QUOTE(nexona88 @ Sep 4 2018, 01:47 PM) Kinda hard for rest to keep up with astro, in terms of technology. First in HD, and first in 4K broadcast to mass audience.

Also, SD feed in 4:3 is for Malaysia and Indonesia.

Well, the price is not the biggest issue here. However, all the exclusive rights' contracts that have been signed between Astro and the content provider has refrained the other TV provider from competing with Astro due to the unavailability of the content broadcasting right and the new providers may not be able to survive for a long period.

while the other countries are moving away from satellite broadcasting, which is expensive to maintain, to the more affordable services like IPTV, our new player still wanna invest in sat broadcast to compete with Astro??
first, Astro already had its sat infra setup, own sat in the sky, and already has it's ROI after so many years, any new start-up will have to compete with that with serious initial investment in the infra.
second, most of the current content are Astro exclusive with a long contract, due to previously there aren't any serious contender to the throne. Any new start-up will have to compete with limited content, and need to survive until the exclusive rights to Astro expires. You'll need to have a very very deep pockets for that. First few years sure seeing red one, and our typical investor would have pull out by then.
third, newer gen are enjoying their contents via streaming from smart devices like phones, computers & smart TVs, on-demand streaming is the trend now, sat subscription rate is on a downward trend, even Astro is struggling to maintain most of their subscriber, new Sat broadcast with real time broadcast? Which new gen viewer is gonna sit in front their TV at 8pm to wait for their favorite show again?
fourth, main target for those new start-up will be those fed up with Astro, and also those in rural area where streaming is impossible, or difficult, but how much is the buying power of the rural folks? they get to enjoy the Njoy for "free" already, why I'll need to pay for yours?

Still prefer more new player for IPTV, but not the satellite broadcast.
Although it's good for rural area (especially don't have so called "cable area"), but seriously the satellite broadcast is outdated technology.. Now more ppl using mobile devices or internet to stream of the channels.
If still need to use satellite, rather than use the C-band (Although it's more expensive than Ku band). However subscriber enjoy 98% no interruptions of poor weather..
Unless another new player for free satellite compete just like Njoi... But will they wiling to invest of this?
