you may want to learn more about codecs first bro. Whatever thats being played requires codec, even those bigname players uses many open codecs and stock windows codec. For me, its never a good thing, especially when a certain player is so fixed dead that nothing can be done to improve it further.

Which is why i said, MPC-HC is only a base platform, using it stock defeats its purpose because MPC-HC can be found since early windows 98/ME era as stock windows player. What makes it good is the customizability. If you are looking for a stock player and just wanna play it back without tweaking anything, good luck searching bro. Every player has its drawbacks, its customizations that reduces or eliminate these drawbacks.

you are right. i agree with all you said. Yes, codec is very important thing for ultimate needs for quality (and size). That's why Apple has been developing its own codec too, the new iPhone 8/X come with its own new codec if we choose to use it. In fact, I was a video editor before, so i am quite familiar with the basic concept of codecs, not at pro level though biggrin.gif

however, for here, i just wish to find something simple and good enough to use, just to playback video files with good good enough image quality. And so far, I found VLC meets my needs. In my eyes, it produces the most honest image quality of the original footage with great details.

btw, i just found out that by enabling the hardware accelerator setting in VLC, it can now playback most 4K videos smoothly, except for one: 4K on Webm file format.
previously, my setting was “Automatic”, which it suppose to auto-enable it since my hardware is not so weak after all. Not sure why.

webm (either VP8/9) hardware acceleration depends on your GPU + video driver and finally the video decoder.
Pascal is supported, the problem probably is on the video codec, hardware decoding are pretty strict, and only support a few profiles compares to software decoder.

Maybe you need to upgrade your graphic card driver.
To know if the playback is not smooth due to CPU bottle neck, just open the task manage to check CPU usage.

on win10, task manager even shows GPU usage.
