However, do note that both VPNs have free data limit (1gb and 500mb respectively).

If you use it for basic daily WhatsApp / Facebook / Gmail / Google, should be enough for your vacation / trip.

Do note that I bought a China Unicom sim card to use there.

For roaming with local Maxis / Digi / etc carriers not sure whether can bypass the firewall there. Seems like can from previous replies.

Edit: Opera VPN and Turbo VPN doesn't work at all.

For future reference:

Whatsapp, insta, fb works fine with malaysia sim card with data roaming. No vpn needed.

OperaVPN just retired on 30/4/2018.

Luckily my return flight from China also 30/4/2018. Hehe..

Malaysia SIM card with data roaming, no problem at all. We can access the same way like Malaysia. I tried this last month.

you can try out loyomobile
they offer great package to go online and can access whatsapp in China
i have been using their SIM card since the past 2 years in China and it worked fine for me
