KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 26): UMW Holdings Bhd's subsidiary UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMWT) — which is responsible for the distribution, assembly and export of Toyota vehicles — is transferring a majority of outlets it currently owns and operates to existing Toyota dealers.

In a statement filed with Bursa Malaysia, UMW said the exercise allows UMWT to increase intensity on high value-added upstream activities such as product development, marketing and dealer network support, while dealers continue to dedicate themselves towards delivering customer satisfaction.

"UMWT is extending its collaboration with dealers to enhance operational excellence. Key to this is the strengthening of retail operations from January 2018 where a majority of outlets currently owned and operated by UMWT will be transferred to existing Toyota dealers," said UMWT president Ravindran Kurusamy.

"It is essential for UMWT to continue achieving high customer satisfaction standards," he added.

According to UMWT's website, the company — which is also the exclusive distributor of Lexus models in Malaysia — has 38 branches and 68 authorised dealership outlets nationwide.

What do you think? sounds like hands off starting 2018 but then again could be a good thing because UMW has no more excuses to delay launching more models and better (equipped) models because frankly they are really really guilty of being extremely slow poke

I will tell you one thing.

They really have the best network in Malaysia. All their dealers are linked, their supplies and parts can be viewed from whichever dealer you are at - it's all for everyone to see. Even the pricing is controlled and standardized across Malaysia, doesn't matter which dealer you go to - the price is the same across the board.

No other car manufacturer in Malaysia comes close to the kind of connectivity they have. Last I heard, Honda was implementing a system to link up all the dealers like Toyota, so was the case with VW ... not sure if they have actually accomplished that or not.

The entire network already there. Doesn't matter what they do now.
In recent years, their focus have been solely on higher profitability like Hyundai/Kia. Maybe this is one of those strategies that they think will help them cut cost.

Maintaining that standard is not easy when you are not putting a stake in it anymore. When you don't put your money in it so to speak.

I think Toyota want to simplify their business structure, and reduce the cost by transfer some cost to dealer.

Bingo. So what is the implications?

Let us think about it.

Before that UMW own a stake as close to 50% in these service network, to keep them, you need to upkeep the facilities, the licensing , the technical.manpowers , the service personnel . As a stake holder, your capital is invested in these JVs. Since it is a 50: 50.joint venture, the cost and profit could be split between UMW Toyota and the JV dealer. Now everything is dealers. All cost borne by dealers with all risk of profit or loss fully retained by dealers.

If you divest, you normally do so because it is no longer profitable or declining profit or worst case scenario, it is net loss situation.

Which leaves a simple question to ask? Do you think these dealers would be happy to take on FULL ownership with only technical support. And more importantly, do you think they will not compromise service standard?

Think of it this way. Since every cost is Mine and MIne alone, would I not want to cut cost too?. So you will compromise by having fewer technicians , fewer service staff, keeping lower stocks of parts..... naturally , right?

That sounds like a cartel, smells like a cartel and looks like a cartel ...... but it's not a cartel ....
in a 'free' economy that is 'managed and manipulated' with involvements from GLC's ..........
of which UMW is one. tongue.gif

Any wonder why local businesses couldn't cope with onslaught from China enterprises in home ground , not mentioning NEP psyche , as yet.
