Hi, is the Proton X70 1.5 Premium still worth considering? I'm looking for an SUV around RM150k for weekend and long drives with family. Got an offer from SA for RM124K OTR + 3 years free service.
I've been surveying all the C-Seg and D-Seg SUVs for the past 1 year++ and my main 2 criteria are:
1) Tall riding height with good visibility
2) Comfortable for 5 ppl.
3) Powered & Ventilated Driver seats
Other models I considered:
1) Mazda CX-5
2) Mazda CX-8 (Used)
3) Honda CRV
4) Subaru Forester (Used & New)
5) Kia Sorento (Used)
6) Kia Sportage (Used)
7) Chery Tiggo 8 Pro
8) Haval H6
CX-5 was my 1st choice but eventually it was rejected coz I find it to be overpriced for what is actually an old model (launched in 2017 I think) with no news about facelift and lacks so many features that even new cheaper Peroduas offer. , The base RM138K model does not even offer Keyless entry, push start, LED lights etc! Have to top up to RM155K for the 2.0 GLS High to get these basic features. But still the car didn't offer an SUV-like tall riding height and ventilated seats that I wanted.
The rest of the Japanese and Korean models were also rejected since most of them are also aging old products and their new facelift models were launched with a significant price hike (CX-8 now starts at RM185K, Forester starts at RM175K, Sorento now costs RM250K!!). Found a used 2.5 NA CX-8 for RM150K++ but the road tax costs RM840/yr which is quite a lot for what is a weekend car (X70 road tax is a mere RM120/yr). And never been a fan of the overall proportions of the CX-8.
So my final 3 shortlist were the Haval H6, Chery Tiggo 8 Pro and Proton X70. For some reason, I never bothered to view or test drive the X70 since it was launched, maybe because I know the X50 is a more modern product with advanced tech (like L2 semi-autonomous driving). But still kept it in my shortlist due to the value factor.
The recent Malaysia Auto Show 2023 gave me the chance to view and test drive (the Tiggo and X70) these 3 cars back-to-back. To my surprise, the X70 seems to be the Best one in terms of Comfort, especially the SEATS! I was honestly Mind-blown with how comfortable and supportive the X70's seats are compared to the Tiggo and Haval.
The Haval has very plush feeling leather but rear seat were too upright. The Tiggo 8's rear seats were pretty good but the front seat were too narrow and tight (mainly because the centre console is eating into the Knee space). When I sat into X70, the seat comfort difference was like NIGHT AND DAY!! I can immediately feel the difference in comfort, especially in the premium variant with the Nappa Leather seats. This was also true for the rear seats, the one in X70 felt more supportive and cushy with better recline angles.
Now my mind is quite fixed to buy the X70, mainly because of the seat comfort. And the car offered a good riding height as well (taller than both the Haval and Tiggo), just like I wanted.
In short, I think the Proton X70 has one of the, if not THE BEST seats in the segment! But why is this not highlighted or emphasized in any of the review videos??
Can any other X70 or other SUV owners concur? Should I proceed with X70 purchase?
