When I was browsing for apps on my Samsung Smart TV, I notice a new apps HBO Go was added just recently, it wasn't there recently
but I couldn't download it, gave me some sort of server error

So, out of curiosity, I check out the local asia HBO Go sites, hbogoasia.com
MY not on the list, only HK, Indo, Ph & SG available

but pinging hbogoasia.com.my and hbogoasia.my returns successful pings of 72.52.10.14
which differs from the IP ping results of other country servers

HBO taking the .MY domain name is understandable, it's to prevent cyber squatting,
but also put a server/device behind it that returns ping? hmm.gif
something is going on, I highly suspect HBO Go is going to launch in Malaysia very soon.
Hopefully my speculation is true thumbup.gif

Update 22/5/2019
It's official, but you need to have Astro Movie pack subscription in order to access the full content

You can now download the HBO Go app

Malaysians with an Astro Movies Pack subscription can finally download the HBO Go app and watch shows and movies on the move.

The app is available on both the Google Play and Apple App stores, and the service is also accessible via the website www.hbogoasia.my.

Users will be able to watch HBO original series like Game Of Thrones, The Wire, Veep and Westworld, as well as Hollywood movies, documentaries and cartoons.

Previously, selected HBO content was available through the Astro Go app and website.

HBO Go allows users to download up to 20 shows for offline viewing and the app supports Airplay and Chromecast for streaming content to a bigger screen. Users can also view HBO Go on two concurrent streams.

Astro says in a press statement that the content will be offered in full HD if available.

Non-Astro Movies pack subscribers will only be able to view content under the Without Registration tab. However, they will be limited to 40-second preview clips, behind the scenes featurettes and trailers for upcoming shows.

To gain access to the full library, they will have to commit to an Astro Movies Pack subscription which starts from RM71.95 for the Movies Bundle package. The subscription includes HBO, Cinemax and Fox Movies.

New users will also have to pay a one-time installation fee of RM199, which will be reduced to RM99 if they agree to a 24-month contract. The offer comes with a HD decoder.

finally found the hbo go malaysian apk, downloaded it from the playstore on pc by using a chrome extension

sideloaded it on my shield

However immediately after the login screen (either login using astro id or a guest) the app will crash automatically
Tried screen rotation app, change keyboard settings (like astro go) but to no avail. tried both internal and external storage as well

The app is not in androidtv playstore, may need extra work like astrogo, maybe need a modified version.

I could install direct from playstore in my box, got it running but my id/pw was not allowed since it needs to have movies pack subscription.

Anyway, i could browse it, quality looks good, hd like netflix.

There is live hbo hd channel too, and download options.

Will have to get some other id to use it...

HBO Now is similar to Netflix, it's not tied to any cable/Sat TV subscription
Content also similar to HBO Go as well, IINM it's without the live TV but has more 18+ content brows.gif
but it's only available in US dry.gif

been doing that since monkey years ago tongue.gif
but using VPN sometimes it's a hit & miss, it would be nice to stream it locally at full speed

But if you already has Astro, just a add-on of RM26.50 for Movie pack monthly, I would say it's one the cheapest high quality streaming service in M'sia for the moment.

The HBO app works on my phone but it does not work on my tv box. Seems like stuck constantly. Login with keyboard difficult and video playback image does not show up properly. Can hear voice only and some patches of garbage on screen.

Only work stream is the live TV stream.

Anyway the app is a phone app, it is difficult to use on tvbox.

Disappointed with HBO and Astro, always release TV unfriendly apps.

Yes my box can do astro Go but not hbo Go. I have root, but hide it using Magisk. Could be it tried to play using certain frequency and resolution not supported by my old TV.

we really have little idea until we hear others using other boxes have success or failure.

i could get into the UI and browse with my 2 boxes but haven't got any video playing - no movies pack.

will try to get that and try again.

one thing, i tried (and 2 others already said too) - AndroidTV - it crashes after log in screen, can't even browse.

Yeah possibly they purposely crippled the app for TV.

The play store mentioned using mirror or cast to play on TV. It works, but I hate using mirroring as it gives bad image from time to time. Irritating.

The 'HBO Go Malaysia' downloadable from play store. It's a different app from the HBO Go ( US ).

Just be aware that the initial download is damn slow. Almost make people think download is not working. LOL.

I don't think you can use the US account to log on to this HBO Go Malaysia.
