My recent home Unifi installation came with an Alcatel fibre modem installed in my store room. During my home renovation, I have wired 2 cat5e connections to the the living hall downstairs and the family hall upstairs. Currently, I have a TP-Link router installed in the downstairs living hall, connected to the modem via the cat5e cable I put in during renovation to provide Wifi coverage to the whole house. Is it possible to connect another Wifi router in my upstairs family hall to the modem to provide better Wifi coverage upstairs?
Tips on how to accomplish this is much appreciated. Thank you.

QUOTE(soonwai @ Jan 4 2018, 11:44 AM) I'm afraid not. You can't connect an AP (eg: a wifi router configured as an AP) to the modem. Additional APs need to be connected to the router. If you move your TPLink router to the store room then you can use the 2 network points for additional APs, switches, etc... Are you using HyppTV? If you are then you'll need to allocate one cable to it. Thanks for the tip. I happen to have a spare router (left over from terminating my Sg internet contract). I take it that if I just plug it into the 2nd modem port without further configuration work, this will not work? Relocating the TP-Link router as an option sounds good. If no other better option, I may just give it a try and hope that the coverage downstairs is not impacted too greatly. Once again, thank you very much.

QUOTE(soonwai @ Jan 4 2018, 01:36 PM) That's right. You can't use LAN2 on the modem or LAN3 and LAN4 for that matter. Typically the only active port on the modem is LAN1 and the main wifi router must be connected here. Thanks very much for this clear reply. You came across as a networking expert. If I may just tap your brain for 1 more advice: how do I configure the router after connecting my CCTV DVR recorder to it to enable viewing from Internet devices, e,g, smart phone?

QUOTE(soonwai @ Jan 4 2018, 08:48 PM) I’m hardly the expert but thanks for thinking so. For CCTV, you’ll need: 1. Public ip: for your house’s network to be aceessible from the Internet. Unifi not a problem 2. Dynamic DNS: UniFi’s IP changes periodically. Dynamic dns keeps track of this. Most routers can do this. 3. Port forwarding of whatever necessary ports from the router to the DVR. That’s the most common way but exposes your DVR to the Internet. Another popular way is to setup a VPN server in your house then access the DVR using the VPN. Thanks for the lesson. Will try to understand and try it out when I next go in to JB.

QUOTE(chocobo7779 @ Jan 4 2018, 09:02 PM) Use No-IP. They have a free tier and all you need to do is to confirm their domain name each month (as easy as clicking the confirmation link in the email every month and solve a captcha) I'm using it for my file server and it works brilliantly Thanks very much, John & chocobo for the alert. Not sure if I understand enough about the DDNS. Will cross the bridge when time comes and seek to learn more from the experts in this forum who have selflessly helped novices like me.

QUOTE(soonwai @ Jan 4 2018, 11:42 PM) By any chance, is your spare router a DLink? What router? It can't be that bad. Even my old DIR-615 from VIP5 days can handle 100mbps, almost. https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...entry87190299Indeed, my spare router is a D-Link 850L. Anything to look out for?

QUOTE(soonwai @ Jan 5 2018, 10:54 PM) Perfect. You can register for a free dlinkddns.com account with your router's serial number. The account is hosted by dyn.com so will work with any router that supports dyn.com/dyndns.org ddns. Most routers do. Also, if you own any domains, a few registrars offer free ddns using a sub-domain. Routers usually do not support this (Mikrotiks do) so you update it with an app on a computer. Thanks very much for this useful tip.

Further to this topic, while I only have 1 cat5e cable running from my store room where the modem is located to my living room TV cabinet where I install my TP-Link router, would deploying a pair of Cat5 cable splitter to create a "pair" out of the single Cat5 cable worked? 1 out of the pair of split cable to be used to connect the modem in store room to the TP-Link router in TV cabinet; the remaining split cable is used to loop back to the store room and connect to the upstairs Cat5e cable installed in the store room. Workable?

QUOTE(soonwai @ Jan 12 2018, 02:18 AM) That will work but you'll be limited to 100mbps ethernet when you split the cable. Also there may be problems with crosstalk when all 8 pairs are active which they will be when you use the internet upstairs. My suggestion is to get a good router (no wifi, just router such as a Mikrotik RB750Gr3,) place it in the store room and connect both cables to it. Configure your existing TPLink as an AP. If you use HyppTV, you can even run both your Internet & HyppTV to the living room using one cable. Thank you sifu for sharing your knowledge. Much obliged.

QUOTE(AHGS14 @ Jan 12 2018, 09:00 AM) Thank you sifu for sharing your knowledge. Much obliged. Thanks to the consultation provided by sifus, especially Soonwai here, I am happy to report back that I managed to successfully position my DLink DIR-850L router upstairs and wirelessly connect it to my Unifi TP-Link router located in my living room TV cabinet. I did this by choosing the "wireless bridge extender" option as against the other 2 (Wireless router & wireless AP) options in the Dir-850L router. I did a speed test upstairs before and after activating the Dir-850L router. When connecting to the original TP-Link router downstairs, I would get about 8 mbps. This leaped up to 20 mbps when I switched to connect to the Dir-850L router. As a reference, my subscribed speed is 30 mbps and I get 28 mbps when seated downstairs connecting to the TP-Link router.

QUOTE(raemon @ Jan 25 2018, 05:51 PM) I have set up No-IP DDNS in my JB home. I have also implemented their Dynamic Update Client installed in a notebook PC that I carry with me. Q: When I return to Sg and login to my Sg home Internet, does the hostname I set up in JB get "updated" with my Sg IP or it maintains my original JB IP? Thank you.

QUOTE(go626201 @ Jan 25 2018, 09:39 PM) It will renew your hostname ip to your pc' current internet ip when you open your DUC in Singapore, unless you didn't start it in sg,then it will not update your ip. Maybe you can try to setup the ddns service in your jb's home router, some router got the function for setting the ddns in the router, and update your ip when it reconnect to internet. (If your router didn't have the function, i suggest you to change a better router, because that function can be easily find in many router.) Which router is using in your jb home? Thanks very much for this very helpful reply. I will try to set up the DUC in the TP-Link C1200 router instead, if the function is available. Much obliged.

QUOTE(SilentVampire @ Jan 26 2018, 11:54 AM) You don’t need to set up the DUC in the C1200 router. There is a section where you can input the dynamic dns in the router settings. Does it mean that I will just have to uninstall/deactivate the DUC in my notebook PC? Tx.

QUOTE(soonwai @ Jan 29 2018, 10:39 PM) Just checked mine which is working fine and WAN IP Binding is disabled. Found a temporary solution in TP-LINK Tech Support Forum, testing it and it works. "And there is a temp solution for this : When you use PPPoE dial-up, please change it to Dynamic IP, and then back to PPPoE dial-up." Thanks very much, Vampire & Soon Wai for your inputs

I did What is my IP on my mobile phone and notebook PC connected to my Unifi home network. The returned info were: - 147.158.21.70, and - 2001:e68:543b:16dc:b18f:cdea:56ba:b388
When I login to No-IP to check, the IP shown is that shown by my mobile phone. Any Sifu can shed light on this? 2 different IPs? Thanks

QUOTE(SilentVampire @ Jan 31 2018, 03:02 PM) First IP is your IPv4 address, second IP is your IPv6 address. See here: https://mashable.com/2011/02/03/ipv4-ipv6-g...e/#ukDX01GAPOq6Your No-IP address will be your IPv4 address, as your No-IP will use your IPv4 address by default, unless you set it to update your IPv6 address. Would I be view my home CCTV with the IPV6 address as well?

I hv subscribed to the Unifi 30M package. When I was subscribing to the package at RM139, I did not ask for a specific TV package. When I received my 1st bill, I note that it was the Jumbo Lite that I was billed for. From the info on their web site, the Sports Pack is also going at RM30. Would I be able to swap the Jumbo Lite with Sport Pack? Anyone has past experience to speak of? Tq.
