pricing depend on the size/wood/complexity of carpentry/finishing. biggrin.gif

guys, i painted my plank with polyurethane
and now its curved
how come ?  rclxub.gif

The wood warp not because of the paint. PU does not cause warping. Your wood wasn't dry enough when you work on it. As it dries over time, the wood will warp and change shape until it matches the environment's humidity.

Unfortunately, no. To properly dry the wood, we need a big ass oven called a Kiln Dry. This process takes weeks if not months. It is too expensive to do here.

So, we usually allow nature to dry it and this takes years. I had some tembusu that was kept for years (close to 10 yrs) and it still warps.

if its not to big piece, you can put in the back seat of your car, since we have hot day time. after a week alot of the moisture would have left the wood

Sorry. But that is a bad idea. That will indeed speed up the drying process. But it will just speed the warping. And because it dries too fast, the wood will have a higher chance to crack.

Ya, very good information here biggrin.gif

Even natural dry, it won't dry enough.

Another way to prevent such happen is used of older tree to cut, but then, it still not 100% ensure it won't wraps.

if the wood want to warp whether u dry it within 1 month or 1year also it will happen, as u said about your tembusu after 10year still warp..
so your recommended method still will warp also.. and need to wait 10year to find out!

anyway, after it dry then we will reshape and mill it to precise dimension and remove all the warp and twist in the process.

so the important part is learning to mill the timber to exact dimensions after the timber has warped.

for example, pic below. 6feet american white oak timber and after process or milling, warpage is max 0.5mm. thats tight dimensions and ready to use. (previous 3-4mm warpage at high points, no issue, all taken out of the timber)

boss by the way, i just talked to one of the Kiln dry officers yesterday regarding why yellow balau send for KD when export for overseas market. they said its to remove the shrinkage issue caused by fresh cut balau water loss. after kd then the dimension is more stable for machining/carpentry work. biggrin.gif

I agree with your statement. The goal is to shape the wood AFTER it is dry.

But do read your own post above. You asking someone to put a ready furniture in a car to dry.

its just a freakin plank. no need to exaggerate it as furniture rclxub.gif

so just dry it and accelerate the warping if that happens , and remill it to flat.

apa susah susah say there is no other way except to pay for big KD oven to solve the issue?

Hahaha, nvm, since wood knowledge is wide as sea, we can share and talk with relax.

I also still learning, learning from everyone, asking what info that we not learned biggrin.gif

Many years until today, i still saw plenty of fresh issue happen in our stock. Some say is species problem, some say is weather issue, some say, well, is because it is natural thing ! So it need to have more time spend on finishing it.

Everyone is welcome to my factory to see, you will be well served biggrin.gif
