My guess the function is same as the old smart card, just smaller size which is similar to sim card as we use for mobile phone. The installer use the word 'sim card' which also make me curious.    I will check the manual book when I'm home.

dont know what astro think, even they ask mcmc to block this and block that they dream that customer will subscribe them? They are naive, this will make people rage on them and the final winner will be netflix,iflix or viu. who want pay such a high fees on rubbish content.

If it's curbing content piracy, then it is a right thing to do, although it does restrict the people's freedom to access to pirated content online, but it protects the content creator's intellectual property rights and copyrights.

Yes, Astro would benefit from government's initiatives and MCMC to curb online content piracy in various of ways, but it doesn't change the fact that many people would choose not to subscribe to Astro if its overall services remain as what it is now. If many Malaysians doesn't like Astro, they'll resort to alternatives such as subscribing to OTT services like Netflix, iflix and others, or choose not to subscribe to any OTT services as they might be enjoy entertainment somewhere else, such as Facebook, YouTube, and others. This is about consumer behaviour already.

Eventually, many Malaysians would find that not having an Astro subscription is not a necessity also.
Because Astro has been monopolised the pay TV market for decades, for sure they'll "dictate" as much as they can.

Government and MCMC should also focus on not just ways to curb piracy, but also ways to curb any form of content monopolisation on pay TV providers, particularly Astro, such as not allowing Astro to be a exclusive and sole operator in certain major sports event and content, as well as certain premium pay TV channels.

Android box itself is not "illegal", but if the Android box is used to access to piracy content, that particular Android box could be deemed as illegal.
If MCMC would block access on those, they shall block on illegal IPTV streaming services instead of banning Android boxes altogether, and that is if they are serious in curbing content piracy instead of wanting Astro to gain more profit.

But at the end of the day, consumer is the boss and the one to decide.

managed to swap my laggy PVR to UHD Box without 4k tv, without 10mbps connection, without Sport package on yesterday morning. only thing is can't select the UHD resolution, nice design, smoother user interface, 1 year warranty for new box. they only change the LNB, sim card, remote control.

This is their decoder box...according to the poster, customer need to pay RM300 one time and got free for a year..after that have to pay RM 20 monthly if you don want to resume you still can watch the fta channels..service start next month

Example if you subscribe to Variety pack, then you can watch the HD version of CI (Crime and Investigation) channel on CH 716. You can't watch those new HD channels if you don't subscribe to HD-PVR Service.

I still see people with HD TV connect to Astro using RCA cable instead of HDMI. Never underestimate the lack of technical abilities of Malaysians :V

No this model is not PVR.
It's the HD box, from another brand.

They use DCSS so that in the future if they upgrade to PVR box, no need change new LNB or install new cables. Just plug n play, done. They wanna future proof la, basically.
No more whatever signal conflict or another Tuner become no signal, all those issues will be a thing of the past. All thanks to DCSS LNB.

If they do it on Malay programme, it might be understandable.
But if such censorship applies also in Chinese content, it just doesn't make sense.

It is upon customer's request. If customer want all boxes (including Multiroom) to upgrade to Ultra Box, then they'll upgrade it for you.

There's a way to avoid that RM199 installation fee.
Simply choose a combination of any packages/services you want (e.g. Sports, Movies pack), just to make it reach RM100/month mark (excluding SST). Once upgraded to the package, after 1 billing cycle, tell Astro to upgrade to Ultra Box with no installation fees since your subscription appears to be above RM100/month.
Once you've upgraded to Ultra Box, then you downgrade to the packages that you previously had that costs lower than RM100/month. No penalties will be charged for downgrading packages, as long you don't cancel HD-PVR service or terminate entire Astro the service.

There you go, cheaper way to avoid paying RM199 installation fees.

I stand corrected.From what I know once we sign up for anything  without installation fee based on packs above rm100 we hv to maintain that pack

How do you trigger this message to appear? Is it like, it'll pop up again every time you change channel, or every time you wake up from standby mode, or how?

i'm one of those stubborn user still using very old decoder...
earlier last month they called and offering ultra box w/o fees and contract... then halfway MIA... then just now received call from them say doing promo tambah rm 0.50 get 16 more channels etc, tell them not interested but their uhd dude went MIA on previous call...
few minutes later, received call again from Astro, telling will change to ultra box for free, but then renew 2 years contract... wt*? immediately tell them buzz off, not going to change liao. like many of u, if my parent willing to move to android box or netflix/similar services, long time i chop astro already. if no fee upgrade ultra box then can do, if mau charge even 1sen ... over my dead body.

As DIVA and E! channel ceases on 1 Jan, so many Astro customers asking the same question. This is the official reply from Astro:
For those who just came here and still not aware what happened:

Like it or not, it is the channel provider's decision (NBC Universal, that operates DIVA and E! channels) to cease the channels across South East Asia. So not only Astro are affected, even pay TVs from other SEA countries like Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand are affected too. So in other words, Astro can't do anything also. It's not that Astro want it to cease also.
So, do your research first before you blame Astro for any channel cessation.
Comedy Central is Astro's decision as a form of channel replacement for E! channel.
For DIVA channel, nothing. So you can say, 2 channels in exchange into only 1, while still same package rates.
Your subscription requires Variety pack and HD service to watch Comedy Central.
You're not the only one complain about this, and this is not the first time Astro doing this too. And it's no point even you complain to whichever parties, like MCMC for example.
In Astro T&C, they are not committed and obligated to replace any channels that are being ceased for whatever reasons. So when Astro decides to bring Comedy Central channel, you can actually assume that this is simply just their act of goodwill.

If you're not happy, feel free to terminate Astro as long you have no outstanding contracts.
And, you need to give a 30 days advance notice to Astro that you want to terminate. So you can't just terminate it with immediate effect just because you want it now.
