Wow... should be pretty expensive to move all those troops and gear.

soon they would have 3 batches of 4,000 a year... 12k from army in total, some assets will be stationed permanently there and a sizable unit of regulars will be based there making a mini base... navy units will be dropping by often too especially when guard units are training... mostly armour and guards

hope infantry will have a similar arrangement in thailand too for jungle training... exercises in germany and taiwan might scale down or disappear as great powers are not too happy

First joint air patrols over Sulu Sea launched by Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia

user posted image

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines launched a joint maritime air patrol on Thursday (Oct 12) to add another layer of surveillance over the Sulu Sea, said Malaysia's Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein.

Mr Hishammuddin added that this tri-nation effort was needed as the Sulu Sea waters are being used by terrorist organisations as a base for operations.

The Philippines, in particular, has seen the impact of the rise of militancy in the region with the months-long siege of Marawi City by the Islamic State-inspired Maute militant group.

The launch of the air patrol was reportedly delayed due to the violence in Marawi.

Philippines' Secretary of National Defence, Delfin Lorenzana said that the Trilateral Air Patrol allowed for better surveillance of extremists' movements in the region.

"The effect of this (patrol) is we can prevent others from coming in and also from escaping because a lot of the fighters are also Malaysian and Indonesian and from the Middle East," said Mr Lorenzana.

Mr Hishammuddin added that ASEAN is now also dealing with the return of foreign fighters fleeing from a crackdown on their activities in the Middle East.

"It is up to us to guarantee that the area is secure and safe. We must be vigilant and stringent in our efforts to address and eradicate these growing security challenges. With the successful implementation of the Trilateral Cooperative Arrangement, we can prove to the world that this is the way forward," he said.

The air patrol will rotate monthly among the countries, with Malaysia leading the operations first using Royal Malaysian Air Force aircraft.

This air patrol is in addition to the joint maritime patrols in the Sulu Sea that the three countries launched in June.

They will later decide if they will be inviting more nations to join the patrols.

Singapore's Senior Minister of State for Defence Dr Mohamad Maliki Osman and Brunei's Deputy Minister for Defence Abdul Aziz were also present at the launch as observers.

Singapore has said it is willing to offer whatever assistance necessary in these efforts.

A few days before AUSA 2017 Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) announced it would developed prototypes for the MPF programme. The company will work together with ST Kinetics and CMI Defence. SAIC will base its offer on ST Kinetics’ Next Generation Armoured Fighting Vehicle (NGAFV) chassis. It will be most likely equipped with CMI Defence’s Cockerill 3105-series turret. General Dynamics Land Systems and BAE Systems are also competing. (Photo: Robert Czulda)

Eurofighter jet crashes in Spain, killing pilot

user posted image

QUOTE
MADRID (Reuters) - A Eurofighter combat jet plane crashed near a military base in southeastern Spain on Thursday, killing its pilot, an emergency services spokesman said.

Local emergency services received a call at 1009 GMT informing them that the plane had crashed on farmland around the Los Llanos base near the town of Albacete, the spokesman said.

The jet had been taking part in a military parade to commemorate Spain’s national holiday and crashed on its return, a defence ministry spokesman said.

The causes of the accident were being investigated, the ministry added in a note.

Yes using the ST Kinetics NGAFV hull with a CMI 3105 turret. The CMI 3105 turret is the same as the Indonesian Medium Tank.

btw i always think how powderful it will  be if modern advancement (metallurgy, fcs, electronics) could be applied to these big guns

okay maybe not 240mm gun but it's totally could be done on 203mm gun like M110 or 2s7. imagine this sph but with longer, lighter gun, better chassis with improved engine and suspension and fcs that could enable it to fire up to 3 rds/min
*
Probably logistics limitations especially the ammunition were way bigger anf heavier.
155mm shell is already heavy and large.

Rebalancing US Navy 7th Fleet towards training, preparation is key, says new commander

user posted image

SINGAPORE - The operational demands on the US Navy 7th Fleet were so high that not enough emphasis was placed on sailors' preparation and training, said the new commander of the fleet on Friday (Oct 13).

This was Vice-Admiral Phil Sawyer's take on the preliminary findings of two collisions involving 7th Fleet ships this year.

Speaking to the media on the third day of a five-day visit to Singapore, Vice-Adm Sawyer said: "I think, over time, the balance shifted too much to the operational side, and not enough to making sure that our teams were rested, were trained, were able to go do the things we were asking them to do.

"If I had the entire US Navy out in Yokosuka, Japan, I still would not be able to do all the things that everybody would want me to do." biggrin.gif

Because of this, one of his tasks would be to "prioritise those and execute those things that we can execute", he said at the press conference at PSA Sembawang.

These remarks follow a 7th Fleet statement earlier this week that said the warship's commander and his deputy had been relieved of their duties - the commander on account of having exercised poor judgment, and his deputy because of poor leadership of the ship's training programme.

The vice-admiral replaced Vice-Adm Joseph Aucoin two months ago following a loss of confidence in his ability to command, after the US guided missile destroyer USS John S. McCain collided with a merchant ship near Singapore, killing 10 sailors.

The McCain's sister ship, the Fitzgerald, almost sank off the coast of Japan in June after colliding with a Philippine container ship, in an incident that killed seven sailors.

In his first interview since assuming command, Vice-Adm Sawyer cited the setting up of the new Naval Surface Group Western Pacific to train and certify forward-deployed surface ships operating out of Japan as one of the ways the US Navy is bringing this balance "back to normal".

He is in Singapore to thank the Singapore Armed Forces for their support following the collision of the John S. McCain, and to reaffirm Singapore's role as a strategic partner.

On his choice of Singapore as the place to give his first media interview in his new role, Vice-Adm Sawyer said that it shows there is "no doubt" that Singapore is one of the US Navy's strategic partners.

"We work very closely with the Singapore Navy... we value (the relationship) very highly, and we show that by continuing our work with Singapore on a daily basis."

The 7th Fleet said in a statement released in Japan on Wednesday that the collision of the USS John S. McCain with a merchant ship near Singapore was preventable. The commanding officer had exercised poor judgment, and the executive officer exhibited poor leadership of the ship's training programme, it said.

45 foreign fighters arrested in Malaysia this year

user posted image

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 45 foreign fighters have been arrested in Malaysia so far this year, said the country's Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun.
The majority are linked to Islamic State (IS), including three Iraqis who were commanders in the Iraqi IS cell. Indonesians, Filipinos and Yemenis were also part of this group of detainees.
Nine of those arrested are from the Abu Sayyaf Group, three from the Turkish Fetullah terrorist group and one from an Albanian terror cell with connections to IS, according to a police statement release on Friday (Oct 13).

Malaysia's Counter Terrorism Division received intelligence that the foreign fighters - who were previously operating in Syria and Iraq - were ordered to infiltrate countries around the world after IS lost ground in the Middle East.

“We also discovered coordination between IS and other terrorist groups, including the Abu Sayyaf in sending militants to Malaysia to launch attacks," Inspector-General Fuzi added.

"The FTF (foreign terrorist fighters) used the country as a hideout, to collect donations, or as a transit point before launching a terror attack in another country."

So far, 13 of the militants have been charged for offences under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012. Another 12 have been deported to their home countries to face legal action.

One has been detained under Malaysia's Prevention of Terrorism Act, while 12 suspects are still under investigation. The remaining seven suspects have been released.
