I used to ask about this to an insurance agent two years back. It falls under general insurance for theft.
The insurance company usually offer fire and burglary insurance for the premises only. This means that if the camera/equipment are stolen whilst outside of the studio, no cover will be provided. He told me that this is because not many studio is willing to pay the higher premium and they simply do not have much numbers that enables the insurer to provide coverage for theft outside of the premises. This also means that we don't have insurance for accidental damage for local and during overseas travel. If you find one, do update me here. Because I wish to have my gears covered. Hope my own experience helps. |

It falls under general insurance for theft. Your agent must be new? It will actually fall under All Risk insurance, which covers not only theft but also fire, accidental damage, etc. Basically covered for almost everything except that is excluded in the policy. The insurance company usually offer fire and burglary insurance for the premises only. Hope my own experience helps. All Risk also covers worldwide, so the premium rate is much higher than normal Fire/Burglary insurance. And Insurance company usually won't accept walk-in risk for this cover, but if you go through an agent they might get it for you. And also it depends, they would prefer if you place all your other Insurance with them, e.g. Motor, House insurance, etc. if you want them to give you All Risk cover for your Camera, Laptop, Smartphones, etc. Btw I have covered all my gadgets up to RM50k sum insured lol |

Appreciate it. No prob, just request for All Risk insurance This post has been edited by Lego Warfare: Nov 24 2017, 12:05 PM |

QUOTE(zzzxtreme @ Nov 24 2017, 12:28 PM) lol i'm an agent, but sorry we don't do standalone All Risk for this type of risk unless it is a connected client who has all their insurance with us as well.Maybe you can ask your existing agent? If you have motor, house insurance, business related insurance place through him? |

Yeap. That's the answer I get from my friend who's in an insurance company as well.
Premiums are expensive but yet it's high risk and most of them wouldn't want to sell it to you unless you're already Buying other insurance from them. Personally I feel equipment insurance is not necessary unless you're shooting in high risk locations. It's always best to take precautions. |

Not that bad la, premium maybe 4-6% of your sum insured which covers theft and also accidental damage. Quite cheap all things considered Premiums are expensive but yet it's high risk and most of them wouldn't want to sell it to you unless you're already Buying other insurance from them. QUOTE(zzzxtreme @ Nov 17 2017, 04:57 PM) You raise a very good point when it comes to purchasing an insurance plan for your camera. Basically, one should be very careful when picking up a deal, and read all the terms and conditions until the last line. You know how the insurance thing is, the provider will deny his responsibility whenever possible.I used to shoot the London suburbs back in the time when I was a happy student in the UK. Of course, some neighborhoods were quite dangerous, I did not always feel very safe. Over there, the advantage is that the camera insurance market is very competitive, and you many insurance comparison platforms allow you to choose the best deal (or the cheapest - it depends on the priorities That being said, as a camera lover, I would always recommend to be properly covered, especially when travelling. That's a pity that there is no such comparator in Malaysia. But who knows, maybe one day Hope my comment helped out a little bit. Take care everybody ! |

But if you are a world travel photographer who flies to remote places often, definitely insurance will help.

til date, i still haven't found an "ok" coverage for my photography gear - been waiting for years, sometimes it just kills the mood knowing you're basically lugging around a car's worth of gear to some rural area for epic shot. The photog insurance market is so niche as compared to when i was posted abroad.
if anyone has any latest plan/info about a reasonable coverage - do share here |

Most home and renters insurance policies can cover your professional camera and gear up to a certain amount (in insurance speak, this is called a 'sublimit'). If you're at home, it will be covered up to $2,500, and if you're outside your home, it will be covered up to $1,500.
