Kostrad investigates fatal field trip accident
http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2018/03...p-accident.html

Army Strategic Reserves Command (Kostrad) is investigating an accident involving an armored personnel carrier and dozens of pre-school children in Purworejo, Central Java, which killed one officer and the school’s principal.

“Kostrad are claiming the responsibility to investigate the accident and prevent it from happening again,” Lt. Col. Inf. Putra Widyawinaya, Kostrad spokesperson, said in a press release released on Sunday.

The Kostrad base in Purworejo received dozens of preschool children on Saturday as part of a field trip that allowed them to ride in armored personnel carriers.

One was traveling along the Bogowonto riverbank at around 10 a.m. when it went over an area of weak soil, causing the vehicle to tilt and roll over.

“Some of the passengers fell into the river and was carried away by the strong current,” Putra explained.

Pvt. Randi Suryadi and Ananda Preschool principal Iswandari drowned in the incident.

Randi had managed to save several children before he succumbed to exhaustion and was carried away by the current.

“Kostrad offers its condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the public,” Putra said.  (evi)

West Point honours Malaysian cadet’s crest design

PETALING JAYA: US Military Academy cadet Sayniish Pillay Muniandy from Taiping is doing more than his fair share of making Malaysia proud.

The 19-year-old’s design of an official crest for his graduating class (pic) has come out tops in a competition held at the West Point military academy in New York.

The design will adorn the rings of all his fellow graduates of West Point’s class of 2021.

Sayniish took four days to complete the design, saying it was “based on my imagination”.

US Military Academy cadet Sayniish Muniandys design was selected to be his graduating classs official crest.

He said his design included the US flag and an eagle, which had been part of the West Point class crests since 1803.

“I included my class motto ‘Until the Battle is Won’ in the middle because I felt that’s the most important component,” he said, adding that two sabres, a cadet’s and an officer’s, were also incorporated in his design.

Last June, Sayniish, who graduated from the National Defence University of Malaysia, was one of four Malaysian cadets selected to attend military academies in the US after a rigorous selection process, which takes into account factors such as classroom performance, physical fitness and commitment to service.

Only 23 Malaysian cadets have been accepted into US military academies over the past 20 years.

Sayniish said he would do his best to expand his military knowledge at West Point.

“I’m looking forward to cultivate and share whatever I have learned here in West Point with the Malaysian Army,” he said.

After he graduates, Sayniish said he wishes to serve as an infantryman in Malaysia’s 8th Rangers of the Royal Ranger Regiment or to join Malaysian Army Aviation.

He said he looked forward to rejoining his family, friends and savouring Malaysian cooking when he returns home for a break in December.

Lt-Col Sukhdev Purewal, who is Chief of the Office of Defence Cooperation at the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, said the fact that Sayniish had excelled in all areas of cadet life was no surprise.

“This is a terrific indicator of the ties our militaries will share throughout the future,” he added.

Indonesian Navy Rover-class tanker lists after failed replenishment operation

- An Indonesian Navy tanker has been taken out of service after a failed replenishment operation
- Incident likely to renew attention on the country’s naval replenishment capabilities

The Indonesian Navy’s (Tentara Nasional Indonesia – Angkatan Laut, or TNI-AL’s) sole Rover-class replenishment tanker, KRI Arun (903) is currently listing towards its starboard side after a failed replenishment-at-sea operation.

The incident took place off Ujung, Surabaya on 19 March at about 1830 h local time. According to a TNI-AL source who forwarded the image of Arun to Jane’s after the incident, the 140 m ship started to heel as it was replenishing the multipurpose hospital ship, KRI Dr Soeharso (990).

Arun was subsequently towed back to the Eastern Fleet’s (KOARMATIM’s) Semampir pier at Surabaya in its listed state by two TNI-AL coastal tugboats, TD Anjasmoro and TD Merbabu . No casualties have been reported.

The cause of the incident has not been ascertained, but Jane’s understands that initial indications point to a ballast pump failure on board Arun . The tanker will be temporarily taken out of service in lieu of damage assessments by TNI-AL personnel.

Arun was formerly in service with the UK Royal Fleet Auxiliary as RFA Green Rover with pennant number A268. The ship, which was launched in 1968, was transferred over to the TNI-AL in 1992 after a refit. The vessel can replenish ships at sea with fuel, fresh water, and limited dry cargo while under way.

Yemeni forces target Saudi F-15 fighter jet over Sa’ada: Video

Yemeni air defense forces, backed by fighters from allied Popular Committees, have reportedly intercepted and shot down an F-15 fighter jet belonging to the Royal Saudi Air Force.

An unnamed Yemeni military source told Arabic-language al-Masirah television network that the aircraft was targeted with a surface-to-air missile as it was flying in the skies over the northwestern Yemeni province of Sa’ada on Wednesday.

The jet had purportedly taken part in airstrikes against residential neighborhoods in the province.

Earlier in the day, Saudi fighter jets targeted a vehicle as it was travelling along a road in the Nihm district of Yemen’s west-central province of Sana'a.

Separately, a civilian sustained injuries when a cluster bomb went off in the Maran area of Ḥaydan district in Sa’ada Province.

Cluster munitions, which are banned by more than 100 countries, present an enormous danger to civilians.

Indonesians, including army personnel, caught by police for various offences

KUCHING: Three Indonesian men, including two believed to be Indonesian National Army (TNI) personnel, were detained by the police in the wee hours today at Ladang Raso in Lundu for allegedly possessing dangerous weapons, committing vehicle theft and immigration offences.

State CID chief SAC Dev Kumar said the suspects were apprehended at 3am during an operation dubbed Task Force Ops Lejang led by ASP Abdullah Hassan.

“During an ambush at a road at Ladang Raso, Lundu, the team saw a motorcycle coming from Lundu/Indonesia border.

“They managed to stop two Indonesian men who were wearing TNI pants. One of them carried a SS1 rifle with a magazine and 15 bullets. The motorcycle used by the suspects was reported missing at Sekama here last year.

‘”Further checking revealed that they are TNI personnel,” he said.

While investigating the two suspects on the scene, another two men came in a four-wheel drive (Mitsubishi Pajero) from the direction of Lundu heading to Indonesia border, said Dev.

“The vehicle stopped when they saw the police team and they immediately alighted from the car and fled from the scene.

“One of them was arrested when hiding in the bushes but another managed to escape.

“The Mitsubishi Pajero was reported missing at Sg Maong on March 22 while a motorcycle found inside the vehicle was reported missing in Kota Samarahan this year,” he disclosed.

All the suspects are being placed in custody at Lundu police station.

The case is being investigated under Penal Code, Arms Act 1960 and Immigration Act.

Car bomb explosion at Travis Air Force Base; ruled terrorism

A car crash attack at the main gate of Travis Air Force Base in northern California on Wednesday night is being treated as an act of terrorism, according to a new report.

An unauthorized vehicle crashed into a ditch at the main gate of the Air Force base after breaching the security gates. The vehicle, loaded with propane tanks, erupted into flames and killed the driver while military personnel were making their way to the vehicle, according to CBS.

Authorities said the driver ignited himself, which is why investigators are treating the incident as an act of terrorism, CBS reported.

The driver of the vehicle has been identified, but their name has yet to be released by law enforcement.

“The safety and welfare of our airmen, their families and our local community is our top priority,” Col. John Klein, 60th Air Mobility Wing commander, said in a statement. “I am extremely proud of how our first responders quickly addressed the situation to keep Travis and the surrounding area out of harm’s way. We are fortunate to have enduring relationships with federal and local law enforcement, and will continue to work hand-in-hand with them through the investigative process.”

Duterte offers free housing, aid to ASG bandits who surrendered

PATIKUL, Sulu — While taking a hard line on communist rebels, whom he wants legally declared terrorists and wiped out, President Duterte is welcoming with a soft heart internationally recognized and condemned terrorists who have surrendered to the authorities.

During a visit here on Monday, the President received 76 Abu Sayyaf bandits who surrendered separately to the military last year.
He offered them housing and other assistance to smoothen their reintegration into society.

“I came here because I am reading, hearing it, seeing it on TV, of the number that some of our brothers who have surrendered. This time en masse,” the President said.
The Abu Sayyaf started out as a jihadi group in the 1990s, but turned to banditry after its leaders were killed in clashes with the police and the military.

The terrorist group has become notorious for kidnappings for ransom, mostly of Westerners whom the bandits decapitate after they fail to receive money from the captives’ governments or relatives.

Same as help to NPA

The United States and the European Union have declared the Abu Sayyaf terrorists.

The President, however, said he wanted to take care of Abu Sayyaf bandits who had surrendered, just like he was taking care of New People’s Army (NPA) guerrillas who had given up to return to normal life.

He said he did not exactly know what the Sulu surrenderers wanted to do with their lives but in the meantime, he was offering them houses and livelihood, similar to the assistance that communist rebels in Mindanao who had surrendered were getting.

“For those interested, [the] government is ready. Houses. Sulu is big. I can build small houses here. I can accommodate you,” the President said.

He said he wanted a peaceful resolution of the Abu Sayyaf problem in particular and the Moro problem in general because seeing young people die pained him.

“I said in a conference that the life span of Joloanos, not here but those [fighting in the] hinterlands, averages about 40,” he said.

Not about religion

“It’s pitiful. I am also a Mindanaoan. I am also hurt. The guy doesn’t know [what he is fighting for]. He was not even schooled. Call him ignorant if you will, and they only know how to fish with limited resources and everything, and they are swayed by fervor, I don’t know,” the chief executive said.

He said that contrary to what jihadis had been claiming, the government’s campaign against lawlessness in Sulu was not about religion.

“There is no war of religion in this country. It is not an issue and has never been,” the President said.

He said he wanted peace in Sulu, as the people of the province had suffered long enough.
“The people had no respite from violence. There are a lot of opportunities. This is such a beautiful [place],” he said.

‘Stop the killings’

“So if somebody [in the Abu Sayyaf] is listening, stop it. Do not kill [people] because [they have] no money. Stop it. I am not angry [with] you,” he added.

Mr. Duterte also said he wanted to consult the Tausug about the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) pending in Congress.

The proposed BBL would establish a new, larger autonomous region for Muslims in Mindanao, conceived as part of a peace agreement signed by the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front — the biggest Muslim insurgent group in Mindanao — in 2014.

In an apparent response to an earlier Abu Sayyaf threat to kill him, the Presidewnt said: “I’ve been telling the communists, you want me killed? What can you do if I am killed? I’m more useful to you … alive.”
