Hello guys, I live in a double storey house with about 10 devices connected to my 30 mbps maxis fibre internet.
Need help from all the sifus here in choosing a new router. My old router is Asus rt-n12 which was not good enough gave me unstable wireless networks and lags.

Recently I have been looking at these few routers on Lazada but I do not know which is better for my home.

Tenda AC1200 AC6 Dual Band Wireless Router 4x5dbi - RM 155.55
https://www.lazada.com.my/tenda-ac1200-ac6-....59470ca6qY3jmf

TP-LINK Ultimate 450Mbps Wireless N Gigabit Unifi Router TL-WR1043N - RM 168.55
https://www.lazada.com.my/tp-link-ultimate-....3a3b62dbfheEbm

D-Link High Power Cloud Router DIR-619L Wireless N WiFi 300mbps - RM 129.55
https://www.lazada.com.my/d-link-high-power....59470ca6qY3jmf

TP-LINK 2 x 9dbi High Power Wireless N WiFi Router TL-WR841HP V3 - RM 174.55
https://www.lazada.com.my/tp-link-2-x-9dbi-....59470ca6qY3jmf

D-link 450Mbps High Power Wireless WiFi Router DIR-629 - RM145.55
https://www.lazada.com.my/d-link-450mbps-hi....5e2056cdUgLgim

OR if any sifus have any other router models that are better can recommend.
Any advice and recommendation is appreciated. Thanks in advance thumbup.gif

I would suggest you just forget about upgrading since the difference is not enough to justify the spending. Come back to ask for suggestion if you could stretch your budget to at least RM350

I agree with bro zher4883. Your budget is too limited for anything good.

Since you are using Maxis Fibre, you will need to bridge the Maxis router for VoIP, to the new third party router that you will be getting, or only two D-Link routers that can support VoIP.

guys, dont need to bash him about this. What you need is a router that supports VLAN on WAN and LAN (some call this IPTV), im sure some on your list supports it. You should remove dlink from your list.

Bridging is fine as even for TM you have the modem then the router. For maxis its pretty much similar too but i believe maxis uses the modem as a router too while on TM they only use the device as a modem only.

It would be irresponsible for me not to suggest a Mikrotik router. So Mikrotik.

my friend,i will share a proper procedure to determine if the new router suits/will suits you. first of all, all you need to do is, scan your existing network. If your network is congested with 2.4ghz bands, then throw away the single band routers out of your sight. In the price range of 100 to 180, you will get tenda ac router. Next, if you're willing to pull cable from the maxis router to the upstairs / downstairs. Normally, every sifu's will to put the router at upstairs for optimum performance since the antenna's fires the signals downwards and not upwards. If you wish to get a decent dual band router, i will suggest you to try some tplink models such as archer c7v4, however you need to add few more bucks. If you're in the plan to upgrade to higher bandwidth in future, then i would strongly recommend you to take a decent dual band router which comes with gigabit ports. If you're a gamer then you definitely concern on pings and internet stability, so most of the dual band routers will give you a decent gaming experience. If you planning to invest for your future network, then do it from now. and as SilentVampire bro says, you need to bridge your new router to the maxis router or you can opt to buy the dlink's vdsl/adsl router - modem combo.

i normally suggest mikrotik too, but think about his experience, you wouldnt want him to be stuck with a working paperweight that he couldnt figure out how to use without wanting to chuck it out of the window.

With a low budget, you can try adding a dual band access point. Btw even a router with no dedicated 'access point mode' in the configuration can act as an AP, e.g. tplink archer C20 (about RM160)
Since there are 10 devices at your house, this will ease the load on your main router (since you mentioned unstable wifi and lags). The 5Ghz coverage on the archer C20 is weak though.

link:
https://www.lazada.com.my/tp-link-archer-c2....1393d303PvVSe6

another 'cheap' option, perhaps can even use this as main router?

another seller: https://www.lazada.com.my/3-years-warranty1....436ee3c8Qs47Ru
not sure if all variants (v1,v2 etc) of it supports unifi though..

Ok bro. If you are not using VoIP, your choices just get bigger. You can go to the Mikrotik route, or double your budget and get the TP Link Archer C7 v4, which is the minimum I could recommend to you, if you do not want to bother with configuration. See here: https://www.lazada.com.my/tp-link-ac1750-wi...is-1774185.html

They mentioned V2, but will send the V4 to you.

If budget around RM500,

Want a powerful and capable router, can consider mikrotik. But u may need to spend some time to learn and tweak its configuration.

For set and forget type, just get Asus ac86u from taobao.

Both is good enough.

some of us may learn mikrotik via google easily, but many people just arent able to learn and figure out networking. The thing about mikrotik is that its not just adding a bunch of rules, you have to know what you're doing. For instance do you know how to use pcq to get the best quality and bufferbloat? To use the NAT, firewall and mangle to get good security and do all sorts of weird routing?

theres also pairing up mikrotik with another device to do IDS/IPS.

Mikrotik is powerful and capable but only if you know what you're doing. Just copy pasting rules online without knowing isnt helpful. How many here remember to drop connections marked as invalid?

Will recommend the TP-Link Archer C7 v4: https://www.lazada.com.my/tp-link-ac1750-wi...is-1774185.html or the ASUS RT-AC1300UHP.

I agree with you on Mikrotik. But, getting the ASUS AC86u from Taobao is risky, as ASUS Malaysia will not cover your warranty if there is any problems with your unit if you buy it from overseas. Just something to keep in mind,

I agree with you bro. I am still learning about networking in general and configuring Mikrotik as a router as well. No point getting something if you can’t really use it to its full potential.

Yes bro. Depends really. They might have change their policy as I heard about this a few months ago, but never personally have to claim for a warranty from them for an overseas product.

I am assuming you are asking about the difference between ac68u and ac86u. AC86u is better than AC86U, and newer of course. I would recommend the TP-Link AC3150 v2 which is cheaper than the two ASUS models mentioned above:

has anything changed in yr speed or network?

i used rtn12hp_b1 for 4 years... 10->30->50 mbps, all good.

this router couldn't do well enough with 100mbps when i upgraded, and that's expected.

simple setup, almost auto, no tweaking required.

If like this, just get other ordinary router that is easy to configure like Asus.

Bought Asus from taobao is cheaper, but the warranty part is a bit troublesome, as u need to send back the router to China for RMA.

Can check this thread, some of them bought their ac86u cheaper from oversea.

cloudcomputer and cloudstore are very expensive. There are some problems i see with malaysian pricing.

https://mikrotik.com/product/RB750Gr3

Listed price on mikrotik is $60. $60 is RM233 according to google. No one in malaysia sells this for less than rm300. When i bought my CCR1036 in europe i paid only slightly more than RRP because of shipping. So shipping + taxes the price i got was very close to the RRP listed on mikrotik shipped from EU to UK.

UK's customs are worse than malaysia, they like to charge taxes/duty where not applicable and break your stuff, however even with customs it was still cheaper.

Mikrotik's hardware is not made in europe. They dont do it themselves as they contract a manufacturer to make it along with their PSU which is the only problem that CCRs face. Everything is shipped from the same factory. https://www.balticnetworks.com/mikrotik-rou...wer-supply.html Just add shipping and taxes and you get the RRP price. So why than do mikrotik products in malaysia cost 50%-100% more? In countries like indonesia, mikrotik is liked for its low cost but in malaysia it is sold like a luxury item and not a budget product or even close to its RRP.

Pòssible yr rtn12hp about to die.

From yr description, i recommend u the rtac1300uhp... it will be better than rtn12hp or stock router.

More so for devices than have dual band, can easily get better wifi speed if not too far using 5ghz freq.

It is also good when u go 100mbps.

There are surely better routers but will be more expensive.

And for 50mbps, i will certainly not spend more than rm5xx.

sry, i mean ac86u and ac87u
saw some seller in the garage selling ac87u rm750 each  hmm.gif
for the past 1 month, my internet keep disconnected with RTN12hp. Have try reset the router few time also ask tm to reset the port few time, condition still the same. Finally last week dig out back old tm DL DIR 615 to try, so far no disconnect for past few days. For the speed part felt like 30mb and 50mb about the same on RTN12HP.

My house is double story and my rounter is set at the living hall. My com in 2nd floor only able to received 4 bar network with RTN12HP. Since now planning to get a new router so looking for better coverage.

I would recommend the TP Link AC350 v2 if you are intending to pay RM750 for the AC87U. The TP Link is newer and have nearly same features as the AC87U plus your house is only double storey. See here: https://www.lazada.com.my/tp-link-archer-c3...81e5NFJvLR&mp=1

Or you can get the ASUS Rt-AC1300UHP, which only goes for RM5xx. That should be sufficient for your needs.

cloudcomputer and cloudstore are very expensive. There are some problems i see with malaysian pricing.

https://mikrotik.com/product/RB750Gr3

Listed price on mikrotik is $60. $60 is RM233 according to google. No one in malaysia sells this for less than rm300.

Are u sure? Or u simply troll?

Sublime is selling it for less than RM300, it cost around RM260 only include shipping.

Everything is expensive here. What to do? Last time Landasan use to be the cheapest, example, RM118 before GST for the hAP Lite but their prices for the current products, not so good. Sublime is one of the more reasonable ones.

One more option is buy from eurodk but shipping, customs & SIRIM. sweat.gif

Just some more information:

Usually different countries have different laws on wireless frequency transmission - it's best not to import a router from other countries as the underlying firmware may transmit wireless signals at frequencies that may be forbidden here icon_idea.gif

Also the router from Taobao may have a different firmware (which may have a backdoor installed, due to government regulations) in it instead of the international firmware icon_idea.gif

Thats true, some mikrotik routers come with backdoors preinstalled by vendor but upgrading all the OS (normal and internal or any other partitions) gets rid of it. It used to be a big issue back in routerOS 3
