How To Save A Wet Mobile Phone ? 1. Get it out of the water as soon as possible. The plastic covers on cell phones are fairly tight, but water can enter the phone over time. But this time may be quite short - 20 seconds or less. So grab your phone quickly! 2. Remove the battery. This is one of the most important steps. Don't take time to think about it; electricity and water do not mix. Cutting power to your phone is a crucial first step in saving it. Many circuits inside the phone will survive immersion in water provided they are not attached to a power source when wet.3. Remove your SIM card. Some or all of your valuable contacts (along with other data) could be stored on your SIM. To some people this could be more worth saving than the phone itself. SIM cards survive water damage well, but some of the following steps are unnecessary i.e. don't heat it. Just pat it dry and leave it aside until you need to connect your phone to your cellular network. 4. Dry your phone. Obviously you need to remove as much of the water as soon as possible, so you can prevent it from getting into the phone. Use a towel or paper towel to remove as much of the water as possible.5. Allow the phone to dry. Since you do not want to ruin your phone or lose all of the numbers in your phone book, you need to allow the phone to dry. Also, ringtones and graphics stay with the phone - not the SIM. Don't try putting the battery back on to see if it works as this would risk damaging the phone with a short circuit. 6. Wait. This is the hardest part - leaving your phone alone, with battery and SIM card out, while it dries slowly. Tricks like leaving your phone in a bowl of dry rice will help to expedite moisture evaporation. They might also have side effects like getting rice in your phone. Just put it someplace reasonably warm and dry, uncovered so water can evaporate, and wait. 7. Test your phone. After you have waited 3 days, make sure everything is clean and dry looking and re-attach the battery to the phone and see if it works. If your phone does not work, wait another few days. If it still won't work, try taking your cell phone to an authorized dealer. Sometimes they can fix it. Alternate Alcohol Soak Method (not recommended if u donno wat u are doin)Dry your phone by soaking it in alcohol or distilled water. This method is controversial and considered risky by some, but the proponents believe in it strongly. Using alcohol is more effective than distilled water because not only does it displace the water and sediments, it also evaporates faster with less residue. It will not harm a mobile phone. Preferably, use denatured alcohol or a 95% alcohol solution. Denatured alcohol may be purchased at any hardware store and is used to clean electronics because it evaporates quickly and leaves no residue. You should check to see what the alcohol is denatured with. If it is anything other than methanol (some are denatured with very hazardous chemicals such as methyl ethelyne ketone [MEK]) you should not use it, as some denaturants can melt plastics. Most drugstores or larger retailers carry 91% rubbing alcohol. Regular rubbing alcohol is only 70% and is not recommended. Distilled water also displaces water and is a viable alternative because it is non-conductive. Prolonged exposure to other liquids will cause corrosion of the copper traces within the mobile phone, and will most likely cease its operation. The less risky ways to dry your phone 1. Set it on top of the vent of a cable box, monitor or TV for at least 24 hours (up to 3 days). The low heat emitted is enough to gently dry out the phone.
2. The longer your phone is wet the more likely it is to be damaged. To dry your phone more quickly than room temperature air can manage, immerse it in a can of dry, uncooked rice. The rice will absorb excess moisture, drying your phone from the inside out.
3. An alternate drying technique is to seal the phone (battery, SIM card, SD card all removed) in a plastic bag with a few of the silica packs that come packed with shoes, coats, electronics. Leave the phone in the bag for a day or 2, and the silica packs will absorb the moisture.
4. One other way to assist in the drying process is to put your cell phone in a disposable baby diaper. Works for babies and can work for the cell phone as well. TIPS * Don't put the battery in for at least three days, or longer if your digital screen is foggy.
* If your phone falls in the ocean or other salt water, rinse with fresh water before crystals can form after removing battery.
* Try opening your phone if you can. You'll probably need a TORX screwdriver for that, but it's worth it. This may void your warranty, but it is likely the water damage already has.
* It is likely that the dunk in water will kill the battery. The phone itself usually survives.
* Corrosion is a threat. You may want to consider soaking your phone in distilled water to wash away any minerals it picked up from the original water. WARNINGS # Don't heat the battery or it could leak or explode.Lithium-ion batteries are sensitive. If you use an oven or hairdryer, make sure to remove the battery first.
# If you use alcohol make sure to do so outside, and do not apply heat in any form, not even the gentle heat of a monitor. Do not hook up the battery till the alcohol smell dissipates.
# Do not apply too much heat to your phone, as mentioned above. You don't want to melt or burn your phone.
# Most modern phones have more than one liquid damage indicator (stickers that change color when wet) on them, only one visible to you (and sales/technician agents), and chances are, if the sticker under the battery is triggered, then the odds are that the internal stickers you can't access are tripped as well. This will still result in you paying a voided-warranty fee in the long run. Warranties don't cover water damage, insurance does. And not all insurance companies or plans will honor water damaged phones.
# Even if all these steps are followed, minerals dissolved in the water can precipitate on solder and component pins, causing corrosion or shorting. Components pins are packed so closely together in a modern cell phone that even a small encrustation can create a short, rendering the phone inoperable.
# Be warned that manufacturers place stickers that will display "void" once peeled and some will change colors in the presence of a liquid (usually turns blue or red). This helps techs know that you have dropped it in the water, as most cell phone insurance coverage policies don't cover water damage. Also note that these stickers have been known to change colors in extreme humidity as well.
# Do not put the phone (or any electronic or metal-containing object) into the microwave. You will destroy electronic components and potentially the microwave.

I often bring my E398 to the bathroom when i'm in hostel (afraid of being stealed and to listen to music when i'm bathing in the night. My hostel is so sunyi one) and several times water got inside it. When it happened, my keypad cannot be used. only the on/off button works.I remove the battery for 24 hours, and it's back to normal,hehe..now my phone is immune to the water

btw... if u want to imerse it in water/alcohol or dry it in a microwave oven.. remember to take out the LCD screen... the screen will be dead if water enters it same goes to heat but it should be able to stand the heat of a hairdryer though...hehe... Open the cover take out the battery and wait it to dry off. Restart the system only everything is dry. Evaluate for the phone for faulty parts. Within warranty, phone ur vendors. No warranty and faulty, start saving to buy new one....

QUOTE(rayzrblade @ May 19 2007, 10:56 PM) How To Save A Wet Mobile Phone ?
Thanks to : wikihow Actually, the simple way to save youe water damage gadgets is sent to the service center after u take off the battery. More time u wait the short circuit risk will more higher.

There's a sticker on the battery (pinkish in colour on SE batteries). The same type of sticker can be found in the phone's battery compartment. When the phone or battery has had any water damaged. the sticker turns to red.

i had an old school Panasonic phone which looked like one of those Japanese DoCoMo phones (unfortunately i cannot recall the model number) I dropped it at my house compound and it landed on the grass while it was raining heavily. I found the phone after an hour and it managed to work perfectly well after blow drying it using a hair blower. It was a rise of the dead!! haha. But oh well, maybe i was just in luck.

I think the 'take out the battery' part is definitely most important... ... because from what I know, water won't do much damage to the internal circuit of an electronic device without the power source... Just remember that it is only when there is power can a short-circuit occur. ... or I could be wrong, haha, just sharing what I think I know... I once had my iPod washed, rinsed and spinned in the washing machine (accidentally, of course), and iPods have internal batteries, so I couldn't take it out... I could even see obvious water marks INSIDE the screen... But after it was dried and recharged, it worked perfectly!

Hi guys, recently my hp fell into water, but not for long, i quickly took it out but i did not take out the battery. Now my hp can on, but the problem is, it keeps detecting that a cable is connected to the pc and i cant use the phone. Btw, my phone model is SE w300i. Anyone knows how to fix this?
Thanks.

Okay i couldn't find my handphone last night so i decided to find it tomorrow morning, when i woke up, i found it downstairs, and when i held it, it was wet. Apparently it went for a spin last night in the washing machine and the power was on. Now it's off and there's water INSIDE the screen, and of course, i took out my SIM and batteries. Any comments?

Any comments? your phone is as good as dead, repair would mean u'd need to replace your battery, flex assemblies, hinge (slide or flip models), LCD, PCB, keyfoils, and other modules that your phone may have. it'll cost u a bomb, beyond economical repair, so it's time for u to get a new phone, cheers... edit: u could try immersing it in 95% alcohol though, like "Isopropyl Alcohol", u could fairly get a can from hardware shop cheaply, but just get a small bottle. wont guarantee that your phone could be revived. hehe. i do juz like u told but still problem.. then i open the housing myself.. suddenly lcd problem.. no view at all.. at last i juz send to shop.. and he say if not bad will charge me rm2++ but if too bad will cost me rm3++.. then after a month the repair centre say a lot of thing need to replace.. then i juz ttake my own moves.. i take back my phone and let it be juz like that for a few days.. den i go to lowyat to search for lcd.. and i open my phone and change it myself.. and wat i get.. i got back my phone juz like before.. no rpoblems.. in my hearts saying wat a stupid repair centre.. so i suggest if got problem like water damage better take off the battery and sim card.. the dry it.. and dont using it for a week.. patience is important in this process if u wan ur phone back on.. =D

Here's a few more tips base on my personal experience and reading:
1) If you cannot take your phone apart, DO NOT blow through the ports/holes of your wet phone with a hairdryer, or anything similar. You are only forcing the humid into the deeper parts of the components and end up causing more damages. Instead, use a vacuum to evacuate as much humid as possible. (eg: some phone/gadget uses special screws that can only be opened by special screwdrivers).
2) You should not let your phone dries up naturally if you failed to take the phone apart, the humid inside can stay for quite some time and may start rusting the components.
3) If you cannot find any silica packs, or uncooked rice to have your phone sealed with. Don't think, run to the nearest supermarket and get yourself a "Thirsty Hippo", open it up and seal it in a box/cabinet with your phone, it works, if not much better.

But if you wanna be safe, take out the battery/memory card, seal it with some silica gels or a thirsty hippo, or bury it in uncooked rice overnight.

Put inside the car, but not under direct sunlight for 1 week. Wah lah... everything as normal. Smell wise, not that I can smell anything but psychologically you will have all the shit next to you

Hi, . Hope you can help me out here…got a P910i sony ericsson and it went for a swim. Left it to dry as per recommendation and left the phone alone for 2 weeks!!!..hahaah but it was okay and glad I resisted to check my phone then, since it can switch on after….. . But yesterday I tried to switch the phone on again, then nothing happened…tried to charge it as well but nothing happen, no lights, blinking etc. suspecting it to be my battery but even with/without out battery and plug the charger phone still cannot switch on. . Anyone can help??? Also would be good if anyone can advice me how to retrieve back the info on the phones i.e. numbers, pictures etc….any shops specialized in this and how much would it cost? Anyone has done this before? . Thanks

I used to put electronics in open air to dry up as much as possible, and if still have problem i will Seal them in Plastic Bags and put them in the freezer.
After 1-2 days it should be working if the circuit hasn't been shorted. Works on phone displays too.

I have a fren whose N81 gone kaput went his phone dropped into the sea. He dried his phone but few days later, metal parts of the phone started to oxidize. Only later then we heard that if a phone drops into salty water, the best bet is to dip the phone in distilled water to wash out the salt. How true is this? Has anyone tried this method before?

Happen to me before.. Few years back when I just bought my NK7610.
I suggest you guys to dry it with hair dryer.. Let it blown for 1 hour(min). With cold air not hot air..
NOTE = Hot air will damage your circuit and LCD!
Added on March 24, 2009, 5:52 pmThere is no such thing as water resistant circuit.. =x

Hi peeps! I know this is a very very old thread but I feel this thread is really useful as most of us, intentionally or unintentionally wet our mobile phone. And now with smartphones which are way more vulnerable to humidity/water than the classic nokia handphones, we need this piece of info even more. Something new on solution for a wet mobile phone: My friend studying in the States actually introduced some dry-your-phone kit to me once when I dropped my S3 in the toilet (not into the toilet bowl though, phew!), just onto the super wet, almost flooded bathroom floor. But I couldn't find it anywhere in Malaysia and waiting for it to arrive from US is just not practical. Luckily my S3 survived the swim but I keep on wondering if there's such dry-your-phone kit available. Just in case, you never know when your phone decides to take another swim in the water. Anyway I forgot what is the brand of the kit that my friend introduced to me but these are some of the images that I can find online. Any sifus in the forum can provide info? I'm interested to test them.

basic procedure as follows
1 do not attempt to operate the phone 2 remove all removable items - back cover, battery, SIM, memory card 3 if dropped in unclean or salty water, do the unthinkable - rinse the phone body under running cold water 4 shake or drip dry 5 place in a bowl and cover with rice grains, then leave it for a few days in a dry place

Nowadays the smartphone is so fragile and each second counts when trying to dry the phone. That's why when my S3 kena water, my friend suggested a faster way to dry it using some kind of dry-your-phone kit. I tried to scout around but couldn't find it in Malaysia. The last time I went to Low Yat Plaza, I couldn't find similar kit that can dry your phone faster than household remedies like putting into the rice or silica gel, use hairdryer or the controversial alcohol solution.

Previously I was looking for some kind of dry-your-phone-kit in stores and online in Malaysia after my friend from the States intro them to me. But I couldn't find it anywhere so I asked my pal to send a few samples all the way from the States just to try it. And now, I have finally received them! At the back of the packaging, there is a moisture indicator (white box) that tells you if your phone is dry already or not. Apparently this is a one-time use kit. Inside the kit, there is a paper with instructions and one drying pack. The red arrow is showing the drying pack. Gonna start testing once I get unused phone from my sis. Anyone interested to try?
