Interested to know how you run your rig.

BIOS overclocked means that your overclocking is set in BIOS.
Windows overclocked means that your overclocking is done with windows apps (BIOS settings are normal)

Information required is as above. Also please include:

If running 24/7, rig use for what purpose?
e.g. downloading P2P, folding, don't mind wasting electricity or rig run as a heat generator!

If running 24/7 + BIOS OC 24/7:
Don't you think this will reduce the life-span of your rig??? sweat.gif
Especially when only doing BT!!!
Why not OC when required? See Advance guide to OC - BIOS OC but windows C&Q

My rig:
Switched on only when at home
---Reason : Nobody at home
Normal use most of the time
Windows overclocked when playing games or need CPU power

Same as sHawTy running two rigs, first it's what you call a BT rig and second a Gaming rig.

BT rig : 24/7 switched on, normal use no overclocking.

Reason : For BTing and normal surfing. A rig with a 800Mhz processor with at least 256MB memory is already suffice. No lag and no need to overclock either. It's cheap and one can use back previous old computer parts to build one. Power consumption has to be low since running 24/7, so must be minimalist set (e.g. no floppy, cd-rom, add-on card and etc...). File transfer using network or usb pen drive. And lastly you won't be afraid of lightning spike or virus infection either since this is a minimalist al-cheapo set.

Gaming rig : Switched on only when needed, 24/7 bios overclocked.

Reason : Since this is a gaming rig no point to switch on when not needed (damm power hungry!). Bios is overclocked 24/7 and fine tune for gaming purposes.

Hmmm... a lot of forumers doing 24/7 on + 24/7 BIOS overclock.

Question (added in first post):
1) Don't you think doing the above will reduce the life-span of your rig?
2) Especially when you are only doing BT!!!! sweat.gif
3) Why not overclock when needed? e.g. when BT, use C&Q so less power consumption; when gaming/folding/CPU intensive apps, then only OC..... hmm.gif

Answer to question 1
Any electronic component has a lifespan say x number of years. This means x years for the user to have it powered on. If you leave it on without using it you are basically using up this lifespan needlessly. And overclocking will increase the rate that the lifespan is used up because the parts are being stressed beyond the normal operating conditions. Expect your PC to either fail or have marginal (unstable) behaviour sooner than a normal PC would.

Totally agree, further to that not many people know that not all PC components are made to run 24/7 especially those less branded ones which are fitted with lower grade components which have a shorter lifespan and higher failure rate. In my opinion, actually only server grade PC component are meant to run 24/7.

enabling CNQ while folding is like pointless, while I think enabling CNQ in BIOS is far more safer than using user-apps to modify HTT value. I sense that some ppl here just OC for the sake of gaming rite? hmm.gif

True, but after you've done OC, you have nothing to do already. Why not then control you OC in windows. OC when needed, C&Q when idle/BT/surfing.....

Rig A

System : as my siggy said sleep.gif 24/7; 365; BIOS Overclocked
Reason : gaming, overclocking adventure, folding, testing hardware to the max
in BIOS overclock, C&Q is useless tongue.gif

Rig B
System : old PIII, 24/7; 365; no-overclock
Reason : i can't overclock sad.gif, torrenting, word processing, music jukebox tongue.gif
