Help, my vios 2014, spec G, have this annoying rattling noise coming from the steering wheel.

I Dismantled the Airbag/horn unit, the side buttons with it's plastic housing, and when i tap even the slightest, there's this metal rattling sound. Kind of like a loose nut/ washer .

I sent to Toyota Service Center, they first say it was the airbag/horn unit, which if replace, need a whooping 5K.

So i opted to keep using. but lately it got worse.

After i seperate the Airbag/horn and keep away from the steering, i tap, the sound still there. but from i touch and look around the steering, there's no visible loose parts.

The noise appear when the car in motion, or hit the uneven roads, smooth roads, or in between up and down speeds/climbing speeds...

Anyone know which part is the culprit?

Thanks

and sorry for the long text.

you have to remove the cover (big circle) located below your steering wheel (small circle) to find the power steering computer assy. The noise is from there.

I dismantle that part before... do you have whatsapp?

try to hold that part firmly and knock around steering wheel and column to check whether the noise is from that box or not.
may be yur case is different but i can confirm it is not from airbag cover
*
Just dismantle that box , the noise is not from it.

should be the steering column itself already..i didnt dismantle the ecu but hold firmly and knock around, noise is at minimal
*
You mean the shaft like thingy? I don't know how to dismantle that....

The Metal box is only a piece of PCB with few capacitors . The noise it makes doesn't sound like the rattling.

Turning the wheel didn't make any sound. Only when tap the steering wheel, or when climbing speeds. It somestimes didn't even produce it when going through rough roads.
The most annoying thing is, it occasionally make that. sometimes do, sometimes don't.

I found an image of the colummn thingy part.... even more confuse.

Where should i take for inspect ? Accessory shop or car repair shop?
Going through Toyota service center going to cost a bomb and time as well.. Would like to avoid that if possible.

welcome to the dashboard rattling sound club. i had mine sent 3 times still not settled. fed up, i bought a dashboard rubber insulator. the noise gone. but as you drive further, new sound will emerge. now i got sound coming from middle ac ventilation. waiting for my next service to fix this.

Hi.... i have the same issue, when i Rev my car, or go on ueven roads, there's a metal-like rattling noise. Tapping on the steering wheel produce the sound, right?

If yes, You try open up the plastic cover covering the meter. I open up mine, and just touching here and there, touch behind the meter panel and all wires you can touch. I did that, and the noise is gone now.

For the AC Ventilation, it's the air cond vent plastic clip where you hold it to slide the fins right/left / or up/down. Dismantle the clip from inside , with a screw driver (philip) and you will see two holes. Poke and twist to open up the clip, add some tiny bits of sponge in there , not too thick or thin, just right, and attach the clip back up snugly.

Can you describe the sound if it's not what i mentioned?

Hi Brother,

Which Meter cover? Possible to capture Photo? I have the same rattling noise, send to SC 2 times but problem not solve.

Thanks
*
i sent mine to Service Center for 2 times too. One is unable to fix it, the other one is special appointment for sound locating and possible fixs. The techinician drive my car around bumpy and coarse road to try to produce the noise, and by revving the engine up and down to ' shake' the car too. He heard the noise, and when back at the SC , they open up the part where the horn and AirBag is and said the noise originated from there ( but it's not ), but tapping on the steering wheel with the Horn/AirBag, the noise is like some loose metal washer rattles. They said need another appoitment which is completely waste of time. So i took matter to my own hands and open up and finally the noise is from behind the meter panel (must remove the meter cover in red arrow ) and but rustling my finger here and there, the noise is gone for GOOD. Since then, there's no noise until today for months already.

- There's various rattling noise in my VIOS 2014 too, here i list it.
1. Behind meter panel , Soultion : Open the cover and rustle it as hard as i can : Fixed
2. Black plastic cover ( behind the cup holder ) , Splution : Open up the push/start cover and the black cover and add some Daiso Wheather soft sponge strips : Fixed
3. Door panel ( driver side ) Add some old cloth but open up the door handle : fixed
4. AC vents ( driver side and center panel ) , open up the slider clipes and add some thin sponge : Fixed

That's the noise i found in my vios and the solutions i found. But i cannot guarantee that it works for everyone. But i also hope it works for you, yes, those rattling noise it's darn annoying while driving. blush.gif

Hi,

For those who own vios G Spec and above, would like to ask about the leather seat as below:

1) After long hot sunny day, will the seat get very hot until not comfortable to sit on it? How about on cold/rainy days?

2) Will the seat get crack easily? If yes, roughly after how many years?

3) Need constant care for the leather seat? For example apply some chemical or something? Or just need to wipe with damp cloth from time to time?

Still undecided whether want to go for G or E.
Never own a leather seat car before.
*
I own G Spec Vios year 2014. The Beige/Black variant. To answer your questions as above :

1) After long hot Sunny day , the seat won't get that hot, but it's best not to give it as much as sunlight ( The leather can dry and crack )
. You just need to open door and cool it down for few minutes and can sit on it.
Rainy/Cold days is the best one, the seat is cold , very comfortable to sit on.

2) I have used it for 4 years and still in 9/10 condition. The only real leather is the perforated leather. The side , the headrest, the backs, sides, all is PU. You have to be very cautious of sharp objects and coarse surfaces. Things like paper is a big no no . Paper can be very sharp since it can cut fingers if not careful, so refrain from placing documents or any papers.

3) You just need to use leather conditioner found in supermarkets once in a while, it has the chemical to keep the leather moisture and also clean smudges from daily uses. If it's not too dirty, use microfiber cloth ( safer on leathers ) from time to time, the water can also helps keep the real leather moisture.

Leather seats is comfortable to sit , easy to clean, less dusty.

Fabric seats generally is more durable ( no worries of cracks ), can be slight dusty, a bit hard to clean if spilled with stains like beverages and food sauces. but if taken care regularly by vacuum and wipe with damp cloth, they can be very easy to care.

Check atf level. Else could be transmission mounting.

just checked the Auto Transmission fluid, level and clearness ... it's still 100% and Clear red...

If it's Transmission mounting... is this going to cost a lot to repair?

to check mounting, look at the transmission housing underneath the car. at the same time, get someone to shift from p to r. see the housing movement. if it moves quite hard and strong shake, probably need to change the mounting. see if you can spot the sound you mentioned.

if you are nearing the service schedule, why not as toyota sc about your problem.

Warranty expired last year... the kong sound and slightly difficulties shifting from P > R is only happens sometimes.

QUOTE(khaiyee87 @ Jun 7 2018, 12:37 PM)
from your description it only happen shifting from P > R, few situation can happen for this as the following:-
1)are you shift your gear to P and release brake immediately without pull the handbrake when parking?
2)if yes 1),is slope at your parking location?
3)if both 1) and 2) yes, then i can conclude that it is the gearbox safety design when you swift to P, the engine is 'disconnected' from the driveline and a parking pawl is engaged to prevent the drive wheels from turning, if you not engage handbrake immediate after shift to P position, your car will rolls forward or backward slightly, hence the parking pawl will engaged tightly. that is the reason when you trying to shift from P > R will have "kong" sound.

try the following step is the sound still persist when shrft from P>R
1) stop your car, shift to P, pull the handbrake, release brake pedal OR.
2) stop your car, shirt to N, release brake padal and pull handbrake immediately, then shift to P.

if above steps done but still have 'kong' sound when you shift your gear, then it is better to send in SC to have detail checkup for the said problem.

try and feedback if any  icon_rolleyes.gif

I usually start drving like this :
i enter the car,
press foot on brake,
start engine, with my foot still on brake pedal,
i shift from P to R and then release handbrake,
then release my foot brake so the car can reverse out of my house.
or
I press brake pedal , release handbrake, shift from P > D and then release brake pedal and drive.

My house can say pretty flat with about 2% slop ( for the water to run dry and prevent water puddle ).
I have been doing this every time i shift from P > R > N > D to drive forward or P > R ( to reverse out a parking spot ) . Sometimes it makes kong sound, sometimes no.

How do i brighten up my vios 2014 gen headlights? At night , it's a bit dim, compared to my Innova 2.0E, which is damm bright?

Aside from white LEDs, what other ways i could do? I have the original toyota basic tinted installed by Toyota and not outside sources.

Thanks

Personally think the design (both exterior and interior) is turning customers away, not to mention the underpowered engine
I was interested in one myself but decided against it after considering for few months, since I will be driving the car for about 10 years, better to get something I really enjoy driving for its price
But again, it's personal preference, I do see a few forummers here who bought one and seem to be enjoying their ride wink.gif
*
ya, i still prefer 2014 ones, mine's G Spec year 2014... the exterior and interior is far sportier and apporiate to body width ( especially the headlight and tailight ).... The only thing i like of the latest gen is the rear door now has cup/bottle holder and second roof lightning at the center, sportier rims, and that's it.. i hate all other parts, most notably the fake black patch ( in gloss black paint ) at the front bumper.
