blame kyoani then. But the reference is just a nod to the otaku subculture and konata that represent them.

QUOTE(Hangmen @ May 22 2007, 09:28 PM) A pity? More like her best asset. Like she said herself, "a flat chest is a status symbol! A rarity! Word for word". dude, you never replied mah PM! T.TSurvey related. ![]() Added on May 22, 2007, 10:10 pm QUOTE(Dias @ May 22 2007, 09:00 PM) If I want great references, Komugi's is better. Anyway, the Timotei reference is a hit or miss affair. Great for those who remember the ad but for those who didn't (or never seen it before), it will be like wtf? That is the risk from adding in too many references and end up alienating some of the viewers. Some references already had me going "Huh? never watched this anime before". Ah, but that's where you're wrong. The reference are there for you to find out for yourself. If it's blantantly obvious, the funneh would be lost. and that's why I love Lucky Star because it's not afraid to do that. Also remember, this IS A JAPANESE anime. thus any reference is for your averange Jap otaku, and I doubt you are one. Even like Hayate no Gotoku, some references are rather obscure to me since I am not familiar with the referred series (especially that one DBZ reference about having two more transformation which I was totally clueless about till I read ANN's HnG trivia page). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPN5aO5b-K4 Also it does make fun of it's own reference marathon. Remember that neither Kagamin, Tsukasa or Miyuki recognise the Timotei commercial that Konata did. So it does not matter if you don't know it because chances are, even the averange Jap living in japan does not remember anymore that Timotei commercial. QUOTE(Dias @ May 22 2007, 10:47 PM) I will have to disagree about the "find out for yourself" part. I believe LS to be quite explicit with their referencing but relies on the viewer being aware on which anime is being referred to. So it's an "either you have watched this anime or you haven't" thing. Even if it wasn't obvious, I doubt it will be funny for the uninformed (even when they find out since they aren't familiar with the reference material in the first place). Wrong! Lucky Star was never a series that uses referencing to attract fans. The original manga was made because Comptiq has pages to fill, and the mangaka had time to do the yon-koma manga. Comptiq never knew that it would be a hit, considering that the series was just about life. And IMO, that's what the anime is about too, life. The reference are just bonus. Thus if you want to watch the anime because of the reference that pops up, too bad, the anime is not for you. but if you want a series that is not serious, but revolves around life and how we react to it and to our surrounding, and the "donmai donmai" attitude, than this anime is for you. Not many can do this and pull it off so cleverly. IMO, only Yokohama Kadaishi Kikou and Yotsuba to! are better than this series. If the reference is visual, viewers are able to at least connect to the referred anime but if it is a verbal description (like the FMP Fumoffu description or something more subtle) then it is a problem. The (few) funny parts seem to come from scenes devoid of references and not through the references (except the Initial D scene). Yes, I am aware of it being targeted at the Japanese audience especially the otakus but I wonder if too much of referencing is a bad thing. In the end, I can only see LS as a mild humor anime pandering to the "Ooh...I know this anime and that anime. Let's see if I can identify every single reference in this episode" desires of the Japanese otaku and a hardore one at that (probably the one and only main target audience which the producers have in mind when they made this) with the funniness and hype being over-rated. |

well why don't you just don't care about the reference? it's not like YOU MUST look for each of the reference. IMO, the story is good enough even ignoring all the reference that KyoAni is doing. And remember, the yon-koma is too short so they must expand it. And have you even read Comptiq? it's an otaku magazine, as Konata has blantantly advertise in every episode.

Remember that in ep 8 Konata was happy that her postcard was published in Newtype? well my sources in Japan told me that in the recent newtype, the same one which is shown in the anime, there IS a postcard in there bearing the name "Konata Izumi, Saitama"
