Plan to get a laptop with SSD 256 GB with Win 10 home basic.

Worry that may be too tight for normal use (just word processing, excel etc with limited games).

Appreciate feedback from those who are using SSD 256 GB Win 10 now.

Thanks.

I am running Windows 10 LTSB version (without stupid apps, one drive etc hence much smaller size)

But I still wouldn't put all files in SSD, get a hard-disk to store media files, SSD for things need to load like OS, games, applications.

Please note that SSD speed will be slower if 80% full.

Running Windows 10 pro (ehem copy...) with a 120GB SSD (Check my Sig), no prob.

Full MS office 2013, and some other small programs.

25++ GB remaining.

What you should be worried is that IS the remaining 120++GB enough for games (^-^)

Surprising infor. Ha.

I am using Win 10 on my desktop (1 TB HHD). I think with Win 10 home basic it was taking up about 160 GB when it was new. Now used space is about 232 GB (did a lot of cleaning the other day).

So, glad to hear you can still run with 120 GB SSD and Win pro!

So going for 256 GB SSD! Ha.

If you use it purely as work and light gaming machine, then it will be more than enough space.

If you are worried about performance, my trusty Spectre laptop of 3yrs with 256GB SSD slightly less than half storage space used; no issues in terms of speed at all. Still blazing performance and boot time is as fast as it has ever been smile.gif

Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB, it's not downgrade at all.

Things I like are
-no app store
-no One Drive
-start interface are not tiles crap thing
-don't need to sign in Microsoft account
-smaller size
-lower CPU and ram usage (good for long term as wouldn't meet cpu bottleneck as soon as regular version)
-only rolls out major important update

I got mine from pir@teb@y, but downloaded wrong language pack, changed system language later

Been using 128gb since 2013-14 and filled with Photoshop, illustrator, premiere pro, office and many more. Still enough to keep all the files in the main ssd. Although I move some files to other drives because those drives sync with my cloud storage.

Also only until recently, I had to move my overwatch game because needed the extra space. And I installed my overwatch on my SSD pretty much around the time it was released.

So don't worry about the storage. For normal files it's more than enough. Although do invest in a hdd for bigger files like music and videos just in case

It depends what you put on the drive, really.
I don't put user files on C drive, I don't install most stuff inside C drive... This makes system recovery easy without worry about loosing data.
Also minimize the amount of space required for system image backup, the smaller the amount of stuff on C the better.
Since W10 is a "service" which constantly require update, it make sense to NOT store stuff on C driver, and make proper system image backup.
Strongly recommend anyone to do so; minimize the amount of headache and complaints on the internet later. If Windows died due to broken update, only takes 3 minutes to restore.
Windows already have it's own image backup function but it's not compressed, personally recommend AOMei Backupper (freeware).

Thanks.

Thought I read that Win10 alone will take up some 100GB space.

My Dell desktop failed some 2 yrs ago due to motherboard issue. Decided to get a new Dell desktop. Getting all the programs & files in the new PC was a nightmare I do not wish to go through again. Thus now doing 2-4 weekly backup of C drive.

right it's a better practice to always split data from os/applications physically. a lot of time can be saved just by doing this. usually this is done by a minimal 2-drive setup: one is for os (ssd), another one is for data (hdd).

if you have the habit to store files in Documents folder only in windows-based os, at least move those default locations to another physical drive. make backups for data and system images at regular basis.

Do note that the lower your freespace is the shorter your ssd Lifetime is a good practice is to leave atleast 10% free space at all time ,you can learn more here

Many many thanks!

Better than the video I saw before on this.

Will try to keep SSD for OS, OS related software and frequent used non OS software. Other files can be kept in HHD.

If fresh install Win 10 takes about 10-15GB only.

I think you having such big usage is either after upgrade you didn't clean up old windows file, or still have a lot garbage file from previous windows, or it include all the program files.

256GB SSD currently is sufficient with full microsoft word, VPN and download tool..
around 10 steam game still sufficient..
unless you plan to keep a lot movie/music and picture, than 1TB SSD also not enough..

all my picture are store in Icloud and my movie/music all directly stream from service provider... since we hv fast 50mbps internet now..

my experiences in SSD i changed 3rd time already.
1) in the year 2013 Kingston (SSDnow 128gb) lasted for about 2 years plus. lastly failed by can't detect at all all in suddenly. works well until the end of the day.
2) 2nd is the sandisk 120gb, this is the worst of all only 1 year then now it's not totally break down the reading speed still maintain 550mb/s but the writing speed dropped to 186mb/s. using crystal disk to test read and write.
3) 3rd just bought last week Crucial MX500 250gb 3D nand tech, test the read/write speed , read about 560mb/s write 513mb/s average. will see how long this beast can perform until then.

by the way just formatted to win 10 pro 1803 build, raw install with drivers everything included total consume about 36gb.

Just wondering whether you had about 10% unused GB on your SSD. They say this will prolong the SSD life.

36 GB after Win 10 Pro? Maybe I dont really need 256 GB. 128 GB may be enough for me. Ha. But of the price difference is small, better just get the 256 GB SSD.

lol yes i was very free that day i experiment the win 10 installation. i tried fresh install the first win 10 version, after install then auto update to the latest version build, the results is occupied 46gb! and then after that i format again and fresh install, this time i straight away do fresh install latest build. the result is occupied 36gb. means if u fresh install the latest build compare to install the very older version build and then auto update to the latest version, the difference is much. and also very very waste time the auto update from old version to latest version. now i save this latest 1803 build ISO file in a bootable pendrive.

I got the free Win 7 to Win 10 upgrade about 2 yrs ago.

Please PM on how and where you got the Win 10 OS for the upgrade.

Need to format and reinstall Win 10 on that laptop as it is not working well now.

Thanks.

What a bad luck sad.gif
Would you happen to install any 3rd party (soft/hardware) maintenance tools aside ccleaner?

Desktop- My primary samsung 128gb ssd, aged 5years+ and they running strong till date.
Laptop- Using solely samsung 128gb ssd too, aged almost 5 years for heavy programming, heavy editing (hundredth of layers), 10hours/day music streaming..more like a daily drive and it running strong till date too. Trying my best to not reaching reaching my last 20%. flex.gif

Got my new Dell laptop with 256 GB SSD. The OS and pre-installed programs take up about 30GB of space. Less than what I expected . Good.

How do I know whether this SSD has a pre-installed software to limit usage to leave 10% space free (to prolong the life of the SSD)?

If nothing on that has been pre-installed, what software can you recommend?

Thanks.

P/S Maybe it was 130 GB and not 30 GB.

30GB would not be enough after some time, a lot residue files plus many program also copy files to user/app folder. Then when big Windows update it need 8-10GB free space.

I recommend at least 50GB for C:, but better if 100GB so no need to bother about running out of space for a very long time.

Check what brand and model the SSD is and then check the manufacturer website whether they have any software for the SSD.

30G is a bit tight really. Unless you don't mind see the bar always red laugh.gif laugh.gif
40G is sufficient. Been running that size since forever.

If your using Edge & noticed your C drive suddenly full / used up tons of space,
get WinDirStat software to check which folder took up too much space.
It is possibly Edge streaming cache causing problem.

Plan to get a laptop with SSD 256 GB with Win 10 home basic.

Worry that may be too tight for normal use (just word processing, excel etc with limited games).

Appreciate feedback from those who are using SSD 256 GB Win 10 now.

Thanks.

Mine 128G. No problem. Still have 70G free.

Using 256 gb SSD for my W10; lots of space left even after putting in 1 or 2 modern day games of 40gb each.

Use my normal HDD for all the other movies and games that I don't play often. Works well!

Just installed 480GB Kingston A400. Only Windows 10 OS + some necessary drivers and software. Occupy about 30GB.
Get one for yourself and you wont have to worry about storage anymore.
I bought it @ RM268. You can get it now around RM275-290.
