How to enjoy Astro Ulti Box or Ultra Box on your HDCP 1.4/2.2 unsupported TVs
If you want to know what exactly HDCP 1.4 or HDCP 2.2 is about, please search it on Google.

But all you need to know is:
Astro's HD and UHD channels/content is HDCP copyright protected (as it's mandatory by industry standards worldwide), so you need to make sure your TV supports HDCP 1.4 to watch HD channel/content, and HDCP 2.2 for UHD channel/content.
In simple English: HDCP 1.4 required for Ulti Box/HD/PVR boxes, while HDCP 2.2 required for Ultra Box.

Q: What happens if the TV doesn't support the required HDCP version (1.4 or 2.2)?
Then, whenever you tune to HD channels or UHD channels, you will see this error message pops up:
   
The meaning of HDCP 1.4 unsupported-TV usually is:
- Certain of very old models of Full HD TVs (e.g. before 2010s ones?)
- Those entry-level Sharp branded Full HD TVs, regardless of screen size (refer pic below)
- TVs that does not have HDMI input

The meaning of HDCP 2.2 unsupported-TV usually is:
- Same as what I described for HDCP 1.4 above
- Any models of Full HD TVs / as long the TV doesn't support 4K UHD
- Those entry-level Sharp branded Full HD and UHD TVs, regardless of screen size (refer pic below)
- Generally, if you ask Astro, they will say "4K UHD TVs that is manufactured before 2016/2017 ones, doesn't support Ultra Box".

*HDCP 1.4 or HDCP 2.2 are not to be confused with HDMI 1.4 or HDMI 2.0. It is a different thing ya.

The "dilemma" of Sharp branded TVs
There are many of older entry level models of Sharp branded Full HD TV, and also older entry level Sharp branded UHD TV out there, where either or both HDCP 1.4 and HDCP 2.2 is not supported at all.

I get to know one of the Astro installer out there, and he provided me this info that is being circulated among Astro installers quite some time ago.

I've been told that Astro installers is instructed by their bosses/leaders that whenever they come across a customer that is using any of these Sharp TV models listed above, are required to abort installation immediately and they are strictly prohibited to proceed activation of customer's Ulti Box or Ultra Box.
It is claimed that if the Astro installer somehow overlooks or ignores the directive above, yet proceed with the Astro box activation as usual, the Astro installer will be imposed with hefty penalty by Astro especially if customer insist to downgrade back to HD box or PVR box (since HD zapper and PVR box has AV/RCA outputs, so the HDCP issue won't happen).
That is just a "claim" lah, whether they really carry out such practice or not, nobody knows yet.

So I guess, when Astro CS agent asks the customer "What brand is your TV?" and if you say "I'm using Sharp TV." then this will raise a red flag already.

Q: I've been using Astro HD/PVR box on my old Sharp TV, and I never experience such HDCP issue until I upgrade to Ulti/Ultra Box.
Very likely because you haven't been realise that all these years, you've been using AV/RCA inputs to watch Astro (so you've been watching SD picture quality, even if the channel is in HD), that is why you never face such HDCP issue before, until the day you upgrade to Ulti/Ultra Box because neither Ulti and Ultra Box has AV/RCA outputs.

In case you don't know what is AV / RCA cable, here's a refresher:

Back then, you connect HDMI from Astro to your Sharp TV, ended up getting the HDCP error on HD channels.
So you try change to AV/RCA cable, then you realise the Astro's HDCP issue has gone. Since then, you just continue watching Astro using AV/RCA cable and you think you've "escaped" from that HDCP issue.
Today, you upgrade to Ulti/Ultra Box. So you have no choice but to connect HDMI cable to your same Sharp TV, then the realisation of HDCP issue on your Sharp TV comes to light.
Perhaps, you might even totally forgot about the HDCP issue even exists on your old Sharp TV.
Or maybe, now you remember back the old problem that comes up from the grave, the HDCP issue you've used to experience when you connect HDMI to Astro box.

Q: How about other TV brands? Didn't they suffer from the same HDCP 1.4 issue similar like many Sharp TV models?
Nope. Even if there is, the affected brand/models aren't as prominent as Sharp TVs.
Please be reminded that not every Sharp TV models suffers from this issue, so if you are loyal Sharp TV fan, please don't feel offended.
The long list of Sharp TV models shown earlier, they just take it for reference purposes only. It is possible that a Sharp TV model that doesn't listed above, may or may not experience other HDCP-related issues.

Ok, Sharp TV dilemma is over. Solutions, please?

Best solution: Buy new 4K UHD TV
Best yet obvious solution, but not the best for money, since not everyone is keen to buy new TV if their current TV works fine.

Best workaround: Buy a HDMI splitter that can bypass/strip/remove HDCP 2.2
For easier reference sake, if you see a HDMI splitter that indicates "supports 4K" with the price of <RM50 ones, it is very likely that it does not supports HDCP 2.2 (as of point of writing).
In simple English (but not so accurate in context): "HDMI splitter that supports Astro Ultra Box".
* HDMI splitter and HDMI switcher is totally two different thing, despite that it look very similar on the outside. Please don't buy wrong stuff ya.

You can also buy HDCP 2.2 supported HDMI splitters on Shopee/Lazada. One of the example:

The ones that support bypass/stripping HDCP 2.2 ones are usually priced between around RM60 to RM1XX. Generally, the higher the price, the better the build quality of the product.

Q: I see some cheapo HDMI splitters online, it costs RM10++ only....?
Those cheap HDMI splitters may only able to support/bypass/strip HDCP 1.4 only, and it doesn't support HDCP 2.2.
For Ulti/HD/PVR box, it should work fine. But if you use it on Ultra Box, you can watch HD channels as usual, but you will still get HDCP error when watching UHD channel/content.
However if you're unlucky, some cheapo HDMI splitters out there doesn't even bypass/remove HDCP, ended up defeating your main purpose of buying it. So do your research before purchase.

DISCLAIMER 1: If the purpose of you using HDMI splitter is to bypass HDCP copyright protection to record and distribute pirated content, that is illegal by copyright law.
I think that is why Astro do not officially condone such solution/workaround method. But from normal consumer's point of view, we all just want to solve the problem faced in our living rooms 
DISCLAIMER 2: It is up to you to decide which and where HDMI splitter to buy from, so don't scold me if your HDMI splitter were somehow went gila or doesn't work as it should.

How about HDMI to AV converter?

Generally, those HDMI to AV converters supports up to HDCP 1.4 only. So if you are using it for Ulti/HD/PVR box, it should work fine, but you'll be getting SD picture quality lo... This is suitable if you are using CRT TVs or TVs that doesn't have HDMI input.
However if worse case scenario, if you're unlucky, you might also come across those poor and cheap quality converters, where you might see annoying intermittent picture blackouts.
On other note, if you wonder is there a HDMI to AV converter that supports HDCP 2.2 so you can use Ultra Box to watch 4K UHD channel on your old CRT TV, then I advise you just give up and buy new 4K UHD TV instead. 

Ok, I got my HDMI splitter. What's next?
1) Connect the HDMI cable from Astro box to the HDMI splitter's HDMI input port
2) Connect another HDMI cable from your HDMI splitter's either one of the HDMI output port to your TV's HDMI port.
And don't forget to connect the power cable for the HDMI splitter as well (yes, external power required). And that's it. As long it is able to solve your HDCP 2.2 issue, then you will be able to watch Astro UHD channel/content even on your HDCP 2.2 unsupported TVs.

At the end of the day, Astro just don't want you to harass them because of your TV's HDCP issue, or even HDMI splitter issue
Long story short:
- You want to use HDMI splitter, then that is on you. Do it at your own risk. If you "don't know what is HDMI splitter", then don't proceed.
- If you didn't "declare" to Astro that you are using Sharp TV, and when Astro installer come and install, end up getting HDCP error, don't expect Astro will entertain your request to downgrade to HD zapper box or PVR box.
- If you are aware that your TV lacks of HDCP support, the best workaround you have is use HDMI splitter that supports HDCP 2.2.
- Using HDMI splitters also carries risks. If you're unlucky to come across poor quality build ones, who knows you might also experience blackouts or some other weird issues too? Even so, Astro won't be responsible for that (that's probably the reason why Astro themselves don't officially condone such solution/workaround to the public?).
- Not all Astro installers would carry along stocks of HDMI splitters or HDMI to AV converters with them (in case if customer needs it, they can sell to the customer on the spot), so it is better that you do necessary preparations before the Astro installer comes.

Q: I want to use HDMI splitter on my HDCP 2.2 unsupported TV, but the Astro installer reluctant to proceed installing Ulti/Ultra Box for me
They are just following orders "from upstairs". That's why, the best solution is buy new 4K UHD TV, and that would save a lot of trouble for everyone already.
Whenever Astro installer walks in to customer house and sees the TV brand is Sharp, they'll start to phobia already make sure your Sharp TV model number is not on "that list" first before proceeding.
If you can privately discuss and somehow meet an agreement with the Astro installer, by not harassing complaining this HDCP related issue to Astro customer service later on (even though you are using HDCP 2.2 unsupported Sharp TV), then who knows the Astro installer might just close one eye? 

Lesson learnt:
Don't buy Sharp TV There are many good TV brands and models out there, just choose the one that gives you greater peace of mind. Or else, HDMI splitter is here to the rescue.
