Hi Sifus.
My MSI GT72 2QD have an issue of sudden full shutdown whenever I run games. It's like fully no power at all. I have to switch off power from the wall socket and turn it back on, in order to be able to restart the laptop.

Some details:
1. the shutdown can happen anytime between 2mins to 5mins of running games, with or without being plugged to power.
2. Temp for GPU when this happens is below 65C. CPU is about 50C.
3. If I'm not running games, the laptop behaves normally.
4. I tried using heavenmark, which also causes the shutdown issue.

I have attached the MSI Afterburner log. Not sure if you can point me to some clues for a fix. The laptop is out of warranty, and MSI official support requires about 2-3 days to diagnose and up to 14 days to order parts, which is a bummer. Hope you can point me to the right direction.

Seems like a GPU hardware issue. Best resolution is to send it in for service.

I would say most likely overheating issue or power adapter faulty means it can't draw high power from the wall to supply to your laptop when you are running high load. Take to laptop service shop for further checking.

Sounds weird, I would suggest try unstall/upgrade the driver for your graphic card, if it is not the overheating problem.

cpu and gpu is not overheating, i would say its the vrm overheating triggering the thermal protection measures

also ts does the laptop just kaput and black screen? or got blue screen?

Total power off. Can't start unless I unplug the power cord from the wall socket and then plug it back in.

Yeah agree on that, so i would say assume it is overheating.

seem like issue related to power delivery, i advise you take back to msi official store

or if you want to do more digging you could install hwmonitor, run some stress tests then check the voltage/ wattage figures, and possibly the vrm temps

Probably temperature too high? Vendalition need improve probably.

If it's VRM issue, does that mean changing the graphics card will help?

Is mostly overheat.

you try to monitor the temperature when you running 3D program like games, benchmark program.

If it is power brick issue like above said. you will see this behavior which is when you run the 3D program it can't perform up to the GPU standard. That is due to the GPU need to draw more current from the power brick but the power brick didn't deliver enough. And then after a while the power brick will failure due to the high current draw.

I also would suggest checking those with AC mode. Because the problem might cause by your old battery which couldn’t provide enough power with heavy loading task.

I have same problem too with my laptop shutting down for no reason when on AC charger mode when under load. It turned out that it's the deteriorated battery that's the culprit when attached to laptop together with AC charger.

I don't think it's the overheat issue since gaming laptop have higher temperature threshold and can withstand internal temperature of 80-90C just fine. One thing I will suggest is when plugging AC charger to laptop, detach the battery and play games on laptop in AC-only mode.

And battery replacement maybe.

Wow. You're right! Seems to be ok so far after disconnecting the battery.

Quick update. Shutdowns still happening but at longer intervals after disconnecting battery. Looking at 20 to 30 mins.

then try another charger, seems like power delivery issue
