Wow what a reference. I am asking from the masses which is the best location. What’s wrong with that?
*
There aren't many choices for you out there if you are just looking at Peninsula . So just choose whichever one you feel like going to, based on whatever factors you decide it on - budget, convenience, distance, duty free, feeling lucky, etc.

There are all pretty much the same. Different divers have different preference, one could like macro diving perhentian, while another like the cheap booze in tioman, or another had seen whaleshark in tenggol, or another happen to encounter 40m visibility in lang tengah. Just some examples.

Only difference is East Coast is subjected to monsoon season.

QUOTE(drbone @ Apr 12 2019, 03:33 PM)
Thanks for this helpful info. I was amused by the feeling lucky part haha. Anyone care to share their experience in this area? Haha. Anyway, for me I would prefer somewhere with massage and a duty free area for the alcohol is a plus point. Which location fit ur criteria for u? I have been to Tioman a few times but I do not like the travelling to Mersing. Roads are unforgiving.
Well , I was not offended but its better for someone who does not want to answer to queries by shutting the heck up. That's how I deal with it! Might as well say nothing at all if there isn't anything to say. Newbies tend to make mistakes and ask silly questions. Haven't we all been at that stage before? So yeah Evan could have chosen to STFU. Haha.
Anyway thanks for your info also bro. Truly appreciated. Care to share which location fit ur criteria?
*
QUOTE(drbone @ Apr 12 2019, 04:31 PM)
Thanks bro! will keep that in mind. Massage and alcohol not sooo important but just a plus point. For me I want to be able to enjoy the clear waters as much as possible. That is the priority!
*
Firstly, if you are interested in diving, you should be doing some research of your own already. So asking such a question will actually do get you such an answer. If you ask stupid questions anywhere else on the T&L subforum, you do get stupid answers. Just try japan thread and see lol.

Clear waters? Better wish on all your wishing stars for the most luck. Otherwise just go to Maldives. If you diving is always 40m visibility, think again. In langkawi and lumut, you probably can’t even see your hand sometimes.

Booze, massage and diving. Best to go Thailand. If tioman isn’t to your liking because of the roads, then most of the other islands aren’t suitable either. Fly to Thailand then.

Anyone tried to diving in Redang around 3rd week of September?

Diving in Perhentian and Redang is about the same.

Redang is good to have the nice resort full-board experience.

Perhentian is generally at the lower end of things, budget lodging, loud party on Long Beach (hands up those of us who were last there together!). Dorm living, us boys using the outdoor tap for our shower.

So it all depends on what you looking for and your $$$.  I'd go Redang again just for the Laguna Redang buffet meals!
*
And the big dive boats, and dive crew who does everything for you. Hahaha.

Not sure if they still do RM200 for 4 boat dives now.

wah so cheap or not
*
The last I went in 2014 or 2015 it still remained at that price. It has been for a number of years ever since I got my diving license.
4 boat dives for RM200, 6 for RM300 and 8 for RM400 and so on so on. Excluding rental equipment.

Hence, for many years Laguna was my only choice even though the full board packages were slightly more expensive than the other hotels, the food was good (better last time), cheap dives, comfy rooms, and big boattt. Hardly can find many dive boats where you can giant strike, other than LOBs in Malaysia.

It's RM240 for 4 dives. I think it's still pretty reasonable.
*
Ooh! Good to know. Yes, still very reasonable I would say. Considering everything has gone up as well. thumbup.gif

Hi, ya I think is Kaleebso as stated by evan, now named Calepso, I have not joined them myself, but have seen people advertising in dive fb group time to time, if not mistaken around rm1.4k for 10 dives?
You probably have to check with your dive centre if they provide open heel fins to use with your booties.. If your planning to use your diving boots during dive, probably have to get a fins too, dive centre most often than not provide close footed fin for rent/classes only
*
Ooh. Not too bad RM1,400 for 10 dives, it includes food and all too I'm sure. It was around RM800 when I dived with Kaleebso almost 10 years ago. Amazing food but I felt it was too crowded for my liking. Still pretty good experience if you haven't tried LOB before. thumbup.gif

QUOTE(unitron @ Sep 13 2019, 11:20 AM)
yea... finally got my OWD

Easier than i thought, but of course buoyancy control still not great
*
Buoyancy comes with practice biggrin.gif
Unless you are a fish/sotong. But you'll get better with more dives. Don't worry about that. Relax, long slow breathes, and ideally not too much weights.

Once you figured out how many weights you need, you'll be more comfortable with your buoyancy. I feel OW courses generally give students more weights than what they may need.

QUOTE(cmah89 @ Sep 16 2019, 03:44 PM)
Good thing is, leave city at 3am takes about 2.5 hours to reach Terminal/Port then have option for Puerto Galera or Anilao Dive.

Ferry to Anilao 1 hour + jeepney to Sabang Dive 30mins.
If Anilao, jeepney about 40mins then Tricycle 10 mins.

Just nice for Morning Dive boat 9AM

Was considering Koh Lipe since can fly to Langkawi and then take a boat there, but prices (per dive) seem high vs Malaysia prices.  hmm.gif
Or maybe it's normal and i'm just not used to it.
*
As you progress in your diving hobby, just keep in mind that Malaysia is one of the cheapest place to dive, especially around the East Coast. So it's really hard to compare with oversea prices.

QUOTE(Felice821 @ Oct 16 2019, 04:21 PM)
Need some opinion from all the pro divers here. Currently when I went for diving, I will just wear top (Sharkskin Chillproof wetsuit). And I planned to get the dive pants now.

So, should I go with dive pants, so will be 2 pieces (top and bottom) ... or just get 1 piece wetsuit better?
*
I personally prefer one-piece wetsuit as I find a separate top too difficult to remove after a dive. I use a sharkskin full suit with fleece inside and it's good enough for tropical waters. But if you are used to wearing you Sharkskin top and have no issues with it, then just save cost and just get the bottom.

QUOTE(wKkaY @ Oct 16 2019, 06:07 PM)
You're not going to know the weather so far in advance anyway. Check a day or two before and if the sea forecast is crazy like 3++mt waves you better stay at home and watch Blue Planet laugh.gif

Or he can be like us and book the next flight back from Miri hahaha. tongue.gif

Mexico as it turns out is cheaper... But only after you spend thousands upon thousands on gear, training, and flights laugh.gif
*
That's half way across the globe lol. Adding in flights will make it triple (or more?) the price of a dive here hahaha.

QUOTE(Felice821 @ Oct 22 2019, 04:25 PM)
For Malaysia water probably more towards to protection. Is good to prepare to some cold (25 - 25 degrees kind of water).
Maybe as of now I just get the bottom. And if I frequent dive, then only think about full wetsuit.
*
Oh when you dive frequently, you would probably have a few sets of wetsuits anyways. Hahaha.

Hi sifus

Is September a good time to travel to dive? I'm planning to do my open water padi license and my friend frm china also want to do some diving.. He got advanced licensed d..
Where is recommended to go for September ah? For peninsular Malaysia....
*
September is fine. Any islands along the East Coast should still be open. Weather can sometimes be really good, some days a little bad, but shouldn't be too bad compared to Oct/Nov.

Any one knows of a good dive centre in Raja Ampat? Planning a trip there soon, thanks in advance!

Look for some dive groups that organise trips overseas. Depending on their customer base, they may have trips to R4 that may suit your travel dates/budget.

If not, then I guess google will be your best friend. Most people who dive in R4 go for LOBs cause that's the easiest to move around dive sites. You could also wait till MIDE in June to see if there'll be any booths promoting R4.

I did land based and was staying at Waiwo Dive Resort, but the only reason was because my friend was organising it, price was right for me and hence the opportunity to tag along. Dive sites were far away and the boats were not that fast, so it took at least 2 hours to get to most dive sites on a small speed boat. But this was also almost 10 years ago, so things may have changed now. Would definitely go for LOB experience next trip.

R4 is a must dive for every diver, have fun!
