad has almost completely sunk in the waters near the Sture oil and gas terminal outside of Bergen Norway. Norwegian authorities insist they still intend to salvage the warship, which suffered serious damage and was intentionally ran aground after colliding with the oil tanker Sola on Nov. 8, 2018, but the vessel's future looks increasingly bleak.

On Nov. 13, 2018, Rear Admiral Nils Andreas Stensoenes, head of Norway's navy, disclosed that multiple steel wires anchoring the Fridtjof Nansen-class frigate to the shore had snapped overnight. At present, only a portion of ship's main mast, which holds its advanced AN/SPY-1F radar, a key component of its version of the Aegis Combat System, along with a small portion of the rear superstructure, remain above the waterline. On Nov. 11, 2018, the Norwegian Armed Forces, or Forsvaret, had said the ship was "stable." Over the weekend, workers had also added two additional anchor wires between the vessel and the shore, for a total of seven.

a good read on how the accident happened

the tanker can see the warship even with its AIS turned off and pleads on the radio for the warship to turn
but the warship somehow cannot see the tanker heading towards it and only turned "a little bit" (even then they turned the wrong way) after hearing the tanker's radio

so meaning navy stealth technology only for tayang.... as the tanker has more stealth capability than a stealth navy ship... somemore equipped with AEGIS system.. LOL

From radar PPI, ships were navigating closer to the west side of that channel.... could be shallow on that part, instead.....she can choose to reduce speed or stop.

One pilot dead in T-38 crash at Laughlin

user posted image

QUOTE
One pilot has died in a T-38 training aircraft Tuesday night at Laughlin Air Force Base in Texas.

In a post on its Facebook page, Laughlin said that the other pilot has been transferred to Val Verde Regional Medical Center. The names of the pilots will be released after their next of kin have been notified.

Laughlin said a board of officers will be convened to investigate the crash.

Another T-38C Talon crash in November 2017 resulted in the death of one of its two pilots.
