Love #5 and #13. Nice macro and silhouette
I always wondered about those shots on insects, do you actually go near to them or zoom in on them? This post has been edited by sojen: May 3 2007, 09:47 PM |

That spider was at quite a distance from me, so that shot was taken at full zoom of 12x or 432mm (35mm equivalent).
No cropping is done. |

QUOTE(vichio @ May 3 2007, 11:50 PM) The moon was shot at 12x zoom. Max aperture. Spot metering on the moon. I was told that I'm missing a lot of detail and the shot can be better. However I'm not told that what can been done to improve that other than investing in astronomers equipment. The sunrise was also shot at max aperture. Segment evaluation metering. My cam refused to focus on the sun, so focus and metering was done on the cloud next to it. I did a bracket of 3 shots with +/- 1EV, and select the one with exposure I like most. I've selected the 0EV for these shots. |

And it appears that u used f /3.5 with shutter speed is 1/400s ? Although i agree that can not shot like this at that aperture ? i tried many times to take pic of the moon, i used f8, iso 200, but never get as sharp and detail as your pic. So maybe the problem is metering ? Can u tell me what's different between 2 ? |

I think your problem might be focusing. Try set it to manual and have it at infinity since the moon is definitely far enough. I'm not sure you want to use f8, since it's kinda small, but you can always try out a few aperture setting and select the one come out the best. Another thing to take note is the environment you shot your moon from. Have some place with least light polution. I took mine at a dark beach. You may want to try it from the jungle |

Spot: 1% at the center of the frame Center weight: 10% at the center of the frame Segment evaluation: Average metering on few segments on the frame Since you want a correct exposure on the moon, so your metering shall be on the moon, spot will be most suitable. Besides, even at 12x zoom, the moon is still so small. |

Maybe the photo theme shows a little about energy saving when comparing 1 light to 3 bulbs... but doesnt really show save the environment. Is that whatyou were looking for?
Perhaps you can find another type of object that also illustrates energy saving and put in a background that shows the environment(e.g. nature) |

QUOTE(kelvinyam @ May 13 2007, 12:19 AM) That is a common misconception. Energy comes in many forms, it is not necessarily tied to just the electricity we use. It can be the energy that humans have to perform work, or energy to run certain things (e.g. your picture). Energy also comes in many forms like nuclear, water, kinetic, coal. Not all forms of energy saving saves the environment. If we save kinetic energy or water energy, it does not make much a difference to the environment. Since you mentioned its a competition within your company, why don't you provide us with the type of product or services that your company offers, that would give a better idea how to fit it to the theme. Just an example of putting saving environment and energy saving: Try to picture 2 guys in a park. On the left side, you have a guy in foreground reading a book while the background has trees along with a trashcan saying"recycle paper". While next to the guy reading the book is another guy with a laptop. So the picture tries to show that reading book saves energy (no need laptop battery), while in the background showing the lush nature with the recycle bin (books/paper can recycle). This isn't a very good idea, but just trying to give you a concept of how to put both concepts into 1 picture. It would be much easier to give ideas if we know what kind of product/services your company offers. Having a baseline to think along helps lot compared to pulling something out of thin air. Good luck with it. Don't forget the theme of the picture is suppose to be Save energy and save the environment, so focus on the save energy part more. |

This was captured in my house garden. I have captured a few with minimum aperture but still couldn't gat a sharp image. The length of bee is about 5mm. Under a heavy crop, the noise can be seen even at ISO80. I used layer mask to apply noise reduction on the BG, and sharpen the bee by 150% with Unsharp Mask.

The noise is due to sensor size. The higher megapixel per square mm, the higher the noise.

Yeah, these were taken from my mum-in-law's garden. She like planting lots of flowers
Large aperture (small F number) will shallow the DOF. Since the object is not too small, so it's kinda compensated. If I'm taking insects, the aperture will need to be smaller to keep most of it within the focus range. Photo #1, #3 and #4 were taken at the max focal range. I zoom all to the max on my S3 to take those shots. I can have a nicer bokeh doing this than open up the aperture. |

let me see...if you set it lower means you get wider DOF right...so for close ups...if you set it lower then the background wont be so blurred? shallow means blurrier or less blur?

Better angles can be taken with the flowers. The best out of the crop is #3. Try to use super macro if you have this function to get the best bokeh.

yep i get that part...but for taking close ups you used f3 which is a low aperture and it blurred the background... since it also did the job of blurring, what would be the difference if you used higher aperture? same results?

Higher aperture means larger F number? It will make it less blur. Still blur, but just a little less blur.QUOTE(CompMac @ Aug 5 2007, 11:56 PM) Don't take from the bottom of the flower. Flowers are the most beautiful viewed from the top or the side at an angle. OK I got it. |

Less blur because you got more depth of field. Means more things are in focus in the background.
Large fstop number means wider DOF, not shallow/narrow. |

To make you confuse further, there's always an optimum aperture which is usually the center of the whole range. For lens (SLR), it's usually F8. For S3IS, I've yet to find out, since I can hardly notice any difference in term of photo quality, other than DOF.

Lower fstop = bigger aperture = lesser depth of field.
Thats why bokeh shots always use low fstop. |

I will assume so, since for landscape, you want to retain as much detail as you possibly can.
