Hi. Can someone help with how to VPN to another country to watch Disney+ (Astro subscription)? I tried Spore but could not get into the app.

There is a msg saying my country is changed and I have to log out "in order to improve your experience the App will restart" but the same cycle just repeats itself.

Thanks!

Since the "Astro" partnership one is Disney+ Hotstar, not original Disney+, you need to install another app which is the normal Disney+.
*
But when I do a search on Google Play store, it keeps showing me Disney+ Hotstar only. No option to install the normal Disney+. This is while I'm on VPN.

You can consider sideload Disney+ apk instead.

You may refer to this thread about Disney+ / Disney+ Hotstar here:

Thanks, bro. Based on that thread, cannot VPN to other countries using Disnsy+Hotstar subscription; only Disney+ subscription can. Tx for the help!

If you mean Hotstar Disney+, then it uses it's own app and not the Disney+ version that Singapore uses

Got it. Thanks!

Hi guys. Has anyone noticed that Saturday Night Live is 'weirdly' censored with words like (I believe) "gay", "cocaine" and "lesbian" being "silenced"? But yet the censors have no issue with the word "bitc*" being uttered repeatedly (not in the female dog context).

And why on earth is the live musical performance also cut out??

Is it the doing of Astro or is Astro airing this censored and 'scaled-down' version cos it's cheaper?

WTH, Astro! 🤬

It could be Paramount Network channel themselves that censor/mute those words before they broadcast it to the region.

Not necessarily Astro is the one that always does the censoring job.

TV broadcasts will always be subjected to various censorship laws, so this is not just a Malaysia thing. So, the best alternative to watch uncensored content, is watch it from online sources.
*
Hmm ... It'd be rather surprising if a western network like Paramount "takes out" ordinary English words like those I mentioned.

In any event, what's the excuse for cutting out the live musical performance? And whata Astro's excuse for picking the "scaled-down" version (assuming the cutting out is not done by it)?

This one you need to ask the censorshipman that does the censoring job. In this case, that would be ViacomCBS.
For Astro part, the thing that they love to do all the time is delaying feed and then slotting in ads, rather than censoring stuff.

Those foreign channel providers, they know they have to comply with the censorship laws by the respective countries, that's why sometimes they'll do the censoring job on their side before they distribute the channel/content to the respective country's pay TV providers in the region (e.g. Southeast Asian countries).

In some cases, in order to make their censored/edited version more "universally accepted by almost any country", they'll also mute/blur/censor any elements that is related to smoking, drugs, sharp objects like knife/needles, severe profanities like the F word, revealing outfits, non-heterosexual like LGBT, and so on.

Fortunately, Malaysia is not the strictest one when it comes to broadcast censorship, that's why you still see elements like drugs and smoking being shown on Malaysia TV broadcasts including Astro. Profanities like sh*t and bitc* is considered as "mild profanities", therefore they usually don't censor those words.
(I hope the LPF don't read this sweat.gif )

But if Astro receives the already-censored version of the show, then Astro will just show it as it is. You complain also no use, since they can put the blame back on the content provider that provides the censored version. For Astro, they are not obligated to must get the original uncensored version anyway.

If they get more complaints from the public (especially those conservative minded people) for providing uncensored content compared to censored content, then this will only encourage Astro to take the censored version instead, to save all the trouble sweat.gif

In any event, what's the excuse for cutting out the live musical performance? And whata Astro's excuse for picking the "scaled-down" version (assuming the cutting out is not done by it)?
Then it must be "something wrong somewhere" with that particular live musical performance that could potentially "trigger" those conservative group of people lor...
You have any idea what exact live musical performance is that? Does any of the performers wearing too revealing outfits? Or somehow depicts LGBT? If yes, then that's probably the reason they remove it.
*
I have no idea about the exact nature of the live musical performances but all the episodes so far for this season have that segment removed. So it seems like a deliberate across the board removal irrespective of the performers.

From my quick check online, the latest episode has Billie Eilish performing 2 songs from her latest album. Don't think there could be anything "controversial" about the performance. Astro has shown Grammy etc awards shows with various artistes performing, including her.

It's just a ridiculous mess.

Definitely there is a reason they do that one... But based on what you just explained, my guess would be copyright related? hmm.gif I don't know, just guessing....
You can try email to wecare@astro.com.my ask them to forward to relevant department for answers (tell them to get answers from ViacomCBS), and see what they say.
Of course, don't expect immediate answers la. Do send them a follow up every 3 days or so, or else they'll put your case aside.
*
Thanks @joshhd.

Will email them once I get some 'energy' to do it. Sometimes it's damn 'sien' dealing or 'fighting' with service or product providers but from experience sometimes things really get done or improved if we r persistent n put our foot down. But I don't expect (not even hopeful) anything would change regarding SNL.

You're not alone. Streaming channels through Plug & Play mode on your Ulti/Ultra Box will have occasional buffering issue, even though your Internet connection is in perfect condition. Intermittent buffering will occur much more often when streaming UHD channels like channel 805/806.

Yes, you have 800Mbps Internet, and you can achieve near 800Mbps speeds when doing speedtest on your own devices.
But when you do Test Connection on your Ultra Box, it shows only 20Mbps even when you're on LAN cable connection (and yes, even when you're not downloading anything on your other devices connected to the home network). For me, sometimes I get 30Mbps or lesser. So what does this suggests here?

You can reach out to Astro customer service and explain everything you want, and eventually they probably will replace a new box for you, the intermittent buffering issue is likely going to persists.

I suspect it's probably Astro is trying to save cost optimising its overall costs on their server streaming bandwidth. In my opinion, this is one of the ongoing issue that Astro refuse to admit (cuz it's gotta be very shameful to do so). Astro keep encouraging customers to go for Plug & Play, because they can save costs and troubles in the long term, especially when it comes to after sales services on the usual Satellite installation.

Long story short, for a more immediate solution to ensure no such thing as intermittent buffering issues when watching linear TV channels on Astro, I suggest you go for Satellite mode rather than Plug & Play.

If you reach out to the customer service for them to do the necessary arrangements in their system and for you, eventually you may be subjected to penalty charges (if there is ongoing contract) as it would be considered as terminating your Astro Plug & Play service, and then migrate to Satellite as new order (that's when they'll arrange someone to install new Astro dish for you) and your 24 months contract may restart. You can dispute all the way to MCMC if you want, but in my opinion, the overall process is going to be tedious. But if you feel safe by going through their official way, then it's your choice.

By any chance, if you still have access/connection to the Astro satellite dish in your home now, you can perform Restore Factory Settings on your Ultra Box (home>Settings>Reset>Restore Factory Settings>Default PIN 0000), and then select Satellite on the "Astro Box Installation" page.
user posted image

If you see "SIM Card Error" message once you change to Satellite mode, try Refresh your smart card first. One of the ways to do it, is at Astro Self Service ( https://selfservice.astro.com.my > Account Summary > Card Status > Refresh). Credentials are the same as the one you login to your Astro Go account.

If you're concerned that you're unable to watch Astro due to bad weather, Ulti and Ultra Box does provide Continuous Viewing feature where you'll be given a choice to continue watching the particular TV channel by temporary switches from satellite to Internet streaming, until you tune to the other channel.

user posted image
This will only work when the box is connected to the internet. As of point of writing, Continuous Viewing feature is available on SD and HD channels, but not available on UHD channels and radio channels.

If previously you don't have Astro dish installed, and you want it now, it will be much less tedious if you hire own installer/contractor to do it for you, compared to going through Astro customer service. If you don't know who to look for, you can search on Facebook "Astro installer" or something like "pasang Astro" followed by your city name. For example "Astro installer Kuala Lumpur", then you'll see lots of installer contact details there. Make sure not to get confused with Astro installers and Astro sales agents ya.

However, if you are in a situation where you are unable or don't want to connect and/or install Astro dish due to various of reasons, then I feel sorry for you. sad.gif

My recent experience (the last being last night) : when watching live telecast of EPL matches WITHOUT internet connection (with my router turned off) the satellite transmission is not smooth; every 10-15 seconds or so there is some pixelation issue even though there is no rain at the time of the telecast.

My package is Ultra Box with satellite.

Anyone has experienced this issue as well or know the reason?

If you are using your own satellite dish, and you face satellite TV reception issues, then it is either one of this 4 main reasons:

1) Satellite cable?
Either the connector is poorly connected or the cable is faulty, or too long/old?
2) LNB is faulty?
The small little thing that points towards your Astro dish, maybe it's faulty due to wear and tear? Or maybe rainwater sips into the LNB that spoils it?
3) Satellite dish requires realignment?
Maybe wind blew too strong or monkeys messing with your dish until the dish position moves?
4) Astro box is faulty?
Although it's very less likely will happen, but if using a satellite signal meter device to check, and the signal reading appears normal, but your Astro box detects weak or no signal, then your box may need to be replaced. For this, you'll need to go through customer service.

If you're residing in high rise buildings (apartment, condos...) and your Astro box is connected to the building's centralised dish, then you'll need to liaise with your building management instead.

Thank you for your suggestions @joshhd.

Just to share (in case others face the same issue) :

1. The problem seemed to be the connection between the coxial cable n Ultrabox.

2. I disconnected the connection to the Ultrabox and the connection to the wall. After reconnecting, the problem persisted.

3. Decided to contact Astro CS via WhatsApp. Surprisingly now CS has multi-choice menu to select from where one of the problems listed is picture pixelation.

4. CS then automatically sent a PDF file with instructions to resolve the problem.

5. Followed the instructions and surprisingly the problem has been solved (hopefully for good). 2 differences in the instructions compared to what I did earlier are that the cable should be disconnected with the power off (and no need to disconnect from the wall) and after reconnecting the cable to leave the power on for at least 5 minutes before turning on the TV to check.

I don't get HDR on Astro channels showing the World Cup. Tried 2 TVs (both support HDR10, HLG & DV).

Channel 805 has Atmos but none has HDR.

Anyone has HDR?

Just discovered seems like the CS on WhatsApp is manned by a bot only; no option to chat with a live agent (typing "agent" led to "invalid option").

So I've emailed wecare@astro.com.my

I suspect they may say HDR is only from a later stage of the tournament?

BTW, how was the Atmos mix? Was it good or nothing much?
*
Thru the TV speakers, as expected, it's nothing much. It also has the undesired (to me) but understandable effect of making the overall volume softer compared to other modes like stereo.

Thru my relatively simple 5.1.2 system (not a soundbar), it sounds quite nice and atmospheric; kind of like being in a stadium with the sounds from the crowd around you.

Lol, i thought it's only me that have this HDR issue. I just changed my tv to a Sony TV and didn't get HDR as well. Hopefully Astro will have a good answer for that...
*
Received an email from WeCare asking for info like my TV brand and model, and short video of the channels. Sent for one of my TVs and decoders (with Channel 805 video, telling them 825 is not relevant since Astro itself says that is HD only).

Looks like Astro is behaving as if there is really HDR. I also mentioned in my reply that after checking around many other customers are not getting HDR as well and 'warned' that I hope it is not a case of false advertisement which would be an offence.

Called CS a few min ago and found out they have shortened their operating hours to 7pm only! I think it used to be till 11pm or 12am.

CS via WhatsApp is manned by bot only, via phone is till 7pm only and via email takes 2 days for a reply (not necessarily with a solution or is a substantive reply). It is getting worse and worse, but for football fans there is no real (legal) option available. 🤬

4th day of WC and still no HDR on any of the matches

Scammer will always be a scammer
*
Just an update : No update from WeCare after I sent the requested info for my complaint (TV brand, model, etc) on 22.11.2022.

I spoke to CS last evening (23.11.2022}. The following happened :

(a) after going thru some 'hoops' (the system said my acc no. and IC no. were not in its system, and had to call back after 2 unsuccessful attempts n each time had to listen to the WC promo of matches in 4K UHD HDR, but managed to get thru using my mobile no.;

(b) waited for easily 30 minutes before I managed to speak to a CS agent. He kept wasting my time by repeating my complaint a few times until I told him to stop doing that n tell me the solution;

© agent also gave me the impression he didn't know the difference between 4K UHD and HDR; and

(d) agent put me on hold twice saying he needed to check with his superior. Then said his superior who is "more knowledgeable" in this matter had left (by then it was about 7.10pm and CS on phone nowadays is till 7pm only) and he will get in touch with me "as soon as possible".

Based on the experience of the past few days dealing with the CS, I suspect we will not get HDR.

If so, I plan to file complaints with the MCMC and MDTCA, and I urge those who are in the same boat do the same too. I am pretty sure if nothing else it tantamouts to false advertising which is an offence.

Yes, HDR is finally here (4 days "late").

But Astro has not formally replied me (e-mail or call) regarding my complaint. I have a feeling Astro will just let it be and keep quiet. I have sent an e-mail "reminder" to prompt for a reply which (if I get it) I may use to file a complaint with the authorities.

See how it goes and my energy level. It's tiring "fighting" with business entities that take consumers for a ride (I have another on-going "fight" with Panasonic Malaysia to deal with). vmad.gif

I just checked on my TV, and yes, I can confirm that HDR HLG is now back again on channel 805.  thumbup.gif  thumbup.gif
As long the Ultra Box detects that your TV supports HDR, then the HDR will enabled automatically as you tune to channel 805.
Currently, there's no option for you to manually disable HDR output on Ultra Box.
Since HDR is now back on channel 805, I guess they'll reply by advising you to check your TV again, or they'll probably ignore your email.

Because of their incompetent handling regarding this HDR matter, which caused so much unnecessary confusion and inconveniences to many people.....
I wonder is there anyone here who complained to Astro about not having HDR on channel 805 before this, and ended up getting replaced with a new Ultra Box by the Astro technician?
As long they arrange an Astro technician to come over to your house to drink tea to fix technical related issues (especially when the 1 year box warranty has over), then you'll have to agree either 12 month contract (ensure your Astro account remains active for the next 12 months, or else they'll clawback the RM65 technical service fee to your bill), or else you pay RM65 technical service fee the installer directly if you don't want any new contract.

If yes, I suggest you better raise this dispute to their customer service to revoke the 12 month contract that has been imposed on you (if have), or credit back the RM65 service fee on your next bill (if you paid directly to the Astro technician).

I really can't believe this : on Friday (25/11/2022) morning I noticed some parts of the match between Brazil v Serbia did NOT have HDR (i.e. HDR came and went intermittently); and now on Sat (26/11/2022) the match between Netherlands v Ecuador is suffering from the same fate!

I trust I am not the only one? Whenever that happens I keep checking my TVs to see if something is wrong with them but then confirm the problem is not my TVs (i.e. they can still get HDR from other sources)! bangwall.gif mad.gif ranting.gif
