NSThttps://www.nst.com.my/news/government-publ...l-be-affordableQUOTE ECRL fares will be affordable
By NST TEAM - November 28, 2017 @ 5:49pm
KUALA LUMPUR: Passengers will pay as little as 20 cents per kilometre for the 688km East Coast Rail Link (ECRL).
Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Othman Aziz said this is to ensure that the fare will not to burden the people.
"As an example, the fare for a trip from Gombak to Tumpat will cost about RM120.
"The fare will not burden the people," he said this in reply to Datuk Dr Ewon Ebin (BN-Ranau) in Dewan Rakyat today.
Ewon had asked the ministry to state the country's projected revenue from the ECRL project and whether the income would be sufficient to pay the cost of the project.
Othman said ECRL's revenue will not be focused on just passenger fares alone.
He said ECRL, which will cut travel time between the east and west coast from 12 hours on average to a mere four hours, will also harness freight charges to boost revenue.
In August, state federal action council chairman Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said the cost of operation for the train service would be high but the government was willing to subsidise it up to its capability.
He noted that no country makes a profit from public transport and just like the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), the ECRL is subsidised by at least 50 percent.
The Opposition had criticised that the high cost of the ECRL project would lead to an expensive fare. --Reporting by FERNANDO FONG, VEENA BABULAL and ARFA YUNUS This post has been edited by Kampung2005: Nov 28 2017, 11:29 PM

QUOTE(red streak @ Nov 28 2017, 11:30 PM) Not necessarily. If the fare really at RM 120, we have to look at other examples... Bus option is RM 50, but takes 8 hours. Airline, fare itself can be more than RM 120 one way, if book last minute, but then KLIA 2 is very far from the city. So, electric train, which takes 4 hours from Gombak to KB at RM 120 is pretty competitive. This post has been edited by Kampung2005: Nov 28 2017, 11:34 PM

QUOTE(gogocan @ Nov 28 2017, 11:33 PM) can get AA from KL to KB for that price or less For that, you have to do advanced booking. If you book early, one way on flight can be below RM 100, but that's if you book very early Airport (KLIA 2) is still 60 km south of KL.

But still RM120 is quite expensive for east coast people..they might stick with regular overnight bus.

I think we can agree that, even if ECRL opens, the demand for bus will be high due to lower fare and bus departure can be around Klang Valley. ECRL may take away those people who take flights.

Currently, the expressway network doesn't go all the way to Kelantan. For that, need to wait for the completion of Central Spine Road (CSR). Even if the dual carriageway (not talking about expressway) goes all the way to KB, say the Karak highway to Bentong then add the Central Spine Road, then add the Kuala Krai - KB highway, physical distance is still about 500 km. 500 km if all dual carriageway, assume average automobile speed of 90 km/h...still need 5 hours 30 minutes or so by car.
