Hi, is the Proton X70 1.5 Premium still worth considering? I'm looking for an SUV around RM150k for weekend and long drives with family. Got an offer from SA for RM124K OTR + 3 years free service.

I've been surveying all the C-Seg and D-Seg SUVs for the past 1 year++ and my main 2 criteria are:
1) Tall riding height with good visibility
2) Comfortable for 5 ppl.
3) Powered & Ventilated Driver seats

Other models I considered:
1) Mazda CX-5
2) Mazda CX-8 (Used)
3) Honda CRV
4) Subaru Forester (Used & New)
5) Kia Sorento (Used)
6) Kia Sportage (Used)
7) Chery Tiggo 8 Pro
8) Haval H6

CX-5 was my 1st choice but eventually it was rejected  coz I find it to be overpriced for what is actually an old model (launched in 2017 I think) with no news about facelift and lacks so many features that even new cheaper Peroduas offer. , The base RM138K model does not even offer Keyless entry, push start, LED lights etc! Have to top up to RM155K for the 2.0 GLS High to get these basic features. But still the car didn't offer an SUV-like tall riding height and ventilated seats that I wanted.

The rest of the Japanese and Korean models were also rejected since most of them are also aging old products and their new facelift models were launched with a significant price hike (CX-8 now starts at RM185K, Forester starts at RM175K, Sorento now costs RM250K!!). Found a used 2.5 NA CX-8 for RM150K++ but the road tax costs RM840/yr which is quite a lot for what is a weekend car (X70 road tax is a mere RM120/yr). And never been a fan of the overall proportions of the CX-8.

So my final 3 shortlist were the Haval H6, Chery Tiggo 8 Pro and Proton X70. For some reason, I never bothered to view or test drive the X70 since it was launched, maybe because I know the X50 is a more modern product with advanced tech (like L2 semi-autonomous driving). But still kept it in my shortlist due to the value factor.

The recent Malaysia Auto Show 2023 gave me the chance to view and test drive (the Tiggo and X70) these 3 cars back-to-back. To my surprise, the X70 seems to be the Best one in terms of Comfort, especially the SEATS! I was honestly Mind-blown with how comfortable and supportive the X70's seats are compared to the Tiggo and Haval.

The Haval has very plush feeling leather but rear seat were too upright. The Tiggo 8's rear seats were pretty good but the front seat were too narrow and tight (mainly because the centre console is eating into the Knee space). When I sat into X70, the seat comfort difference was like NIGHT AND DAY!! I can immediately feel the difference in comfort, especially in the premium variant with the Nappa Leather seats. This was also true for the rear seats, the one in X70 felt more supportive and cushy with better recline angles.

Now my mind is quite fixed to buy the X70, mainly because of the seat comfort. And the car offered a good riding height as well (taller than both the Haval and Tiggo), just like I wanted.

In short, I think the Proton X70 has one of the, if not THE BEST seats in the segment! But why is this not highlighted or emphasized in any of the review videos??

Can any other X70 or other SUV owners concur? Should I proceed with X70 purchase?

if u need a car that gets a great NHV, x70 is one of the best. I tend to stay away from Bermaz Mazda cz of the limited mileage warranty, ie 100k km or 5 years, whichever is earlier. In my case, I will use the car extensively, and that 100k km maybe cross by 3rd year plus, so no Mazda for me. For NVH, any Honda Made in Melaka is poor. I had a 2015 Honda Accord and it feel like driving a cheap car cz of poor NVH, cut cost for sound insulation for all Melaka-made car, even roof sound like a Viva when had heavy rain.

No idea about items 4-8 cz never had experience ride or driving that. But looking at pictures, Tiggo 8 Pro looks expansive and premium.

Tested the Tiguan as well during the Auto Show. Really surprised with the Space inside, didn't really expect the car to be spacious.

But 2 things that I didn't like:
1) Overpriced for what it is. RM188K. For this price, can buy the CX-8 which undoubtedly looks more premium.
2) The service costs for VW cars is simply ridiculous! Major service is RM4K++ and the Tiguan is not even a sophisticated or high tech car

Yes, the NVH in X70 really surpasses my expectations, it's miles better than Honda. I have the same apprehensions like you regarding Mazda and Honda (I am currently driving a Honda as well).

For the Tiggo 8 Pro, no doubt the car looks and feels premium. But the front seats & Ergonomics are deal breaker for me. I have to slouch my knees since the centre console area is quite big and eats into my leg space. The front seat base is also short and narrow, so much so that even during the 10 mins test drive, I didn't feel comfortable. The Chery Omada 5 surprisingly felt more comfortable than the Tiggo. If I'm in the market for a B-Segment car, no doubt I would choose the Omada 5. It was THAT good.

Mileage so low 5000km?

Im driving CBU now coming to 5th year, next year.

Just sent the car for SC checking for:
1) jerking - SC mentioned thaybhave updated the software for TCU. Will monitor on this

2) engine mounting started to wear off - estimate RM1700 to replace 4 pieces

3) outside smell coming in to cabin with internal circulation on - case intake spoil. SC mentioned need to disamble the dashboardbto replace this part.

Item 2 and 3 no more warranty cos exceeded 60,000km or 3 years.

my buddy is driving the CBU. He had claimed 3 times the Torque Converter under warranty after the jerking issue. Engine mounting, I rather buy the parts outside SC and install it at my usual workshop, it is just wear & tear items. Foresee price also cheaper by a lot outside.
Mine is CKD, so far so good for the GB.

i found this seller in x70 fb group, he does sell plenty of parts for x70, cbu or ckd. mounting also he have.
facebook guy

maybe can PM him for parts, and installation, i believe plenty of workshops with good reviews or recommendations can do it. I will also plan to buy it outside and install at my nearby house workshop since mounting warranty iinm is 3 years/ 60k km whichever earlier.

Anyone got issue with tailgate opening lower than expected?

Once I open the tailgate, it goes all the way up as usual then it will goes down 20-30% lower. If I not aware it will hit my head.

Really annoying as it happen alwiz. I didn't set the boot opening limit via the head unit. Even I set it default highest at level 5, it still happened.

Any workaround?

Hi all,

My CKD X70 Premium sometimes when reverse will have jerking. According to SC it is normal. Lately it is getting worse, but since I don't reverse a lot so lazy to go SC. Can I check if anyone suffering same issue and is there any simple cure?

I am thinking of changing my car next year to EV for local driving, but the next service will costs me over rm1k plus to 2k. Do you folks plan to change once the 5 year warranty up or even earlier? Last I check my car worth only 70k from 125k and only 3 years old.

Definitely not normal. Try go to Ioi Mall Proton Sc,from hearsay that SC kinda ok for warranty claim.

If sell, take effort to put it under carsome or others for good price.

Already went to check at SC, discovered one of the hydraulic arm kaput already hence the lowering boot issue.

SC will order and fix it under warranty but need to wait at least a week for the part to arrive.

Thanks for the suggestion guys!
