CORRECT Pratice makes perfect.
discipline is the key. of course, itll be good to have someone experienced to show u proper techniques, as learning them wrongly will take ages to correct them. its not easy putting away habits, especially when it becomes muscle memory. however, with the internet nowadays, theres so many (in fact, way too many) lessons one can have. usually we're just too lazy to go through them. apart from youtube(videos are a great advantage, as u can see how its done), you can read up on theory too and some sites give very good diagrams and explanation.
split your practice into different sessions. playing songs is not entirely practice. split it up into caterories like scales, techniques, theory, songs, etc.
to keep motivated, listen to as many genres of music as u can. i myself am trying to listen to at least 1 new album a day. im even starting to listen to the radio (im not saying all songs are good, but then i'll get to also learn in terms of mixing/production). also, go watch live bands play often. another way to improve very fast is to play in a band where the rest of the members are better than you. u'll be pressured, and u'll learn things u never noticed from them.
