ARA San Juan: Argentina calls off rescue mission for 44 missing submariners but continues search for lost vessel
Argentina's navy says it has called off a rescue mission for the crew of missing submarine ARA San Juan that went missing two weeks ago a few hundred kilometres off the coast of Argentina. The search for the vessel itself will continue. Navy spokesman Enrique Balbi said that the rescue mission for the 44 crew members "extended for more than twice what is estimated for a rescue." At least 18 countries had joined the search and rescue efforts in the 15,444-square-mile (40,000 sq km) search area. The vessel had been travelling from the southern tip of the country near Ushaia to Mar del Plata on the northern coast. The San Juan, a German-built diesel-electric TR-1700 class submarine, was commissioned in the 1980s and was most recently refitted in 2014. In the wake of the disappearance, however, family members have publicly called for an investigation including asking questions about the age and condition of the vessel. The Argentine Navy had said the vessel's captain reported water entered the snorkel - or the tube that reaches above refresh the vessel's air and batteries - and caused one of the submarine's batteries to short circuit. He also reported fire and smoke as a result. However, he later communicated via satellite phone that the problem had been contained and the fire extinguished. It was not until approximately 10 hours later that an explosion occurred near the time and place of last communication from the ARA San Juan. The US and an international organisation had discovered the acoustic data - the sound of the explosion - just last week. ![]() |

Canada scraps Boeing fighter jet deal, will buy used Australian F-18s instead
Canada is scrapping a plan to buy 18 Boeing Co Super Hornet fighter jets amid a deepening dispute with the U.S. aerospace company, three sources familiar with the matter said on Tuesday. Instead, the Liberal government will announce next week it intends to acquire a used fleet of older Australia F-18 jets, the same kind of plane Canada currently operates, said the sources, who asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the situation. The move underlines Ottawa’s anger at a decision by Boeing to launch a trade challenge against Canadian planemaker Bombardier Inc, which the U.S. giant accuses of dumping airliners on the domestic American market. It also casts into question the future of Boeing‘s military sales in Canada. Boeing says its commercial and defense operations in Canada support more than 17,000 Canadian jobs. Canada and Mexico are currently locked into increasingly acrimonious negotiations with the United States over the NAFTA trade pact, which President Donald Trump says has not done enough to protect U.S. jobs. ![]() This post has been edited by DDG_Ross: Dec 6 2017, 10:43 AM |

QUOTE TRAINING PUNCH-UP; More than 100 Paras and Gurkhas fought with poles, bats and heavy machine-gun barrels as a training exercise exploded into mayhem The Royal Gurkha Rifles — motto: Better to die than to be a coward — were playing the role of an enemy and hid the cudgels for an ambush. They lashed out as troops from 3rd Battalion, Parachute Regiment launched their final assault of the eight-week exercise. The Paras — motto: Ready for Anything — grabbed spare heavy machine-gun barrels to hit back. Scores were injured. An insider said: “It was like a scene from a football hooligan film. Soldiers were fighting using rifles and spare general purpose machine gun barrels as clubs. “A few of the guys were hospitalised, and there aren’t many without a bruise or gash.” Sources said there had been bad blood between the units since a brawl when they faced each other on the same exercise at Archer’s Post base in Nanyuki, Kenya, two years ago. “I’m not sure who you’d declare the winners, the Gurkhas used surprise well so they may have clinched it.” One Army source tried to play down Thursday’s battle during Exercise Askari Storm, saying: “These are two of the most elite infantry units in the world training intensely. https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/uknews/508407...ise-mass-brawl/ ![]() |

Terrorist group planning to attack another city – Andanar
Citing intelligence reports, Communications Secretary Martin Andanar on Sunday said terrorist group Daulah Islamiyah, which is connected to the Maute and Abu Sayyaf groups, has been planning to attack another city in the country. He said this as he stressed the need to extend martial law in Mindanao, based on the proposal of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). In an early morning interview on Super Radyo dzBB, Andanar said the Daulah Islamiyah group has continued its recruitment activities. "Yung grupo ng mga tinatawag natin mga terorista na patuloy pa rin, double time yung kanilang pagre-recruit para dumami pa yung mga kapatid nating Muslim na sumama sa Daulah Islamiyah," he said. "So ang balita ay lumakas ang kanilang pagre-recruit sa Mindanao. Ang problema nito, may mga intelligence report na nagpaplano silang umatake sa isa pang siyudad," he added, but he did not disclose the name of the city. But he said that the intelligence information is enough reason to increase security in the country. At the Bangon Marawi briefing on Friday, military spokesperson Major General Restituto Padilla Jr. said that the AFP is recommending the extension of martial law in the entire island of Mindanao. Padilla cited terrorist recruitment and increasing violence from the communist rebels as the basis of the AFP's recommendation. In the dzBB interview, Andanar also said that aside from Daulah Islamiyah, groups such as the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters and the Abu Sayyaf have likewise posed threats to several areas in Mindanao. "So therefore, kailangan ma-extend ang martial law sa Mindanao." Likewise, Andanar said violence may further persist in Mindanao after the formal termination of peace talks between the government and the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army-National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF). "Nandiyan din yung threat ng CPP-NPA-NDF dahil after na-announce ni Presidente na putulin na, tapusin na yung peace talks, of course kasama na diyan yung ceasefire, kasama na rin diyan yung pagbansag sa kanila na terror group." Andanar clarified that the communist rebels cannot be immediately considered a terrorist group under the Human Security unless declared by the court. "Once magdesisyon ang korte na gawin nang terror organization itong NDF-CPP-NPA ay magkakaroon na yan ng hulihan," he said. "Hindi pa nagbibigay ng go signal ang korte ay tuloy-tuloy yung pag-atake ng CPP-NPA-NDF especially ng armed component nila sa ating mga kasundaluhan at mga kapulisan at mga pribadong kumpanya na hindi nagbabayad ng revolutionary tax," he added. Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said last Tuesday that the CPP-NPA has been declared as a designated, identified terrorist organization, a move which came barely two weeks after Duterte formally terminated the peace talks with the communist group. https://www.msn.com/en-ph/news/world/terror...rGMc?li=AAb280R |

![]() This grass fire started on CFB Suffield in southeastern Alberta on Sept. 11, 2017, then spread beyond the military base. It burned an estimated 36,500 hectares — nearly half the size of Calgary. (Cam Klatt ) 160 cattle killed, cropland destroyed but no compensation yet for farmers months after military started fire Ivan Schlaht says there isn't enough money "in God's green Earth" to cover his losses from a fire that started on CFB Suffield in southeastern Alberta and spread to a nearby pasture, where his 98 cattle were killed. He's just one of the ranchers and farmers still awaiting compensation months after the fire burned an estimated 36,500 hectares — nearly half the size of Calgary — and killed at least 160 cows, according to the Special Areas Board, the rural municipality near the base. The fire started on Sept. 11 when soldiers were blowing up unexploded ordnance on the base, which is the largest military training facility in Canada. The grass fire killed at least 160 cows, according to the Special Areas Board, the rural municipality near the base. (Swenson family) A fire ban across most of southern Alberta was in place at the time and the temperature was at least 32 C with moderate west winds. About 6,500 hectares of the affected land were outside the training area, and the flames that spread off the base caused "tragic" results, the commander at CFB Suffield has admitted. "I'm trying to get a handle on what a cow that was burnt, that suffered.… I don't know. I can't get a handle on a price for something like that," said Schlaht. He said it was one of the grossest things he has ever seen. Burned and dead cattle were scattered along blackened hillsides in a rural municipality officially known as Special Areas No. 2, southwest of the tiny community of Bindloss — and near the northeast corner of the military base. The day after the fire, about 20 cattle were still alive but clearly suffering from injuries sustained in the blaze. Schlaht said one of his friends put the animals down for him. "A million dollars still wouldn't cover what I lost because of the anguish the cattle and myself went through," said Schlaht. Losses mounting Daryl Swenson said the fire scorched more than 500 hectares of his grass and crop land. He has borrowed at least $60,000 to replenish some of the winter feed that was lost and for materials to start rebuilding the estimated 10 kilometres of fence that was destroyed. Swenson was not sure how much he would have to spend to repair all the damage because the fire stripped away the grass and crop and left the soil in some places exposed. He said the soil has blown off in some areas. "Top soil is what everything grows on, it's the most valuable resource on the farm. Without top soil, you have nothing." 'Not good neighbours at all' Swenson said people are fed up with the fires that are sparked during training exercises on the base, which stretches across 2,700 square kilometres of prairie, and are growing impatient waiting for attitudes to change. "In the past they have not been good neighbours at all," said Swenson. Morley Sarvis' burned farm house The concrete steps that led to the front door of Morley Sarvis's home near Bindloss, Alta. The home and several outbuildings were destroyed in the Sept. 11 grass fire. Lt.-Col. Mike Onieu said he personally apologized to people affected by the fire in September and he knows the compensation process is not happening quickly enough. "It's not a fast process and it does take time," said Onieu. "It creates a huge amount of difficulty for people who are trying to pay their bills, get their feed for the season, replace their livestock. Yes, that is difficult." CFB Suffield accepts responsibility for grass fire that ranchers believe killed their cattle Swenson hopes to see a cheque in the next few months. "If we aren't seeing anything by then, then we're going to start looking at different actions I guess, be it legal or whatever." The fire scorched about 4,200 hectares on the Remount community pasture, part of the rural municipality known as Special Areas. The local government stands to lose an estimated $45,000 in lost grazing revenue next year, according to Jordon Christianson, chair of the Special Areas board. "It's absolutely devastating to see these things roll through." The area had been used by more than 900 head of cattle, and ranchers will have to find other areas to graze their cattle. "It's never good to have uncertainly when you're a producer whose livelihood depends on these resources," said Miller. CFB Suffield headquarters The base commander at CFB Suffield plans a briefing with residents affected by the grass fire that started on the base and spread to nearby grass and crop land. Onieu said the meeting will be held sometime in January. (Bryan Labby/CBC ) Swenson credited Onieu and other members of the military for meeting with him and other farmers following the fire, but expressed disappointment that the military has yet to send out an insurance adjuster to help calculate their losses. "We've all had a lot of expenses that a lot of us are paying interest on. So we are out that money for that much time. The sooner the better he's out here." Fire guard 'very unlikely' for 2018 Nearby residents have been pushing for a fire guard to be built around some sections of the base's perimeter. Onieu said that while it is a priority for him, it won't be in place next year. CFB Suffield fire at Sarvis property Flames from an out-of-control grass fire are seen moments before they consumed a barn, several outbuildings and Sarvis's home. (Swenson family ) He said they have to treat the area where they want to put the fire guard as a mine field. "If it wasn't a live fire range, we could simply just plow the ground from time to time." Onieu said the first step is to do a clearance operation to ensure the area does not contain unexploded ammunition, such as bombs, grenades, mortar rounds or artillery shells — but it's not clear when that work will start. Onieu said it's "very unlikely" the guard will be in place in 2018. Onieu said he has taken over sole authority when approving "fire-producing activities" on the base. He said a firefighter will be hired during "critical fire prone periods of the year," and neighbouring professional and volunteer firefighters may be trained about the hazards of fires on the base. That could allow them access to the base to help fight fires. The military's own investigation into the fire, a board of inquiry, was ordered by the 3rd Canadian Division commander, Brig-Gen. Trevor Cadieu. Property owners met individually with members of the board following the fire. Onieu said the base plans to host a "technical briefing" with property owners to discuss some of the findings and possible recommendations in January, although an exact date has not been set. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/160-...-fire-1.4447359 ![]() RIP cows.. |

QUOTE (LEAD) N. Korean soldier flees to S. Korea via land border: military SEOUL, Dec. 21 (Yonhap) -- A North Korean soldier defected to South Korea through the land border Thursday, the South's military said. The "low-ranking" soldier appeared in front of a guard post on the mid-western front at around 8:04 a.m. amid thick fog, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS). There was no gunfire involving the latest defection of a North Korean soldier, the fourth this year alone, and no unusual movement of the North's border troops has been detected either, a JCS official told reporters. Related authorities are looking into the defector's intentions, he added. Last month, a North Korean soldier made a successful dash to the South via the truce village of Panmunjom after suffering multiple gunshot wounds fired by the communist nation's border guards. lcd@yna.co.kr http://english.yonhapnews.co.kr/news/2017/...1002551315.html |
